My tan Wurly was the first keyboard I ever bought about 1973. I still remember playing the intro to "Joy To the World" live with my first band when it was a hit. Wow. Hearing that audience react to those notes gave me chills and I almost stopped playing. Never get tired of playing it. I've played most of those tunes, great trip man!

Those pieces of music you played made me realize how much music theory the composers of those songs must have know. They used quite complicated harmonic progressions here and there, which sounds fabulous and impressive. You inspired me to study some too.
Even the ones that were originally played with a Rhodes still sound pretty good on the Wurly. It’s funny, I used to like the sound of the Rhodes better, but as I’ve gotten older, I gravitate towards the Wurly.
I’ve had the same experience. I loved the clean chimey sound of the Rhodes, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve come to vastly prefer the grainy texture of the Wurly sound
....ahhhhh......I loved the Wurly so much. So many great tunes were done with that. I particularly enjoyed the Supertramp as they really used it a lot with some great tunes. Although These Eyes, Ride Captain Ride and Steely Dan.....oh my......these were truly some great tunes too.
Great video and a great idea. The Wurly just doesn't get enough credit. The electric piano that Jimmy Greenspoon used for the original 1971 studio recording of Joy To The World was actually a Hohner Pianet T. It absolutely DID have a very similar sound to the famous Wurly 200 especially when you played it hard and loud. You could get those cool distortions and overtones like what you hear Ian Mclagan playing on Stay With Me by Rod Stewart --- which was a Wurly.
Good stuff! Great to see love for Misty Mountain Hop! Probably could have added No Quarter - although I've read it was a Hohner Electra Piano T they used... sure sounds like a Wurly though.
Hey that was a lot of fun. That instrument (Rhodes included) is intrinsically connected to so many awesome tunes. And while this one isn’t really my bag, Just the Way You Are certainly has that iconic Rhodes + Phase 90 (I think). Anyway, kudos!
Thanks for sharing! My son started a band about a year ago, he plays piano/keyboards . He's going to be 25 and they play the classics...I'll share this with him!
Listening to this reminds me that I am but an intermediate player. You are an excellent , advanced player. Well done sir! You should be teaching. I would be proud to have you as my teacher.
I saw the title of this video and the first song I thought of was I am The Walrus. Not disappointed... then I heard Babe as I was typing this comment and my soul is full. My two favourite bands. Thank you for sharing this, you play brilliantly.
Brilliant. One day I will own an electric piano. That Wurli sounds magnificent and you really rock that machine. Thanks for taking the time and effort.
Wurlitzer or whatever, you're amazing wherever you play, Tom. Love trying to guess at these songs, as they bring back so many memories from 'way back when' as a kid. Thanks for performing these for all of us!
Thanks so much for doing all of these intros on the Wurlitzer. Sounds great! And I really appreciate that you included a list of all the songs that you played interest for. So often I hear a song demonstrated on a piano or keyboard and they don’t say what the name of this song is and I can’t remember it. Same with all of your piano intros. Love them
@@tomhammermusic a few more to consider: "Get It Right Next Time" - Gerry Rafferty "Jeans On" - David Dundas "I'm Outta Love" - Anastacia "Dream Weaver" - Gary Wright "Trying Too Hard" - Kate Ceberano (has a very Beatles/Walrus kind of feel, this song - I love it)
Pianos are expensive too, but there are literally hundreds of Piano manufactures in existance. Surely the Electric Piano market can support one or two makers! Oh yes, we have Vintage Vibe and Rhodes is back with the MK 8 soon!

Yes!!! Steely Dan Pretzel Logic.
Donald Fagen has just…..got it 😎
Since you asked, my fave is Ray Charles What'd I Say, then Led Zeppelin Misty Mountain Hop, then Supertramp Goodby Stranger
First thought in my head was "find this dude and jam with him!" - bunch of great memories in this bunch of riffs! Thanks!
Great performance and rhythmic feel!
Did you learn these all by ear?

The intro to "You never done it like that" from The Captain and Tenille is very cool.
Impeccable taste
Love the sound of the electric piano. Wish they would use them today. So many great songs from the past!
riders on the storm!
Next round.
Lots of hooks were recorded on a Rhodes and a Wurlitzer. Thank you for a great presentation.
This Hanson brother has some CHOPS!! Nicely done.

Gotta love the wurley!
Agreed!
I spend years trying to get the timing for the end of the "what I say" lick, You nailed it.!
Thanks. It all takes time
Played Name that tune and got 18, only because some names were lost to the haze of the 70's.All familiar tunes. Good job! Ride Captain Ride!

Yes the classics. Hard to beat.
“All I have is a Wurlitzer” 😃 this is my favorite video of yours! Awesome song selections!
Have you ever heard Supertramp's Crime of the Century? Classic desert island.
Yes always loved that album.

Breese Learning would like to thank you for this very well performed demonstration! Muchas gracias!
Was hoping you included Dancin' in the Moonlight and was not disappointed!
Ok, now after watching this, I'm on a quest to learn the distinction between Wurlitzer and Rhodes.
Both a great in their own way. It is interesting to find what songs are played with which. Of the ones I played more were on the Wurlitzer.
Always loved the sound of the Wurly. Thanks for putting all these songs together. So hypnotic.

I've been drumming along to almost all of them on the desk!! Sounds great!
The sound of my life. The usung hero instrument of the great songs in the lives of us later boomers. Beautiful job!
So nice to stumble across this trip down memory lane.
A great pickup of many keyboard classics....

Very nice. Great playing. Thsnks for sharing.
This was really amazing. So many greats from that one instrument.
Missed Taxi and Riders on the storm. All of it, spot on!! :)
More to come. Thanks
I have watched this so many times, love it.

I love the Styx song !
Loved it, brought many smiles. What a musician. Thank you.

Fantastic playing! Right on. Wurly is the best sound.

Dancin' in the Moonlight, fantastic...
Excellent!
Nicely done. Takes me back.
Thanks Tom, you are very good!
Now I discovered great songs, thank you!!!
Fun with a Wurli!
Always loved Bill's "Rosalinda's Eyes". I've always been more of a Rhodes guy, but the Wurly didnt sound too bad on the Rhodes intros. Well done.
At least three Stevie Wonder’s intros so far! Fun stuff.
Fantastic selection. Inspiring
Good job !
I almost knew them all ...
Great selection and very well played!! Really glad to hear Rosalinda's Eyes, very underappreciated song with a great wurly part
