Desiree, you are a gem 💎, I've needed to sharpen my paper trimmer for so long it's embarrassing, there's a project I do for the ministry that I dread because a dull trimmer is time consuming. Many thanks for the advice.
Fantastic thank you so much for sharing this idea. I go through cutting blades once a month so this is going to help me save money and the cardstock will look more professional. ❤
I've had my paper cutter for 15 years. It's amazing and they don't sell this kind anymore. But it's really dull now and I can't afford a new one. I couldn't find a place where they could sharpen the blade. Thank you so much for this video!! So simple and affordable. Can't wait to start scrapbooking again! Thanks Desiree!
I was shown how to sharpen household scissors (which seems to work pretty well), by "cutting" the edge of a drinking glass or glass jar. Several times. Basically opening and closing the scissor blades against the glass lip. Thank you for showing how to sharpen the trimmer blade, brilliant. Would this work with a paper guillotine too?
I use heavy duty foil to sharpen EVERYTHING in my house including my cricut needle but do you think I ever thought about using it for my paper cutter? Nope! 🤦🏻♀️ 😂 I've been fighting with this one too. I have the same one you have and I have the worst time finding blades for it. But now I will just sharpen my original one! Thanks Desiree! 💕
Omg same here haha thanks so much for posting this I’ve actually been trying to fix a an old guillotine that was given to me a few years ago. Loved them ones but it just bends the paper now.
Can youuu literally just sharpen your cricut blade with this foil? 😭Will that work for silhouette blades too? They areee hellaaa expensive for me to afford 🥲.
I've never found using foil successful at sharpening blades but I think it may be I've used enough layers so thanks for taking the time to explain this.
Awww-sommme! I thought this might work - I've been sharpening scissors like this for years - but was glad to have you kinda give me the OK to do my sliding cutter this way. I forgot about my corner rounders, so Yay! Question... I tried to punch foil with one of those paper edge trimmers? ...the one that makes the pretty cuts all down the side? ...I know that Martha Stewart makes several of them. Anyway, it just chewed up the foil and jammed the cutter, tho I was able to un-stick it with some effort and only moderately colorful language. Any thoughts on that? I mean the cutter, not my language. Thanks! Smiles from the Southern California desert, MK 😁☀️🌵
Hi! Not sure about what to do for those trimmers. I would try the foil again, just go really slowly. I don't have one so I can experiment and see. I hope that helps a little. :-)
Apparently, replacement blades for my X-acto paper trimmer don't exist anymore, so thanks for this tip! Like so many, I never thought to apply this scissors trick to my trimmer, and wouldn't have thought of the heavy-duty foil!
Go slow, if your blade is really dull, you have to slide it very slowly. You'll probably have to do it alot for it finally sharpen. Don't rush, take your time. It works, I promise.
@@DesireeTV i popped it out the blade is attached to a Plastic piece. Is that what you mean by you have to replace the entire rotary part? Platic and and all ?
If I need to replace my blade, how do I remove it? I have the same cutter and I find that many have a different cutter. I just haven't figured out how to get it off the guide.
You have to open up the slider part. Move the little blue switch to the right and lift up the orange slider. Then pull out the blade that has the blue part on it. You will need to buy replacement blades from Fiskars. I haven't found generic replacements for it.
I have this exact board and I can't figure out for the life of me how to change the blade. I used the foil as a temporary fix. thank you so much for this but How in the HELL do you change the blades?? I can't get the blade out of the blue holder at all...
Yes I tried too and I couldn't figure it out either. I think you have to remove the blade entirely and just buy a new one. The foil trick has been working for me for years now.
It depends on how frequently you use the trimmer and what type of papers you are cutting. I cut laminated paper and cardstock alot so my blades need replacing/sharpening more often, at least 2-3 times a year.
Sorry to tell you that but it can't sharpen a steel blade aluminium is soft and the blades are made of hardend steel. You have to sharpen it with a harder material as the steel blade like Dimond sharpener or stone sharpeners or similar.
this actually worked???? oh my gosh you're such a life saver!!
YAY!!!!!! So glad it helped!!!

Yes give this a try!!! You may need to do it quite a few times, but just go slow and eventually it will work!!
Fantastic thank you so much for sharing this idea. I go through cutting blades once a month so this is going to help me save money and the cardstock will look more professional. ❤
Yes you can do this hack for maintenance as well to make your blades last longer. Go slowly, back and forth with the foil.

You're welcome, I still have mine too and I just used the foil hack and it works good as new!!!
Thank you for sharing. My paper trimmer is a Provocraft. I don't know if they still make the blades. I badly needed this video.
Oh, I knew about this trick for scissors but didn't know it would work for other blades too. Thank you!
Came here with this exact problem, now I'm admiring the cut lines on the foil with fewer and fewer snags
Yes keep going back and forth cutting the foil and you'll be surprised at how sharp the blade gets again!!
Thank you oh so much! Worked like a charm.
YAY!!!!!
This is amazing! I never knew you could do this. Paper trimmer blade is now ready to make some Christmas cards. :)
YAY!!!
Oh my gosh-how clever! I just bought a new pair of scissors. I’ll try on my old pair as well as my trimmer. Thanks so much.
Yay! Let me know how it works for you! :-)
I have the same cutter. Can you tell me which Fiskars blade I need to buy?
If you try this method, you may not need to buy one. I'm not sure what blade this one takes.
Thanks for the tip. I will let you know how it works out for me.
Great!!

I’ve never tried it with a guillotine paper cutter but I’m guessing it will. I’ve never heard of the glass trick. 🤔😊
Thanks
Yay! Can't wait to try.
Thank you so much!!
Amazing thank you!!
Awesome! I was about to return my corner rounder 😂🤣 thank you!!!!!!!

@@DesireeTV I think it does... teo great minds on the same track can't be all bad! ...and thicker foil than I have, that's for sure! Thanks again 😁
Thanks for the great tip!!

Esto me va salvar la vida ❤❤❤
When I tried to do that but it just tore up the foil, what am I doing wrong?
Go slow, if your blade is really dull, you have to slide it very slowly. You'll probably have to do it alot for it finally sharpen. Don't rush, take your time. It works, I promise.
How do you replace the blade on this
You have to pop it out and replace the entire rotary part. The blades are expensive in my opinion, so I tried this and it worked.
@@DesireeTV i popped it out the blade is attached to a Plastic piece. Is that what you mean by you have to replace the entire rotary part? Platic and and all ?
Nice...tks

I take the blade out, turn it 1/4" turn and reinsert so you don't dull the blade.
Smart!! TFS!!!
Can you show us?

This cleans the blade, which makes it cut better, but definitely does not sharpen the blade.
About how long do you use a blade before it starts getting dull and need to be sharpened?
It depends on how frequently you use the trimmer and what type of papers you are cutting. I cut laminated paper and cardstock alot so my blades need replacing/sharpening more often, at least 2-3 times a year.
@@DesireeTV Think I need a new trimmer. I bought a cheap one from Hobby Lobby and it is dull after 1 month of usage on designer paper and cardstock.
I must be doing it wrong. It’s not cutting the foil. It’s crinkling it/tearing 😂
You may have to start super slow. Don't rush, go back and forth little by little instead of one long swipe. ☺
Thanks so much for the insight and tip! Great video and info. ❤
Sorry to tell you that but it can't sharpen a steel blade aluminium is soft and the blades are made of hardend steel.
You have to sharpen it with a harder material as the steel blade like Dimond sharpener or stone sharpeners or similar.
Well this has worked for me and many other people so... 🤔🤨
Hmm, didn't work on my Fiskars. The blade just tore up the foil same as it's been doing with paper.
Keep doing it. You may have to do it 20-30 times back and forth. I had to do that too with mine.
Aluminum foil? What?! Genius!!
YES!!!
I tried it, and the aluminium just tore.
Go slow, like really slow. And slide the blade back and forth in tiny slides instead of just one long swipe.
Wow thank you!!
