I needed this 3 years ago, Wikipedia only confused me 😂 and love that you in NZ and Australia use kW, in Europe we're stuck with PS/CV (metric horsepower) and Britain acts all special as always with bhp (imperial horsepower)
bhp might be a an imperial measurement, but it is differently measured from when something is being described in hp. Horsepower is the measured output power from a mechanical or electric source. BHP is measured at the brakes. They are not comparable and definitely doesn't have standard conversion - so an average estimate of 1bhp = 1.014hp is considered. and kW is, by definition, a metric measurement, hence conversion to and from hp(M) is not only standardized, it is also very easy. 1hp = 0.7457kW is the definitive standard.
