  • Noel Cragg is playing the Daskin Janko prototype MIDI controller at his home in the San Francisco bay area. The music is the first half of Dave Brubeck's "Strange Meadow Lark." In addition to being an excellent musician, Noel is also a brilliant electronic and software engineer. I'm very grateful for his help in developing the keyboard.

    This thing has so much potential, and yet there is also a great probability that it will not gain the media exposure it deserves once released. It might be interesting get forward-thinking keyboard players with social media visibility such as Jordan Ruddess on board to put the Daskin in the spotlight. It might also be an idea to use crowdfunding to give this a final push. You already have working prototypes and rather mesmerizing performance videos so it's clear this ain't vaporware.

      estoy convencido de que ésto ayuda a perder una distinción fundamental entre cada nota, si todas son iguales entre si INCLUSIVE en el teclado, perdemos mucha apreciación de cada nota (porque yá con el temperamento igualado es difícil crear relaciones sensoriales entre cada nota, el teclado "heterogeneo" ayuda en ésa falencia del temperado) Es un interesante ejercicio, pero le veo más ventajas a una forma tan poco homologada como lo es el teclado clásico, más que una esclavitud fué un palo tutor de la música occidental.

      ok I'll take the bait - so why the strange layout?

    • @larryseyer
      @larryseyer 10 лет назад +9

      Tom Parish
      One of the things a musician has to be able to do is play songs in multiple keys.
      Playing any musical instrument is largely about finger positions and muscle memory. Events happen too fast to 'think' which finger needs to go in a particular position. So hours and hours of practice are required to 'learn and program' the finger and hand positions.
      Today's piano keyboard requires a musician to learn a different finger or hand position for EACH AND EVERY KEY that a song will be played in.
      This means that to play a song in all twelve keys, you need to learn the song using twelve DIFFERENT finger and hand positions.
      As you can imagine, many people give up in disgust because of the difficulty in learning (much less remembering) the different finger and hand positions.
      This keyboard layout allows the musician to learn the finger and hand positions of ANY song ONCE, and then be able to play that song in ANY key without changing ANY finger positions.
      Why this isn't adopted as the STANDARD for piano keyboards is because TRADITION is a rampant virus flowing through the veins of music schools. Clearly, this is a better piano keyboard layout and makes much more sense.
      However, the same could be said of the DVORAK computer keyboard layout as compared to the QWERTY typewriter layout. It has been proven over and over again that the DVORAK keyboard layout is a MUCH faster way to enter letters via humans than a QWERTY layout. But people are not learning it because of the 'tradition' virus.
      There have been a few brave companies who have adopted this piano layout, but because of economics (i.e. money dictates policy) humans experience (once again) sub-standard interfaces.
      If I was starting out again learning piano now, I would learn THIS piano layout.
      And if I was starting out again learning how to type, I would learn the DVORAK keyboard layout.
      I'm sure this will incite flames... so flame away - You'll only be proving you're infected with the virus.

    • @jaminfred
      @jaminfred 9 лет назад +1

      Larry Seyer Yes this is true of any human (or computer) interface. It only has to be first and good enough, and it isn't worth the hassle to relearn a superior alternative, as you mention with DVORAK. With computer keyboards this is especially true, since they are not even the primary input device anymore. If I had invested any time in learning piano, I definitely would not relearn a Janko layout - there's only so much time. But I and a whole new generation of musicians do not have this problem, as long as word gets out about the advantages and improved playing capabilities and improvisation that could be demonstrated due this better design. I mean, the keyboard layout IS the entire interface to the piano, so it is THE primary concern.

    • @skiptop1000
      @skiptop1000  20 дней назад

      The fingering is different, so if you can play this song on a regular keyboard, you would have to learn the new fingering on the Janko. But then transposing the song would be easy (unlike on a regular keyboard).

      It's sort of like a Chromatone. The keys are bigger, and shaped differently. And each key moves independently. The note layout is essentially the same, except there is no chromatic row at the top.
      None of the keys have different diagonal spacing. Maybe it looks that way because the key rows are terraced, like a wide staircase.
