Struggling to Sketch the Graph of a Polynomial Function? Try This! (Degree 4 Example)

- In this video I will walk you through how to accurately sketch the graph of ANY polynomial function by using a degree 4 example of a polynomial in factored form.
Note that this video does NOT use a calculus approach, and therefore does not consider the critical points.
The first step that I always use is to identify the degree of the polynomial function. We can determine the degree of a polynomial in factored form by counting up the number of x terms that are multiplied in the expression. In this example you will see that one of the binomials has an exponent of 2. So in total we have four x's being multiplied in our function. This tells us that we are working with a degree 4 polynomial.
The next step is to examine the sign of the leading coefficient of our polynomial function. In the example in this video, you will see that we have a positive leading coefficient. A degree 4 polynomial with a positive leading coefficient will always have end behavior of Q2 to Q1.
As a final step, we can identify the x-intercepts and y-intercept of our degree four polynomial function. We then take each key piece of information that we found and plot it all together on our graph. Connecting everything with a smooth curve will allow us to create the graph of this degree 4 polynomial function.
