Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

You are my very favorite of the homestead channels I watch. You are so informative and your viewers can learn a lot from you. I have had to give up much of my growing due to health conflicts but am able to keep a 4 by 8 foot raised bed and still enjoy my tomatoes, peppers, cukes, radishes, a few carrots, and some greens. You bring back such fond memories. Keep up the good work of helping to teach more homesteaders.

Seems like with okra you either love it or hate it. Nothing in between. I love okra any way I can get it. Not able to do any gardening, live in a tiny home in an rv park with no yard space and my deck is covered so no sun for containers. A few years ago my daughter’s MIL grew okra on her small farm and I feasted. She hasn’t done any since and I miss it.

When Kevin said you had 28 tomato plants in the greenhouse, I thought to myself, "That's only 8 more plants than I grow, and I only have a backyard garden. That doesn't seem like a lot for a homesteader/farmer who loves tomatoes." Then he went on to say that was only half the amount that was planted, and that made more sense. 😂 Widhing upu a productive growing season. Good luck at the farmer's market!

I actually tried the Clemson Spineless okra in tubs last year and it actually went very well. I'm guessing the tubs I had are very close to the size of the ones you have and planted 5 or 6 in each bucket. Being over crowded kept them much smaller than normal but I was still able to get multiple harvests from them and enjoyed plenty of pickled and fried okra thought out our FL summer. Give it a try. It can't hurt. :)

And they happen to be jet star. This year I thought I would plant the seeds because there was talk of seed shortage. And you mentioned Jets stars are a hybrid which I never knew. So my beautiful plants will probably not get any fruit or if they do, they will not be jetstar. Now I must go buy plants. Thanks for saving me.

So interesting to see this, I’ve got a poly tunnel coming next week that is almost this size, not quite as wide, so I really have an idea of the space now! I haven’t started any plants yet, but will get some young ones from the market when it’s built, I will get some seeds in asap to go outdoors in a few weeks time. I’ll be growing in the ground but I’m so happy that you re-use lick buckets, so many times I see people buying yet more plastic and I wonder how many more will be purchased instead of sourcing old containers to re-use.
If you have any spare buckets I HIGHLY recommend growing melons, I tried a few varieties last year but my favourite was called Minnesota Midget. Small fruits you could hardly see under the leaves but you could smell them from several feet away, in fact my dogs sometimes got to them before me!! Which was totally ok because I grow a lot of fruit for them, but nice to have some myself 😂oh and Luffa is huge fun, I grew some outdoors but this year will go under cover as they seemed to really get going late and not all the fruits ripened

Tom berries and any of the spoon tomato varieties seem to turn into big bushes and it felt like they took longer to ripen than other tomatoes (but once they start they won’t stop) and you might be able to grow them through the winter if you can protect them a little inside the greenhouse. Very prolific. They took over half of my garden. This year they will go into containers and not into the ground for sure. 😂

Heard your comment about having to buy seed for one of your tomato varieties because it was a hybrid so you couldn’t save seed for next year. There is a work-around if you have a space either in your house or in your sprout house over the winter. Towards the end of the growing season, prune off the leader from a mature plant. Strip the leaves from the stem as you did when planting and either stick the stem in a glass of water or into a small container of potting soil. The stems should put out roots like they did when they were initially planted. Now all you need to do is find a place with light (grow lights will work) and where they can be kept at 50 to 60 degrees F until the next planting season. The goal is not to keep them in production, just alive. If they start to get leggy after a couple of months, repeat the procedure and re-root cuttings. The cuttings will be clones of the hybrids you started with.
Full disclosure, I live in Northern California and I can keep my tomatoes going until mid-December and start them up again outside in a cold frame the beginning of March but I have managed to keep a hybrid I purchased as a seedling from Home Depot for 3 years running. Might be a bit more challenging in your part of the country but, in theory, it may be possible.
Fuller disclosure, I got the idea from a Charles Dowding video. He grows a no-dig market garden in the south of England with first and last frost dates similar to yours.
Good luck with the homestead this year. I’ll pray the tornados leave you alone and only hit the empty spaces where they will do less damage.

I watch every video, and have for quite awhile, also subscribed and share. Thank you so much for them----and for no bad language. Love you guys, and count you as friends even tho we've not met.

Fried Okra was a staple for us growing up, im pretty sure its the first thing i ate as a kid. Grilled okra with olive oil, salt & pepper is where its at tho. I actually prefer grilled now over fried and thats saying something from this southern girl lol
