  • Top fire chiefs and administrators with the South Adams County Fire Department, along with some of their board members, have regularly taken their spouses along to winter conferences in Florida and fall conferences in Colorado's high country, billing taxpayers for their spouses' meals and other expenses, and extending their stays before and after conferences.

Absolutely an abuse. Termination and frankly I'm ok if jail time is an option. Especially that board member complaining that the public information requests need to stop.

The biggest issue here is that these are employees who are paid with taxpayer dollars.
My dad worked for for-profit insurance companies who paid for him to bring his wife to conferences abroad and turn it into a mini vacation, but they didn’t use taxpayer dollars as they were not a nonprofit organization like the workers in this scenario who misused government issued funding.
I work for nonprofits and this behavior is unreal honestly. They should have jail time or at least sentenced and repayment for their crimes to society. People who work for nonprofits understand every dollar is super important… never ethically would be spent on an employees personal vacation. This came out after being audited which is done regularly at nonprofits so these people are truly dumb ngl.

The vacation itself is atrocious. The fact they brought their spouses, stayed extra days before and after, was icing on the cake.
Pay it back or those spouses better start firefighting as well.
Fighting for their spouses to attend is one thing but why do taxpayers have to pay for a stay at a lavish hotel and lavish meals. Pay for bar rental, etc. They literally could have still attended the conference while staying at a Motel 6 in town. What happened to per diems? Why is their expense unlimited before any audit?

I have taken my wife to many conferences I have attended. We have also stayed extra days a few times.
I've always booked my spouse on a separate airline ticket that I paid for.
Extra nights in a hotel or extra days on a rental car were paid for by myself (in the case of the rental car I would reimburse my employer for any extra days - they had a policy and a method to do that).
I've done that since I got married. I've done that with several employers and they had no issue with my taking my wife or extending the trip a few days as long as I paid for my wife and the extra days myself (in fact - they encouraged employees to do so).
I cannot conceive of expecting my employer to pay my wife's expenses or for extra days.
What is wrong with these people
