- I've been a massive fan of Steven Universe for almost 10 years now, and have always enjoyed hearing the thoughts and analysis of people who have more experience with digesting media and it's meanings than I have.
I've heard excellent points and criticisms from people who have wide ranges of opinions for the show and its qualities. But there is one video that continues to take up a huge amount of spotlight even ~6 years after it's posting. And it just...doesn't feel like it's engaging with the show in a way that is appropriate. Because of this, a lot of damage has been caused to the broader conversation around the show across the years, and I just wanted to share how I felt about that.

THANK YOU. I can talk about the steven universe criticism for daysssss. It genuinely pisses me off that some people think they're reading between the lines of a show and unrevealing a secret evil message when they just have no media literacy

I hate how one of the most impactful queer shows has been completely destroyed because one video makes me so mad. And people interacted with Lily's content in good faith because she is a trans woman.

Almost gave her some credit for at least making efforts to revise amd rebuke some statements made (most recent SU videos and some addendum pins in older comment sections), but these all more or less still kinda reek of bad faith, AND there's the recent Copyright Strike shit going on with @SaiScribbles and @AGramuglia , so I cut that out of the video. Very glad I did.
I've said it in a few places now, but I'm so happy that people have returned to SU and SU criticism now that time has passed. Not only has it let new people see the show with unpoisoned eyes, but it has also allowed people to look back on the criticism that poisoned the original discussions and see just how much of it was, AT BEST, truly awful media literacy, and at worst based in outright bigotry.
The Streaming Era looks VERY good on Steven right now. :) Whole new generation seeing the show for what it is, no hiatuses, and videos like these more or less buried compared to their original bursts of traffic and discourse.
I deadass didn't even watch Steven Universe or know anything about it before I watched Lily's video on it a while ago but I can remember just feeling so much resentment in every single nitpick and it just was dislikeable.
Like...no way a show can propel itself that much and we're still assuming the main show was so 2D and still had a following.
I dunno why 'critique' can't be 'critique' and is thinly veiled hate instead for these kinda people.
I’ve seen some comments from people who watched Lilys videos on Steven universe and those people hating the show along with her, but they didn’t actually watch the show and just hated it just because lily said bad things about it and Rebecca sugar. Then they actually sat down and watched the show, and they switched sides and now hate lily the same way we all do. Lesses to take from this just because some people say something about and show, doesn’t mean it’s true. Watch it for yourself to see if you like it or not.
The thing about criticism is anyone’s allowed to dislike or like anything. Unless your opinions are politically incorrect, no one should be able to take them away from you. Lily wants to get away from you. And her points at times are factually incorrect. Like if you were to say “Steven universe is bad” you’re not correct or incorrect. It’s a subjective opinion. If you say. “Steven universe is nazi apologist propaganda.” Then that’s just wrong. Because it’s an objective incorrect fact.

Lily Orchard’s video and hater boner for Rebecca Sugar didn’t just damage the perception of Steven Universe but probably online media criticism in general, disavowing the video or not, she hasn’t gotten any better.
Lily has always had bad takes, and not just with Steven Universe. Pretty much why along with her being the worse person ever is why I never subscribed to her, or bothered listening to her bad takes.

I have problems with Steven universe in terms of it's narrative, but Lily takes it to a whole different level. Like she called Rebecca a creep because of her statement regarding around puberty. While I believe that her take on puberty is cringe, I'm not gonna call her a pedo because of that.😡

The fact that Lily still tries to defend her takes on the show she *actively* ruined the reputation of *while trying to stir shit up with other shows/media using the exact same rhetoric* is so goddamn infuriating.
I'm so glad that people have been speaking up about Lily's video and others like it that tanked the show's reputation. I never liked those memes that popped up due to those like the whole "Steven Cries" thing or "Guess We Gotta Kill This Guy, Steven" (even if it led to a funny template for other characters), because they come from such a *hard* misread of the show/themes from an already disingenuous source.

Dude literally like.. ive been working on a video about her pokemon review. I really dont want it to be a drama video or something like i wabt to just interface with what she is saying but there is so many takes that are such bad faith i really wanna not even interact with. Like im tryint to be nice to her in the video and its so hard because of how many times she just complains about shit without even interacting with it
@@lettttuce I've dabbled with the idea of a response video for years, before even making this channel, and every time I started I stopped for two reasons:
1.) Wasn't very confident in my ability to say anything about it that was more effective or added more than other people provided with their responses.
2.) I had NO idea how to engage with the bad faith components of the essay in a way that would feel effective or meaningful. There's just so much...VITRIOL. How do you even get past that effectively without feeling like you're talking to a brick wall?
This video is a snippet from a [Stream] playthrough a few months ago. I had to cut out a LOT of moments where I start to get a bit heated and I stop myself from going on a tirade because I couldn't even organize it right. I hadn't seen the video nor the show in a while and I didn't want to go on a huge hitpiece rant while I was live. But it doesn't change how the whole thing has made me feel all this time. Shit's so weird man.

I also just don't even know how to approach it because I started my analysis of the video way before I even knew anything about her or that there was like an industrial complex of hate content about her. Like I don't want to make it about her but I know even if I don't it's still gonna target the audience that is already gonna cause drama about her. Hiding in Private I think is a good example of an essayist who pointed out her issues VERY directly without calling pointed attention to her name and reputation (outside of a more specific video, he kept the majority of his series on the show focused ONLY on the show.) I think that's a good one to follow.
Otherwise, just proceed in good faith. I started editing this video literally JUST before the strikes, and had to trim some stuff here and there to b keep my focus less on her and more on the broader point of media engagement. I didn't even want to name drop her in the title originally but her history legitimately contextualizes the conversation. There was a lot of thought.
Worry less about respect and more about just doing the best job you can across the board. If you approach in good faith, youll have a better outcime for your efforts to maintain that. In any case, your input is valuable, and you should absolutely make it!

My criticism of Steven universe. Humanity should have put more effort into war procurement as well as research and development. It would have been a season instead of four.

@ArbitraryDevCC here's where your wrong. It'll be a slaug, but humanity will win. Humanity will take a few loses, but those loses are vital Intel. That information will help humans adapt. If there's one thing we can do well is taking a mofo down. New strategies, weapons, and technology will be developed. Not to mention any and all xenos allies when humanity starts pushing the gems back.
@@Demolitiondude I think you're underestimating just how outclassed humans are in SU compared to gems. They're infinitely stronger, smarter, and more technologically advanced especially back during the war when humans had even less than they do IRL in terms of weaponry and general knowledge. Gems have teleporters, fusion, weapon generation, superstrength, elemental manipulation, shapeshifting, etc. We can also assume races stronger (and possibly smarter) than humans tried to resist colonization and were inevitably wiped out as gems had been doing this for eons all over the galaxy. Oh, and the Injector. Designed to kill a whole planet in like less than a day IIRC. This isn't even factoring in the Diamonds. There wouldn't be time to gather intel and develop weapons/technology 'cuz the whole planet would get colonized too fast. I can only really see a handful of humans getting lucky and maybe stealing a few gadgets lying around or from a gem they might manage to poof, like a Ruby or something.
@@commonbridge4735 you also underestimate the tenacity of humanity. We make cars to go 300 mph because we're bored. A lot of modern technology was from war time rush development. If the planet isn't proof enough, the human zoo colony would. Those were abductees. Violation of human rights in general. If we can speed run making nukes in ww2, the technology to destroy space rocks would be incredibly powerful.

I liked Steven universe, I thought a protagonist that tried to use communication and empathy to solve conflicts was cool, but I didn’t like how the diamonds were resolved. Cause they totally killed a shit ton of gems, people and other species but they receive zero justice. I might be over thinking this for a kids show but I just didn’t really like how Steven cared zero bits about that or insist on any sort of recompense.
Course lily orchard took her points to this weird hostile place of just pure psychopathic hatred that was extremely toxic.
I understand people that were largely dissatisfied with that. I do think that there was enough setup and justification to keep the Diamonds at least ALIVE, given the existence of the corrupted gems. Expecting a total redemption of their characters is a big ask for people who find it difficult to see past their crimes, but punishing them by forcing them to heal the corrupted gems (and rebuild previously shattered gems), I think was a reasonable choice for a conclusion to their arc given the show's cancelation/shortening.
@@ArbitraryDevCC I dunno I think some form of imprisonment would have been better. Sure they can magically fix everything but the diamonds killed a ton of humans in the gem war too. The fact Stephen really didn’t seem to care about that almost seems out of character

@@terrarianangel8274 I'm focused on cooking at least a month's worth of Shorts at the moment. I love making videos like these but they depend on the convos I have on [Stream], so they can come out pretty randomly with the time I have. The more people come in during the lives though, the more likely these are to happen so...🤷🏾♂️
