Some of the links above are to products I use or have used at some point and feel they are good enough to share with you. Some of these links may be affiliate links where I would receive compensation if you were to purchase them. The money earned from these affiliate links goes into making videos, just like this one. Keep in mind, I only recommend products that I’ve used and I believe will help others be successful with keeping a saltwater aquarium. Thank you for your support and Happy Reefing! Животные
My top way of saving money in the reef hobby was selling my tank! The gift that keeps on giving.
Saving Money with Reef Tanks is like an oxymoron. These are great tips but nobody can cure the addiction to buying bright, colorful, EXPENSIVE pieces of coral 😃
The idea is to save money for corals 🤑
@@MadHattersReef that's the spirit
@@MadHattersReef YES!!! Love it.
Excellent tips. Buying good equiptment is 100% true, I wasted so much money buying crap knockoff products that fail within 6 mos
👈🏻 Same here!
Plenty of dream tanks out there with no protein skimmer... just sayin.
I had to shut my protein skimmer off because zero Nitrate and Phosphate. Mixed reef.
Love it that's all I have on my current tank. Also started with a 14 gallon biocube. Had that tank up and running for 9 years before I got my 50 sca tank. Keep the info coming
Thanks for watching
Great video thanks so much for your information I’m new to saltwater and And learning is the best advice you can give a watch your channel religiously and I listen to your podcast and I learned so much to the point that I feel confident in my fish only system for now thank you again keep up the good work
Thanks for watching and listening!🍻
Great advice as always!
👍🏽 really great tips
Really good info. Going to reciprocate what you said also, spend on gear now, you’ll save later. Very true.
I’ve learned the hard way over the years.
Curing the dry rock to make live rock was great idea definitely gunna use the advice on next build
Very helpful as always
👍🏻
good content, well presented - new fan of the stream
Thanks for coming
Good work on this channel. You have been very helpful. How is that Maxspect Protein Skimmer working out for you ?
Loooovvvvvveeeeee it.
But the shipping of eBay would kill me
This might be irrelevant, but I now do maintenance on a 1000 gallon fish only tank.
I wish there were more posts on RUclips about how to do it.
It’s been a very interesting experience.
I’m a reef guy. Lol
What I end up doing is buyig one or two pieces of live rock and putting it in with my majority dry rock tank. It doesn't really look consistent for the first 6 months, but it'll all catch up. The main reason I bother with live rock is to avoid dinoflagellates by having a lot of things to out compete them.
Hey when trying to turn dry rock to live rock, does dry rock need lighting to become live?
Cool video
Where do you get the sponges to add to your dry rock?
I had some guys that went to fish stores to rob equipment to sell me for cheap, thats one way to save money 😂
😂
I think if your going to get in to this hobby you should get what you love
can i turn dry rock into live rock without any seeding?
He smashed it!!! He said save money😂 Now that’s funny. Some good tips though.
Save money... Reef better.
MISSED.. The smash the subscribe the subscribe button in the FACE! Haha
Starting with 30 gallon+ tank without skimmer
I have a question, does quarantine tank need to be cycled?
Hello?
I do a fishless cycle with Dr Tim’s one and only. Takes about 5 days to do so.
Ebay for corals has been fantastic and have got some insane deals and if they sell you a bad coral they will refund your money or ebay will take it from their account! I just bought 30 speckled kraks for 280 bucks! but the melted so wantnt such a great deal but he quickly refunded my money and I think one might make it! I got a small franekstein that wasnt as advertised and she refunded my money! Today I got a huge shipment of mid to high end zoas crazy cheap plus 6 or more polyp holy grail acan for 40 bucks! You just have to be smart and follow the peoples auctions and see who goes off cheap! LOL. You can easily check their sales history!
Great deals can be found
Hi Jeff
Hello
Are you from Pittsburgh
Nope. I've spent some time in PA though...
IMO, every dime you spend on Tunze products is worth it if you’re planning on sticking with reefing for years.
i'm sorry you took my comments and i believe one other about the fish in the coral tank as "drama." if you followed my second comment that i didn't realize at the time of the first post that your quarantine tanks had not cycled i was in full agreement with how you handled it. what i am NOT in agreement with is how instead of addressing it you just pushed it aside as "drama" you could have explained in better detail why you put them there and turned it into a learning experience. Maybe you were just tired. you have been burning the candle at both ends for months. anyhow, let's be friends and move on with the hobby related stuff. btw i have the same red reef tank and had the same issue with the piece they ship with the tank.
Yours wasn’t the only comment. Yours however, was one of the only comments that stayed. Ive never been against anyone disagreeing with me. Free speech or not, I’m not going to let folks be belligerent in the comment section. There are kids that watch my videos. The drama I spoke of wasn’t referring to your comment it was others that followed.
@@MadHattersReef fully agree bro. We do not want to discourage the young folk from getting into the hobby
Really glad the store is a success. You busted your hump getting it together and showed me conclusively why I will never do the same. Too much like work. I did steal a couple of your ideas when I put together my new frag tank
I’m in Philly. Hope to make it up your way.
I agree with some of this but I would have liked to see some other money saving options listed with regards to equipment.
For example, there are lights that cost much less than AI, Kessil, Ecotech etc. that are of good build quality, produce good results, last a long time, and cost much less. They may not have every single feature, but they produce and last.
Being a guy that owns and runs a business, I can tell you that the most expensive is not always the best, or, that the most expensive does not mean there are not cheaper options that produce similar results.
I will add that there really is no way to know what you are getting with Ebay. I would never purchase a coral that I can't see in person and control how it gets to my house and in what weather. I only buy coral from the many LFS'S near me.
Travis Kibel I agree that it is best to get corals in person but if you order from unique corals, WWC, cherry corals etc they’ll refund you if the coral doesn’t survive the trip. So they’re a good option...
@@seanradliff5710 All 3 you listed I know of and know that many people recommend them. I have never personally ordered from them because I really don't need to when I have several LFS'S that I trust near me that sell beautiful corals.
My main LFS is literally run by Reefers for Reefers and I trust everything they do. Each guy working there has more than 20 year's of reefkeeping experience under their belt and they are dedicated to that. There is not even a Freshwater section in their store. And I can get corals of any type from them for less than what it would cost from any of the three you listed.
With that said, I understand that there are people out there who may not have a good LFS near them and places like WWC are a good option regardless of their prices.
haven’t been in saltwater for 10 years ,explain please how buying a $1700 120 gal water box tank is saving money
That's irrelevant.
Ways to save money on your reef tank #11: Avoid Live Sales. You will give in to temptation during a live sale and will far exceed your original spending budget while shopping for corals. ...Not that I know from experience or anything. Who spent over 200 on corals when they only meant to buy one coral for under 50? ME!? I don't know what you are talking about. Now if you would excuse me, I have to go work overtime to make up for the money I spent..er.. didn't spend... totally what I meant.
🥴
A $40 plus shipping is not a way to save money on e bay!!!
You’re going to pay for shipping one way or another. In a lot of cases $40 doesn’t cover the cost of shipping.
best way to save money on reef tanks is to not have a reef tank
One way is not to listen to everything BRS says.
they have done a lot for the hobby
