4 years later this video is still very helpful. After watching this video I looked for the Franklin (known as Bauer today) and it was on clearance sale for $79.99! I was able to secure the last one in my area. It's a very good product and has helped me to hold wood in place to plane. Thanks for taking the time to do this review.
Originally designed and manufactured in Australia by Triton 30 years ago. Triton is an Australian Owned company. These that you are showing are copies of the original Triton "Super Jaws"
I was able to use a 25% coupon for mine in Middletown, NY this last weekend. The electronic register would not accept it but the manager entered it for me manually. This tool is a joy to use.
I picked up one of these last week. Upon trying to set it up, both spring pins in the 3rd leg lever locks broke and fell in multiple pieces. I had to find alternative pins to put in them. But, as a welder and fabricator, I used this on a job site to hold metal while I cut it. It worked fantastic! I should have bought a version of this earlier, but I couldn't pass up the $99 sale price on this one.
Everyone of your criticisms of the Jaw Horse is valid. I have two of them and yes they were on sale, close out, clearance, or whatever you want to call it. The roller is useless. I end up carrying it by the third leg. I also would be happier if they folded up into a smaller package. I've also had that third leg pop out while carrying it and dropped them. Looks like HF has another winner product that seems to come along to late to do me any good.
I am a big fan of the Rockwell Sheetmaster version of this (I have 2 of them) but I agree about the lock on the third leg and wheels though where they are usable, it does work well but an off road wheel attachment kit would be nice for either. It would also be nice if Harbor Freight introduced some of the accessories that Rockwell discontinued (hint hint... Share these thoughts with your product development contacts). As for the stirrup feet, try having your cub stand in one for some additional support (it is generally on the wrong side to do it yourself) or put a 2x3 (I think that fits) through it and another board across that down to where you work and step on that. You showed that the jaw slides fit but can you confirm that it does function? I may be letting a cat out of the bag but if so, before introducing the Sheetmaster Rockwell used to make a longer jaw slide that would accomidate a sheet of plywood, so may do the same for this unit. Triton has some some similar accessories but also some other more workstation type ones. I do not think that the workstation type accessories would transfer to this unit based on how theirs work but I think that they are gimmicky anyway. That being said, I could see Harbor Freight offering the support bracket that comes with the Sheetmaster to make a sheet of plywood become a work surface with the help of a 2x4. I think Harbor Freight introducing this sort of tool shows that they can be a game changer even I do think they are a little late on this one (my guess is that there may have been patent or licensing issues otherwise we should have seen more of these a long time ago ignoring the fact that Worx discontinued thiers). Hopefully as with others, this will challenge others to improve their products or lower thier price without cheapening the product since I think Harboe Freight offering this could enlarge and squeeze the market on these devices.
25% Coupon is still good this weekend. Some people have reported that they are not accepting this coupon and yet others have said they did use it. If you can find a link to a coupon that excluded Franklin please link it here.
The in store coupon $5 off over 50, expires tomorrow. Code 65102460. With the Franklin coupon at $100 should at least get for it for $95, if a manager won't accept the 25% off.
It didn't work for me and I politely told the manager the coupon didn't exclude Franklin but she said the computer won't take it. She finally gave me 20% off.
I went to Harbor Freight last week to get one, it's on clearance for $79, I had to go to 5 locations before I found one in stock. It's the best little helper when you're alone doing odds and ends around the house.
just looked online. under description they have it listed as Bauer even though the product pic still shows Franklin. I'm guessing to get around the coupon issue so you can't "officially" get 20-25% off.
I have 6 of them because I use them for clamping-gluing up flat work like bench tops. I was able to get 2 of them on clearance for $25 bucks a piece or I would not have 6 of them. However when I use them I find I need them all when doing a lot of glueing up. The harbor freight ones should be cheaper though. the other 4 I found on line for $99 and free shipping.
Picked up the Franklin Workstation yesterday. I used the 25% off coupon. The register rejected the coupon for that purchase but the cashier over-road the register and I got it for $89. I had the $99 coupon in the back pocket just encase. The cashier said someone else purchased the workstation before me with the 25% super coupon earlier in the day.
I have had a Rockwell for about 15 years and have never tripped over one of the feet. I have always found the round dial lock to be more than adequate, all it does is secure the one leg either closed or open. The leg cannot extend or collapse even with the dial lock not tightened. My clamp has never come close to sliding off the end of the tool. Mine might if I tilted it up into a position that you couldn't use it anyway. The Franklin may be just as good and if so then it is a good tool. If it is better, then it is a superb tool. I think the Jawhorse ..................or something like it is nearly a must have.
I agree, I have had my Rockwell for about 10 years and never had any problems with it. Works great for my needs. I am sure the Franklin is a great tool, but until my Rockwell fails in some manner, I do not see the need to replace it.
I bought one of the first Jaw Horses sold when they hit the store. I've used it thousands of times and never tripped over it, never had the plate "slide off" never had anything break, loosen, or not work flawlessly. The large looped feet are fantastic on soft ground, and offer an even wider stance. If you haven't figure out why the locking lever has that big foot loop, then you've clearly never been on a job where there's mud and snow, and had the joy of having your foot slide off of something like this and gouge your leg. there's no tinker toy little latches and flippers to break to lock in those cheap looking foot pads on the Franklin, and I sincerely doubt it will last a fraction of the time My Rockwell has without breaking.
I would buy the Franklin if I needed a new jawhorse. I have the Rockwell and agree the feet look stupid but I have never tripped on them. The Rockwell wheel works great for me but I use it on uneven concrete and driveways both good and crappy. Over grass and debris I just carry it.
I'm going to go grab a franklin today because its covered by the coupon. I can get two for 2/3 the price of a Rockwell. For me it's a no-brainer! Thanks for the heads up. Great vid!
Been watching your videos for 2 years now, built more then half of my tool collection with your advice and I just scored 2 Rockwell jawhorse rk9003 $150 for 2 of them from a lady on Facebook, I think they belonged to her husband who’s not around, I have 4 saw horses already but I’ll use the jaw-horse for building things and the saw horses for stacking lumber for jobs
I had a hard time buying this.First they couldn't find them and computer said they had three. They didn't want to take 25%coupon but manager finally approved it.Menifee California
This looks identical to the Ridgid version which Home Depot occasionally brings out for BF/Xmas. I like the stabilizer foot pad on the back fold down leg better than the Rockwell version (which is just a stub).
The Franklin Hands-Free Portable Workstation is on 'Clearance' for $145.97. Here is Bear talking about how in 2019 these could be purchased for $89. COVID inflation is real
Thank you for posting, Bear! I purchased mine with the 25% coupon (had to fight for it) and I haven’t used it yet because I was hoping you’d do a video soon on it. I’m sold now and can’t wait to use it. Thank you again and keep the amazing content coming!
I bought one and used it last week. It held a piece of plywood that was just shy of 36 in wide, and it really gripped it. First time to try one of these, and I'm really satisfied.
The jawhorse type clamp is one of the most used tools in my garage. They allow you to hold a work piece is a variety of positions. The clamping force on these things is unreal. Once you lock something in, it’s not going anywhere. I do agree on the wheel (roller). I’d like to se a redesign that allowed it to be more functional for transportation. Bear is correct on the weight. Lugging this around is not easy for a smaller person. It has to have sufficient weight in order to not tip over during use. At $100, the Franklin is a STEAL.
I have the Triton SJA300XL it was bought for £140, in American thats maybe 180USD but it is an absolute beast, a fantastic upgrade from any black n decker clamp bench, it's the same features as the franklin/rockwell they all seem to be very similar, 1 tonnne/2200lbs clamp pressure etc portable, folds up nice as mentioned, great for little jobs at home or commercial building site, you can make an instant table out of it with sheet material, even use it for steadying a fence/gate post, its a good investment for DIY and tough enough for building site with all steel parts. A travelling carpenter would really appreciate it
Wow, that looks almost identical to the Rockwell. I can see a few differences like the feet. You're about my size, I don't think you need much leverage when you push down on that pedal with your foot 😆 Frankly, I think you could take the jaw off the Franklin and put it right on the Rockwell and it would work just fine. The cross-section, the hole pattern those look exactly the same. There are some minor differences in the pattern of slots on the top.
Wow, great comparison. Just found it for $99 on the coupon database. (the list price has gone from $119 to $129 since this review). By the way, I'd never heard of the Harbor Freight Coupon Database before. Thanks! I'm probably going to go broke saving money now.
Good review there Bear. I'm curious if this Franklin has the same jaw capacity as the Rockwell original at 37" ? Rockwell also makes the Sheetmaster version with a jaw capacity of 49". As far as price point is concerned, the Rockwell standard Jawhorse is at my Lowe's for $149.99 with no discount. If I can locate one of those 25% off coupons for the Franklin it would save me a bunch of money and cover the price of my gas to and from the local HF and back. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
@@denoftools I might wait for that one then. I assyoumead that this would do full sheets. That's a little disappointing but its it's still a good deal for the price.
Serious note here from another big grizzly - do your legs hurt and swell where the red discoloration (venous stasis) is located? While it may look dorky, you may want to talk to a doctor about compression stockings to alleviate the pressure and swelling. Mine looked like that and I didn’t wear my stockings. Now I’m looking forward to 10 procedures to either have microphlebectomies and or laser ablations to fix the veins in my legs. Had the 1st procedure on Friday and had 22 veins cut out of my upper leg - not really painful as much as it is sore 4 days later. Go ask the doc...you don’t want to have it come to the point where you can’t walk and your legs hurt all the time and swell and leak. When one of those veins gets to the skin and breaks through and you knick it, it bleeds a LOT and it requires 15 mins of constant pressure to get it to clot up while the leg is elevated. Not easy to do with an ample abdomen. 😉
I've had a Jawhorse for many years and absolutely love it. But I curse that rear leg knob and trip over those stupid feet every time I use it! I'm glad HF decided to make necessary improvements on a classic. Great video!
Just got back from HF I used a 25% off I was prepared before going with a larger print out of the 25% off coupon with exclusions listed to show cashier. Franklin is not excluded manger had no problem over riding discount. The box has Franklin all over it that it is shipped in. The IBM cash register pulls it up as a Bauer. Better Hurry up and buy. Great price after the 25% off for $89.99
In my experience stuff like this with wheels sucks. It would be cool with a place to put hitch pins for more stable leg holding, and a place to hang it up on a garage wall for storage. I like it though.
The first time I saw one of these was on April Wilkerson's channel. A friend of mine got the Rockler and I was at a Triton demo and had my hands on theirs. I was planning on getting a Triton the week the HFT one got leaked. So I figured I'll just wait longer. I'm thinking it's worth the weight and it will be mine.
HF wouldn't take the 25% coupon. I was angry. I ended up using the 99.99 coupon to get it. I'm still pissed about it. I tried fighting but they wouldn't budge
The stirrup foot on the Rockwell is to step into with your own foot for leverage if the jawhorse leg lifts up with top heavy work load. Flat feet are OK but they don't have the security of a stirrup because they aren't very wide for a foot.
I just missed the deal you were explaining in the video figures that would happen I did manage to use a 20% and the $10 off a $100 coupons together to get out the door at $109.99 now I know at the next parking lot sale I'll find one for $40 because of course I don't need it but I definitely like being able to lock something in place while I'm working I put a HF magnetic attachment on the front end of mine to hold my Bear approved refreshment always great reviews and I definitely have bought a few items strictly based on your recommendations the world is a much better place thanks to our Friendly Neighborhood Tool Bear
The green Franklins are more compact than this red one. I've had the green ones before & they'll fold up nicely & I have even slipped one in my pocket. They don't have much clamping force & in the presence of a spouse they can be very difficult to hold on to. Jeff, maybe you could do a Franklin to Franklin comparison video.
I may be "Old School" but I prefer a couple of homemade sawhorses (around $20) over these. I would not turn them away if they were given to me but I would not but one on my own... Thanks for the review Bear !!
Hey Bear just a heads up........ I just bought the Franklin workstation and that 25% off coupon won’t work with Franklin.....cashier even showed me on her computer. Thanks Bear!
The Den of Tools she said because the Franklin is so new. They just put out the floor model today and I bought the first one. She said Franklin will be added some time in the near future.....which sucks but I was able to use a coupon and pay $99 so it’s better than nothing I’m looking forward to using it!
@@treebossmike8818 I'd go back and talk to a manager. If it's not on the coupon and a retraction isn't posted at the store, a manager can override the price. Quite frankly I can't see them suddenly putting a blanket exclusion on Franklin. I had that fight once on the smaller edge guide. When corporate put it in their system they forgot to check a box.
@@victorserhumano yes when it first came out. There's still coupons on ocassion. You can use a 20% on it. Come on by my channel. I do 2 coupon videos a month. If one comes out for this again it will be talked about for sure.
I bought the HF Bauer Clamping Workstation on sale for $99 March of 2023. Absolutely loved until it broke after 10 hours of use! Top sliding clamp piece bent out of shape and would no longer clamp down on the wood. Must be really poor-quality metal. I called tech support, but HF does not support this Bauer Workstation with replacement parts. Current price for HF Bauer workstation is $149 with a limited 90 day warranty. Home Depot sells the Rockwell Jawhorse for $239 but it has a 5 year warranty. I expected a much longer life out of the HF Bauer workstation. Just glad it broke within the 90 day return period. Given the failure of my Bauer workstation, I cannot recommend it. I might replace it with the Rockwell just for the 5 year warranty. I'm all for saving money, but my tools need to last. I only got 10 hours out of the HF Bauer workstation before it bent out of shape and no longer clamps tight.
@Paul Russell - even at $99, you got one heck of a deal. I have the original Rockwell version, and absolutely love it. The Franklin looks every bit as stout and functional. You won’t regret your purchase.
Anyone notice the new super coupon for the single us general 26” tool chest bottom is now 299 the old regular price hinting at the new 319 price hike. Tariffs like the bear said also the Hercules table saw coupon is for 349 . This months coupon that expires on the 31st is for 279. Better get those now folks
THANK YOU, I'm glad you made this video...I didn't know Harbor Freight made one of these....I've almost purchased that Rockwell several times at Lowe's (for when I cut and thread conduit on the jobsite) but kept putting it off and never actually buying it. No Kidding, I've probably looked at that Rockwell at least 25 times but never bought it. ...I have an old Ridgid Tripod vise (expensive when it was new) already but I've had it since the late 1990's, and it's age is showing, not to mention it's bulky and heavy to carry and at 48 years of age, I'm just not as young as I used to be and have been looking at the Rockwell as a lighter weight easier to lug around replacement..........BUT, after seeing this video, It looks like I will definately be paying Harbor Freight a visit next payday (I've was already planning a trip to H.Freight anyway to reload on rolls of electrical tape)
🐻 thank you for the review... I have been looking at. This tool.... And hey yes I would like to get this with a super coupon.... Bear have you ever looked at the pole vise or blacksmith vise I'm getting ready to get one... I wish hf would manufacturer one for sale
Another great review bear. I will have look at the franklin next time in hf. The bear got scooped last friday by tony the technician on the quinn sockets being the same as pittsburgh but more bucks. Bear you cannot get all the news in hf but you ard the king bear for hf reviews. Good work bear keep the reviews coming.
Thanks for the info Bear! I tried to purchase one today and was told that the 25% off coupon would not work! No reason other than "the computer won't let it, and I can't override anything." There was no manager to argue with....
I wonder if HF will be adding accessories?I have a Jawhorse, but the accessories cost as much or more than the base HF unit. And I agree about tripping over the foot loop on the Jawhorse. As such, it's hard to leave the unit in place as a workstation.
HF has pumped the price up to $150 with no current coupon other than the 20%, But you can get the Rockwell for ~$90 on clearance at Lowes through 01/15/2020.
Ringing up as Bauer at my local store when using the 25% coupon. I told the clerk that the brand is Franklin and after validation the clerk manually entered the 25% off. Thanks for the heads up Bear!

The bear got his hands on the HF jaw horse? Its like Christmas in July!! Thanks for the review!!!
Indeed, I've been holding off on this in hopes of a review
I've had a Jawhorse for many years and absolutely love it. But I curse that rear leg knob and trip over those stupid feet every time I use it! I'm glad HF decided to make necessary improvements on a classic. Great video!
It uses a slot, you have to use the slot, or it will mislead you.
I bought one from Sears under the Craftsman label years ago. Haven't seen it at Sears in a long time. Works great.
How about a review of the new Herc Blower? It's in the newest sales flyer!
I didn't know they existed until I saw April's either. I knew I had to have one at that point. The price was holding me back though.
4:10 thought for sure you were going to give your best "HIYAH!!!"
That's cool you can put the Franklin jaw on the Rockwell
HF wouldn't take the 25% coupon. I was angry. I ended up using the 99.99 coupon to get it. I'm still pissed about it. I tried fighting but they wouldn't budge
use the jawhorse for years love it
The stirrup foot on the Rockwell is to step into with your own foot for leverage if the jawhorse leg lifts up with top heavy work load.
I like the feet on the Franklin better then the rockwell
When this thing first popped up it looked like identical to the first gen jaw horse. I was kinda surprised
Thanks for the tip about Franklin not being a listed 20% exclusion.
Did Harbor Freight discontinue this equipment?
I may be "Old School" but I prefer a couple of homemade sawhorses (around $20) over these. I would not turn them away if they were given to me but I would not but one on my own... Thanks for the review Bear !!
40 years in the trade Richard. Not the same as a sawhorse.Wish I had this back in the day.
Hopefully the Herc Circ saw is still coming, shown at 1:40 in the photo.
That Franklin is now $180! Wow...
HOLY COW-YOU REALLY ARE A BIG BEAR!!! ...LOVE YA LOT'S & YOUR INFORMATIONAL VIDEOS TOO!!! 👍😁
Hey Bear just a heads up........ I just bought the Franklin workstation and that 25% off coupon won’t work with Franklin.....cashier even showed me on her computer. Thanks Bear!
Did they say why? It's not listed on the coupon.
Bear I remember when Craftsman came out with one I hope Stanley black and Decker brings it back eaven back under the Craftsman name
Make more vids like this! Some hands on stuff.
The stirrup foot doubles as a handle.
At $89 it’s being considered. At $70 it would be bought.
not bad for 129
@@victorserhumano yes when it first came out. There's still coupons on ocassion. You can use a 20% on it. Come on by my channel. I do 2 coupon videos a month. If one comes out for this again it will be talked about for sure.
still using theB&D workmate, awesome tool
Good luck finding one in a store. All they get is a display model.
Everyone check your Lowes! The Rockwell one is on sale for $72 right now with a very limited stock. Or at least it is at my area in Ohio!
I just bought one this morning in Fort Wayne, IN. and they wouldn't accept the 25% coupon. I used the $99.99 coupon.
@Paul Russell - even at $99, you got one heck of a deal. I have the original Rockwell version, and absolutely love it. The Franklin looks every bit as stout and functional. You won’t regret your purchase.
Great review Red
Anyone notice the new super coupon for the single us general 26” tool chest bottom is now 299 the old regular price hinting at the new 319 price hike. Tariffs like the bear said also the Hercules table saw coupon is for 349 . This months coupon that expires on the 31st is for 279. Better get those now folks
Coupon codes are 70417119 for the 279 Hercules and 65893947 for the single bank bottom chest for 279 as well.
I just bought a Baur version of this today - lol
Another great review bear. I will have look at the franklin next time in hf. The bear got scooped last friday by tony the technician on the quinn sockets being the same as pittsburgh but more bucks. Bear you cannot get all the news in hf but you ard the king bear for hf reviews. Good work bear keep the reviews coming.
Great video ! Exactly what I needed to know.
Thanks for the info Bear! I tried to purchase one today and was told that the 25% off coupon would not work! No reason other than "the computer won't let it, and I can't override anything." There was no manager to argue with....
Thanks Red, great review
I wonder if HF will be adding accessories?I have a Jawhorse, but the accessories cost as much or more than the base HF unit. And I agree about tripping over the foot loop on the Jawhorse. As such, it's hard to leave the unit in place as a workstation.
Love the Jaw horse curl.
Mr.Bear. D you think having 2 of them is worth it?
Yes! Ever since I got the first one I could not wait to pickup a second one.
Great video red
Great video, thanks. Is there any breakable plastic beside the non-marring material on the jaws?
My local HF would NOT honor the 25 percent coupon. Tucson, Az by the way.
I had one of the older jawhorse and the thing was to heavy and odd to keep around.
At Harbor Freight web site 149.99 - @ Amazon for 99.99
I think you’ve got me convinced I’m going to get one tomorrow. Looks great
Anyone have a coupon code or know when it may go on sale for the 10 gallon central pneumatic air compressor ? Thank in advance
There's been a coupon for it for $125 every 1-3 months for past couple years. None right now that I see.
Thank you for that review!
Bear! - H.F. just put these on "Clearance" (March 2022) @ "only" $179.97!! - - And as you know, there are NO COUPONS to be had for this!! OUCH!!!
4:18 Was that a Bear fart?
NICE
What timing that was huh?
Lol. That big guy in video is in strongman competition
I remember Craftsman use to have them for a while they were about $99.00
Love the new closing, brother Bear.
You can get the Bauer right now for $99.00
Nice, I need to get one!
The big guy should have sat on each one to see if it would hold the weight.
Has anyone bought this thing with the coupon, and know it works?
I've had responses that several people did some people didn't have to argue lately with the store manager
