Find out how to properly restore your headlights and use a Ceramic Coating to make them Super Clear and fully protected. Also, check out what happens when I Ceramic Coat the nice hood of my WS6 Trans Am VS the rattle canned hood on the cheapest AMG car in the world, the $200 C43 AMG. This video is going to be step by step and totally DIY.
I'm super excited to announce a totally free way that anyone can support the channel!! I was approved for an Amazon Influencer account which allows RUclipsrs like myself, and other creators to earn a small commission from sales generated from people first clicking on my Amazon link, and then buying anything from Amazon. This doesn't cost you a penny as Amazon compensates the creators for driving traffic and sales to the site. So even if you don't buy the product or tool that I link in the video description box, you are still supporting the channel by shopping on Amazon after you clicked through any of my links. Each video will have either specific links to things I use or talk about in the video, or you will see my general LegitStreetCars Amazon link like this. www.amazon.com...
Next time you need car parts, tools, diapers, condoms, fidget spinners or anything on Amazon think of good ole Alex from LegitStreetCars!
In case anyone is looking for feedback on how this works, I just did this to my E55 and the headlights look immaculate. I swapped the ceramic coating for 3m clear coat, and used both meguiars polishing compounds. I bought the sanding kit from amazon, and did 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000. Then I used the MG ultra cut compound, followed it with the MG ultra finishing polish and wiped with alcohol before applying the clear coat. Whole thing cost me $58, and I can re use all the stuff a bunch of times. Only went through like a quarter of a bottle of each compound. Highly recommend.

You made it so clear that it looked like there's no glass cover on the headlight at all. Great job! So amazed with the result.
DAYUM!!
Right!!! Think this is the best finished product out of all the videos I seen!!!
I gotta get this ceramic coating stuff.
I'm a detailer myself and this is a great diy. Really well done. I just purchased a D3 A8 and it had this problem. One thing worth mentioning is that if the sealant/coating wears, the plastic yellows faster because the uv coating on the plastic from the factory has been sanded off. Also, I recommend adding a polishing step with a fine polish before sealing. Heavy compounds like that are still not fully clear.
he did use the meguiars fine polish...
@@albussnow you're right, I missed that.
Is ceramic coating the headlights better than clearcoating them?
@@legioner9 nope, ceramic coating won't protect from uv long enough to make a difference. Highly recommend clear coating them and then ceramic coating them periodically afterwards. It's a pain but less so and looks better than repolishing all the time.
@@charlesaferg Thank you for the answer. I just hope that the clearcoat will not crack in 2 - 3 years.
You guys have everything at hand in the USA, i'm so jealous. Here in spain i went to my local hardware store and asked for 800, 1500, 2000 grit sandpaper, they just looked at me with blank stares like i asked them for plutonium or something. Then one pipes up and says '' 600 is the lowest you can get''. So i explained i needed super fine paper for my headlights. ''ahh'', he says, ''use toothpaste''.
At this point i just walked out. The internet i hear you say, well, nobody knows the correct name of the street (including the local post office). Everything is such a frikin ball ache......i only want to restore my headlights...snif snif. haha.
"See a need, fill a need". 10 years later, The Bee Guru's Apprentice is the biggest provider of all kinds of sandpaper in the entire EU.
@@sagut0 not a bad idea! count me in as an Angel Investor! haha
@@juangabriel4987 I'm not the OP. I was just giving the idea, but maybe I should move to Spain, and start the business myself! 😆😄😄
Go to a wood worker store in Spain. You can get sand paper up to 20,000 grit.
In my country we don't have water and soap, .. and we have our lights on a head
Just wanted to let you know I really enjoy watching your videos. I live in LA near LAX but grew up in northwest IL and grew up working at a BMW/Mazda/VW place. I learned how to drive stick on an 88 BMW M5 and drove (aftermarket) 60's Shelby Cobra and 67 Corvette Stingray convertible so my passion for cars is strong. I like learning to work on my 2014 VW GLI with stage 1 Unitronic tune and building up my Tekton tool kits. I've saved tons of money learning to change my own engine/transmission motor mounts, brakes and heater core. I enjoy scouring the internet for tips and tricks on detailing and maintenance of my car. I appreciate your contribution to the car aficionado passion and helping people. When I moved to LA my first sales job, one of my customers was Carol Shelby and had private access to about 30 plus cars of his. It was really cool to be in that private warehouse and check out those cars. I love cars.
How long would you say the headlights will stay nice and clear for after using ceramic coating?
I must say in a regrettable fashion before I could spend any amount of money on plastic headlight refinishing I would look for a new light replacement online from a reputable seller. Oem repair your video is spot on yet as you pointed out one headlight will always look better because it is new and although you have repaired the old one the chrome is still faded. Classy video.
Thanks for watching. Replacing the lens is kind of a big project for most. You have to remove it, gut it, bake it in an oven, remove the lens, deal with glue or silicon for the new lens. My process is around $20 if you already have a drill and/or dual action sander. The amount of ceramic coating you use is next to nothing as well. The other headlight was brand new but most people won't have one new headlight on their car.
I replaced the lens on my E55 because it made sense since I was painting the inside so ever scenario is different but for the vast majority, a process like this can save a lot of time and money.
Dude, great info and video! About the plane sounds, when you were shooting outside, you either had a lav mic on or the in camera mic was so close to your mouth, the auto gain adjusted to your voice level and just about muted the plane sound. But when you were in the garage, it sound like you were using the on camera mic when you were standing at a distant which caused the auto gain to be jacked up, bringing in all kinds of ambient sounds, most noticeably, the plane. Just use a lav mic and if you can manually adjust sound level on the camera or app, adjust for your voice to reduce background sound.
For how long they stay shiny,? Thanks and good info
I've done this a couple of times all by hand and yes it is a pain. Highly recommend the mop to do all the rubbing down. It's wel worth it mind you for the look afterwards.
As a Mercedes owner this channel is such a treasure so much great information and great editing! Keep it up Alex!
I agree
Even your old vids are priceless❤❤❤
Absolutely going to crack onto it next weekend. I’ve already got the ceramic coating. . Love your results ❤️. Ill be doing my CLK 500 shitty yellowed headlights and my mrs wants her headlights done too. Cheers
Good video where can you buy suede applicator rags, and also after opening the bottle of product is there a problem with air inside curing or drying.(Using product multiple times).
Great discount 👍I just ordered the ceramic coating. Thanks, that’s a great price, for an awesome product!
Very Nice Product! Thanks for the Product Support! Awesome job!
How did the ceramic coating hold? Is the headlights still clear or any yellow have starting to show any updates?
Thanks for your time making this video and educating in the process, you are so well spoken and actually one of the best presenters of any products. That would include on TV as well. Greetings from Riverside California, this is Alan.
I vote for Alex getting his own velocity channel show that shows him working on old AMGs
Just used this on my parent’s 2015 CX-5. Great technique!
Love your Trans Am!!! It's a beauty. As for the planes, you could just pause and edit out the time you wait for them to leave.
Your trans am is so so sick. First car was a 98 firebird it’s sooooo cool to see a sick ws6 getting the goods
I had 2004 impala did the wet sanded 200grt up 800grt saw that all the stuff was inside of the light assembly so going to get new assemblies.
Finally a guy on RUclips that knows how to do headlight restoration correctly!
There are many, you just need to search properly.
The professional detailers even explain and do it much better (not hating on him) but their knowledge exceeds his naturally since that is all they do, polish and make things shine.
Your channel is a great source of info all around though, much love, keep it up! :)
@@TheDim3s I searched and couldn’t find “The Professional Detailers”. If you don’t mind sharing, what do the other guys do different? Only other thing I’ve seen out of most RUclips videos is clay barring the headlights and spraying clear coat which isn’t the best option.
great video for beginners like me! Thank you for taking all that time to explain and show options.
I see you're in illinois. How does that stuff last on the headlights in the midwest winters on a daily driver car that's stored outside?
Another great video. You are helping me get my old E500 into great shape again. I love the car but it lives outside, in the California Sun and, it has taken a beating.
Can i ask you will the ceramic coating wirk better then tinting for protecting against scratches or chips and how often do i add ceramic
How long does this stand up to the weather exactly? I'd like to see that same headlamp assembly after year or so in the elements..
I like your enthusiasm and obsession of perfection, in a few words - The Best or nothing!
Excellent video... Thx..
Question.. can you do multiple ceramic coatings?
Considering that the thicker the protective coating, the more it would last.
What’s better for headlights on long term: ceramic coating of wrapping?
You really did a great job its fantastic!.i have a pressure washing business in the philippines i do concrete cleaning & restoration. This coming february i am going to open a car-truck washing and detailing also and your videos really helps me a lot!.👌🏼
I am curious how long this process lasts. Does the fog come back in a year? 6 months? 2 years? Ever? Thank you for all your awesome videos!
Hello, how long would say that coating will hold up on the lens?
Curious to know this as well
How long does it last with this ceramic coating?
I really appreciate your expertise. I also provide this service to customers. The only difference is the coating that I am using can last 3 - 5 years but I also use your ceramic coating in the video, and it works great.
Good day, if I may ask, which ceramic coating do you use? I am polishing headlights, tried few coatings, but none last more than a year and half. Thank you kindly.
Hi Alex. Don't sweat the plane noise. Keep up the good work.
Been doing this for myself and friends for years as far as cleaning them. But the ceramic coating I've never heard about before thank you what's a fantastic way to preserve them for sure. ☆☆☆☆☆
I only use liquid "COLLINITE 845" that I buy on eBay for about $22. It's super easy to apply and buff off with a Micro fiber cloth. Wash my 2 cars once a week at the do it yourself car wash using the pressure wand on rinse only. The water runs off just like the product you demonstrate in the video. By the time I drive home "2 miles" the car is 90% dry with absolutely no water spots. I can do each car at least 5 times with one bottle. Two applications last a full year and only takes one hour to do.... Be sure to do it in a shady location
How do you get the inside of headlights clean? Over time like dust & etc get inside some how. I have heard to put them in dishwasher without the bulbs in them of course. Is this true & works?
I'll follow your way because I know you know what your doing. I never trusted any other people's method of headlight restore. Sweet.
How long before you need to reapply the coating? Plan on keeping my car for a while, so wanna keep them from yellowing again
That wet sanding is only for the plastic headlights right? On real glass ones we may do the same?
Yes, I agree the Samcrac video was a disaster watching yet enlightening to know he had to after he could not find the replacement headlights and the ones he found were over a thousand dollars. As I stated I have replaced several associates headlights that were utterly destroyed with brand new part with new bulbs already in them for about $48 dollars. Yes your kit experience and time shown for under $25 dollars is a Classy video.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT TRANS AM OF YOURS!!!!!
It is true that if you sand down and buff out your headlight it get old and degrade faster, in like 3 - 4 months it become frosty and dull again. I notice this on every car paint too, not just headlight.
You are so amazing!!! It’s the best being taught by a Mercedes Technician!!! Keep up the amazing videos❤️
Great video Alex! After watching, I did my a209 with the kit from 3M. I ordered my ceramic coating from Avalon King last week. Thanks for the coupon code.
I think Im gonna try this on my 03 Ram . Because the truck looks great except for those foggy headlights. Thanks!
What if I don’t use the ceramic coding how big is the difference and how long would they last without it and just finishing it off with the polish?
Ha ha, I know about the planes. I live next to DFW in Dallas. Noisy! Thanks for the info. Keep em coming! How long does it last?
Can you substitute denatured alcohol for the rubbing alcohol?
How is it holding up after a year with the ceramic coating? Are the lights starting to fade
just add more after some time like 10 months and that's it
i love Chicago hahah i lived there for the last 6 years but now im moving back to New York. I will miss it
Great job man! I'll to proceed with this process.
Hi Alex. That was really satisfying to watch. But what's the best way to polish a car paint? Is it the same way you did these headlights? starting from the buffing steps?
Have you thought about moving the airport to a different location?
I'm gonna get some of that ceramic stuff and apply it to both of my Trans Ams in a few months. Great job with the headlight, btw.
"Have you thought about moving the AIRPORT to a different location?" LOL... LMAO... Best joke of the week.
Wanker
What is rubbing alcohol ? is it surgical sprit ?
Love your videos, I currently own a 2008 Cadillac DTS, and was considering to purchase a 2006 Mercedes-Benz S430 4Matic with 150,000 miles, I have heard horror stories and indecisive! HELP.. LOVE MY CADDY!
CADILLAC MAN !
Would it not be better to paint them after polishing with clear coat? and then apply ceramic coating?
Thanks for the link, I hand sanded lights on a 2003 BMW, lots of work, it would have been nice to use one of my DA's. Thanks again!
I'm addicted to this series
this is great and I have done it on so many cars, but unfortunately, it does not last. It was more fun to take the lenses off of my W211 and replace with brand new ones. 3 years into it and they still look brand new. If I have to do it every 8 years, I am okay with it, rather than doing this every 8 months.
Hey man. Should I use sealer, wax or ceramic coating on my car? Or maybe some or all of them and if so in what order?
Just did mine. Worked like a charm. Thank you.
How's it holding up?
Ha, I could barely hear those planes going over and still could hear you very well. I live near Nellis AFB here in Vegas and they come right over just a few hundred feet up. When the B1 bombers come over it shakes the house. How long does that ceramic coating last?
CHI TOWN IN THE HOUSE !
how long do your results last?
Dude luv ur work , dnt worry about the planes its all good , i have a W211 2009 avenguard , what tint should i go with dont want to lose the bluish colour
You are the second person to recommend this product I think I'm going to get it now thanks!
James Alexander Its so cool. I can't wait to do it on the other cars
Great job. Is the ceramic coating used as an alternate to a clear coat?
Not an alternative to clear coat, added protection, most say it is better than wax
Can you apply ceramic coating outside?? or is it a bad idea?
How long does the ceramic coating last? versus a clear coat paint that might last for years. The key is UV resistant
I live by ORD , how much do you charge to polish a apply ceramic coat 9h for a Lexus GS350 2015?
Do you do headlight restoration on other people's cars ? If so where are you located?
How long will this ceramic coating last before the headlights start to yellow and haze again? And when reapply does it need to be sanded and buffed again?
"How to restore headlights with ceramic coating."
Step 1: Normal headlight restoration.
Step 2: Apply ceramic coating.
There. I just saved you 11 minutes.
New subscriber here. Excellent video! Great content, presented in an interesting, and easy to understand fashion. Outstanding camera work, editing, and audio, in spite of the air traffic, lol. You're smart enough to use a wireless lavalier mic, which makes a tremendous difference and provides the best possible rendition and clarity of spoken audio.
I tried a Maguire's headlight restoration kit on my Lincoln MKX's headlights, but it didn't go that well. I tried the process about four times with a battery oprated drill, but still not much improvement. Your process has several more steps involved and probably would have worked on my MKX. Keep up the fantastic work!
This is the way to do it no cutting corners, great vid!
make some videos on the w163 MLs. Those cars are treasure troves. Prewired to install any options that were not added during point of sell. Easy to work on too,
Alex, the Amazon link to the wet/dry sanding discs and backing pad disappeared from your list.
how is the ceramic coating on the headlight holding up?
That last car... the one you coated half the hood... those hood vents... `79 or `80 280zx?
So using 2k clear coat will not work as polishing and ceramic coating?
Your Trans Am is a gem!
finally a headlight tutorial that I feel good about following!
Greetings from Chicago!
I defiantly know how annoying those planes are haha
I did Adams polish on mine and in 2-3 weeks went back to looking yellow and patchy. Now I just recently resanded and clear coated.
Would love to get advice from a local youtuber about growing the channel. My brother ( Bullets Garage) and I are subscribers now!
Cheers!
How long does that ceramic coating last? Great work on the vid.
How long will it last? How often do you need to re-apply the ceramic coating? Thank you do sharing this video would definitely try it! Salute!
It's warrantied for 3 years which is right line with most other ceramic coating
Where are you at,Bensenville,Wood Dale? Used to live there for a wisle. Landing plane sounds ...
Can u apply this in cold weather? Great job by the way👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
No. You want it to be around normal room temperature.
Ok cool. I’ll get some and save it for a hot day
Does the ceramic coating affect the light output?
you are the best, thank for your video, calification AAAAA+++++. Greeting from San Juan Puerto Rico
Apex Detailing is a good channel for stuff like this, he's a very detail oriented guy and reviewer.
I would highly recommend clear-bra. The ceramic coating won't really protect it from further abrasion from sand and rocks, nor does it really prevent the plastic from yellowing again over time.
I had clearbra on my mustang headlights after polishing them and after 5 years the clearbra looked pretty worn but the plastic underneath was perfect.
I do headlight restorations at Walmart tire center from time to time and wish we had the finer pads and sand pads
this method only applies to glass lens or can be use on plastic lens also?
Does thw ceramic coating come off as sticky even after you buff it out?
