I'm 51. I've had aquariums off and on since I was 7. I've built many tanks, used live plants from LFS and online, and of course those cylindrical containers from the big box stores. This is the FIRST TIME I AM HEARING THIS! 😆🤣 SO nope, you're not the last person on the planet to hear about this. As of this comment, I AM! 😆
I saved the gel too... And successfully rooted a broken anubius in it! Just left it in there under lights, in another jar with saran for humidity, did great! Love your vids, always try to check them out.
Didn’t know about the pot. Thanks! I also have corydoras that dislodge stem plants all the time. But they're too cute, and I must have them in every tank! 😊
I always cut that cup open in order to rinse the gunk off of the roots. If it was weighted enough to hold the plant to the bottom of the aquarium I’d consider using it.
Gosh, I pop the top off and cut down the side of the tube. I never realized I could use that bottom portion as a pot. I think I will try it with my next purchase. Thank you.
I don't know why I think I was the only person using mini pots in an aquarium. But any ways there's a way to protect it from corys. Just put sand and mini pebbles on the top layer. Then sand again on top to hide the pot. Have fun!
I just bought my first aquarium plant! Now that I know how to open the tube, what do I do next? Clean it, quarantine it it? Help me Nano Jedi, you are my only hope!
I'd love to see a video on how to decorate a side facing aquarium. I recently figured out I could fit 2 fives on my fishrack for the space of 1 if I put them side to side.
I did not know or even think about using the bottom cup as a planter. I ride the struggle bus enough just trying to cut the plant out of it without damaging the plant or cutting my fingers on the plastic. I can't imagine the struggle to get it out and all the gel to make it reusable.
The asplanium(so?)fern that you mentioned around 1 minute 50 seconds grows to 5 ft in maturity. Bird's nest Fern is a common name and they remain manageable for some time but not a long-term terrarium dwelling success.
Ok now we need to see it in action! I would be tempted to use it buried in the sand with some hidden substrate in it for those plants that won’t grow in sand alone. Curious to see what that would look like and what that would mean, long term.
Hahaha! I'm mad now. I just set up a 55 gallon tank last month and went to petsmart and almost all of there plants were 50% off. I bought so many tube plants and shredded them with scissors! You are not the last one. I would love to have the $70 worth of tubes I bought to get those planters.
Nope, you are not the last. The one and only time I bought a plant in one of these I used scissors and it turned into a full on wrestling match to get it out.
Not the first 😅 I knew that it existed in the bottom of the tube plants but never actually knew why it was there besides holding the gel medium that it comes with.
I wonder if you could take plant and super glue it to a rock at root level. That way roots go straight into substrate with plant attached to rock. No more Cory problem😮
Literally just cut one of these “planters” open not even 10 mins ago… smh haha I’m an idiot. & it was a tropical one too! Been messing around with aquaponics recently 😎 thanks for the info lol
I have opened them from the bottom, pulled the perforated piece off and tossed the plastic! I want them back! I also wish that plants I have ordered from all different places in the US, came with the clay rings like in the UK! That would be awesome! if anyone knows of a US grower that sends aquarium plants out with the clay rings, please let me know.😊 I have even tried to look them up on Amazon and ordered some, but they ended up being like an inch tall with an inch wide hole, not what I was looking for, using them, but not the flattish orange clay rings with smaller hole that I would love to get my hands on...lol.
Nope, you're not! I.will need to try that! However, I do open from the top. I carefully cut across, open it, and then push up the plant through the opening by the base. Sometimes you can wiggle the plant out of the hole. If you can, all the gunk is contained. I use a plastic bag to put the bottoms in...sometimes you do need to cut it to get the plant out, but the growing medium is contained within the bag.
Time stamp 3:52 shows it. Fill it with substrate of your choice and use as a moveable planter. I also show at 4:11 how I would use it the same way as a terra cotta pot.
But wouldn't plants that are root feeders like swords and crypts need room for their roots to spread out and get nourishment? It seems to me like leaving them in the plastic cup would make them root bound and stifle their growth?
Yes, I agree, that certainly could happen. I think it would be a great way to start plants out though with a plan to move them to a forever home at a later date (out of cup). ☺️
When I get potted plant orders, I keep the gel & add it to the pot, but not with my aquatic plants as I don't want to have to compensate for another variable, especially in my planted tanks where anything that gets loose goes nuts in the water column.

Because we all need more plastic in our world.

The cories will still damage the roots by digging around it. Wedging it in rock cracks works better, IME.
