    EXTRA TIP - It is best to use a cardboard box rather than plastic bucket to cover tomatoes and other crops. The corrugated design of the walls of the cardboard box will better protect your plants. I always start a few tomatoes outside in my garden simply by covering them with cardboard boxes over night. All you need is a box that is tall enough and weights to hold the 4 flaps of the box securely to the ground. You guys have been such an inspiration for me!

    I wanted to mention to you a great Chanel for you to follow and keep up with the weather. Ryan Hall y’all is awesome! I’ve followed him for over a year and he’s never steered me wrong. Please check him out if you’re not already familiar with him. He can give you the heads up you might need to protect your plants.

    To save your tomatoes, if you get a freeze, sit a gallon jug of water in your tub next to the plant. Then add your covering on top. I've actually done this in ground and covered with plastic around a tomato cage with two jugs of water. It worked at 18 degrees!

    • @rt3box6tx74
      @rt3box6tx74 Год назад +3

      When I had a house full of breakfast cereal eaters I used 3 plastic gallon jugs of water touching each other around each tomato plant. On hot days I walk by and move two of them a few inches away so some of the heat can dissipate. I left them in place until mid June most years. Fastest growing tomato plants ever. Tomatoes are tropical, love heat up to a point. I believe it's the overnight heat they like, since I'm in the colder quadrant of TX, where day vs night temps can fluctuate over 50°- 60°.

    • @classicrocklover5615

      What temp was the water in the jug?

    • @swancottage1929
      @swancottage1929 Год назад +3

      It was luke warm. Not sure of the exact temp. It was a fluke cold night as days had been warmer. Longer cold spell would probably be too much for the plants. Another comment said use more water jugs per plant.

    In Eastern Ontario Canada we are still knee high in snow, so we are at watching you plant and enjoying your joy at playing in the soil (notice I didn’t say dirt). Our last frost date is May 24th, hope the snow is gone by then, we have had about 350 cm or 11 ft of snowfall this winter - which is apparently not a record.

    We are in West Texas(Abilene) and have already planted spinach, onions and potatoes in our garden. I purchased some tomatoes yesterday to put in bigger pots until they are safe for the garden next month. Keeping them outside but can bring indoors if a freeze comes. Kevin, about using plastic buckets in greenhouse to protect your tomatoes- years ago we had planted tomatoes in our garden and a freeze was coming. We covered some with plastic tubs and some with cardboard boxes. The plants with cardboard survived, but the plastic didn’t. We thought the plastic conducted cold? We don’t know the science of all that. Just wanted to mention it to you.

    • @dudefullofjelly
      @dudefullofjelly Год назад +19

      Its not so much that the plastic conducted the cold but just the cardboard is a much better insulator than a single layer plastic

      I have a winter ‘deck garden’ I start in January here in Northern California. We have the containers up against the house. I have lots of lettuce varieties close to the house. Out against the rail we have kale in pots. They are thriving even after two different freak snows. Snow melts within a day or two here. Only problem is with the bird loving our lettuce, so we have bird net covering it all. A fun time of year, looking forward to the big garden.

    Zone 8b here in Texas. Everything is outside this year. Average last frost is Mar 15, but forecast is great for the next few weeks. We are in the low 80's this week. Sometimes, we get a cold front move through before Easter, but I'm watching. Carried over my Ancho pepper in a large pot in the greenhouse, and it's taking off. In the ground and growing - carrots, beets, onions, potatoes, broccoli, sweet peas, kale. Just planted pole beans. Lettuce is getting mature. Cilantro is bolting. End of the month, will plant cucumber, summer and winter squash. Tomato and pepper starts are hardening off. Finished new tomato bed yesterday, and still have the new pepper bed to prep. Volunteer tomatoes are up at the cattle panel arches and will need to be thinned. These are what we call Texas Wild (think it's sometimes sold as Matt's Wild). They are a currant style tomato, and sweet as candy. They even produce when temps are in the 90's. Next fall, I hope to have my cattle panel hoophouse done to carry over some tomatoes into the winter. Trying some dwarf and micro tomatoes for that.

Notice if your neighbors have raspberry and blackberry plants and get some free berries (or go and buy at grocery store/farmers market ... and grow the berry seeds into baby berry plants ! Same for getting some dormant grape vines, rootone, and plant and start up the grape vineyard. One can also start working up kiwi, currants, gooseberry, elderberry, blueberry, and honey berry plants.

I kept wanting to put something in the ground, but i let the nay sayers in the local garden group talk me out of it. The cold isn't our big problem down here in Houston, it's the extreme heat that makes our tomatoes go sterile most of the summer. I wish I would have taken that risk and gotten a good start on everything.

    How awesome that you got to experience first hand how lettuce just comes back from a freeze! Shame it's too bitter now, because it looks pretty, and still hasn't bolted. Admittedly ours is bitter too, but most have started the tower up to bolt maneuver. In my South Carolina garden the broccoli is mostly done, and the remaining heads want to blow in the heat, but naturally we have a freeze coming in a week. Brussels Sprouts were over and done really by February.
    White flies and aphids love winter, when most of their predators go to sleep. White flies showed up in droves late fall, as my new pest for winter, so they have been annoying this year while I'm trying to wait for the brown lacewings, that also showed up later, to get established and sort them out. Had to cover everything with elevated layers of frost clothes, during a snap that went down to 11F, and worried I was incubating whiteflies. Except the semi-perennial kales, that were uncovered, still had the whiteflies after the cold snap. So badly even that they had to be cut down. Only one has come back yet. Hope the rest come back.
    Asian ladybugs/ladybeetles by the way, are what people order from US companies for aphids. No one sells our native ladybugs. Same deal with the praying mantises. The established imports are much easier to gather up, I'd imagine. We have both kinds of ladybugs naturally in our garden, but only the Asian origin ones try to hide in the house when it's cold. (They need nectar or fresh moisture if they are in human dwellings too long, because they get dehydrated. Not much, and very shallow. Like a small bottle cap.) The natives are more active over our winter, but not enough to handle a whitefly infestation. Our native Carolina Mantis love the back porch, and every spring we are stepping very very carefully, trying to get to the garden without walking on tiny babies.
    Got my cabbage in very late, choy, chinese cabbage too, and they may not make it through the heat before going right to bolt. Best time to get all that in the ground here, from indoor starts back in August/September, is late Nov or Dec. Not so hot they immediately bolt, but enough time to get established to handle the more frequent freezes in January. Started the long grow time peppers a few days ago! Although they will be in and out of the house, in increasing pot sizes, until May. When it finally is safe outside to plant peppers. Tomatoes will not get started until about two weeks from now.
    The pruned down peppers in the garage, overwintering by the water heater tank, are still iffy as to if they will survive. Some overwinter great from the first October or November freeze, right up until March or so when it's 80+F day after day. Then a freeze gets them while the sap is flowing. Always worth it to try though, because they get off to a super fast start, if they make it! Plus those new fruit seeds will be even better adapted to our area, and maybe will stay more dormant through March in a garage...

    Hello guys. I love watching you guys. Your thought out, reached, and test approach is helpful and enjoyable.
    Your early experience with weeds led to weed cloth and now that you’ve gotten better control I’m wondering how a single bed in the no till method with a layer of cardboard and 6-8 inches of compost and 18 inch walkway on either size with 6-8 inches of wood chips. From what I’m seeing in my own garden and from many of the market gardeners in you tube, it smothers the weeds, helps with the rainy and dry season both but provides what the soil needs, builds the soil and allows the soil web to thrive which helps plants thrive.
    It would be an awesome experiment to see a side by side comparison over a couple of years.

    I also had a bad experience with Kellogs Organic Raised Bed Potting Mix. I used it in my vertical planters and several fabric grow bags for the fall 2021 and spring 2022 growing seasons. Nothing would grow well even though I used amendments. I wasted a lot of time and money. When I dumped it out a month ago to replace it with my homemade potting mix, it was hard as a rock. I had to beat it with a mallet to break it up, so that I could dispose of it. I believe my potting mix will make a HUGE difference for my plants to grow and be healthy. I refilled a vertical planter and 41 grow bags. Lots of hard work but it was a labor of love for my veggies.
    I live in TX, zone 8b, and we are right at our last frost date. It's been in the 80s already with night temps around the low 60s, so I'm hoping we don't get a surprise late freeze. I started my seedlings indoor on Jan 22nd, and they are now 6 weeks old since germination. I am going to wait one more week to transplant them outside. Seeded red cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, bell peppers, lettuce and 6 varieties of dwarf tomatoes. My tomato plants have grown so much that they are too tall to put on my grow light rack. Been hardening them off outside. First time growing dwarf tomatoes, so I'm excited to see how well they do after being transplanted and how they taste. God bless.

    Hi Kevin & Sarah I have had a wonderful tomato season this year. I have many ziplock bags full of tomatoes in the freezer ready to make sauce etc with over the cooler season. Usually the tomato season ends in late January in my area, but this year I am still growing tomatoes. They are coming to an end though maybe another couple of weeks. In a normal weather season our first frost is around April 25, Anzac Day here in Australia. But with the craziness of the weather pattern who knows this year. Currently building a greenhouse to the garden, which I am very excited about. Still waiting for my chickens though that is a plan moving forward. Kevin I wish you a bumper tomato 🍅 season so you get to enjoy those delicious treats.

    Hi guys I live in New Brunswick Canada and I still have 2-4 feet of snow. My electric chicken netting is half under the snow so the dogs can walk out over the fence and not even see it. Enjoy your climate. starting my seeds under lights now but it will be June before I can put anything outside. We hope to get our green house up this year. Keep up the good work you are doing.

    Here in Minnesota I have always planted my tomatoes in a trench by laying it down. It keeps the roots in the warmer area and gives the plant more area to absorb moisture.
