    This is helping me see which scale/arpeggio shapes go with the 1/4/5 progression moves at one position. Really helped!

    This is a simpler version of this Lydian Dominant thing that Jack Ruch plays on the IV in a blues. He had a cool video spelling it out. You can also play it on any minor one chord too. If you played that lick here it would be C# D E F A C# E G F. So it just adds in the E (9 of the Dm) and G (11 of the Dm) for some more color. They’re in the key but are color notes for the Dm chord in addition to the C# that’s outside the key.

    @Jeff McErlain more cool triad moves that apply to minor blues like this please; and if I wanted to understand the theory behind such things were would I start would that be chord substitutions?

      You’re welcome! First thing I would look at his chord scale harmony. Chords found in the major scale, melodic, minor, and harmonic minor.

    Nice one Jeff. Am I right in thinking this works over natural minor as well? E.g. playing a Bmajor triad over an E aeolian thing?

  • @davidcromwell6805

    This is VERY cool. Thanks Jeff!
    P.S. The transcription should have 9 (C#) on the top string, not 8 (C), in order to hit that A major triad.

    Maybe I missed something here, but if I play minor pentatonic and then add a major arpeggio from the V I find to at the b7 sounds really sour and is best omitted.

    • @JeffMcErlain
      @JeffMcErlain  2 месяца назад +1

      The natural 7 sounds a little more interesting but you could use the b7.

    Great video, Jeff. I'm still trying to absorb theory and love this sort of lesson. Isn't the C# also the 7th of the D Harmonic minor scale as well as the 7th of the D Melodic minor (ascending) scale? Thanks, Jeff :) Ahh, my bad. Harmonic minor has a Bb which is outside the Dorian scale, but is in the D Aeolian. I have a love/hate relationship with theory LOL

    • @JeffMcErlain
      @JeffMcErlain  2 месяца назад +1

      Ha! Yeah it gets confusing so as I said, see it as just using an A major triad! Easy.

  • @JohnHorneGuitar
    @JohnHorneGuitar 2 месяца назад

    Hey, what's the big idea making melodic minor so approachable, easy to understand, and apply??? Don't you know that melodic minor was created by jazz teachers in order to make everything more complicated and keep students coming back scratching their heads week after week? ;-)

  • @yakovest
    @yakovest 2 месяца назад

    Sounds like 5 to 1, not like melodic minor

    • @JeffMcErlain
      @JeffMcErlain  2 месяца назад +1

      V - Im is contained in melodic minor. If I’m thinking Dorian and raise the 7th to C# it’s melodic minor. If you don’t hear it that way is subjective, objectively it is melodic minor.

    • @yakovest
      @yakovest 2 месяца назад

      it is, when you use the scale or part of the scale but arpeggio pronounces dominant chord resolving into Dm

    • @JeffMcErlain
      @JeffMcErlain  2 месяца назад

      Right. Melodic minor. We are in agreement.
