- Hey! Look who finished a thing!
I'm in college full-time now, so I'm not going to declare myself "returned," but I do hope to be making things when I have the time and energy. As it is, this one's not very long and fairly simple--but I consider it a minor miracle that it exists at all, so I'll take what I can get. I think it took me about three weeks in total, cause I started storyboarding right after the prison break stream. Actually, what happened is I was watching the stream and doing my homework, just chilling. And then some of the frame compositions flashed into vision and became seared in my mind. And I sat there like, "Shoot. I'm gonna have to make this now, aren't I?"
Also: This project might not stack up so well with the others, but I made it for the pure joy of bringing it to completion. If at least one other person is also excited about it, then I guess I did what I came here to do.

Oh my gosh. I love this song so much. Second to Innocence, it's probably my favorite that I've ever used. I probably listened to this song daily while working on Innocence, actually, so it's a nice little tribute for me. And WOW I love Vancouver Sleep Clinic. I've had a passing interest since I heard "Closure" in like 2018, but man I have been loving their stuff lately. "The Wire"??? Wow. Now that's a song.
Anyways, I could clearly rant about this all day. Let's move on.

Okay. Time for a keyword salad. I don't think this actually matters (and my analytics are already gonna be destroyed by how long I've been gone), but it's funny!
In this funny little Dream SMP Animatic, there is Lore and Drama. The Drama is entirely limited to Minecraft Game Mechanics, so a lot of things are completely left to artistic licensing. For example, the Character Designs are based on Minecraft Skins that cant have more than 500 Pixels. Speaking of Characters, there are so many of your favorite Dream SMP characters, like Technoblade. Why is he wearing a blindfold? We may never know. There is also a Dream. There are a few Dreams actually, he's on more than one panel. Imagine that. There's also Quackity, just one though. Dream and Technoblade are in Prison, and then later they are not. The Prison is called Pandora's Vault, in case you're wondering. TommyInnit is also in this Animatic. But only about half of it. There is also a lot of Running. So much Running. But I bet you could tell that from the title. Lastly, your other favorite characters make an appearance as well, including Ranboo, Philza (Ph1lza) Minecraft, and "Sam" Awesamdude. Wow. What a great cast.
One more thing: I want to say thanks to E & A for keeping me grounded these past few months. I doubt they'll read this, but it's the thought that counts. I owe them a lot.

Ok the flashes while Tommy’s running from Dream being a reference to shattered (aka the scenes pertaining to Tommy’s death) was INCREDIBLE. I love that the fandom has taken that blooper and ran with it as Tommy’s biggest fear and what he sees is gonna happen.

Honestly I think the frame at 2:45 where Sam pulls out his sword to kill Ranboo is really overlooked. The fact that the sword is entirely red, unlike how Techno and Dream were in the last frame beforehand. Shows that no matter who’s view is being looked in the eyes on, everyone agrees that Sams action of killing Ranboo was wrong, for he hadn’t done anything to warrant being killed for.
In Late's animations, red means evil. And usually when an SMP character does a bad thing, they are coloured red. But here, Sam's sword is red, but Sam isn't. That's an interesting way for Late to show their opinion about Ranboo's death. It wasn't a good thing, but the one who did it isn't considered evil in this scene. Interesting.
@@CJ55981 I think it's also interesting to see that Techno doesn't turn red until we see Tommy, which shows that Techno's evil is only considered evil in relation to how it effects Tommy. But overall the action of breaking Dream out to repay his debt and helping Ranboo is not evil in itself. Its only evil when you consider how it will hurt Tommy in the long run.

Yes this is amazing
omg, I love this frame at 2:45 , where Techno and Dream aren't fully in red, but Dream has much more red on him than Techno. Someone mentioned that they seem to only be red when someone around them views them as evil, or they are doing something evil in that moment. So if you consider that, and the fact that you can see Dream running away here, and Dream saying he wouldn't come back to save Ranboo, then you can kind of get the symbolism here. In that moment, Techno did come back to save Ranboo, while Dream would not. So even though in everyone elses' eyes, both Techno and Dream were "bad", but they did see Techno try to save Ranboo- and Dream running away, meaning that they'd see Techno as less evil than Dream. (and yes, this could be Tommy's view as well)
although this is just one way to interpret this- there's several other ways I've already came up with lol ^^'

Personally, to me it feels that Tommy is one of the main protagonists in Finn's animatics. As Techno and Dream are coming out of the water from outside of the prison, Tom watches on from the hill. The frame where Techno is in front of Dream and Ranboo, the only one who isn't red is Ranboo. Tom said before that he had forgiven Techno, so in Tommy's eyes, this could be him believing that Techno is still a bad man, fighting with Dream, against him, but as Dream leaves his side, unwilling to stay to keep Ranboo alive, the red leaves Techno, possibly showing Tommy that really, Techno isn't here just for Dream or siding with him, shown as he stays where he is for Ranboo. But yes, this could just be the view of the general public of the SMP too though.

it has been said before that the red has protained to tommy's prespective of a situation, although the red can symbolize someone partaking in an evil act in the momment.
Thought of it more as dreams evil rubbing off on techno blade
Watching this after techno’s passing feels really depressing.

I find it SO interesting how the red faded from Techno after Ranboo was killed. Almost like his rage/will drained out of him as he saw it happen? Sam was grey except for his sword which was bright red, which could show how the action of taking Ranboo hostage and killing him was out of his duty as Warden, not his true emotions. And Dream is just red throughout like always. So cool :D

The line "give you something to take away the pain" over Tommy looking away from Wilbur there sent a jolt through my heart
The Dream SMP was one of the things that really got me through quarantine. Without it, I don't know where I'd be.
Looking back on these animations now is so incredibly bittersweet, as one relives a time where everything was so unsure and scary all over the world, but we looked to Minecraft streamers for comfort - and that they did provide. We sought shelter in the elaborate fiction and lore and community to hide from all that we couldn't control. It was a safe place in a world where going outside was putting your life at risk.
So much has changed since then. I will miss the days of the Dream SMP. I will miss the days of scrolling through animations after watching every canon stream. I will miss the days of watching through all of the artistic interpretations of the story arcs instead of paying attention during virtual classes. I will miss the days of talking endlessly with my friends about our favorite streamers and doodling the dramatic action scenes on my homework.
I can't believe it has been three years. It hurts to move on.

It still hurts. I don't think about it often, but sometimes I do, and I'll sit and think for a moment about just how profound all of this was - everything from the streamers to the acting to the lore to the animatics to the fan theories and 3am discussions with friends about what we think will happen. It was incredible, all of it, and it simply ceasing to exist feels like quite the loss. I haven't even seen any new animatics or anything, or heard any mention of it past the Season 2 discussions; it's as if it has been well and truly left behind.

as someone who has absolutely no context of the Dream SMP and just hears about the fandom from third hand this video was really beautiful. and sad, i’m sorry about whatever happened to these friends.
It's pretty complicated, but basically the guy with the mask was locked up for harassing the kid in the thumbnail, and then he escapes prison and, for revenge, is now tormenting the kid best he can again. The blindfolded guy owed the masked guy a favor, so he helped break him out of prison, even if he doesn't like his abhorrent behavior.

The blood God (the blindfolded guy) is freed from prison by his friend (the one with wings) and goes back to save someone he owed a favor to (the guy with the mask) who tortured the son of the winged man who's named Tommy (the one with the red and white shirt)

Hi, I know you moved on, and I am grateful you left us these pieces of art. I hope wherever you are and whatever you are doing is going in your favour. I still fondly remember when they came out how cool it was and how in awe I still am. I return from time to time simply to marvel at the composition and animation. Best of luck!
Yooo that subtle nudge at 0:36 just emotionally stabbed me. It's just genious! You can say so much about the scene through just a seemingly small action like that. Instantly made me think of my brothers and I ended up getting all emotional.

I love how when the lyrics "you are my only way out" is when Techno is giving Dream tools and freeing him.
Plus during that scene, you can see one of dreams fingers is missing, because of his constant torture.

A summary of Techno’s philosophy, for freeing Dream.
This is gonna sound oddly specific, but man you are good at drawing bodies. They head is always proportionate to the body and everything looks real as if there is layers of bone, muscle, tendons, and skin underneath it. Many artists never achieve that, but you did! I especially like this pose at 3:15, it feels very natural.
I pretty much already forgot about the dreamsmp and everything that’s ever happened. But when I saw this on my recommendations I couldn’t help but click instantly because I remembered how beautiful your works were, and I’m sure this one is the same

Honestly, to me, nothings the same without techno
stunning... just absolutely stunning. Your painting always makes me catch my breath- it's so expressive and just downright beautiful.
I love how at 0:29 Wilbur nudges Tommy and he smiles but then he frowns and turns away and it pans over to Dream while Wilbur looks kinda confused. In my opinion, it kinda shows that Tommy still cares for Wil, but he turns away because knows he can't trust him because of his blind loyalty to Dream. But, Wil doesn't understand that because he doesn't see Dream as the bad guy so he doesn't know why Tommy won't trust him.
Plus the lyrics during that scene- "And I know you think that we're done for. If you let me, I'll bring you comfort, give you something to take away the pain. There is no other way now." That shows that Wilbur knows Tommy already has low expectations for him and their relationship because of all the stuff that happened before Phil killed him, but he still genuinely wants to help him out. But then it pans to Dream when it says "There is no other way now" signifying that Tommy knows that Dream still has a hold on him because the only way they can have an actual relationship is if Wilbur somehow stopped following Dream, otherwise he'd give him up in a heartbeat if Dream were to call in his favor.
That scene could mean something totally different or just not be that deep, but that's just how I see it and I absolutely love it.
I like how Techno being evil(red) in Tommy's eyes faded away after he noticed that Techno got Ranboo out of prison. It's at the moment where Dream wanted to flee and Techno wanted to save Ranboo from Sam. That's when Techno changed again in Tommy's vision.
Love frame 2:43 where dream is looking away from them while techno just stopped in his tracks looking back.
Thank you Late-August for your animatics…your art has always connected to me in ways no other media has. They bring me a variety of emotions, peace, reminiscence, joy, sadness, but most of all inspiration. Your choices of music, style, scenery, and color lull me. I always come back here. 3:03 being a referance to the Shatter animatic is so cool I cannot get over the visual symbolisms especially the things in red throughout each one. Late August, sir, you have created visual masterpieces for this fandom and I can't wait to see the works you put forth in the future
This is beautiful wow. Something about how you have *mostly* still images makes the parts that you animate fluidly so important, like the little nudge that Wilbur gives Tommy at the beginning. I loved the action shots of Techno and Dream, I loved Tommy’s look of determination. This is wonderful.

Absolutely incredible work! I'm not sure how intentional this is, but seeing Phil (the character the fandom has given the title Angel of Death) reaching out towards Ranboo-not in sadness, but as if Ranboo should take his hand-as he was killed was such an awesome detail.

that dream being red thing is symbolism that is totally gonna be used in a later animatic
