  • Don't build up your BBEG only to have them fall in an anticlimactic battle due to the roll of the dice. Do this instead!

    I'm a new DM running a one shot campaign for my kids and a rotating cast of drop-in player characters. What I really like about this approach is that I can use the existing stat blocks and still scale the intensity of an encounter to suit the number of PCs during any given session.

    Such great advice, I learned to do this long ago, everything was more of a spectrum vs hard numbers and you could generally get a good gauge from the players on when the killing blow would be the most impactful, definitely requires reading the energy at the table though!

    I would recommend a much tighter range, but i think this is great. A low-hp monster is presumably either small, elderly, or already wounded, so the heroes would know it has fewer hit points than normal.
