I never liked fuzz pedals until I reached the stage of playing when I learned how to play with my amp on a higher gain setting and use my volume knob to clean up. After I got used to that method of tone tweaking a fuzz pedal became a totally different effect. With the volume rolled down you get that subtle fuzz warmth with that edge. You can play full chords and the fuzz mostly stays out of the way unless you dig in hard. Then you can roll up for that Hendrix violin tone for the big single notes that bloom. Just like you guys illustrated so well in this video. Another important lesson I learned that also applies with other effects is subtly. Subtle use of chorus, flange and reverb also make them so much more useful.

Many years ago, we were throwing out one of those old school tacky big screen tv's with speakers built into it. I believe it was either Josh Scott or one of Pedal Show guys that said that most fuzzes have a lot fewer components than other drive pedals, so as a result the way that all those work together matters a lot more. I think that applies to fuzzes as a unit as well. A specific fuzz has its own sound, but the guitar you have, the amp, the other pedals. All that affects how it sounds too, more than a lot of other pedals.
Still my favorite is a Fulltone SoulBender2 Version 2, it not only beats every other Fuzz for Maximum Drive, but it also cleans up gradually, not quickly like a FuzzFace. 2nd favorite is the Keeley FuzzHead, it has more options and the gradual cleanup as well. Great show, I always enjoy these type videos.
In the 70's I used a fuzz to get a dirty tone when I was playing through larger amps in a smaller gig. Now I can see they can even add nice tone to amps at the edge of distortion. Several of the amps I had back then only had one volume control and no input and master volume controls. Great video!
For me, there is something about Jazzmaster pickups that pairs so well with fuzz of any kind. Just amazing tone. Very volume knob and picking dynamics sensitive too 👌
This is the content we crave my guys! The overlap is the reason I watch multiple creators but get with the right guys abs be so inspired! Keep on keeping on my guys!
Dang, you guys have me wanting to start messing around with my nearly unused fuzz pedal now! I really enjoyed watching this and felt like we were all just hanging out jamming.
OK. I’ve never been much of a player to touch the volume and tone controls on my guitar, and I’ve not used fuzz much either as I’ve been a Les Paul straight into a simple low wattage valve amp type of simpleton. But I’ve just had a revelation with this fuzz stuff, both here and on the JHS channel. I just tried turning my volume down into fuzz, and it’s sounds amazing. Not that awful spitty gritty sound I’ve always associated with fuzz pedals. And my engineering background helps me make sense of it. Yes, the high end is rolled down when reducing the guitar volume pot but fuzz creates a bunch of harmonics. So when the guitar signal is darker, there’s more room in the high mids and highs for the new, distortion (fuzz) harmonics and there’s less high end in the original guitar signal to create those buzzy, harsh high frequency harmonics. Plus the number and level of harmonics is reduced in general due to lower level. So I’m getting these wonderfully balanced harmonics which are in the normal overdriven amp range, but still with the interesting part of the fuzz character - rather than that sound I expected, with high level harmonics going up to the sky and just marking too much of a mess for my ears. I can’t believe I’ve never experimented with this before!
The Behringer is the bomb, and is the only thing to scratch the itch until Boss gets off their butts and makes a Waza FZ-2 (c'mon Boss!). Matt Pike and Sleep/Electric Wizard in a box.
Fuzz makes a great old fashioned, 'Im going to get a good amp one day, but liked the old crazy horse sound' kinda noise. Perfect for a 'Rust never sleeps' cover band
Thank you for this video. Not going to lie, i have a serious “man crush” on tim anyway. He is absolutely my favorite guitar player and student of sound. And having rhett there is like having batman and robin show up to solve a mystery. Rhett is no slouch whatsoever. Having 3 of my favorite players in one video here on yt is a real treat. Thank you.
I used to have a caitlynbread fuzzrite by Mosrite. It was so rich and smooth sounding and really represented the sounds of the times from my youth in the early 70s. It got lost during my time in the Navy, I use the term lost loosely, more like stolen.
I like to think that a fuzz turned up doubles the strings relatively speaking. A heavy one string fuzz lick or riff has the power of double stops or two string power chords with an overdrive or something cleaner. 2 strings has the power more like 4 strings. Thinking like that helps me play less busy to keep a fuzz happy and not muddy up with chords that can't be as layered and still sound good.
I have a story of fuzz to tell... it was 1981 and my buddy Mike and I were young garage musicians with no money but, between us, we had a couple practice amps, two Ibanez lawsuit era sunburst les paul customs and Mike had a Howard Combo organ and a synthesizer. We wanted to record our jams so we got ahold of a used hifi cassette deck for home audio. When our amps were in the pawn shop, we would plug a guitar into the mic input of the cassette deck and play it through his cheap stereo receiver and his little hifi speakers. We were blown away by the fuzz tone we got that way. Unfortunately, we had to keep finding more cassette decks, because they died pretty quickly. We had no clue about impedences and all that geek stuff. 😉
I have 8 pedals on my board. 3 are fuzz, a muff, a super fuzz and a fuzz face, the boost is a line driver. Can't get enough of the stuff! The boost is after all the fuzz so I can account for any volume loss.
@@richardclark. yep 60 cycle is the reason I got it and tried it. It works. Just not my cuppa tea. Too bright. I found the triangle muff and it’s warmer. Fuzzier. I really like the videos where you're just talking about stuff, not just showing us how to so something on guitar. You seem like a really interesting person and I'd love to see more videos like this.
It’s fun to experiment with effects and try stuff out, not everything will appeal to you, but it’s fun to try And there are pedals that really suit one player that won’t work for another. So if a pedal doesn’t work for me, I don’t write it off for everybody, just isn’t my thing. Same if I love a pedal, I know it doesn’t work for everyone So my advice is to keep an open mind & try it out. (And while there are some cool sounds in this video, they don’t fit what I do, but that’s okay-if we all used the same sounds & pedals it would get boring.) Cool video.
I forgot about that Fender octave fuzz! I meant to try one out and then totally forgot they existed. The initial sales demos sounded great and I love what you guys did with it. Definitely going to have to play with one.
It had been YEARS (Okay... Decades!) since I had investigated the FUZZ in my Music. It's BACK!!!! I recently got the Keeley Fuzz Blender. Couldn't be happier.
I use a mkii type bender & dial it in by diming the level, then working up the attack knob til it hits a sweet spot, so that bit about turning the knobs toward one another was spot-on.
I've never owned a fuzz pedal, but when I noticed my Headrush unit had an Octavia-style effect, I thought why not try it out. Now I can't resist it. It's instant Hendrix, Trower, Gilmour heaven. Especially with a univibe added to the mix.
Always been a fan of the Fuzz...they recovered my stolen Mini Bike when I was a kid...I'm forever in debt to the Fuzz...oh wait THAT Fuzz...fan of that too!!
Rhett is the ultimate RUclips guest; I've seen him in Rick Beato videos, JHS videos...er...Musicals, Tim Pierce videos, & now Robert Baker. The guy gets around.
Paul Trombetta Effects RotoPlex is one of the best fuzzes I've ever played or owned!!!!! Insane amount of tones in those little boxes!!! (that and they are GORGEOUS in Old Map Mercury finish!!!)
That tip around the 7:00 mark on playing less with the fuzz is very helpful. I wouldn't have worked out myself why really dirty tones sound bad playing chords and double stops
LOVE fuzz! Folks that hate it are thinking closed minded while perceiving it as wide open and/or in-ur-face. So many great tones were crafted with fuzz. Fuzz requires experimenting and creativity. Some folks are afraid of challenge and don’t know what they’re missing out on
Dude that les Paul sounds so good any way you guys change it. That strat really shined when you Rhett had it set to be really chimey tho. I think that boss waza craft one was my favorite.
Ah holy shit, what a cool video!!! One of these for every effect!!! Seriously cool guys, also, chur Rhett and Tim for joining in! Also, Tim looked sold in the first 30 seconds of playing with fuzz 🤣
The Kingmaker is fantastic. It’s ridiculously customizable. One thing a lot of people do t like about fuzz is how much noise they usually make, but the Kingmaker has the best noise gate I’ve ever heard in it.
Behold brothers! We have witnessed the first recorded conversion into the way of fuzz! Blessed be the illustrious Rhett Shull and Robert Baker and their holly quest! And welcome brother Pierce! Get fuzzed!
The Behringer SF300 has a bit of a cult following in the doom metal and drone worlds, thanks to a band called Electric Wizard and and album they put out called Dopethrone. It's a Boss FZ-2 circuit. I'm surprised that you didn't do a deeper dive, it actually has a lot more to offer as a pedal. Mode 1 has a very scooped octave fuzz (true octave fuzz, due to harmonic interference in the gain structure, not an octave synth that is tracking a note). Mode 2 is more mid heavy octave fuzz. Mode 3 or "boost" is like the "Furnace Blast" pedal, where it just slams your amplifier with a near infinite amount of gain. Plus there are "secret modes" with the switch in between settings. I like the setting between 2 and 3
Every tone is useful in it's own way, it can make or break a song. I don't really use fuzz much, but it's fun and necessary in certain songs. I especially like it with added octave feature. Gets a cool Hendrix, SRV vibe.
I liked what I heard. And I had a couple bucks to spend. So I went to my local guitar store and checked out the fuzzes they had in stock in the range up to $120. I loved the Hammertone best, so I picked one up. I've played it all night. Next I'm going to take it to a local blues jam and see how it goes. I especially like the clean tones with the guitar at about 2 and the fuzz down low, and as a bonus I can finally get a really nice slide tone with a glass slide! I love how the notes sing. Thanks for showing all the awesome things you can do with a fuzz! Keep the music alive! :D

Glad you dug it Neal we will def be doing this again :)
Robert, Rhett, and Tim - great work on breaking down fuzz and pedal usage in general…cheerz peace and rock on 🤙
Dang, you guys have me wanting to start messing around with my nearly unused fuzz pedal now! I really enjoyed watching this and felt like we were all just hanging out jamming.
Thanks David :) get that Fuzz pedal out and riff!
In the mid-70s, as a Teen, I turned a Fuzz and a Distortion pedal up to 4 'o'clock, each. I got the coolest Frigid Pink, Iron Butterfly sound. 😬
I need to see Robert and Rhett have some dueling Firebirds. 😂
The Behringer is the bomb, and is the only thing to scratch the itch until Boss gets off their butts and makes a Waza FZ-2 (c'mon Boss!). Matt Pike and Sleep/Electric Wizard in a box.
Yeah I have that one and it's surprisingly good!✌️
Oh dude...you and Rhett just approach it differently. Like both your videos. Keep on keeping on!
Fuzz makes a great old fashioned, 'Im going to get a good amp one day, but liked the old crazy horse sound' kinda noise. Perfect for a 'Rust never sleeps' cover band
Great Collab video. I really like the budget Super Fuzz, and the Boss fuzz. Cheers from Canada
My buddy has a fuzz factory and the variety of fuzz tones and noises he could get blew my mind
Thank you.
18:15 Did Robert just name drop Big Wreck?? My favorite band!
Yes! Totally, I had to rewind and put in headphones, but he totally did. I love how all musicians know them haha
Thinking like that helps me play less busy to keep a fuzz happy and not muddy up with chords that can't be as layered and still sound good.
love the little bit of third stone from the sun !
Nice Robert! Love the nod to Scott Holiday in your opening playing! I love the boost on the Behringer Super Fuzz. What a bargain that pedal is.
Tim looks exactly like my first father in-law. And he's warm and kind like he was. Tim's a fav.
Fuzz in context is great, it can also help to mask a weak hand. But some artists use it too often
wow what surprise. I did not did expect to like this video so much. This is an excellent Fuzz tutorial.
Two thumbs up!
Here I liked the Fender Hammertone Fuzz and the Maestro. Those two sounded like something I want to check out.
I did the same thing years ago, fun stuff.
I have 8 pedals on my board. 3 are fuzz, a muff, a super fuzz and a fuzz face, the boost is a line driver. Can't get enough of the stuff! The boost is after all the fuzz so I can account for any volume loss.
I love that they bother to be standing during the whole demo. Fuzz is definetly very cool!
My favorite and only fuzz pedal I own and absolutely love… is my electro harmonix triangle muff. I had a cuvave fuzz pedal before… it was quite harsh
I love my thorpy fallout cloud.
I have a cuvave I was hepped to by 60 cycle. It's sweet but at some point they changed the circuit. And you have remember, it's a 20 dollar pedal.
@@richardclark. yep 60 cycle is the reason I got it and tried it. It works. Just not my cuppa tea. Too bright. I found the triangle muff and it’s warmer. Fuzzier. A little more costly but it’s a forever on my pedal board… and it’s more so like a transparent fuzz. It can go from filthy fizzy. To almost a warm OD just past breakup
Who doesn't love a good triangle muff?
What? We're talking about guitars? Ohhhh....
@@robertgransee8849 I meant the pedal pushing the guitar to the edge 😂 I own a strat and a les Paul. The triangle always gets the job done for fuzz. If I want them crunchy I’m going with my tube screamer
I really like the videos where you're just talking about stuff, not just showing us how to so something on guitar. You seem like a really interesting person and I'd love to see more videos like this.
It’s fun to experiment with effects and try stuff out, not everything will appeal to you, but it’s fun to try
And there are pedals that really suit one player that won’t work for another.
So if a pedal doesn’t work for me, I don’t write it off for everybody, just isn’t my thing.
Same if I love a pedal, I know it doesn’t work for everyone
So my advice is to keep an open mind & try it out.
(And while there are some cool sounds in this video, they don’t fit what I do, but that’s okay-if we all used the same sounds & pedals it would get boring.)
Cool video.
The effect I never want to stop playing is an octave. Now that’s fun
I use a mkii type bender & dial it in by diming the level, then working up the attack knob til it hits a sweet spot, so that bit about turning the knobs toward one another was spot-on.
This was great! I think we need this for more types of pedals!
That guitar volume at 1.5 thing was a little mind-blowing - thanks!
The second peddle really succeeded at making a strat sound even more like a strat.
Tim is my favorite. That guys a legend.
Kudos for tapping into Scott Holiday
I love me some Rival Sons!
Did not expect to hear a rival sons riff from you, great band!
One of my absolute favorites :)
@@RobertBakerGuitar great video too!
Rival sons indeed!
Some folks are afraid of challenge and don’t know what they’re missing out on
I love how fuzz is like the esoteric effect for guitar wizards
I remember that Super Fuzz sound. That was the night the speaker cone got a tear in it. We left it that way.
That 'good advice, kid' was just perfect
Love Roger Mayer`s line of fuzz pedals. Very musical pedals!
Well, this left me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Good work guys. I have always had a soft spot for octave fuzzes.
I like the setting between 2 and 3
"Play less to get more out of the fuzz". Well said!
Thanks! I'd forgotten what it was like to walk into a Guitar Center during the pandemic!
Speaking of Big Wreck the prescription electronics fuzz or the Suhr Rufus would have been cool. Cool video. Thanks.
Every tone is useful in it's own way, it can make or break a song. I don't really use fuzz much, but it's fun and necessary in certain songs. I especially like it with added octave feature. Gets a cool Hendrix, SRV vibe.
🤣 15 second into playing the Bender, Rhett Shull turns Robert Baker into Rhett Shull.
Thanks for the comparison. It's interesting that nobody noted the background gain "60 HZ hiss" on the pedals (humbuckers and single coils).
Shoegaze actually likes to sometimes use fuzz with big chord extensions, and it sounds really nice
My favorite new fuzz has to be the Park, followed up by the JHS Supreme.
This was my fave Simpsons, family guy, American dad cross over Ep ever 🤟🏻
You two guys rock man so cool to see you doing a video together. More please
Fuzz is fantastic. I am particularly fond of the Blackarts Toneworks pedals. I like tone benders, muffs and the Univox Superfuzz too. It's everywhere and one of the great unsung heroes of music.
