    It's worth reminding people, you can use the Farm Station to put Farmer's Touch on wild plants. With Superspecialized and Exuberant you can harvest every 9 cycles. I know that's not quite the zero work colony, but gardening is a fine hobby for dupes.

    • @FrancisJohnYT
      @FrancisJohnYT  Год назад +4

      I could never bring myself to do that, it's just an efficiency thing.
      Wild Exuberant sleet wheat with Farmers touch gives 757 kcal a cycle
      Planted Exuberant sleet wheat with farmers touch gives 3,200 kcal a cycle
      You would need to apply 4 times the farmer touch to the wild stuff to get the same result as it takes longer to grow. So I figure if I'm going with fertilizer I will go with planted crops as the gains scale so much more.

    Two tweaks you may look into:
    First, your reactors overheated because you put the water in line. If you split it you could still run the reactors water-starved. The only downside is the resulting steam / waste leaves at a higher temperature. Really neat for power generation, really awful if you need to cool it down. But if you meter things out or at least split the water pipe output, you should be able to run more reactors with the same amount of water.
    Second, I think you might be able to use Conveyor Meters with timer resets to drip-feed 1KG packets of uranium, possibly with less overheating automation machines.
    Other than that, still some impressive engineering for a "casual" playthrough :D.

    I love those glass tiles!
    There is another way to generate those without buried object inside. Farm tiles are not essential.
    I just build a lot of pipes and limit pockets of glass to 1000g. Then just let them flow to the liquid bridge while using tje snip tool to keep them 1000g. When you will be emptying them, glass tiles will form out of bottles of molten glass.
    Yes. you ll end up with a pipe inside those natural tiles, but make that pipe radiant and you ll heve yourself a cooling/heating pipe already in tiles.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I do not know whether or not you need to have a tile under there to catch that bottle of molten glass. I just build it and haven't actually tested this. and you have 15 tiles of that natural goodness.
    I do everythig to get rid of those cracks. SO ANNOYING!!
    btw love your videos and i really enjoyed the card colony one!

    In regards to the glass tiles, if instead of how you do it, you build the hydro tiles one below where you want the natural tiles, and then once the glass is in them, use 'empty contents', your dupes will come by and remove the 'liquid glass' from them, which then becomes a bottle on top, which then solidifies into a natural tile, without anything in it.

    I made a rocket silo with a cooling jacket through the whole thing to condense and freeze all the nuclear fallout so it can be transported as a solid to pool of waste heated up with a liquid tepidizer.
    Sure it's not the most energy efficient, but I'm really sick of random blobs of waste leaking everywhere.

  • @nutpeabutter9431
    @nutpeabutter9431 Год назад +1

    The inverse is also true for research reactors: maximizing the amount of enriched uranium but carefully limiting the water allows you to generate ungodly amounts of heat(40 turbines worth) You inject just enough water to keep the enriched uranium at 2000c (preventing a meltdown), which translates to superheated nuclear waste coming out at the same temperature, constituting the bulk of the heat produced. I think it goes by the name CLRR and there are a couple posts and videos floating around.

    Putting less water into the reactors does work. It has basically the opposite effect of what you've got going now with using less uranium. The more uranium in a reactor the faster the uranium heats up, and the temperature of the uranium inside of the reactor is calculated separately from the temperature of the reactor itself and the temperature of the waste is the same as the temperature of the uranium, so instead of getting cool waste that you don't really have to manage the temperatures of you get superheated waste. You can run 20+ turbines on the output of one reactor. I think people call them CLRRs, coolant limited research reactor. Definitely a bit tricky to run, they can break and melt down during saves so usually people set a timer to throw a couple of full packets into it prior to the cycle flipping over just to be safe. Definitely something you'll want to play around with in sandbox before instituting it into a game I think, but definitely worth playing with if you ever need a ton of power.

      Pretty sure that water starved reactors have made sour gas boilers far less attractive.
      It's that perfect amount of power right in between the 10KW of a petroleum boiler and the 50KW+ of a sour gas boiler.

I told a friend about Into The Breach, telling her about how I made one unit kill every other units in a map including my own in one turn to gain an achievement and she said it was a good thing she knew it was just a game because out of context it was weird. So I told her about some of the wonderful wonderful things you say when you play Rimworld.

    if you build a bottle emptier on top of a door that constantly opens and closes, on top of a water tank with a pitcher pump and an auto-sweeper there... Won't that compress all of the water in bottles in one spot? Since the auto-sweeper would get the water, give it to the bottle emptier, and then the bottle emptier would stop working because the door opened and it would drop a bottle of water on the ground.

    Another stupidly easy way to get heat for natural tiles is just building a steel tempshift plate in magma, deconstruct it and use the new move command. I use it to cook 5kg blobs of algae surrounded by metal tiles. Just have the dupe drop it on the metal and move it in a timely manner to another location that needs cooking to spread the heat.

    I like to just turn the water planet into a automated food factory.. just put Nuke plant use the power to run everything, the rads for the launchers and to temperate the farms.. feed the ocean to the plants let them harvest themselves scoop up everything with sweepy and fire it off for cooking. If you plant some grubfruit you have some surplus sulfur to feed to sweetles or grubgrubs to get decent grubfruit and also just dump a bunch in every farm.. they'll speed up everything and the sweetles give you some sucrose for grubfruit preserve in rockets and you can make some high value food with the grubfruits. just go nuts on the numbers and you only have to worry about processing it fast enough

    The Research Reactor can run with less than the 4kg/s it "wants". This just results in more heat being generated. Running three reactors on a single 10kg/s pipe is fine, so long as you meter it to 3.33 each and they will all run hot. If you don't meter and runa single pipe then the first two will take 4 each and those after will meltdown.

    The niobium setting only makes sense because niobium forms a tile from very little mass compared to other liquid metal volcanoes. Basically for other liquid metal volcanoes, to use the same setting means that you are just adding more steps to get the same result. Though it does look cool so there is that.

    3 Aquatuners doesn't feel casual enough for your cooling; I think you should build a system that can revert magma level temperatures to frozen in one cycle; you know, to handle your concerningly high increase in Nuclear meltdowns.

    Use conduction panels instead. The deconstructed panel drops it's material at the input port, the tile appears in the center. as long as the input port is at the bottom, you don't get buried tiles with the metal, and it looks better.

    good pipe splitting. to make it error proof have a liquid bridge split out three ways. It will always spit out equally on each pipe.
    Personally, I went the reactor route for the rads on farm tiles for food. Exuberant seeds + sweetle tending + fertilizer means you need like what... 5 crops? it's overkill.
