Refinishing furniture is one of my hobbies. Here's what I would do with that coffee table if I were pressed for time. First, wash/clean the table. Then sand the top completely starting with an 80 Grit to remove the old finish then moving to 100 grit to smooth the wood grain back out. Lastly stain the top whichever color you prefer. One the stain is dry, I would paint the base. Legs and spindles are Difficult to sand and Extremely time consuming and since you are on a schedule paint would be quickest. Once the base is dry, clear coat the entire table with a matte clear coat.
I came here to say the same thing! I'm so glad you picked it up... it has everything you want in it except for the color and you did a great job with the other table!
Regarding refinishing the coffee table. Yes, get rid of yellow oak. Take the table apart as much as you can to work with smaller areas/pieces. You can strip the current finish off and then sand or skip stripping and just sand. You will need to condition the wood before you put the new stain on, it helps evening out the stain. After you stain it use a wipe on polyurethane to seal it. Go with matte finish, then you don't have to concern yourself with getting a gloss finish even. That is my take on refinishing. I am sure there will be others that have more impute than I do.
Growing up we had a large square coffee table with rounded edges. My dad was a stickler on formal dinners - meat and potatoes with all the trimmings. But he traveled a lot on business and came home late a lot. And the deal was if Dad wasn't there, we could have coffee table dinners. We had four great big pillows and we sat on the floor around the table Japanese style and had dinners like Chinese takeout and ... heaven forbid - breakfast for dinner. It was always a lot of fun.
Love the mushroom washboard. Hang it in the Airbnb and put a note on the chalkboard part with the WiFi password on it for your guests or some other type of note.
Love the end of this video. DETERMINED Victory, reminder to subscribe, vulnerable & willing to be helped, personal and family rooted. I've always loved the way you do what you do from day one!
Girl! Let the people help you lift heavy things. LOVE the folk-art! So happy for all of your new projects and to see you smiling finding treasures and sharing with us.
We have a beach condo..We put that round coffee table in with a piece of raised glass on it..guests slide notes and pictures of their visit under the glass for the next guests to enjoy and add to. They love it
Yes, you can use a gel.stain over the existing finish. First, wash with a degreaser and rinse well. Second You should scuff sand with very fine sandpaper (400) with the grain. This will give the stain something to grab on to and smooth any blemishes. Third, apply the gel.stain but don't follow the directions on the can. They want you to apply it thick like paint. Start on the underside and inside of the legs so you can practice and refine your technique before you get to the top. Try rubbing it into the wood with circular motions to get it into the grain and then use long strokes to smooth it with the grain. If that doesn't work, you can use a brush and drag it a bit to make not perfect lines to mimic woodgrain. Since it is oil based it may take a few days to dry. Set up a heater and fan on low. Good luck, you got this !
So glad your taking every other day off with your family! You all need that time! Really enjoyed the photos of your family! I love the low coffee table you picked out! I like the way you do so many different things. Like refinishing furniture! It’s going to be perfect!
Omg yay Finders Keepers. I miss the shopping with you there That oval brass and glass table was stunning you should buy it for your downstairs both. It will sell quickly so put a big price on it. In the meantime it will be gorgeous in there The round oak table is the perfect table great job. I am glad you are taking it a bit easier I miss your videos but it is worth it you are still not 100%ps. Claw foot table heck yeah and what a steal !
I know you dont have time but round coffee table you found would've been awesome if you sanded it down and stained it a darker brown.... ETA: And you did it. So excited to see how it comes out!
I would sand the top really well . Wipe it clean then paint it. Leave the pedestal and legs the color they are which looked more like maple. Find a paint color that blends with your couch or love seat, paint it sanding lightly between coats then seal it. I think you will like it better than staining a wood with yellow tones!
Claw wooden table score!💕The oval glass coffee table was amazing, so beautiful! You could flip it quickly or just use as display table for your finds!🥰
When you refinish any wood you want to start off with a 100 grit sand paper and go up in number value from there, like to 160 and then 200. When you apply the stain it will raise the grain and you will need to sand again but only once at the last grit you used. Then you can use a sealer of some sort, whether it is an acrylic sealer or some other type.
I agree with the suggestion of a gel stain. Check out the fusion one. We did a large cabinet and it turned out great. Requires minimal prep and the have videos to instruct on its use😊
The rounded edges of art deco furniture is called waterfall. A few years ago I bought a vanity that needs to be refinished. It was cheap. It's still catching dust. But there will come a day! I like art deco. Americans dump the same oak furniture as Europeans. 80% is that sort of stuff. It doesn't speak to me at all. Burn it. Last week I bought 8 units of MCM shelve space, some with doors, for 75 euro. Dark rosewood. Manageable damage. Basically planks with nice proportions. No nonsense. Warm. Great deal and solution.
I believe that washboard board was decorated to be a message board. Magnets on the metal for notes and below looked to be a chalk blackboard. The antiquity of the actual antique washboard destroyed. Love the new coffee table. Agree about the color, yuk. Look forward to your refinishing it.
Great coffee table. Clean with a good degreaser, like Dawn, or Murphy's Oil Soap, lightly sand, and use a Gel Stain - easiest product to use. Can't wait for the full tour of the Airbnb. I have really enjoyed those videos. Cheers.
Sweet baby Laurel is doing her best daddy impression. Pictures are wonderful memories, but the wonderful part was being there in that moment in time. At Christmas time it hits especially hard as we wrap ourselves in the memories of those loved ones, who were here in that moment in time. 🎄
You also could, if you don’t have a lot of time, just scuff sand the top, and the rim of the top, and then just paint it. Just clean the rest. It would save you a lot of work and time. Personally I think I would refinish it, but I don’t have any children in my house anymore and a lot of time . Maybe black, dark blue, green? Pick your favorite 😊
For the table, I would clean, sand, and stain the top. Since the legs are tricky to sand the bottom could just be cleaned and painted. You’ll probably want to use a durable sealer on the top especially. Furniture Flipping Teacher on RUclips has some great videos and even some shorts like the “$40 MCM Table Flip” that might help you out. Have fun with it!
I've seen old oak furniture sand blasted. It gives the furniture a beautiful weathered look. I'm seeing a trend for this type of furniture coming over from Europe in antique store that specialize in containers to the USA.
I saw, on the news, that teens are starting to go back to the mall. I was a young person in the 70s and 80s so the mall was where we all worked and gathered. My nearest mall is more than 30 minutes away and i cant remember the laat time i was there. Maybe its time to visit again.
you can rid the yellow by doing a wash of thinned out sheer tan paint..we also added a dry brush of dark gel stain on our yellowed dining table similar to this.. then did the legs in the dark stain..it looks awesome....i could send you a picture of out it turned out if you would like
I refinish furniture as a second job. I think you did fine before except with the sand paper. Use the lower number first like a 60 grit or 80 grit And then go to the higher number like a 120. The higher the number, the more fine the grit becomes. The lower numbers will take off the finish and a higher numbers, like 120 grit and higher, will smooth it down. Personally, I wouldn't waste time on stripping since it's for your air bnb vs. restoring for resell. I'd just sand really well, clean and stain. You got this! It's going to be beautiful!
The round table was perfect. Can’t wait to see it re-finished and in position. I’m so impatient 😂😂😂. Really glad you are taking some time out to be with your lovely family. Thank you for the video , it was fun.
I love the technique of using vinegar, soaked, steel wool and use it for a stain for oak and it looks dynamite. It’s it turns black but you can still grains
Fun to see all the furniture choices .....LOVE the round coffee table....I really like those. good choice. I would use it as is but I hope it turns out well when refinished
I've been watching you for a many of years now. No, sad I'm not subscribed. However I will say, the coloring of your hair is amazing with your eye color. Keep up the good work. Great job with your Airbnb. BEST!!
Why aren’t you subscribed? You do realize it really helps Jocelyn out when you subscribe, right? I feel it’s the least I can do for all the wonderful free content she gives us.
I think my mothers refinishing mix was half varnish and half turpentine, with a little oil paint added for color. Her go to brown was burnt umber. The kind in the little artists tube, doesn't take much. The good thing about this mix is the turp sort of loosens up the previous finish, specially it it was the mix, then the turp evaporates and leaves the varnish, so you can touch up little scratches anytime. Just keep the mix in a sealed container, like a canning jar, or recycled jelly or spaghetti sauce jar. If the finish on your round table is good, you could just try it out. If it works, saves you a lot of work. If not, strip it down, sand it, and then use the mix.
Love your content, really enjoying the Airbnb! I was a professional painter for years to do the table properly I recommend either sanding or using paint stripper( stripper would be best for legs, I like to use Ready Strip brand) definitely use a wood conditioner it makes the stain look even. Then stain with an oil based stain and finish with an oil based polyurethane. It is a nice piece and worth doing correctly. Have fun!
Love the coffee table! Behr makes a product that is a water-based stain & polyurethane in one. I recently used it on a door I stripped. Normally I use a stain & then apply polyurethane, but this product worked well & save some time. I don't believe the stain & poly combo comes in a matte finish, but the satin finish looks nice.
Ashton is really growing up. He’s a handsome young man, and the girls are so beautiful. I remember when my children were their ages fondly, and still enjoy spending time with my forty something children. It is the time of the year to enjoy more family time. Have a wonderful holiday time.
My suggestion for refinishing the table is: Degreasing it - use a fine sanding block for any rough spots - buy a quart of Minwax Polyshades in dark walnut, satin finish with a couple of 2" foam brushes - stir the stain each time you use it as the color setles. I would suggest wearing surgical gloves. Start at the bottom of the table to get feel for the product. Go with the grain. This is a color and finish combined so don't wipe it off. You may need more than one coat. I have done this many times to get out the nasty yellow. This sounds like a lot but it is easy. Good luck.

That's exactly what I would do.
Or do opposite. Paint bottom part a color than sand top and stain it a stain you’d like
@@JeanneMaCh Opposite? She suggested exactly that......top stain, bottom paint.
A satin black paint on the legs/base would be great
Regarding refinishing the coffee table. Yes, get rid of yellow oak. Take the table apart as much as you can to work with smaller areas/pieces. I agree with the lady who mentioned refinishing the top and painting legs would be a nice contrast and a lot easier.
Love the mushroom washboard. Hang it in the Airbnb and put a note on the chalkboard part with the WiFi password on it for your guests or some other type of note.
When you sand wood, follow the grain line (not in circles like you did before). I love the coffee table! Great great choice!
So glad you went to finders keepers. I love back in the day when you went there more often.
Yes I open wonder why she stopped going there
Yes, I’ve missed finders keeper, love the coffee table a really good price!

New place is looking good. I'm glad your FINALLY taking it a bit slower to spend time with family. Time goes by so fast. Your making memories. ❤
I love the round coffee table too good choice.

Yay for Finders Keepers! Those were always my favorite videos! I also vote for painting the base and staining the top.
Yay! Have fun with it. That table is a great choice!
If you have any Habitat For Humanity Restores near you, they are a great source of new and used furniture at thrift store prices 😊
So glad your taking every other day off with your family! You all need that time! Really enjoyed the photos of your family!

Bedside table looked Art Deco Waterfall style. 30's for sure. Love those pieces!

Redo it like you did the sofa table sand and stain the top walnut and paint the legs and bottom black. Easy peasy! 😀
The oval-shaped glass coffee table is stunning!
What amazing finds. Love the local art work . Please Stay Safe Happy and Healthy Have A Wonderful Day
Yay! I am so glad that you came back to “Finder’s Keepers”, because it’s my favorite place!
Which store location was it?
@ Not sure.
Yep I agree with others:-). Gel stain for a darker tone or use chalk paint and wax

Check the process for whitewash top, you can darken or leave ..or paint legs
Love the coffee table
Like the coffee table, can't wait to see it finished!❤
Chalk paint or mineral paint could work on the coffee table, no prep required.
Paint the legs to match the entry table and satin the the color you want maybe the same as the entry table.
I loove when you go to finders keepers!! Such great stuff
Great choice on the table!.The Air B&B is looking amazing!!

The coffee table is great! Sturdy and the size is really good! Do you magic on the color, outstanding piece!
I love the way finders keepers does the price tags. I wish we had something like that here in NY
Ps they had a ton of wood furniture very reasonable too
You can peel of the vener and sand and paint
Real wood it pretty easy to refinish. Sand the crap out of it,stain it and add protective top coat. You can do it ❤
I've been watching you for a many of years now. No, sad I'm not subscribed. However I will say, the coloring of your hair is amazing with your eye color. Keep up the good work. Great job with your Airbnb. BEST!!

Being from the south and living on a farm, the horse mug really excited me!
Round coffee table was nice and price fantastic.
I have seen many people use a green based gel stain it will counter out the yellow/ orange
It’s going to look beautiful Jocelyn ❤
Just paint the table! Take time to refinish it if you ever use it
I love Finders keepers ❤😊

This was such a cool video! Loved it,Jocelyn…from everything a little bit.🙏🏻🥰
Love the coffee table you can do it!!!
Love the round coffee table x
Good luck!
score on the round table! That will soften some of the rectilinear shapes and unite the room!
I love the claw foot table, great price 😊

When our son got his first apartment, we got a claw foot kitchen table and chairs. He had it for many years. So sturdy! I love Finders Keepers!
U can use a gel stain over it
Ashton is really growing up. He’s a handsome young man, and the girls are so beautiful. I remember when my children were their ages fondly, and still enjoy spending time with my forty something children. It is the time of the year to enjoy more family time. Have a wonderful holiday time.

Jell stain works great. You don’t have to remove old stain.
That round coffee table is amazing!!
You can refinish the coffee table with a dark paste wax or even shoe polish. Easy and holds up to regular use.
