    I’ve always known that I have wavy hair, but my attempts to encourage more waves haven’t gone very well. I wish you could go to a hair stylist for a curly styling just to prove it could look good this way.

    You forgot the way the hair keeps the shape after being up in ponytails or buns... A straight hair girl can take out the bun or ponytail and just shake her hair and it will fall perfectly straight with no show of any marks from hairties etc or bends from the bun. Our curly/wavy hair doesn't work like that... in fact, you can NOT take out a ponytail or bun you had on and just shake it out and leave like that, you'll look crazy! The hair keeps the shape and marks and you always have to either wet it or put it up again... That's why I almost never put my hair up. I always wear it in its natural curls because I look my best like that and get compliments daily and stares from people in public. Mostly from guys but also from women too, sometimes the stinkeye from jealous ones but also from those who try to see if it's real curls or not.

      100% yes! I used to flat iron the lengths of my hair and curl the ends with it. Only used a heat protectant (no hair spray!) and it would retain those curls for days. It really baffled some friends whenever they asked what I used for the curls. If I did completely straight hair, it was pretty much ruined the moment it was put in a ponytail. Who'd have thought that the reason my hair always retained those curly ends was because it wanted to be curly?!

      I don't know if that is true. When I was younger my hair didn't have a pony tail, the scrunchie always fall, but when I was 16 my hair maintained the shape of anything. But, now with a lot of care it doesn't happen... I think is the moisture

      you're kidding! really?! :O I thought that was normal for everyone (keeping the curly-ish shape after a bun or ponytail). Sorry if this sounds weird by the way. Am literally jaw-dropped at realising I might be a curly/wavy person. Thanks for this comment! Helps!!

    I'm so glad you made a video about this. I've had ringlet curls from a young age and as I got older, it became harder to manage. I'm the only one in my immediate family with curls. I love my hair but I wish all this knowledge and products had been available when I was young so my poor mom didn't have to spend an hour getting out the impossible knots with scissors as a last resort. So grateful for all the knowledge and information that you pack into your videos. I agree with the others who have commented on how great your hair looks.

    I love this video! I discovered my wavy hair in 2019, and I did transition and wore it that way for quite some time. However, I just don't have enough wave or curl for it to hold for very long. So I decided to just get it to a healthy state, and then style it however I want (I usually like to throw some wand curls in, and work with my natural texture). But just having the knowledge of what my natural hair actually was made a world of difference in how I took care of my hair. Ultimately, it has given me so much more freedom than flat ironing it ever did.

    I love this video! I found your channel a few years ago. Your hair looked so healthy. Mine, at the time , was a dry frizzy mess. I decided that my hair would be one of my hobbies after I retired. I retired a little over a year ago. My hair has thankfully finished transition. I can not thank you enough. My hair is now healthy. Thanks, Courtney. Anyone wanting to try this. Do it! It does take time, but it is worth it!

    I’m so glad I came across your videos. I’ve been trying to be curly for a couple years now, only to go back to straightening. When you say to just wash your hair and put gel soaking wet/micro plop/diffuse, this is the best my hair has looked 😮 Now I can get better. And I’m so glad you talk about transition time, because I felt like I had crazy frizzy hair and everything I’ve tried so far hasn’t helped. Thank you so much.

    Great job and *so* helpful for those who are just starting out. I attempted to wear my wavy hair in its natural state in 2017, mostly following the Curly Girl method, but after 3 months, I gave up. Of course, I went back to flat ironing and doing all the things. 😐 Then, 2020 came and I had nothing but time on my hands, so I tried again. I slowly discovered (with your help) what works best for _my_ fine, gray, wavy hair and now, all is right with the world! 😆 Thank you as always for all the great info! ❤️

    Thank you for all your teachings. I have learned so much from you.
    I am on a hair journey to healthier hair !
    I have naturally wavy hair which I love & embrace.
    However, my hair is very thin, and for the past year it has dramatically changed from being naturally maintenance free, flowing & volumous, to looking dry & dull, and I am unsure why ?
    I usually air dry my hair & use foils only once a year. I just started using a leave-in conditioner & oil on my ends, and a clarifying shampoo and a deep conditioning hair mask. This is all helping! Yet I want to grow it longer & stronger ! So I am on my way !
    Thank You !

    I always knew I had wavy hair (even permed it in the '80's). 9 yrs ago I stopped coloring my hair and now have beautiful salt and pepper hair that is long. I really wanted to embrace my curl but thought that mousse was going to give me more volume as my hair is fine. Since I started to use gel and try the curly styling I am energized to continue looking forward to better hair. One reason I wanted to explore this method is the amount of fall out and breakage even though I don't overdo hot styling. Thanks so much!

    I always had a few waves in my big,bushy ,voluminous ,frizzy, super dry hair. But I stumbled across a curly girl video talking about this about three years ago and I have been doing the super conditioning and all the other curly girl steps since then. It’s taken me about 2 1/2 to 3 years to figure out and get my hair in great condition with really nice waves/curls. But now my hair is super healthy , and I have probably 2C to 3b curls and get lots of compliments on my hair now. I initially thought it would be easier than blow drying and straightening my hair, but it actually is a lot of work to take care of the waves and deep conditioning frequently, but it is worth it.

    I remember having those waves when I was a teenager, about 13, and straightened it up until last summer...at 38! I'm still probably transitioning a bit, but the waves stay a lot better now. I'd say the bulk of the transition period was about 4-5 months. It's definitely gotten curlier over that time too, or at least, the curls are awakening! I have tight ringlets around my face up to my ear and a couple scattered in the back, so I'm thinking, maybe, those will get more defined as the months go on!

  • @Trenchant468
    @Trenchant468 2 месяца назад

    Well, I have ringlets sometimes at my neck, and wavy hair in humidity or if I highlight and open the cuticle. So I’m guessing I’m a candidate to try this. I’ll try to get some Pantene Volume or BB Sunday. I have some Moroccan Oil Lightweight Leave-in Conditioner. And I have Paul Mitchell Round Trip, so I guess I’ll pile that in. I definitely perceive my hair as very dry, up maybe it’s build-up.

    I have all these except my hair did look presentable as it was not super frizzy and I could use some oil to make it look good, it always has a slight kink in some places and I think it’s 2a. The only problem is everything weighs it down, it’s so hard to define it, it always just falls when I put product in.

  • @ColorfulBallerina
    @ColorfulBallerina 6 месяцев назад +2

    Excellent list. I hated the way my hair would air dry so I blow fried and flat ironed my hair. My outer layer dried swavy-frizzy and my under layers would be wavy/curly. My outer layer grew in wavy after doing CGM for about a year. I guess my outer layer is delicate and damages easily when heat styling is used. Now it's diffusing or air drying for me. Also, if you have a lot of family members with wavy/curly hair you might have wavy/curly hair too.

    • @princessmarthajandio
      @princessmarthajandio 6 месяцев назад +1

      My hair is similar in regards to the outer layer being frizzy and the inner layer curly after air drying. I shampooed my scalp, conditioned my shaft, and air-dried my hair rarely using heat. To fix the frizz and give my shape I only use heatless methods to curly my hair.
      Since October I've been using leave-in conditioner to help with the frizzy but the ends at still frizzy if I don't use some oil. I've also been using apple cider vinegar rinses and hair masks again which have helped my hair frizzy less.

  • @Neurospicybunny
    @Neurospicybunny 5 месяцев назад +1

    I know mine is at least somewhat wavy and I have lots of these signs, but I can't ever get them to look good when I try to style it wavy/curly. It mostly turns into a tangly frizzy stringy mess with some waves. I've tried a lot of different products and methods and combinations of those factors. I've watched many, many videos by you and Manes by Mel. I think it might just be because I'm not willing to give up sulfates/silicones/highlights/heat styling? So I get frustrated and give up and go back to styling it straight or braiding.😬 maybe one day a miracle will happen😄

    About 4 years ago, I was riding the struggle bus with my hair. I couldn't understand why the baby fine, pin straight hair of my childhood had suddenly transformed into being frizzy, poofy and unmanageable. I suspected I had wavy hair but didn't know where to start. Courtney, your channel was a lifesaver and really helped me along this journey. Recently I noticed some texture in my friend's hair that made me suspect that she, too, had wavy hair, and since she had previously lamented that she wished her hair was curly, I told her what I thought. As it turns out, she has some pretty defined waves and her hair looks stunning already. I quickly directed her to this channel. It was a real full circle moment❤ Thanks for doing what you do!

    Hey girlie, I'm wondering if you have any recommendations for myself? My hair does very well on moisture. However, I think it's a little over moisturized, it's light and fluffy. And over stretches (when it's dry, when it's wet it bounces nicely) however, if I do protein it seems to seize up and my hair starts to get really
    Stiff and sticks together. Any recommendations for a really really light protein product? My hair is extremely fine, and I believe my hair is low porosity it has had highlights though.

    I was about 12 years old when I'd tried experimenting with a curling iron. I also had no idea what heat protectant was or that it could hold a curl and I was frustrated it wouldn't hold my style. I've always loved the look of curly hair, and I even had it permed twice, neither of which lasted me long. Over two years ago though, I found that I possibly had wavy or curly hair.
    If you have "bad hair", you more than likely have curly hair, don't second guess yourself! Of course if one doesn't want to put in that work, which is probably as much as a straightening routine, I know you can't please them all.

    I'm still trying to figure out what my hair wants. When I was growing up, it always baby-fine with a very slight wave, but I didn't need to do anything special with it. It let me get away with basic routine of shampoo, conditioner, air-dry, and brush. I never bothered with blow dryers (most days they're just too loud and sensory overload is a problem) or heat styling. I did have a lot of frizz, but I also live in Florida so I just blamed the frizz on the climate.
    Then I had kids, and with each subsequent kid my hair got wavier, and it behaves much less predictably. Now I'm about 15% grey and every single grey strand is twice as thick as my brown strands AND they're all curly, like someone stuck them in a crimper. My normal super lazy routine isn't working anymore but all the "curly" products I've tried weigh my hair down and make it look flat. It spends a lot of time in a braid these days just to keep it compliant.

    I had no idea this was a “thing.” My hair has always made me crazy, but I never thought it was curly. However, I started noticing that after I washed it (it’s just below my chin right now) and bent over to get the underside dry, I had a lot of nice curls. Unfortunately, the top was another thing, just a few slight waves and ends that stuck out. So, I would finish by using one of those drying brushes and then a flat iron. No wonder the top looked so bad!
    Still, I thought that if I got a diffuser and scrunched my hair, that might work. For some reason I decided to look at how to use a diffuser, and suddenly I found myself seeing all these methods for “curly girl” hair!
    I do not want long hair, maybe a little longer, but not much. I’m 71 (I know that sounds really old), and I don’t think long hair looks good on most older women. I have a few gray hairs, but mostly my hair is the same dark brown it’s always been. I never color it.
    I’m going to look to see what you recommend for product (haven’t gotten that far yet), but today I tried some TreSemme (sp?) mousse for curls. It actually worked pretty well. Before that, I tried adding some of their extra hold gel, and maybe I didn’t add enough. It was just okay. So, I tried using a curling iron for some of those stringy areas. But, now I’m thinking I shouldn’t be doing that either!
    I’m going to keep trying because I really hate spending a lot of time on my hair, but I want it to look nice. So far, it seems like your “program” makes the most sense. Thank you.

    Just hover diffusing *might* not work for everyone sadly. I have very fine yet dense hair that weighs itself down and gets weighed down by just water. Hover diffusing might take so long that the water + gel just weighs it down to a looser wave. I personally like the frizz from pixie diffusing so I always do it - so I'd say it's more just, being aware of the pros and cons!

    • @SwavyCurlyCourtney
      @SwavyCurlyCourtney  6 месяцев назад

      I totally get what you're saying!, but it might be the best place to start if you've never diffused your hair before. Diffusing is a fine art, and it takes a while to refine the technique that works best for your hair. Starting with hover diffusing may lead to more success diffusing long term rather than starting with Pixie diffusing exclusively. I hope that makes sense!

      Sounds like you have some waves and curls! Give it a try! It's a bit of journey but focus more on embracing what you have and the health of your hair. You don't have to go crazy with all the products. I have quite a few video's if you are just beginning and a few free guide on my website as well. That link is in the description of the video!

But if it rains even a little. . That's gone .. this is mind boggling . Explains why 2 kids have curly hair and I was weirded by that 😂

I recently watched another curly expert who said only co-wash 2 - 3 times before using shampoo. Am I doing it wrong???

      I am just starting out and can say for me it's a balancing act between weight and hold. I have very fine, low porosity, 2a with some 2b clumps. So far, mousse works better because it is lighter. Gel seems to weigh it down even as it holds better. But I am just beginning this. I could change my mind in 2 weeks. Lol

    I think I realized I might possibly have wavy hair a couple weeks ago. I normally shower at night and let it air dry. When I wake up, I brush the tangles out, but it still gets frizzy and poofy. Once though, I showered in the morning and just let my hair be and my boyfriend was like "Wow, did you curl your hair?". I was honestly a little offended cause I have been trying to get rid of frizz and tangles forever and have been using a straightening shampoo for over two years. I had always thought the frizz and weird kinks in my hair was due to showering at night or sleeping on it weird, but his comment made me sad that my efforts have not been working this whole time. So, I researched, and I kept getting results that said, "You might have wavy hair". I'm still on the fence on whether I actually do have wavy hair or if I'm just extremely delusional and hopeful. It does clump in the shower and has waves when wet, but I haven't bought any products, so they lose a bit of definition at the end of the day. It does give me hope that I do have some texture while finishing up my straightening shampoo so perhaps I will do more research before buying new bottles.

    Wavy and curly are NOT the same and should not be lumped into the same category! My hair has a slight wave, but I don't want curls or ringlets, so I treat it like straight hair, and that works for me. Also, even straight hair can get frizzy in very hot and humid weather.
