Alan is the only man alive who I would spend 30 minutes watching a video of him putting together a squat rack.
It was a great video but I spent most of it fantasising about being able to afford one for my own garage.
I once worked in a gym that also sold gym equipment. It was my job to assemble the machines while also handling customers checking in. I once spent an 8 hour shift putting together a huge universal machine. Once I got to the end, I realized I'd routed the cables and pulleys the wrong way and had to undo most of the work.

What I genuinely value most about this video is how much more relatable it made you Alan. (not that you weren't already but even more so now) I've moved my squat rack and assorted home gym stuff through 2 PCS's now and it's been an experience reassembling EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Here in Western Australia we have a combo made by what used to be a local company that sadly wet out of business and split with everyone's money. It's exceptionally well-made - there is no need for those pins in the bottom of the safeties as they slide in and out with a much larger "tang". The uprights switch from in to out using a simple large pin, no fiddly cam mechanism that needs to bee loosened and tightened. The bench and the footplate are two separate pieces, the plate section drops into the rack, then the bench drops into guides on the plate section - this makes the bench a LOT easier to move around than having one bulky, heavy end hanging off it. It's very simple, yet not deficient in any place, being made out of really thick-gauge steel. Having now seen a bunch of other combos in my time, I wish more companies took their time to design them better, given the exorbitant cost of the things.
We recently got a cheap one from "Catch Fitness" and there was a catch... the first time we used it, a small amount of weight on the bar BENT the support arm for the lever, deforming the upright that the post slots into and jamming the post inside of the upright such that it would no longer mover up and down. The pins that came with it weren't long enough (and the lever prongs were too wide) and the rollers were both nylon and too deep. Getting in and out of it was a pain, as Alan mentioned about the wider versions (threading the needle in terms of not hitting the plates). Thankfully my training partner got his money back.

The barbell will definitely feel and show the wear from the steel rollers. I found that it doesn’t matter because I don’t use the knurling out there anyway.
Yeah, just use powerbars and keep the weightlifting bars away from those racks and everything should be fine.
No. The barbell is made whit a MUCH HARDER steel than the rack's type
Sure. What I’m referring to is wear on the knurling. Regardless of the hardness, the knurling will show wear over time (as that part of the bar contacts the metal rollers). Ghost sells a composite roller to help prevent this but the bar doesn’t glide over the composite roller as nicely as the metal.

Yes, it is easier (but longer) if you unscrew the crate. The wood inside the holes is Mahogany :) Enjoy your new equipment!
The steel rollers that you got will over time ruin the knurling.

I have try the new eleiko compo rack on a competition and it was amazing it might be light but they make a new feed for the rack and it doesn't shake or move but for sure you can't use band's

Every damn time. Put it together, realize something is funky at the end, then have to disassemble the whole thing and start over from the beginning.

2:39 I wonder if the fact wood can swell, shrink, or even creep over time depending on local conditions (such as humidity) will ever result in that being a problem
My assumption is it is a very weak wood, possibly even balsa, so that if it did expand it would just crush itself before effecting the metal. BUT this is a good question and not something I would have thought about before.
I was thinking the exact same thing: "What a great solution to the annoyance of pin-fiddle, unless that wood expands..." But maybe they left enough gap for expansion. I was then wondering how the wood was secured inside the post if it had gaps.
They're just clearence holes... The wood could be press fit in and because it's on the bottom, it won't go anywhere. Wood isn't expanding as much as you think it does 🤪
@@urgamecshk Over time, a press fit would not be enough. Our combo gets a lot of use and abuse - I would expect constantly dropping the uprights with any degree of force, combined with any degree of expansion and contraction (and this can be quite a lot, depending on the type of wood and the moisture in the environment) it could come loose. Just welding a little tab of metal to keep it in place would probably be enough, though.
