There's a few things worth mentioning about Dimensional Magic. The first is that it might yellow over time. I've used the clear Dimensional Magic as well as the glittery silver and glittery gold ones, and between 6 months to a year, the pieces always end up yellowing (also, it seems to yellow even more if you use the glittery gold one). The second thing is that sometimes you have to be careful when you're using it on shrink plastic because it can make the ink run. I used to print designs on the inkjet Shrinky Dinks and I also drew on both the rough & glossy types of Shrinky Dinks with Sharpies and if I used Dimensional Magic to dome the side I drew or printed on, it always made the ink run, even after leaving the ink to dry for a few hours before doming.
Stevie Grant you seem to have a good bunch of exp! What do you recommend then? I've seen in another videos that resin makes the ink bleed too. So what would be your perfect solution?
I've been making charms for bracelets.. I draw on the rough side, shrink.... made a bracelet and the ink bled on my skin. I can't find anything to seal them without the ink bleeding
I brush a coat of traditional mod page down first, to prevent ink bleed, then use dimensional magic, and then seal again with spray acrylic sealer to hopefully extend the lifespan of the dimensional magic.
With hot glue, you need to leave it heating up for about 5 minutes and you need to get the clearest glue stick you can find at stores, it will work, you just need to make an outline of the shape with hot glue, wait for it to dry, then fill it in! It will work ☺️
For the hot glue, you should smooth it with a heat gun or hair dryer//plus I think your glue sticks is too opaque// after dip it into cold water so it'll immediately drys clear
Personally I love using embossing powder. It makes it shiny and rock hard. After shrinking my pieces I use a clear embossing ink in a stamper bottle by STAMPENDOUS, then use a spoon to sprinkle a moderate amount of CLEAR ULTRA THICK EMBOSSING POWDER by RANGER on top. I place it on parchment paper and stick it back in my toaster oven at the same temperature I shrunk them at originally. I keep an eye on them and just let it melt completely then remove from the oven and let cool. Mod Pogde does yellow over time and gets gummy if exposed to perfumes or fragrance oils.
another late reply from me! hopefully you see this :) what do you use to color yours? i use sharpie and am searching for something that won’t make the ink bleed :(
Nicole Long so sorry for the late response. I’m not sure about the acrylic. Did you try it? My only concern would be that it may melt, get bubbly or cloudy from the heat gun. If you try it I’d love to know how it worked out💗
Erin no worries😊 I like the printable shrink plastic. You can easily create your designs and print out a color version on the shrink plastic sheets. I get mine from Hobby Lobby and use a 40% off coupon from their website. I also use a basic inkjet printer. I’m telling you, if you’ve been coloring all your pieces by hand this will change your life💯 hope that helps 💗
I only ever use Ultra Thick Embossing Powder. It gets the perfect dome like that UV resin did. Plus it's not a liquid, so messes are super easy to clean up.
It's permanent, it's not going to peel or break off but it may slightly discolor and of course scratch up over time and use. I mean, anything is gonna scratch. I havent made many charms in the last year or so but the ones I have around here still look good! I have also since used UV resin and while it is very pretty and not too hard to use, doming with liquid resin is just not a skill I have and UTEP is much cheaper. I would still recommend it.
Just what I needed! I've been printing some charms on shrink plastic but it's the sealing/doming that's giving me a lot of trouble. Seems like UV resin is always a winner :D
You should try making 3D Shrinky Dinks by making different parts and gluing them together. For example, make a fish by making the body, then fins in the sides and a horizontal tail.
Question! I love your shrink plastics. but what do you think about printing designs instead of hand drawing/coloring them? I want to make a bunch and feel like printing them would be faster but wanted to know your thoughts on the quality
Thanks for doing this!!! I was curious on drying times and whether or not the methods were waterproof. I actually got into shrinky dinks and UV resin watching your videos. UV resin and I are not friends :( I do much better with 2 part ICE resin. The UV resin you use, pulls away from the edges for me. I've tried putting more resin and pulling as far as I can before it drips off the side. #struggles I've also had UV resin pop off my charms or turn color. Still trying to figure it out but I'm glad it works for you. My quest continues.... (I love my resin but figuring out how much to mix for projects or trying to do multiples before it cures is proving to be difficult. bleh)
I wanted to ask @Polymomotea this as well, when I add UV resin to shrink plastic charms, the resin portion just pops off, it doesn't seem to stay stuck to the plastic. I wonder if it would help if the plastic is first lightly sanded?
*@feliceskye* recommends this method: "Personally I love using embossing powder. It makes it shiny and rock hard. In all honesty, dealing with any kind of resin sounds toxic and messy... Anyway, I already have loads of stamping materials, so I am totally gonna try out *feliceskye* 's method! 😽
I have tried clear nail polish, but the brand of plastic I use requires for you to draw on the matte, course, textured side which means that when I try to dome it the first layer seeps into the cracks and you'll need at least two coats, it looks the best with three or more, so it isn't that good.
I've only tried the mod podge method before, and it doesn't even out very well. Like he said, it dips quite a bit, but too many layers makes it more opaque and less clear.
For the resin, did you use Sharpies to color your pieces? I've read somewhere that doming Sharpie-colored pieces with resin is possible if you wait for a couple of days to let the chemicals evaporate
With the hot glue I wonder if it would've helped to use a heat gun to melt the glue some. Though of course that would also mean that it would also soften up on really hot days.
Having clear hot glue sticks and a high temp glue gun would have better effects than the cloudy sticks you have in the video, but even then it's easy to scratch unless sealed so it wouldn't make a good dome regardless
Oh wow, this is useful! But should you dome both sides? And what is that insanely tiny mold you used to put the charms on?! Anyway, the charms you made are super cute! I liked the Butterfree one, in particular!
I'm new to this... what is the idea behind "doming"? What's wrong with using a Spray-On Sealant? Doesn't adding a lot of material make it much heavier? Thank you!
well.... if the elmers glue didn't work..... so how about the other clear glue..... do you think it can work.... can you try some and say it to me if its just the same as the elmers clear glue one.... 😊😊😊 i hope it can work.... 😫😫😫🙏🙏🙏
I tried to use resin ontop of a sticker that was laminated and the lamination paper would curl up- the resin ended up popping off too- but I didn’t even think of using shrinky dink 😫 I thought the heat of the uv would’ve shrunk it
I know this is a suuuper old video but what happens is you dome with resin a shrink plasti piece you draw with sharpies? I have tried another varnish and it smear the sharpie..
chocopandadeamor in the videos I have seen they usually use the frosted shrink wrap paper so one side they draw on then after they shrink, they go back and done it on the other side
That’s what I thought too but all the videos I watched they did that so I’m so confused. Another one of my guesses is that they just mod podged the backs then stuck the pins on it and flipped it over and put the dimensional magic over on top of the already glossy side for a 3D effect
does anyone know where i can get mod podge dimentional magic or uv resin as chep as possible from the internet?? they arent sold where i live but i really want to work with them! :(
korosensei desu i got a bottle of uv resin from ebay for $6 and it works wonderfully. it is coming from china so it does take some time to get to you. Like 3 weeks because of customs.
It's essentially just type 6 plastic (polystyrene), which, when heated up enough, will shrink and typically lay flat. Other types of plastics are either more toxic or less reliable to use for this kind of stuff.
tip for the mod podge: Dont put too many layers or too much because it will become cloudy.

Inkjet and Sharpies are both not recommended. You really need to stick to color laser or use an alchol-based pen like Copic markers
With hot glue, you need to leave it heating up for about 5 minutes and you need to get the clearest glue stick you can find at stores, it will work, you just need to make an outline of the shape with hot glue, wait for it to dry, then fill it in! It will work ☺️
Fascinating! I'm new to shrink plastic, so these were super helpful. I'm also interested in the tiny molds you used to support your 'test subjects'.
That hot glue one was disturbing to watch

true horror movie right there

@@iamnotallama5777 yeah, I was laughing so hard

I FINALLY found UV resin here in a daiso in TX, but it's been so cloudy since I bought it lol. can't wait to try it tho

feliceskye I know this is a late reply, but do you think that method would work with acrylic blanks as well? I’m hating the UV resin...😬

I use the same thing

Do You Get problems with the piece being flat, and then curling when the embossing power heats on it
@@Tiarah1999 Do You Get problems with the piece being flat, and then curling when the embossing power heats on it
The hot glue looks to be low temp, a high temp glue gun would work a lot better and be more fluid.
brikhouse22 Could’ve also worked if his glue gun had a fine point tip attachment and completely clear glue sticks. Hard to find, but worth it.
Agreed. My mom has an industrial glue gun and it probably would've worked really well for this :) Just don't let it touch you skin XD
@@heatherturner9286 you need to put it in ice water straight away. Completely clear glue sticks still get cloudy when used.

Yea but not all are cruelty free, and not good for respiratory issues

@Kimiko to dome with UV resin first brush on a layer of mod podge and yet dry. Then dome with resin. It doesn’t fall off

this is such a great video. thank you. i think ill get the mod podge glue instead
I have an industrial glue gun that goes up to about 300° Celsius. It may make the glue easier to work with!
What’s the difference between normal mod podge and dimentional magic? I just bought the normal mod podge one 😭 is it still can be used?
Did you apply these to the side you colored or the opposite?
