  • There are seven recognized species of sea turtles:
    Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
    Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
    Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta)
    Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)
Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea)
Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys kempii)
    Flatback Sea Turtle (Natator depressus)
Sea turtles have streamlined shells and flippers adapted for swimming. The leatherback has a unique leathery shell, while the other species have hard shells. They vary in size from the relatively small Olive Ridley, which can weigh around 100 pounds, to the massive Leatherback, which can weigh over 1,000 pounds.
Nesting: Females return to the beaches where they were born to lay eggs, often traveling great distances. They lay multiple clutches of eggs in a single nesting season.
Eggs and Hatchlings: After a 45-70 day incubation period, hatchlings emerge and make their way to the sea. The temperature of the nest determines the sex of the hatchlings.
Lifespan: Sea turtles are long-lived, often reaching 50 years or more. They take several decades to reach sexual maturity.
