Y'all gave me the urge to garden again. After over 30 years of not growing a thing I've got raised gardens and containers and I'm trying grow bags as well. Everything is doing really good. Thank you for giving me that nudge. We always had a garden every year and I'm glad I was taught how to grow vegetables. ♥️ God bless! Oh and I planted some of the smallest tomatoes plants too!

I love this method of stringing tomatoes vertically! I used your method last year and it really works. It’s so easy and quick to just make a slip knot on the supported stalk, and I tie mine to an “s” hook on the overhead pole. To all those intrigued, try this method, it’s simple and efficient.

    • @histeve1110
      @histeve1110 Год назад

It’s also a great method for sweet bell peppers. The weight of their fruit can really bend the stalks, and a little support goes a long way with those plants..

About 3 years ago, I learned to trellis my tomato plants up a single string to a hook using tomato clips on a single vine from a market gardener's YT channel in Canada. I will never go back to any other way! Sometimes I will leave a second runner if I caught it too late. It's easy to drop a second string attached to a clip to support it. I use a tent stake in the ground to keep the string from pulling the plant base.
We get high winds frequently where I live, too, so I protect my indeterminate tomatoes under a portable cattle panel hoop tunnel, since I rotate my beds. I just hook them on the covered panel. Works great!
The key for me in using row covers to protect plants is to cover them at the warmest time of the afternoon to capture the rising heat for the night.

Also string up my tomatoes in my greenhouse but start my string in the soil under the plant when I'm planting. Roots grow over and hold the plant in place. Wind stem as it grows. Has worked awesome for the last 3 years that we've been using this method!

Check out Houweling's Tomatoes. I was amazed when Casey invited me to tour the operation a few years ago. They tie the plants just like you are doing and then "walk" each plant down the line as it grows. Their plants produce for about 2 years and will wind up being 30 feet long when replaced. Each plant grows in a container just a little larger than what you sell at the market.
They also do cucumbers in the same method and have beehives inside their greenhouses.
    Very cool.

My favorite Italian dressing dry mix recipe in bulk.
3 tbsp oregano, 2 tbsp each parsley, onion powder, salt and sugar, 1 tbsp. each Basil and garlic, 1/2 tbsp each thyme, pepper, paprika and (optional) celery salt. Store in mason jar.
To make the dressing (serving size one person):
Mix 1 tsp dry mix (shake mason jar well before use) 2 tbsp vinegar, 2 tbsp water and 1 tbsp oil. Let sit for 10 min for the herbs to rehydrate.

I can't believe I found someone who loves tomatoes as much as I do. When I was around 7-8 years old I used to ride my bike through a trail that my grandfather made from our house to his for my daily fill of tomatoes. Grandpa always had a small wooden stool, a salt shaker, and a bucket of water waiting for me in the middle of the garden. I would sit there until my little tummy was full of tomatoes. Now that I am older my husband makes sure our garden has anywhere from 35 to 40 tomato plants every year so I have enough to eat and to can salsa, diced tomatoes, and sauce.

We got grey and cold weather again after having a couple of beautiful sunny days. Two days ago we had 24 hours of heavy snowfall and the day after it rained the whole day, typically April weather. It is such a mess outside now and our gravel road is not fun to drive on. But we snow and rain cleans away the old snow so I try not to complain!
I have always used strings for my tomatoes, it is easy to wind the plants around them while they grow taller. Now I does not have a big greenhouse like yours so I have to cut them at 6,5 feet and let 1-3 sucker branches grow from beneath. This summer, with a bigger and higher greenhouse (and more tomato plants) I will probably get those clips.

I have a friend and former co-worker who is a manager of a number high tunnel grow houses for a mid-sized plant/nursery retail company. She and her assistants are experimenting this growing year with using bubble wrap vs row cover vs woven weed block as frost/freeze protection in the tunnels. This experiment is only in it's first year, rather informal and they haven't made any decisions yet. This is just for themselves to see if they can do a bit better than the row cover they traditional use and also because they had trouble re-stocking their row cover inventory for the last couple years. And for a bit of fun. But the bubble wrap appears to keep the undercover temps a few degrees warmer than the row cover and the weed block; however, she told me that the bubble wrap needs to come off or lifted up in the morning once the temps start to climb back into a safe range as they are worried about the limited airflow with the plastic. And the weed block needs to be lifted in the AM as well so the sun can come in. So far she says they all seem to work and she says the bubble wrap looks really pretty when it reflects the night-lights they have in each house. Just thought I'd mention this as some of you all may get caught off guard with these up and down temperatures we all seem to be getting this spring and may need to look at a quick alternative to row cover. Your garden looks great this spring and I hope you have a wonderful growing season. I'm looking forward to watch more preserving videos and the season moves along. Happy growing!

Instead of tying the string directly to the plant stem, try digging down a bit more into the dirt and just drop in about a foot of string into the bottom of the hole. Place some dirt on top of it & then plant your tomatoes. The weight of the dirt & the plant will hold the string securely in the dirt eliminating the need to tie it directly to the stalk. Just a thought 🤔. Have a great day 😊.

Good morning! It's Friday. I almost always stop what I am doing, and sit and watch your videos. I look forward to them. This week, I had to be "a gardening adult", and I didn't have it in me to sit, and look at your beautiful plants! Nothing against you two! You are my top 3 on YT! It's just been a very frustrating, hard week... This is only a garden. IT's only plants. There are real people suffering REAL hurt and damage from the weather. There is no comparison. We had a storm blow through, that pretty much wiped out most of my garden ( 3+ inches of hail). It's almost May, in Florida. Start over? Walk away? Is it to late to try? I just spent nearly 3 months on these plants, and they were just starting to produce. If I start over, and these fail due to weather, heat? 🤔Then I am right back to where I am now. My insides are screaming, you have to get back up, and that is the truth. No matter what happens, we have to get back up, and continue. I have to take a deep breathe and realize that If I quit, I know I will be right back where I am now. If I try, and fail, here I am..If I try, and it works....In whatever I do decide to do...time still moves forward..I might as well be doing something constructive!

I use a stick that I plant with the tomato plant and attach a string to the stick which is attached to a wire up above. I think it is sturdier that way.

Seems crazy because I am picking tomatoes, jalapeños and zucchini in zone 9b. So glad your efforts paid off and no frost damage!!

Thanks for the cover tip. Going to try them on my Current bushes until they get taller. Hopefully I will get more berries than the birds this year.

I suspect you don't need those loops in the mason string. You could just tie the string to a nail or stick and drive it into the soil beside the plant. Seeing as the plants are attached to the string with clips already. The benefit obviously being that the stake and string can stay in the greenhouse for future years.

what a beautiful video. When I saw all those beautiful tomato plants I really got a craving for tomatoes. then I went to our cellar and opened a glass of tomato juice from last year's garden. It's just delicious. thank you for all your inspiration and all the lovely time together through your nice videos. you both are such heart loving quiet people and I really like watching you.
