ZPL is insane. The guy also makes mario kart custom tracks, and he remade almost all of the SNES mario kart tracks in MKWii in a day. Making ONE custom track usually takes days-weeks. This guy speedran it all and they’re amazing. I’m so glad to see such a big youtuber giving one of the most skilled modders the recognition he deserves.

Agreed, ZPL has a ton of talent with making custom maps in Mario games. Having the ability to make good race tracks and good open maps for a platformer is insane.

I’m glad that custom kingdoms are being created, but all of these lack major focal features. An extremely important part of level design are elements that only appear once to give an anchor point to help with navigation. Plus they make exploration and the level as a whole more interesting.
Well that's why some fan made stuff doesn't feel as "real" as official games.. they know what they are doing in official releases lol
A fair few of these look to me Mario Kart tracks with enemies and moons, rather than specifically designed platforming worlds. Visually they look great, but from a level design perspective those definitely aren't built for a platformer.

Agreed, these are beautiful maps but the level design could definitely use some work.
Oh, that explains why they didn't quite feel right to me. All I could say was that they're a bit same-y. Definitely very cool, very visually impressive, and once the guy levels up his level design skills, he's going to be making some absolutely amazing things.
Gotta say, I'm not too big on the whole cj's head inflating and shaking thing. The rest of the editing (zooms when he's talking and the gameplay isn't important included) feel great, but not so much the weird head stuff.
Yup, I like seeing experimentation from editors, but I don't think that one should stick :)
I didn't like the zooms either, I think it was done poorly, made me dizzy (an instant cut but NOT mid-sentence works best)

It wouldn't be a good idea for all kingdoms, but for some I wish the bench was just like in the air (or on some pillar or something) near the odyssey, you can obviously see it but it takes some work to reach and you get a good view of the whole kingdom
Hide and seek + ZPL's maps would be insane
ZPL's MKWii custom tracks always have some of the best visuals, and it seems his custom Odyssey worlds keep that trend.

The cave kingdom really reminds me of the star road thing from Mario RPG, it's so good
These maps don't feel like Mario maps to me. Something about the positioning, and I think the way the light interacts with the blocks is weird. But I think these are meant to be inspired by like Super Mario World or older Mario games in general. So it's cool to see these in a 3D environment, and certainly pretty amazing for one person doing this as a hobby, but I wouldn't say it qualifies as being dubbed a fan-made sequel

The Animal Crossing stage is a track from Mario Kart 8 DLC. It has 4 versions, each having a different seasons, hence the season changing pipes.

I am noticing a lack of verticality to the levels. From what I've seen in Odyssey, there's a wide range of heights and exploration. This looks amazing, but is relatively flat and exploration feels limited because of it.
Like Cave Kingdom, for example, looks really pretty, but it just looks like there's a lot of copied textures, on an extremely flat plane with water to swim in.
I love the mod, but its clear its not official. The textures having different resolutions, the models often being low poly, and that the streets in animal crossing look glitchy at the corners, and having a different grass between the rocks than the rest of the kingdom. It's not good for nintendo standards, but the fact that 1 single person did all this is mind blowing
ngl, haunted kingdom reminds of a galaxy in the mario galaxy games. I don't remember which one of the ghost themed galaxies tho.
