Great vid !! What people seem to be unaware of tho is the "in MY room" part ....what the sub 'puts out' is all dependent on room size and, not in this case, amp POWAH ....
after watching your monolith vs svs sub comparison video I can see now that the monolith does provide subsonic protection in its THX setting. the big difference is that svs looks to be using a simple second order high pass filter centered at about 18 Hz (about 6 dB per octave reduction) and monolith provides a more complex ledge and smoothing centered at about 25 Hz. i prefer the roll off point and method of the svs, but kudos to monolith for keeping response flat after approaching its excursion limits. this is one benefit of a true sealed sub in that by selection and careful signal processing you can throw gobs of power at them and hit those ultra low frequencies but keep the excursion in check, whereas a ported sub can get itself into all kinds of problems at the ultra low frequencies (especially DIY) if the designer hasn't paid attention to its cone excursion, impedance, and port air velocity.
I have the M-215 for about three weeks now. It doesn't slam as much as I thought it would. Maybe I can upset my neighbors at 2am but I doubt I could piss them off at 2pm, at least not with the M-215. It really doesn't kill like people are saying. I think the reviewers are getting paid to say that M-215 is tearing the house down. I thought I would have to worry about my house falling apart. I am in decent shape and can move the speaker around myself. It is way too big depth wise, there is no reason for the cabinet to be 28" deep because there just isn't. 14" deep would have been great. The speakers move in and out and the wind is moving in and out of the port. It just doesn't slam into my body or chest. I've watched videos that says 10" & 12" subwoofers punch you in the chest for gun fire scenes and 15" subs are for big explosions. It's just too massive for the effect you get. The cabinet is large enough for 6 15" drivers. It takes up a lot of space. Output is questionable even when the speakers are jumping. Definitely not worth $2499, $1499? Maybe, but it will take up a lot of space and give you a questionable amount of output. One might be better off with the THX 16" Ultra. If you want to go cheap, Monoprice has a $300 15" subwoofer that's 65 pounds and 800 watts. Two of those for $600 will give this refrigerator a run for its money, they just don't do Infrasonics...but they do SLAM!!!
Awesome video youthman. I love REW also. Can you add in your video though if you took the measurements at reference level? Or volume so forth? You may have said what volume but i may have missed it. Did you calibrate as well to 75db? Thanks man for all these videoos. You and audioholics are awesome!
It's impressive how little of a dip there is in that 45Hz area that usually causes you so many problems. Also looking at the graphs between this and the dual PB16s there's a SUBSTANTIAL increase above 40Hz as well, making for a remarkably flat room response by comparison. You may sacrifice 4-5db below 30Hz, but gaining 10-15db above 40Hz is a pretty compelling argument, especially when you consider this is a single cabinet!
Lately, I have been measuring subs on my riser just to the left of my front row seat as that is the best response in my room on the floor. I intend on bringing one of the PB16 down from behind my screen and taking measurements on the same day, from the same location, at same volume between both the Monolith M-215 and SVS PB16. That’s the only way to compare two subs as measurements from previous videos could be from a different location and certainly different volumes.
@@Youthman Good to know. If I lived closer I'd happily donate my back to help you schlep these things around to give you more of an apples to apples comparison!
@@Youthman Have you tried keeping your subs at fixed locations but turning them to different angles and measure the frequency response? I tried this and got varying results.

Does this mean that ported (no foam) and extended mode is the best way to use this subwoofer since it will output a higher level of sound? Or why would someone want to use THX with or without the foam insert if they are not getting as loud of a level from the sub below 30Hz.
Youthman sealed should be tighter/quicker bass as the driver now uses the air as a compression spring, down side is you lose SPL, but if you have so much SPL who cares. THX mode to roll off at 30hz is a commercial theatres spec where they are going for tight slam instead of depth
@@Youthman It's interesting. Subs like those from Ascend Acoustics have a switch for music or movies and it's on both their ported and sealed subs. It's crazy for the avg. Joe to figure it all out.

In your videos, you say two or more subs is best for the theater room. So what I’m trying to ask is. Is two 15’s in one box considered one sub or two subs. Is it better to have two 15’s in one box or two 15’s in two separate boxes?
Two in a single box is technically considered one subwoofer. The main reason of having multiple subwoofers around your room is they can be used to smooth out the bass response throughout your room
Having to 15' in the same box and Doble power amp, it's a question of having more Spl. It's better to have two singles 15' than one doble 15'. Best option two have two double 15's.😅
Hey @youthman. Tell us what you think about Monolith 215. Also, if THX output lower decibels, then can you tell me what is the use of THX. Obviously, if you buy a speaker has 2 15s you want deep bass at loud volume. So my thoughts it is a certain sound quality they are looking for. So if you could let us know what is the real benefit of THX. thanks.
It has to do with the THX certification. There's a specific type of response that THX looks for when evaluating equipment, so unless it meets that, they don't get the stamp of approval. So just because it gets louder at lower frequencies, doesn't mean it still meets THX's standards at those volumes. This is Monoprice's way of still playing within the rules to get the shiny badge, but also letting the end-user decide whether they want to abide by THX's standards, or use their own ears. Best of both worlds, really.
its so its can play louder, extended mode make the subwoofer hit its excursion limit earlier. thx is about loudness and dual 15 cant keep up to the standard.
I would always include the "close miking" graph for the kinda "reference" because you might forget to tell always that it's the performance in your room in a specific location ;) Thanks!
Thanks. I’m pretty consistent with stating “in my room”. The best solution is ground plane measurements but that isn’t practical when I’m reviewing 215lb subwoofers. My videos have always been from a consumer’s perspective.
But how does it sound? Does it tighten up when you seal up the port? I mean, spl is important and all, sound quality should be paramount. You missed the most important part of the comparison the part you put in a SACD or your favorite record and comment on the actual sound coming out of it. Most people that can afford one of these, can also afford two. Spl is, or at least should be, secondary. (the word 'comparison' here was edited from the word review because someone didn't get the gist of this post and needed it explained to them)

@@dextermorgan1 Ok, since we are being pedantic, I will go and edit my post. I will change _review_ to _comparison_ just to make you happy. Definitely need to play with REW more, this way you can show what the advantages and disadvantages of running this sub (or any sub) in each of it's configurations. Then you can show waterfalls, distortion and decay (yes though the room matters). Otherwise people will watch and think...Ok so just run it extended ported...
Great video as always. You are right to focus on the most important area, probably best for the video. However, LFE goes to 120, crossovers are not a hard line and many satellite speakers are crossed at 120ish. Subs will have significant output over 80hrz
You are correct. I have my LFE set to 120Hz. I didn’t think about that when I made the statement that I wasn’t as concerned with above 80Hz. Guess I should be 😂
@@Youthman my understanding is that LFE channel mix includes frequency up to 120, aside from your speaker crossovers. At ref level you technically could have 103 db sub output even at 240 hrz (assuming 12db crossover slope) at least my understanding. Still i think it is right to focus graph on most important below 80
That THX mode is weird. I bet they tone it down for a technical reason. Perhaps, THX requires a certain level of linearity in performance, so if a speaker exceeds spec, then it has to be EQ'd down. 105 DB at 15 hz. Lol! Thump!
youthman you think 3 decibels isn't very much difference but that is not correct 3 decibels is a large difference and 4 decibels has 37 percent loudness difference so 37 percent is a very large loudness difference
Can somebody tell my, if there are frequencies below 20 Hz in current recordings at all? I am curious, if they are using high-pass filters at 20 Hz in mixing?
This is all waay to technical for me . I’m a How does it make me feel subjectively kind of guy and was hoping for a preview of how the speaker/s sound. But then i realized that’s a ridiculous request because i’m viewing this video on an ipad with speakers the size of a pepper corn. 😳
If I was able to spend 2000 on a sub, I feel like this would be the one. For some reason, I just really like the look of this, over the jtr and the pb16. Not sure why.
Performance aside, for some reason I just like the look of this one. I know the JTR subs are on another level, but the output that this sub has is pretty special too.
And yet most will automatically chose the THX mode and in this case (and others) it performs worse. Monolith should have save the money, not paid for THC certification and knocked $100 off the price
Well, except these measurements are for a single location of one given room, and therefore meaningless. Well, meaningless other than for the one thing that the Youthman was trying to show us, and that was simply the different frequency responses one will get by way of those two variables (Ported/Seal & Extended/THX). The results look very predictive, and so hats off to Monoprice for their implementation of these two variables / four tuning options. ...and of course a BIG Thank you to the Youthman!!!
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but big deal you illustrated 4 graphs of frequency. what you should be telling us is whats the difference between Extended vs THX, and what technology is behind EXTENDED mode.
@@Youthman "Setting the EQ switch to the THX positionto have the subwoofer perform within the THX certified parameters. When set to the EXTENDED position, the subwoofer will use your amplifier's equalizer, with the result that the output level will be slightly louder, but with more distortion. " So my question & statement would be along the line of, being that EXTENDED MODE played louder than THX in your graphs, it would be great to run live audio tests with movie clips and see which sounded more dynamic and does the DISTORTION become audible to annoy the listener. And if EXTENDED MODE comes out on top, while pay for THX certification. I know your channel can get to the bottom of this.

@@Youthman I can have that... haha.
Definitely need to play with REW more, this way you can show what the advantages and disadvantages of running this sub (or any sub) in each of it's configurations. Then you can show waterfalls, distortion and decay (yes though the room matters). Otherwise people will watch and think...Ok so just run it extended ported...
There is a LOT I don’t know in REW. Still have a ton to learn. Super basic with it right now.
Still i think it is right to focus graph on most important below 80
thanks good job 👏🏻
If I had a dollar for every time I ran REW, I’d be able to pay cash for 2 of these!!! Lol
😱☝️🔈🔉🔊 MINI YOUTHIE! LOL
You should try the pod race scene from phantom menace I bet those engines sound great with this sub!
Hey Yootman, do you ever use any dubstep for testing subs ?? Skrillex, Excision etc..??
My son used to be big into Dubstep. I enjoyed it but haven’t listened to it in a few years.
@@Youthman it's a real clean pure digital mix that gets real low.... Even if you don't like the music it's great for testing 🙉
Can somebody tell my, if there are frequencies below 20 Hz in current recordings at all? I am curious, if they are using high-pass filters at 20 Hz in mixing?
@Regular Guy Audio 👍
I want to see this against a 16 Ultra
You will.
This is all waay to technical for me .
I’m a How does it make me feel subjectively kind of guy and was hoping for a preview of how the speaker/s
sound.
But then i realized that’s a ridiculous request because i’m viewing this video on an ipad with speakers the size of a pepper corn. 😳
A mean looking sub
Massive
Between monolith and svs pb 4000 witch 1 would u say hitts the hardest
Simontshukudu Tshukudu I have not heard the PB4000 but physics would say the Monolith
If I was able to spend 2000 on a sub, I feel like this would be the one. For some reason, I just really like the look of this, over the jtr and the pb16. Not sure why.
It’s a great value for sure. Neither it or the PB16 are of the caliber of the JTR subs. My JTR Captivator RS2’s are flat down to 8Hz.
Performance aside, for some reason I just like the look of this one. I know the JTR subs are on another level, but the output that this sub has is pretty special too.
Output on the Monolith is fantastic.
And yet most will automatically chose the THX mode and in this case (and others) it performs worse. Monolith should have save the money, not paid for THC certification and knocked $100 off the price
Shame monoprice doesn’t sell in europe
Maybe one day they will
Hot dog! Ill take 2!
Looks like Chinese math to me🤦🏽♂️👊🏽
Could be
THX with a little bit of EQ seems to be optimal!
Monsterlith
LOL
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but big deal you illustrated 4 graphs of frequency. what you should be telling us is whats the difference between Extended vs THX, and what technology is behind EXTENDED mode.
Care to enlighten us? I’m always willing to learn.
Svs 😷💩🤮👎👎👎not THX certified....monolith 🙏👌

Grow up you dumb moron!
Better than THX
