Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 3 new videos every week! Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

We pick our coloured peppers as soon as they start to turn from green - the tiniest spot of colour - and let them ripen in a cool room - they don't deteriorate if we make sure they are dry when we pick them and they taste great. I never, ever use green peppers - not a flavour we enjoy at all, but the coloured ones are a favourite for all!

I plant my sweet peppers with 2' between each. Plenty of airflow, and minimal problems. Organic near Buffalo, NY. Gotta wait till the end of August- sometimes Sept.... But worth it. Growing Yellow Monster, Ozark red and Orange bell from Baker creek. All are doing well!

If you can re-grow your crossed jalapeno and bell pepper variety again next year, you should give it a name! There are many of us, including me, who would love to get some seeds if they stay true to their cross.
Peppers are like tomatoes in that they will continue to ripen off the vine. It seems to me that my peppers ripen faster and better when they are stored in a box with some green tomatoes in a cool temperature about 65 to 70 degrees. So your unripe green peppers picked with just a hint of color will ripen to those orange and red colors we all love so much in just a few weeks.

Sarah, the Jamaican Hot Yellow peppers are great when sweet pickled. They are pretty warm but when balanced with honey pickling the are delicious. They also usually produce massive amounts of peppers (one plant is usually enough). Tepin hot pepper are also very good (extreme heat). Their heat is highly dependent on how much you water them(barely water them and they give a ghost pepper a run for the money). Their best use is to feed to poultry. In Mexico the turkeys eat them for coyote protection. The peppers give the meat a great spicy (warm) flavor.

You can roast them all kind peppers and mix with garlic, parsley, vinegar and olive oil and jar them as pickles for winter. It is so refreshing on toast for breakfast or any snack. Also take their seeds out and stock them in Ziploc for stuffed peppers and freeze them, whenever you want to make it just prepare the filling and take out the peppers frozen, fill them out and cook. It will be delicious summer stuffed peppers in winter. ♥️♥️♥️ Thank you so much for nice garden.

In addition to saving the seeds from that pepper cross, consider rooting a cutting now with the intent of overwintering it. I do that here in Atlanta. As long as the healthy plant has moisture, some light and doesn't freeze, it will endure winter in my unheated garage until next year when the soil warms up.
That way if the seeds don't give you what you want, the overwintered plant will.

My garden space is limited, so I planted my peppers this year as part of my container garden. Unfortunately, I lost every plant. Like so many others, we had extreme amounts of rain in the spring and too many days of extreme heat this summer. And, then, there were the squirrels who dug up so many things. But, lesson learned...I will be ready for them next year...lol. Loved the tour and explanation of the pepper varieties, and will keep it in mind as I plan next year's garden. Thanks, Sarah!

One thing you can make with the ajvarski (sp) peppers is Ajvar, a Czech roasted red pepper and eggplant spread. Mix 3.3lb roast red peppers with 2.2lb roasted eggplant, ~6 chopped hot chilies, ~6 crushed cloves of garlic, ~1.5 tsp salt, black pepper, 1/3 cup olive oil, 2 tbsp red wine vinegar. All the flavors are to taste. The spread is great on bread as a dip, as a sandwich spread, as a pasta sauce, as topping on grilled chicken, etc... I hope you try this and enjoy.

You should roast the paprika peppers before you grind them. I believe that is the method. I remember doing that when I made it. I used to do all this too. Love your channel.

If u blanch the pepper leaves u can eat them. Also freeze them after blanching. Try it. YOU CANNOT EAT THEM WITHOUT BLANCHING! Soy sauce, red pepper, sesame oil and sesame seeds, black pepper, green onions.

I made cowboy candy for the first time 1 week ago. I'm TRYING to wait atleast 1 more week to pop a jar and taste them for the first time. I love watching all your videos. Can't wait for your cowboy candy recipe. I had 4 -12oz jars of brine left over from my batch. I went ahead and canned the extra brine. I'll use to make more candy or maybe something else....Thanks from Fairmont, WV for sharing your beautiful gardens.

Good morning. I haven't grown any vegetables in a very long time (tomatoes). Orange bell peppers are my favorite. Have a good day. God bless.

I love the Lemon Drop peppers. Last year when the frost came we covered with a blanket and they continued on. Just before the hard freeze hit I pulled the plants (cut them off at the bottom) and brought them inside. To my amazement they continued to ripen and I was able to keep almost every pepper that was on the plant. My suggestion for a hot pepper I think you will enjoy is the Brazilian Starfish. It is beautiful and productive and wonderful flavor. I cut the across the middle and dehydrated them and they make fabulous tiny bowls for a creamy dip, that is if you want a spicy kick. Give them plenty of room as they get tall and wide. God Bless

Try Big Bertha Peppers. They are slow to start but, once they do they take off . When it gets cold they can be dug up and moved inside, They will keep growing and replanted out side next year, they will keep going.

Love that crossbreed jalapeno. That would be a new one for someone to develop. I dont have luck with my green peppers turning red either. I need to grow more peppers. Blessings

Have Kevin build a smoke house. You can smoke your Jalapenos for chilpotle powder & will also be good for bacon & sausage.

Well you better not get those peppers mixed up or your youngest will be very unhappy. We grow Hungarian sweet peppers for paprika down here, Capsicum annuum, I don't know if they'll grow in your climate. If you have extra of those cross breed between the jalapeno and the bell pepper I would love to have some for seed. I will pay for them, and pay for shipping. I can isolate them so that they will only pollinate each other. your garden is absolutely beautiful, and I know that I'm going on and on so, God bless you and Kevin and the girls.

I just watched your episode where you tied up Tomato plants with cotton string which you get at walmart in the kitchen department. Head to the yarn section and get cotton yarn. More for your money and works great

I had to pick mine when they first started turning in order to keep them from going bad. Thank you so much for recommending the Emerald Giant Bell. I found the seeds at a different seed Company and I love them for being so thick walled. I got Sweet Chocolate peppers as free seeds from Baker Creek this year so I grew some of them and liked them also. 🌻 ~Shayla
