    GoPro batteries are notoriously bad and even worse in cold temperatures. Previous GoPro versions have died in minutes when trying to operate in sub zero temperatures. In this video I take the GoPro Hero 8 ski touring in the cold and test how long each battery lasts for. Unfortunately the GoPro Hero 8 doesn't have a compatible battery backpack. This is something we used extensively, especially in cold temperatures.

    Found the same problem on my hero 8 black. Worked fine in summer. Then tested in -27 here in Norway and it died immediately after 2-3 clips. Well not surprising, that was really cold. But then tested today, fully charged, turning on and off in -8 and went from 100% to 3% in less than an hour. Totally not acceptable for a winter sports camera. My gopro hero4 black did better. Just missing the stabilization and battery life, otherwise I would choose that in a heartbeat. Extremely disappointing! A total fail! How can an action camera for winter sports die in the cold? I hope it's just a bad battery, otherwise can't see how this is viable as a winter sports action cam. May have to buy a DJI osmo at this rate, or one of the Chinese action cameras. -8 isn't even that cold for winter sports! Really bummed out here for an expensive fail of a purchase. Maybe I will try and find a battery backpack for the hero 4 black. But sucks losing the steadycam thing.

    Battery life has been a real pain for me as well using it during the winter months. I keep my camera and batteries in my pants pockets until I need them but even doing that might yield me five minutes of recording once it's exposed to sub-zero temps. One workaround I have come up with, as long as you don't need to keep the camera completely sealed, is to remove the door on the charging/hdmi port and run a cable to an external portable power source you can keep in your pack or jacket. This works fine if you are helmet or chest mounted, but not so much if you have your camera on a ski pole or something.
    Ultimately, I'm a bit disappointed but not surprised since GoPro doesn't advertise their operating temperatures. I guess they know they would lose winter users if people knew how terrible battery life is. That said, they're still great devices and when it's not cold, they work very well.

    I was using my Hero 8 in -18 degs weather, and the camera went dead after my first 10 second video clip. And it would not power up after that.
    When I got home and the camera warmed up, the battery was showing 77% power.
    My only comment is that its the nature of the beast.
    I've owned several different brands of small action cams, and they all do this.
    Small batteries freeze in cold temperatures, its just physics, or thermodynamics.
    If you plan on shooting video in the winter, keep the camera close to your skin when not in use.
    Keep it as warm as possible.

      Complete uninformed baloney. Do a little research on helmets and skiing and you find there is no evidence of helmets lowering the incidence of concussion while skiing. There IS evidence of helmeted skiers having MORE abrasion and small cut type injuries. The researchers postulated that this may be due to helmeted skiers feeling invincible and taking more risk.

    I´m also having issues with my Hero 8 Black while snowboarding. I have 9 batteries, all of them do the same, if the weather is -2 to -10 ºC it will record for a few minutes and will turn off and won´t turn on unless I change the battery to a fully charged one. When I charge the battery that ran off it´s around 70% sometimes. Really annoying, I´m going to try tomorrow with a protective housing.

    Thanks for this video, it has reinforced my decision to hold off replacing my lost Hero2. I was on a snowcat trip near Revelstoke with the Hero 2 about 2 years ago and my Hero2 died in the cold and I missed potentially the best footage of that trip due due my dead Gopro

    I hardly had any issues with hero 7 in cold temps, but hero 8 dies in minutes. Now gopro even made a new battery for hero 9-10 to combat against extreme temps...that was a cold slap in the face for the fans of gopro. I think I really need to change to another brand that can take the low temps of Finland. Past week we had -20c and all my other gear like dji mini 2 and my huawei p30 phone worked fine. While gopro died in 5 minutes after I took it from my warm pocket. I never had keep my hero 7 on a pocket, it was always on my helmet all day in the cold.

    Hey man nice video! I have not taken it to extreme cold temperatures just yet but I'm pretty shocked to see that at 4k 30fps it will only last for approximately 52 minutes. I will test this out while having it connected to my gimbal which charges it while recording (although the battery drains faster than it charges) to see how much longer it will last. Finally, I will have to test with a wireless charger connected to the go pro to see if this makes any difference.
    The door for the battery and micro sd cable will have to be off while I use the gopro. I do not like how it's not accessible without removing this door.

      Just a side note, batteries do not drain faster in cold temperatures, in fact, its just the opposite.
      What is actually happening is that when your battery freezes, it does not produce enough current to run the camera. The camera in turn detects a low current and shuts down because it assumes the battery has run out.
      In reality, your battery is still fully charged, but unable to produce current cause its frozen.
      If you take your camera home, and let it warm up, you'll find that it will show that it is almost fully charged again.
      So its not draining quicker, its not draining at all.

  • @GavinRemme

    I wonder if keeping the camera busy with hindsight or something on would keep the camera just warm enough from it’s own processor heat to last a bit longer. But maybe the battery that used would cancel out any real benefits. My hero 10 does generate a little heat when it’s really put to work!

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  2 года назад

      It's a good thought. GoPro batteries don't last too long in the best environments so I suspect the life you gain will be offset. But might be worth a shot in very cold environments.

  • @SkonrokkenTV

    I really dig the hypersmooth, so don't really want to go back to hero4. Guess next experiment is to leave it on in the hope that will keep it warm. Have 2 xtra batteries in a baggy with chemical hand warmers on me, but replacing them all the time is a bit of a bad kludge for an action camera. Never had to do that with hero4. Battery life sucked, but it kept on trucking despite the cold. Good to see my suspicions confirmed, and very disappointed. Will be ebaying a gopro 4 battery backpack anyway at this rate. One of the big ones, and then back to stabilization in post. Blecch! -8 is nothing for a wintersports action camera! Again, total fail by gopro.

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  3 года назад

      Ahhh ya so disappointing. One trick I have used is buying the feet warmer packs because they have a sticky side you can stick to the gopro. It's not a perfect solution but does something. The wind when you're moving cools it down as well. I'm also looking on amazon for 3rd party battery packs for the 8. I'm sure they will make them. Just a matter of when.

    What settings did you use while recording in cold temperature? I tried using 4k 60fps in cold weather and both times I got the "Low battery, switching off" message after which I am unable to even turn the camera on. (plugging it to a charger allows you to turn it on again). Maybe I need to record in 2.7k or lower in the cold?

    • @Movesmedia

      I've tried a bunch of different settings. Non of them seem to make a difference. It's the cold that zaps the battery and Camera settings don't really help to prevent this unfortunately.

    Hey there, I live in Russia, I usually take my Go Pro Hero 8 to ice fishing in winter, when I just keep it in a bag (regular - not thermo) and put it on the ice somewhere and then just take it out and start shooting it starts freezing instantly and video stops after less than a minute, however when I keep it in the inner pocket of my jacket, and take out from there I can shoot for about 10 minutes before it freezes, the temperature I’m talking about is usually -6,7, sometimes more, is that normal or something is wrong with it? By the way I bought a used Go Pro 8, not the new one, but it’s in a good condition

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  2 года назад

      Ya thats normal. The gopro batteries are pretty bad in the cold. You need to try and keep them warm as best as possible. You can try sticking hot packs onto the camera or cycle through a few warm batteries you keep in your jacket. The other option is to plug it in to an external battery pack while using it in the cold. Hope that helps!

    I have to completely disagree with your descriptions first sentence/statement "GoPro batteries are notoriously bad and even worse in cold temperatures" Yes, GoPro cameras have never had long battery life. They are small batteries in a 4k camera. My statement would be GoPro batteries are small, and cold weather has a significant effect on performance. Yes, you don't always have to use 4k, but they have a processor that demands a lot from the battery. As for the cold weather, all batteries struggle in cold weather. Especially if they are not in use and get cold themselves. Yes, they do need to offer a battery Back-Pack again. I think with Hero8, they focussed on the blogger hence "Media Mod." Sorry for the long comment great video though, thanks for sharing.

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  4 года назад

      All fair comment Xoomi. I'd take a bigger batter/ camera for longer battery life. The GoPro Max actually has longer battery life because it's bigger. Regardless, I'd love to see a battery ad on and would like the Media Mod to have some kind of battery addition.

Many of us in Alaska that are operating in extreme environments use Lithium batteries in headlamps and GPS units down to -40F. Li Ion is long dead at those temps.
