Congratulations on being the first RUclipsr (that I am aware of) to mention the CTCSS feature, and certainly to actually demo it! This is a great feature that President dropped the ball on with their Randy II (USA) CB ht. The Randy III (Euro version) has CTCSS, but apparently President thought we Ameros are too stupid to make use of this wonderful feature.
My Ham Radio interest got started when my Canadian cousin gave me a set of those Archer Space Patrol walkie talkies and a crystal set kit. I had done some SWL but this made me decide to get a licence. I had to wait till I was 14 as we had an age restriction. 40 years later I am still doing radio. GM4SVM.
Fun to see the Fanon handheld, my first handheld was a pair of these I got for Christmas sometime in the 60's, lots of fun and I still have them. Hard to think of them as "antique" instead of just old. I guess the difference is in being collectible not just old, where as I am old but not at all collectible. I enjoyed the audio clip of what you could hear, straight out of the 70's.
I think you could use the Argent Data ADS-SR1 Simple repeater module for these since these KG-S72c have a separate mic & speaker out plug. You'd need to DIY a cable (not that difficult). For those who don't know - simplex repeaters work a bit differently. Sort of like a message playback machine. Put the Simplex repeater up on your roof and easily triple your distance.
Total guess here based on my day job as an analog design engineer for ADI: The reason you’re given four watts on FM but only two on AM is probably because the RF is likely coming from some kind of I,Q chip. Low level modulation. Every stage after has to be linear for AM but they can use class C for FM. Just a guess.
I think the 2W spec for the AM mode is the measurement for the carrier only, not including modulation. If you include the modulation then the total is more than 2 W. It has nothing to do with I/Q, which is the digital data representation of the wave form. Unrelated completely.
Hi Josh I have a Midway 75-822 and when the sun is setting here in brazil i hear a lot of US citizens talking on CB. For use at places that frequent trucks would be my best use idea. Would be nice to have an option other than the uniden wireless mic for out of truck comms or a a loader / spotter truck even. I could also see it being something to keep in the glove box when pulling a camper out other large contraption when parking or say boat launching. Many ways something can put this to valid use but I don't see DX as an option with this thing. Superbowl6 has users in excess of 15kw output power so yea. No telling of he was western us badlands or foreign lands.
I have both the S88G and the S72C. I would love to see a ham variant using the same batteries and IP67 of the GMRS variant. That way I’d have a whole set with interchangeable batteries and familiar interface-an advantage of all the UV-5R variants.
Josh, did I just hear you throw out your ham callsign over CB? You have just confused a whole bunch of truckers, LOL. Good demo on the new radio and service.
I have had for a very long time an old Realistic TRC-218 2 watt CB handheld that has 3 channels (crystals) and a telescopic 3 ft antenna. 10-15 miles base to handheld was easy, and I've talked DX with it. A better antenna will transform those things.
LOL at transmitting your ham call sign! The correct way to test your CB radio is to yell in a Southern accent BREAKER BREAKER [CHANNEL] WHO'S GOT THEIR EARS ON? THIS HERE'S THE BIG BAD DOGGIE, COMIN AT CHA WITH 5000 WATTS HOW DO YOU COPY OVER?! then just hold the key down for a good 5-10 seconds.

15:50 yes its possible. Baofeng repeater box. But its not legal. And you don't have much bandwidth between bottom of cb band, and top of band. So desensitization would be bad without a duplexer. Out of band would be interesting. Still not legal. But from 29.6 with ctcss to a repeater would be awesome
Judging by the size of those "dummy load" short helical antennas, I am willing to bet that a 100 mW antique Radio Shack portable with a six foot metal whip would give you better transmit range. I do love the feature set that going FM will give you, its years overdue in coming....WA2JNF
Pretty silly to do more than a few watts in a handheld anyway... wouldn't make much of a noticeable difference until you get, say, +6dB or so, and holding 15-20W in your hand gets crazy.
You can put a store Ford repeater on CP. I have my HF radio modified. I tried it on 27.245 which is channel 24 on FM. It worked pretty cool. I love my KGS 72 handheld CB. I wish there was a way you could modify it to make it going into 10 m but I don’t think you can. 17:06
I wish that radio was able to do side pain and also be modified to go on 10 m. Is that possible I have that radio Correction, I wish that radio was able to do single side band
Nice Walkie-Talkie, yet pricy. Once they drop to half the price, I might get one, or 2. Kinda funny though, when I started out as a CB'er at age 12 (many years ago), I had a 12 channel AM/FM base station with 0.5W. I grew up in Germany, so FM was introduced to CB in the early 80s with the plan to abandon AM entirely. So my next CB radio was a 4W 22 channel FM only device - very fancy. And then later I had a 40channel FM/12 channel AM radio with 4W on FM and 1W on AM. Now Germany allows 80 channels on FM, but still 12 channels (4-15) on AM with 1W. So this seems like a revolution
I think that transmission at the end of the video is from Texas. I remember hearing him years ago when I had a cb base station in CT. He's probably running a very high power linear Amp, in the range of 1,000 watts.
I would have liked to see wouxon come out with one with/AM FM SSB. That will be awesome that would be complete as well Mars cap a few uppers and lowers
My Magnum 10/12 can theoretically do FM and AM on the CB band with the channel mod. I also have a mobile that can theoretically do FM but not AM on the CB band. In theory 😉
I'm torn between Randy II, Wouxun, and Midland 822. The lack of AM features and not being able to select 4 watts is disappointing. But the form factor is so nice. I honestly might still buy it. Menus are real close to a Baofeng. I like it so far.

8:14 every time I transmit on license free band (325 MHz to 325.4875 MHz in PH) I have this audio problem with my cheap unbranded mixer console that has a plastic body. What do you recommend me do to fix this?
I'd like to hear more about your thoughts on FM CB vs. GMRS and FRS. We have a farm with woods where we hunt. Cell reception isn't always great and our little FRS radios don't always work the best. I know I could go with a higher powered GMRS, but then everyone involved technically is supposed to have a license (Not going to happen) and it seems that a 4 watt FM CB would get better range given that it's HF and can better pass through trees and such. Am I right about that? Thanks!
Since you brought t up… In an emergency (because this would break all sorts of FCC regs) it would be possible to use two of these together to increase range. you could set one up in a vehicle connected to an external whip antenna. It has a standard K type connector, so it would be easy to hook up a Surecom simplex parrot repeater. When one transmits on the rubber duck equipped radio the unit in the vehicle would receive the signal and then re-transmit it using the much more efficient whip antenna, greatly increasing the range. Do-able? Sure. Legal? Not so much. And probably not worth the bother IMHO. But in an emergency it would work.
@@RKingis yep, but they have a lot of names . The FCC refers to them as “parrot repeaters” because they don’t have to be simplex. I have mine set up to operate duplex, just with a gap between receiving and re-transmitting. But you are right. They are generally referred to as simplex repeaters.
a person on fm can connect to the citizen's band easily. which is a huge plus, I don't want to have a radio that doesn't. because I'm amateur radio, am, fm, lsb, usb, and that fm. allows me to talk home.... I would like to see a walkie talkie accessible with am, fm, lsb...
I heard from a guy once who said that someone told him that he heard from his friend that, it's arlready only doing 2 watt output on AM. It's good to go... The radio doesn't really matter, what happens to your signal after it leaves your radio is what is important. But Hey, that's just hear say....
The antenna would be too much of a drawl back to overcome for any real chance of DX. However If I were to hook it up in place of my Galaxy that little radio would smoke !
I hope we do get them in Europe soon, too. We have had AM/FM CB for decades. But most CB handhelds look and feel vey outdated (big packs of AA batteries and such). Please release a model with 40AM/80FM for Germany! Interesting channel, just passed my HAM exam last Monday. 73 / DC6CK
I have a configuration file you can program into the radio that includes the 80 German channels. I have also included multiple AM and FM 10m simplex and repeater pairs. Let me know if you want it. -Wes VE7WDM
hey josh you should try the Hyflex CL 27 with bnc connector,it works on all band fm,am,and ssb its a hand held cb antenne its 54cm long and it works really great i own the albrecht ae 2990 export its a cb handheld it do every mode and you can do also 10 meters with it and 12 and 11 meters if i remember correcly
The President Randy II FCC is another CB walkie that'll do FM. Also, the FCC has pretty much abandoned CB radio enforcement, they only do something when someone's transmitter interferes with hams or something like tv or commercial radio or government broadcasts. Otherwise they'll let people mind their own business on CB.
Randy and Randy II don't do CTCSS, however Randy III does. Randy III is only available in Europe unfortunately. If you get the opportunity to pick one up I'd say go for it, it has modes to operate on the standard US CB freqs so it'll work with other CBs just fine.
Qyt makes a cb -58 but I bought 2 of them and both of them are horrible on transmitting. They both sound like there way out of aligmant. And distorted . I like the unidens . And all the new radios are hexi decimal compiled and software driven or they have a internal service mode to change things. But there set from the factory. Cause on cb you need clean loud audio. And I was able to turn up the audio and modulation on my uniden. But Wright down the factory numbers incase you mess up. Btw I have heard of a mod for the wouxun 950 p moble to go on 27 mhz so you can use that radio to Crossband. But only one radio will excite the moble on cb and the other one on ham or vhf or uhf depending on how you set it up.
About a tie. FRS can talk back and forth with GMRS on simplex and hear GMRS repeaters down links if close. The thing I hate is FRS has preset CTSCC/DCS that needs to be canceled or changed if talking to outside the circle radios. CB you might be able to talk to truckers. Truckers with CBs on is getting very scarce.
I have a question I've only had my license a couple of months and I know a little bit about 2 m I know a little bit about 10 m 6 M 70 cm and most of my radios right now are 2 m and 70 cm I know that there's more but my question is is 2 m a good radio to talk couple hundred miles on simplex can I talk a couple hundred miles or is it just close range
That radio is not FCC certified. it has the usb to allow extra channels that are illegal to use in the US. It also might be a spatter box and cause harmful interference to other services. Check it our carefully before purchase for proper FCC type acceptance. I would recommend the new president Thomas which is FCC certified.
Hi Josh, I'm interested if that HT can do EU standart CB channels. Last what I read about it wasnt possible to program via SW. Can you figure this out? Thanks for your content mate
I can make you a configuration file for that if you'd like so you can program it into the radio. Just give me the frequencies and I can create it. -Wes.
As they sit stock for stock. Likely no. The antenna is too compromised. It needs a good telescopic and then hypothetically. You could get much further than FRS/GMRS.
Hey Josh I order one of these as soon as I saw this video and it came today. I know there are only 40 citizen band frequencies but the radio can hold up to 400 channels in memory. Are there any other frequencies that can be listened to on this radio?

My President FS-T1 CB radio has both AM and FM with ASC one other menu selections.
GW6BXU your opinion on aluminium being conductive lol
Right on. Thanks.
Cool lil’ radio!
Gotta have the Roger Beep... NotARubicon would be proud... lol
8:14 every time I transmit on license free band (325 MHz to 325.4875 MHz in PH) I have this audio problem with my cheap unbranded mixer console that has a plastic body.
What do you recommend me do to fix this?
Josh needs a CB handle. Any suggestions?

I'd like to hear more about your thoughts on FM CB vs. GMRS and FRS. We have a farm with woods where we hunt. Cell reception isn't always great and our little FRS radios don't always work the best. I know I could go with a higher powered GMRS, but then everyone involved technically is supposed to have a license (Not going to happen) and it seems that a 4 watt FM CB would get better range given that it's HF and can better pass through trees and such. Am I right about that? Thanks!
I have a video on that.
Since you brought t up…
In an emergency (because this would break all sorts of FCC regs) it would be possible to use two of these together to increase range. you could set one up in a vehicle connected to an external whip antenna.
That's called a Simplex Repeater.
Saw an article on how to hex edit To add 10 m freqs Also needs a vco retune if i remember 👍🏻✌🏻
What exactly is the hate towards the roger beep??
how do you modify it for more power??? Same way you do with literally EVERY OTHER RADIO........replace it's finals with larger ones.....
Hi This Is VU3 YWB From India..Let me know How Long This Radio can work? Range limit if any?
maybe use them with the little repeater you showed once in your bag? that will be pretty cool
THANK YOU,, DES IN BELFAST ,, IRELAND
It would be great radio if it has ip68 additionally
I heard from a guy once who said that someone told him that he heard from his friend that, it's arlready only doing 2 watt output on AM. It's good to go... The radio doesn't really matter, what happens to your signal after it leaves your radio is what is important. But Hey, that's just hear say....
I know that guy!
But yes, the antenna in this regardless of quality is a massive compromise.
Agreed. In this humble persons opinion a hand held is but a toy. Like you said Fun for the Family!
-Wes VE7WDM
How long is battery life
hey josh you should try the Hyflex CL 27 with bnc connector,it works on all band fm,am,and ssb its a hand held cb antenne its 54cm long and it works really great i own the albrecht ae 2990 export its a cb handheld it do every mode and you can do also 10 meters with it and 12 and 11 meters if i remember correcly
I want one… and I don’t know why!!!
So can it transmit ?
The President Randy II FCC is another CB walkie that'll do FM.
Also, the FCC has pretty much abandoned CB radio enforcement, they only do something when someone's transmitter interferes with hams or something like tv or commercial radio or government broadcasts. Otherwise they'll let people mind their own business on CB.
Does Randy do CTCSS tones?
Randy and Randy II don't do CTCSS, however Randy III does. Randy III is only available in Europe unfortunately. If you get the opportunity to pick one up I'd say go for it, it has modes to operate on the standard US CB freqs so it'll work with other CBs just fine.
Qyt makes a cb -58 but I bought 2 of them and both of them are horrible on transmitting. They both sound like there way out of aligmant. And distorted
These are nice HT tbh
Would these be better for family things than FRS if someone doesn't want to deal with GMRS licenses?
About a tie. FRS can talk back and forth with GMRS on simplex and hear GMRS repeaters down links if close. The thing I hate is FRS has preset CTSCC/DCS that needs to be canceled or changed if talking to outside the circle radios. CB you might be able to talk to truckers. Truckers with CBs on is getting very scarce.
Would this be a decent replacement for my trucks cb?
I wouldn’t say it’s a replacement.
Now... will it do 10m fm and -100 khz shift?
Yes. I have a file that I created with the FM repeater pairs in it.
Shout out to the spider at 2:40.
It’s just close range. You’d need to consider getting an hf radio for getting up to hundreds of miles.
That radio is not FCC certified. it has the usb to allow extra channels that are illegal to use in the US. It also might be a spatter box and cause harmful interference to other services. Check it our carefully before purchase for proper FCC type acceptance. I would recommend the new president Thomas which is FCC certified.
Where are you getting that info from? I’m curious to check it out.
-Wes.
Would these work better in mountainous areas better than GMRS/FRS?
As they sit stock for stock. Likely no. The antenna is too compromised. It needs a good telescopic and then hypothetically. You could get much further than FRS/GMRS.
Hey Josh I order one of these as soon as I saw this video and it came today. I know there are only 40 citizen band frequencies but the radio can hold up to 400 channels in memory. Are there any other frequencies that can be listened to on this radio?
No, not without moding it. The channels are there for setting different tones, etc.
cute Josh to bad they don't do sideband!
They are sold out. I will check later, looks like a nice radio to have on hand.
They should be back in stock today.
They are in stock and I ordered one
Roger beep sounds like Morse code lol
