Tbh my biggest issue is, how you mentioned, you're creating an island, not living in it. It makes me so upset because I'm not creative enough or have the motivation to make my island a beautiful place, I just want to play, mess around and do chores with friends and villagers in an island that I don't need to worry about making it good but I feel pressured In a way? There's nothing else to do than to decorate your island imo and it sucks..

i feel this. i don't come to Animal Crossing for a creative sim, i come for the social sim, which has been completely excised from the game at this point. i actually really appreciated the sort of limited creativity that New Leaf offered. it challenged you to stretch your creativity as far as it could go using the tools you had, but it still offered a pretty robust experience even if you just kept your town basic. with New Leaf, there was still a fun social sim game within its expanded creative elements. with New Horizons, once you strip away the creative stuff there is nothing underneath.

List of things I want to do:
Collect stuff - Posters, gyroids and Nintendo Items but posters are too tedious and I can’t be bothered to return to my island for the Nintendo items.
Do chores - The villagers ask almost nothing of me 98% of the time.
Talk to the villagers - Yeah, no. I love any villager design but they have the least enthralling dialogue I’ve ever seen.
Live on my island - Am I really? The villagers are the essence of what makes your island special and they’re just there for the sake of being there.

Also, the small tasks the villagers kept asking me to do honestly kept me playing the game, and were what initially pulled me in.

Same, it's crazy to me how they got rid of so many of the Special NPCs that really made the games feel alive, and now it's just nothing.. None of the mail Pelicans, Isabelle's character is whittled down to nothing, getting emotes from Frill/Shrunk was fun, Celeste having her own wing of the Museum, among so many others... never realized how empty the game would feel without so many of them :(

I love the older animal crossings because you could just wander around talking to villagers and catching bugs and fish, it was a calm time.
New Horizons doesn't match my play style at all, despite playing for 80 hours, I never even unlocked terraforming. I wasn't interested in building my town to be a pretty garden or get rich on turnips, I just wanted to chat with my villagers. But I got bored with how my villagers kept saying the same things and also frustrated and jealous with how everyone else's village was so much nicer than mine (even if I actually never put any work into mine). It seemed like everyone online only cared about how your village looked and it was reinforced by how the game's main mechanics all focusing on building your town and making it look pretty.
It made me feel like I was playing the game wrong because my village wasn't aesthetic.
I find myself going back to the older games where you could water your flowers without comparing your village to everyone else's.
One positive thing about new horizons I do want to mention is how much I love the improved clothing and mirror. I loved buying clothes and how you could match outfits together in the mirror without having to put each thing on individually. It was the biggest improvement in the entire game in my opinion. Also, the graphics are good too.
TLDR: I don't want to build my village, I just want to live in it.
And I didn't like how the aesthetics of your village seemed to be the most important thing
But I did really enjoy the fashion improvements to the game.

The game is supposed to have a desert island feel to it, but in order to make your island "better", you have to crowd the outside with decorations, so it feels more like a theme park than just an island.

I really liked the island concept, graphics and the creative freedom. However, at some point it just becomes repetitive. I miss all of the shops and things to unlock and buy. I miss the characters that weren’t villagers (Reese and Cyrus’s shop, Brewster’s, the hairstylist etc.). But most of all, I miss the individual personalities of the villagers. It never felt like lines were recycled with each character and they all felt like individuals. I remember working so hard to bond with Chief (the cranky fox looking villager) and how rewarding it was when he actually became my buddy. I even miss how brutal some characters could be and the feuds. It was great being able to kick out villagers by hitting them with nets and trapping them in pitfalls. The game became too easy, too “nice” and too repetitive. There was almost too much control. There was no depth, it didn’t feel alive.
You explained this all perfectly. I really hope that Nintendo can reboot New Horizons to add more life to it like in previous games.

  • @ErynRollsDice
    @ErynRollsDice 3 года назад +1427

I think the biggest problem for me is the fact that we waited 7 years between New Leaf and New Horizons and now a whole year after the release and there are still things we feel like the game is missing. I don't mind the slow trickle of content. I'm an MMO player, so I'll grind away and get excited about patches every 3 months. But there's no variety and spice in New Horizons. The villagers say the same phrases over and over, there are no tasks given really at all, and things are so slow and clunky. While I loved Animal Crossing in the past for being a slower-styled game, New Horizons has taken it to a whole other level. Bulk buying and crafting should've been introduced by now. Faster options to get online to play with friends are a must. The amount of time I spend trading with other players vs the amount of time going through all the wifi menus and codes and nonsense, it's exhausting. I will concede Nintendo has listened to a few things like giving us more design slots, being able to access the design portal outside of the Able Sisters, and increased house storage. But all of this doesn't change the fact that players are just uninterested. I've been in the middle of redoing my island for months now because I do a little bit and just get so bored. There are no fun additional interactions to have with my villagers, they are literally just ornaments. I've actually gotten to the point where I'm just thinking about letting anyone who asks to move out and just autofill the slots to give myself more variety and surprise. And I agree on the music. I'm someone who will listen to game audio over whatever audio is on my Spotify because I love to enjoy the hard work put into the music in the games. But New Horizons music is dull. I wish there was an option to play old AC music in the game instead just to change it up a little bit. And I find the songs get more and more grating when you end up playing around the same time every day, so you only hear the one or two same songs every time.

My issue was how little there was to do once you built it; and how everything I built was really just a diorama, a facade of the thing. I made this cute outdoor diner; but it was just a fake restaurant. I would rather have a cute downtown with programmed shops and restaurants where I could interact with the villagers there. Plus the furniture options are so limited and I miss all the furniture they had in New Leaf. I think if your favorite thing is to make convincing versions of shops and other places, it's great. But if you actually want to USE the things you make in some way, it just doesn't do it. It was fun for a while though! I don't regret buying it at all

But you'd think for a game released in 2020 where the main feature IS decorating with items, that maybe they could have made them more interactive. I've got bikes nobody can write, a gym nobody can use, an amusement park with rides nobody can sit on... wouldn't it be cool if these items actually did anything?

To be honest, New Horizons just didn't feel like an Animal Crossing game. It feels too much like a sandbox. There's almost too much customization. After you've completed the main goals and expressed yourself fully, the border of the sandbox remains. There's no discovery, there's no new games, and since you don't check daily, you don't look forward to events. The sandbox stays the same without any rain, hail, snow, or anything that could possibly affect your island after years and years. In fact, there's more things to do in Happy Home Designer than in New Horizons, which was a SPIN-OFF. I love that they tried to revive the series, but it's disappointing that I can't enjoy it as much as I did with the other games.

A lot of the features from previous games are still missing! The Nooklings can’t expand their store more than once, so the item selection is still small, Leif and Kicks and Redd can’t create their own stores so if you want what they’re selling you have to wait for them to show back up, the vacation island mini games, villagers can’t come over to your house or play hide and seek with you, and placards in the museum so you don’t have to have the bug/fish/fossil in your inventory to ask Blathers about it (which made me hesitate to bulk donate). Isabelle basically does nothing and is just there because people liked her so much last time. It would be cool if Gracie could come back and make her own store in the upstairs of the Nook Shop or Labelle could have her own designer goods you could buy instead. Katrina isn’t here to tell your fortune, Brewster isn’t here to slowly befriend and make coffee with, Katie and Katherine don’t need reuniting, Blanca doesn’t need a new face, Lyle isn’t here to harass you to buy sketchy insurance, and, while their jobs have been taken by other NPCs or just new mechanics added in the game, I miss Harriet and Dr. Shrunk and Resetti and Tortimer and Pelly and Phyllis and Copper and Booker because their personalities added more color to the game. They made the game feel like a small town populated by people with strong/weird personalities like a lot of real small towns.

ACNH is my first game in the franchise, so I never got to really know the charming life sim aspect that I always hear everyone reminisce about. I can't say that I'd find any joy in having my villagers bully me and be mean to me, something I hear a lot of AC veterans pine for. But I definitely can't stand the dialogue. A lot of my favorite villagers fall in the cranky catagory. As such I have 4 villagers from that archetype on my island and at one point I had 4 lazy villagers. There's SO many times where I'll talk to one villager, they'll give me the same line they give me when I greet them every day, then I'll go talk to another villager and they say the exact same thing. It really breaks the immersion when you have two different characters parroting the exact same 5 lines of dialogue. I'm so sick of hearing about Maglev Mike, bugs in the floor and the names of my villager's abs. Not to mention the absolutely tedious dialogue from some villagers. No joke, Gulliver has like 18 pages of dialogue you have to mash through before you can start his quest. I counted. Not to mention all the times where I mash through Blather's dialogue because I want to assess the fossils, accidentally click "Make a donation" because I was mashing through and then I have to sit through like 7 or 8 more pages of dialogue while Blathers explains to me what all types of donations they accept, even though all my museum sections except the art exhibit are complete. And then it kicks you out of the dialogue instead of giving you the option to reselect whether you want to donate or assess fossils. So you have to go through all that dialogue all over again...
Another thing I really dislike about the game is the fact that it's almost 100% focused on decoration, but there's...very little variety in stuff to decorate with. Nintendo, you aren't fooling me, ok. I've SEEN the item catalog from New Leaf. There are literally hundreds of super cool items in New Leaf that ACNH players would kill to have. ACNH has a tiny amount of furniture sets, a fraction of what NL has, and for some reason, they cut some of the furniture items from the furniture sets that DID get ported over from New Leaf. New Horizons barely has any good indoor furniture, it has a lot of random kitchenware objects but barely anything in the way of tables or shelving. Virtually no counter tops. Can't put rugs outside for some bizarre reason. A lot of the cool landmark items from NL that would be perfect for Gulliver are missing. Barely any food items in the game. None of the cool store furniture like the 7-11 set, cash registers, all the cool cake and bakery display items. Like, all there is to do in ACNH is decorate your island, so I really don't understand why there's such a lack of items to do such with. And why most of the cool items aren't even interactive the way they are in Pocket Camp. That's not even mentioning all the NPCs they removed and all the previous events that they just straight up cut from ACNH for some reason. Would it have been that hard to give us a Valentine's event? St. Partricks? They even removed the Earth Day event that was in ANCH last year!

this 100%!! They needed to figure out what they wanted you to do in the game and make the game less annoying overall
Is the main point to design an island? Then why does changing things on your island take so long in real time. It's like one of those horrible phone games that make things so tedious to force you to buy "gems" to do things faster. Those games are made purposefully annoying this one is just intentionally so?
Is the point of making things "slow" so that it encourages you to make friends in the game and trade with others and see their islands? I can get behind that design. But then why is online literally also the worst experience ever with the constant loading just to get someone to visit?
I even got into finding and making my own designs but there were so few design slots after I made a couple paths with all the corner and edge pieces it was already full.
ALSO: Is the point to make friends with the island characters? Then why couldn't they have at least gave them some unique dialogue instead of their only really being a handful of types that all say the same things...

The grind for items and money in this game is awful in a way no past AC has been. NL had the right feedback loop. Of course you can argue all of the games are just a grind but I think that’s really ignoring the pace at which you would get bells and see new items, not to mention all the old dialogue being better. Redd and Gulliver RNG, printing out tickets, frequently repeating items in the shop, all of those are in NH and noticeably worse than any RNG/grind in the old games. Maybe excluding City Folk but still… I think the DIY recipes themselves, just that one feature, is also significantly worse than any RNG in the old games. The breaking tools are also a form of grind in the sense that you have to continuously collect resources or bells to make or buy them and that’s like a debt you can never pay off. So stupid.

It was crazy how fast it went out of stock especially online. And when the actual game soon released, it got crazier.
However, had we not gotten the extra increase in fan base when the pandemic DID start, and everyone was in lockdown, I don’t think that hype would’ve lasted long. The only reason the hype extended pretty much the rest of 2020 was because of lockdown. All the new fans caught on because they had nothing else to do, and they watched as our community got excited for the game and that inspired them to become a part of our fan base as well.

Like, what if you could buy or find an animal that you had to take care of and doing so rewarded you, and what if the interactions with them had depth? Like Pokémon's Amie? What if you fed and pet and took care of a dog, and it was a fun gameplay experience that rewarded you with the dog helping you look for treasure? Or what if you could work towards buying like a boat to explore the ocean and discover different islands, or what if the scuba gear allowed you to explore deeper under water? AC has a very stagnant progression system. Nothing fun to work towards to enhance the gameplay, mostly because there really isn't any. You just decorate stuff.

I know this is a couple years late but this is just how I felt trying to get into new horizons recently! I can't express myself the way the game wants because I don't have 3 stars, I can't get 3 stars without dumping things around the island, I can't dump stuff around without spending tons of bells and space, and then my island is even less expressive of myself because it's covered in items in places I don't want them looking just bad! And I haven't even gotten to 3 stars because it's not enough trash around the island now. They should've focused on either making self expression more prominent, or having a balanced progression system.
Either focus on a deserted island survival experience with the breakable tools and crafting and (more balanced) rating, or give people a little more freedom in the decorating and don't make them wait weeks minimum without time travel to do one of the main selling points of the game

The game’s been about self-expression since at least Wild World. I read articles at the time that explained it’s success being this very customizable experience. People used to use those 10 design slots to design elaborate skins that would cover 70% of available tiles turning the village into underwater kingdoms and space cities. The problem isn’t that it gives you too much power it’s that it doesn’t feel lived in. I have so many individual problems with New Horizons but has they simply shipped the game with better village dialogue that would have been a massive improvement. In New Leaf I could talk to every villager every day for three weeks before getting a repeat conversation with a personality type. You get the same dialogue multiple times a day from half you villagers now. They don’t ask me to do anything and they’re never anything other than always set and pleased to see me and I stopped talking to them a few months into playing. The game shipped barebones but the thing that hurt the most was losing the spark of life from our animal neighbors

As much as I like the increased level of control over your town/island - getting to choose what villagers move in or out, where they place their houses, where EVERYTHING is placed, no risk of a favorite villager surprise moving one day and no random villager showing up and plopping their house right in the middle of some carefully placed path - it definitely feels... emptier.
The personality types all seem much more the same and restricted in what they talk about. Cranky villagers less cranky, snooty villagers way less snooty, lazy villagers only talk about bugs in their houses. Everyone does what you say all the time and likes you immediately. I genuinely miss when cranky and snooty villagers in particular started out rude and gradually warmed up to you. And as much as it always sucked when a villager you felt like you'd formed a friendship with moved away, it felt more real, like they had lives of their own and could move away just like real life friends sometimes would - and whatever villager would move in next would have their own distinct personality, say things you were more likely to have not heard another villager say previously - I remember some unpopular or underappreciated characters ending up favorites just because I felt like I'd built a friendship with them, now it's all "I want that villager because they look cool" - villagers just feel like another decoration you can put on your 100% customized island.

    - Why are the put up terrain and take down terrain actions, mapped to the same button? Just why.
    - What happened to all the cute outdoor stuff? Fairytale bench etc
    - why is the island smaller than the island in NL?
    - why can't we craft multiple things at once? Why give us annoying DIY stuff, that takes up alllll inventory space, and then also make crafting so mind-numbingly boring?

Although I do miss unlocking new public works projects. I want a reason to collect nook miles and talk with my villagers each day because I feel like I've obtained everything already.
I'm also curious to know what you think about Nintendo's decision to make Nook's Cranny sell you only one color variant of each item? Initially, I didn't like it, but then I felt a sense of joy each time I popped a balloon to find an item color variant that I was missing. And I love that the game introduced dodo codes which has made trading with specific players that much easier (and this has paved the way for things such as Nookazon)

    • @SimpleBean
      @SimpleBean  3 года назад +37

I definitely have mixed feelings on NINTENDO only giving out one color variant. On the one hand it does allow for participating in the community at large BUT you also have to have purchased a Nintendo Online Subscription in order to do so (if I understand correctly) I also wish we got some rotation of items available for “purchase” with the Nook Miles as I think this would be the perfect place to put larger public works-esque items

    • @tikusblue
      @tikusblue 3 года назад +7

Personally I dislike that change they made, I know you can get the other colors via redd and the balloons, but for a game with such an emphasis on decorating I feel like it makes it overly hard to get the right colors of items to be able to decorate how you would want to. Plus, since it's so frustrating it just leads to people using trading instead which creates an imbalance where people who don't have online are left out in another way.

I feel like it was a good thing it didn't go back to that "you're not sure if you belong here" theme with the kind of year we were having. It was a happy escape from what was (and still is) a very scary outside world. It gave you and your friends something to do together without having to be near each other. It gave people a way to be in lockdown or to social distance without having to isolate themselves from social contact.

True the older themes may not have worked so well given the times. And not every previous game reflected those themes as strongly. I thought New Leaf actually did a great job of finding the sweet spot between "Do I belong here?" and the enjoyment of building up your town!

Visiting neighbors use to mean something, collecting bugs, fish, fossils was fun. Making money was tricky but was the core part of the game. It had a nice feel.

You felt like you were actually part of a community that was living on its own, and you had to discover it and adapt to it, also contribute to it, not completely colonise a whole island to your own desire.

2AM is also one of the only hourly themes in the game that I like. It reminds me of the more melancholic night themes of NL, but even then NH 2AM pales in comparison to NL's night themes imo. NL's night themes have a tinge of sadness in them that represent the solitude and serenity of night beautifully (11PM, 1AM, and 4AM being some good examples.) With NH's soundtrack taking a more vacation relaxation vibe to it, I feel like some of that melancholy is lost. 2AM still keeps the piano but with the background music and piano both mostly being played on the major scale with not many sharps, resulting in a more chill sounding song. This is different to the night themes in NL due to the fact that they are mostly done on the major scale with sharps (But I don't know much about music so take what I say with a grain of salt.)

I'd love if there was so much more to explore, like cities with shopping malls, restaurants and attractions, or destinations like mountains, forests, you could go hiking or skiing e.g. You know, as if exploring the world. I wish there were activities you could take part in, like sports, arts, singing, dancing etc. and bond with your villagers that way. I love that kind of simulation in games. I bought the happy home paradise pack hoping there would be so much to explore, turns out there are only 5 facilities you can design and you stop unlocking new features after designing 30 houses which I did in a week lol, the rest is just designing houses in the same places over and over again (which is fun if you enjoy designing, but I do find it repetitive at times) Also having long genuine conversations with villagers would be great, instead of them saying the same thing over again after you have a small chat. It’s hard to verbalize how I feel about this game. I was so, so excited to play this game. I’ve loved this series since Wild World and had 500 hours sunk into New Leaf.
There’s so much I wanted for this game and I don’t like the choices they made for game play. I wish I could just choose color options for items you buy at the shop. I don’t have that many friends who play this game to collect different /colors/. I feel like there’s too many options for customization outside. Designing my island in New Leaf was fun but not my favorite part.
My true loss in New Horizons was the villagers. Their dialogue is not good enough. They don’t have enough options. They never contact you.
At this rate, I can’t remember how I spent hours after school just FISHING in New Leaf. It makes me sad. I miss the animal crossing I loved and spent HOURS of my life on.
The “life going on with or without you” line is something that I really wish this game had. There’s no point to go to my island if I’m gonna be the only one who affects it and I don’t have a new idea.

I really hate it, that you basically HAVE TO play online with friends or strangers… to get the items you like/need. :/ I don’t have a lot friends that play AC nor do I want to use Nookazon to get the items (in the color) that I want… I like playing by myself. And I also feel like there are not enough items in general. I don’t know how I’m supposed to fill my island? With the same furniture over and over again? In the most island tour videos you see the same stuff in a very similar setup (with exceptions of course) every time. I’m playing New Leaf atm and I love it. Why did they remove all the cool buildings? And there are also so many delicious-looking food items in NL. I don’t know where to put all the cool items and I can only place them in my house. 😂 And yeah, the villagers in NL also feel way more alive and unique.

Redd’s release is what broke me. When he came out I was near 75% complete for the museum. Which was great because I was getting to the point where the museum being completed was my final goal.
Although here comes along Redd. I loved the idea of art. But here comes my issue as well. I wanted to complete the art catalogue and fake art because it was funny to have the fakes and real ones.
But here was my breaking point. I got Redd twice. The first forced encounter, and once two weeks after. The whole system of random weekly encounters being restricted to two a week. While having nearly 6 I think at the time to pick from. I never got Redd. This began to crush my inner drive to play.
I began loosing hope of ever completing the museum. I became less involved in the game because at this point I would only check if Redd had appeared on the island. But he never did. For a whole two month. This was the breaking point for me because I had nothing else to do. This was also when I eventually just bought New Leaf. I started acnh back in May of 2020 and I still play it til this day, but the game feels like it's lacking so much. I want to hear new things from my villagers not the same exact thing every day. I love peppy villagers and have 2 on my island looking for a 3rd but they're so bland. I get no enjoyment out of them. I just use them for their looks, house design, and that's just about it. They don't mean anything to me. The oldest game of ac I played was new leaf so I'm not a long time player, but new leaf was so much more fun than acnh. I do enjoy being able to decorate outdoors and having some amazing custom designs that other players have made, but even with being able to design outdoors and move buildings etc, I get tired of it quickly. The amount of time terraforming takes kinda annoys me, and having to continously upgrade your house so you can fit more items in your storage sucks. I get tired of fishing and bug catching fast and have no motivation to save all of that money towards my house which I only go into for items in my storage. I only got a few dozen hours into new leaf before leaving it for good, but I had so much fun playing it even if I only spent about 20 minutes on it a day. I miss how your villagers would ask if you could come to their house and play. It felt as if my villagers were real people who wanted to spend time with me, not soulless creatures that walk around my island doing nothing. I do hope the devs of acnh add more things for us players to do.

another thing about having only one save slot is any player after the first one gets to literally do nothing. what about people who can't afford another switch? some people like to either share an island or have one of their own, but they can't make that choice.

makes them less money so they have less motivation to do it. i do think there's probably an actual design reason that this isn't possible with the current version of the game, the sheer lag just from one island if it's got too many items out is a strong indicator that it wouldn't handle more than one island very well. but that's not because it's impossible period, they just don't want to put in the optimization effort when they can actually make money by strongarming people into buying individual devices. feels really absurd for my partner and i to each have our own console instead of sharing one, so i just have to deal with sharing it.

I ended up returning to New Leaf... Even without the island customisation, it has a lot of things Nee Horizon lacks.. and as I never finished making my house bigger, I thing its a new challenge (plus there I CAN GET ZELDA STUFF AND ZELDA VILLAGERS)

I don't even care about bulk crafting. I just want more villager dialogue.. I want THEM to give me tasks.

The Nook Phone is probably by far the worst design decision in the game. Way to rip out so much villager interaction
