I still wish G1 had gotten a proper sendoff. Shriek Wrecked and the EAH crossover movie would have been so fun from what we got of them. You're definitely right about the writing around Lagoona being weird. It wouldn't be the first time G1 did that; Freaky Fusion absolutely dropped the ball with her because she'd already been revealed to be secretly a Hybrid herself and passing for a single type of monster, so she could have had so much more to do with the plot than just fuse with Jinafire and cause some funny background events.
I feel like part of the era for infinite reboots comes from the low budgets a lot of now long-standing/ culturally impactful media had at the time. It's like there's unlimited do overs on the surface, but it's really just businesses throwing darts at the board. But even all this time later, lots of stuff still has so much padding and poor pacing
I do like this movie as i do with every other Monster High movie but it's so flawed. I always had numerous problems with the film's message about forgiveness and morality. For one thing, every character is out of their usual personality, which leads to not just Lagoona but the rest of her friends acting unbearable. Lagoona used to be down-to-earth, chill, and kind, yet she was just a blubbering mess in this film. But also why was Lagoona demonized for calling out Torelai? She HUMILIATED Lagoona in front of the entire school and instead of her friends being supportive, they were watching memes of her, and were shocked at the party when they learned she disinvited Torelai. As if Torelai didn't deserve that? Lagoona was whiny and abrasive in this film yes but she didn't deserve to relive her trauma. It's also weird how everyone was forcing Lagoona to get over her stage fright, esp Posie who literally kidnapped Lagoona. Yes, exposure therapy works and holding onto trauma is not healthy, but neither is forcibly throwing someone into a scenario that obviously brings them immense anxiety and discomfort and making fun of them for HAVING that trauma? There are SO much better ways to deliver a message about healing and getting over your fears. Not to mention, Kala was just an emotional terrorist and it's messed up how Lagoona basically had to apologize to her first. "Oopsie you and your father tried to kill me and the entire school? Well join Monster High, we will accept your freaky flaws xoxo". I appreciate her redemption arc but if the Red Lady had to accept her punishment, then why wasn't Kala given one? Her cleaning up the school for damage SHE DID isn't enough for years of being a bully and abuser. I didn't like how Lagoona had to be the one to set everything straight just because Kala was jealous. Lagoona was actively being antagonized throughout this movie by pretty much everyone and it's just hard to watch. Even her friends felt useless except for that one scene where they followed her into the cave. She had every right to be upset by her humiliation and the writers act like she shouldn't be. Idk, it was a decent story but had sloppy messaging that's very face-value and victim-blamey.
@@KaminoKatie fr! and the movie acts like its her fault kala was jealous! i think maybe the writers wanted to deliver a story about moral ambiguity and how some bullies are justified in mistreating a person, but this movie fails at that because well obv, the movie shows that Lagoona did NOTHING to Kala. maybe if the story was changed to show Lagoona bullying Kala first, it would be understandable why afterwards Kala would be hostile toward her, but that didn't happen. Lagoona was always the victim. and Kala was an insufferable, envious brat and abuser.
