- We did it folks! Jurors for Trump’s hush money trial are getting to read their resistance tweets to his face as Meta’s crackdown on news is slowly asphyxiating conservative media. Jon and Max celebrate the good news, and then dive into the much more somber topic of dating in the Internet Age. It turns out Gen Z is abandoning dating apps in favor of social media and the “old school” approach of meeting people in person. Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

When Government is done right, it's boring. Policies are passed that work. Bridges get built instead of falling down. Ambassadors prevent WW3 on the weekly without making it public.
Boring doesn't get clicks.
Great insight.
I've told my friends who were non-political that very thing for decades. I've always followed politics the way other people follow sports. But I've told people that they shouldn't HAVE to follow politics on a daily basis. You should be able to elect people who want to govern responsibly and then get on with your life. If you have particular issues you care about you might watch it more but you should not have to be kept in a constant state of worry and anxiety.
True.
That’s why the left forced so much on Trumps Tweets.
Yep. We definitely live in exciting times don’t we.
I hope for boring government. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during these trying times.
My brother in law lost 3 sisters to CF. His brother worked for American Airlines and together they had celebrity ski and celebrity golf and raised millions over the years and we like to think they contributed a lot to the ability to find a cure❤
They absolutely did. Each individual dollar is important and each event is equally so in getting the info out to people. 💜
Sad and amazing 👏
In the 1970’s I worked at a summer camp for children with cystic fibrosis all summer. This is such a miracle and a gift to hear about this new drug. For years, as my husband came back from Viet Nam, and I began my adult life, I wrote back and forth with my young campers as they faced end of life experiences, and they spoke/wrote about their expectations. I actually have no words for this miracle. 😅
Bless you --

Hooray for science! I needed that Jenny Livingston interview to start my day. So happy for everyone affected by cystic fibrosis.🎉
I was so interested in Jenny Livingston's story. You see, I had a first cousin named Laird who had CF. He was younger than me. I am now 75 years old. When Laird died at 9 years old he was the longest living CF patient at Detroit Children's Hospital. That is how much treatment and life expectation has changed since the early 60s. So Jenny's story makes me very sad for the loss of my sweet cousin and his struggle which I remember well, and happy for Jenny and the life she has and that she can look forward. Thank you, Max for doing this interview.
I'm presently training at what is now called the Children's Hospital of Michigan, still in the heart of Midtown Detroit! It's true and amazing how far things have come, and always important to know our history and where we come from to not repeat the mistakes of the past. I'm very sorry for your loss. Such people always continue to live on in our memories and sharing their stories is celebrating them!
@@lawrencetchen, thank you for that. It was a very long time ago, but my little cousin was very close to me. He was one of the bravest little boys I've ever known.
What an amazing interview. There's plenty of problems with the pharmaceutical industry but groundbreaking discoveries like this is a reminder that there are people doing amazing work.
As a long time surviver of HIV/AIDS (since 1986), I can certainly identify with rethinking the future! So glad that cysistic fibrosis sufferers can now do the same! 😁
🙏🏻💙👍
I had a friend that was a long-term survivor of HIV/AIDS (but as long). He was a healthy man until he suffered from life altering injuries. 🎉
I hear you! Going on 40 years!
To borrow a line from Mr. Spock, "Live long and prosper."
Thanks for adding this. I'm not poz, but I know many LGBTQ folks feel the same way. We are surrounded by death and hopeless so often that it's almost like a shock if we get to a point where we realize "I might just make it, what now?"
So happy to hear good news on the CF front.
Hate and anger are always bigger drivers of the algorithm. It’s the outrage industry now. Journalism has taken a back seat. People are exhausted. Normal people anyway.
Well said. 👏
“If it bleeds, it leads” was a saying long, long before the ‘algorithm’
In the first minute I didn't know why we were hearing from Jenny today. But at soon as the interview started I was in tears with joy. So, glad you guys talked to her!
How amazing 👏. I worked with CF children in the 70s at a children's hospital. Back then, they rarely lived to be teenagers. We saw them often, knew them well, and watched them literally drown in their own secretions. This breakthrough is absolutely astounding.
😢
So few care.
Bless you. 👏
This guest is amazing. As a healthcare provider it warms me. Their lives are hard. So happy the progress has been made with CF. It’s a horrendous disease. My childhood friend had it. We lost her, 🕊️ she made it to age 42 and was on the transplant list for years. 🙏🏻💙
💓
My 1st patient in Nursing school had CF. I know 🕊
I just read the article and the medication is $25,000 per month! 😳
And you have to take it for life.
"Doubts like these crept into the minds of many people on Trikafta, too. What if the new drug stopped working? Or had horrible side effects? Or stopped being covered by insurance? Trikafta’s sticker price is more than $300,000 a year. Insurance typically covers most of that cost-minus what can be significant co-pays and deductibles-and Vertex offers co-pay assistance. But patients’ lives ultimately depend on decisions made by nameless bureaucrats in rooms far away: Insurance plans can suddenly change what they cover, and in 2022, Vertex announced that it would substantially reduce its financial assistance."
Wonderful, wonderful news.
Kudos to medical research on the great progress made on cystic fibrois. Hope they can do the same for cancer.
They are doing but cancer is a generic term covering a lot of different effects so it is a bit here and a bit there. There never will be a magic pill for all cancers.
I’m so glad Jenny will be around for a much longer time! She’ll be a positive influence on all that hear her optimism.
One thing missing in the dating app convo is the overwhelming amount of scammers and catfish on dating apps. Like everything else these days, it's not just the apps trying to take all your money and self respect.
This is a great podcast. I am so happy for Jenny. I hope her good health continues
I’ve had Epilepsy for 30+ years. About 5 years ago I was put on a new drug that has changed the seizures significantly. The experience you describe is exactly how I feel. I think you speak beautifully for all of us living with chronic conditions that get those life changing meds.
The "ones who have checked out from the news" does define me. I did away with Facebook and only open Twitter to look at the cat accounts that I follow anymore.
I found myself so burnt out by how toxic and polarizing all of the political drama around every corner that it was worth dumping most social media.
I've friends who still very much have their fingers to the pulse of everything but I find myself out of the loop for the most part anymore. And happier for it.
Yep, I bailed on Twitter ages ago, though to be fair, I never really used it (never deleted my account, so for all I know, someone's posting as me now), Facebook I only use to post my fractals, goof around on Reddit a bit, but never got used to any of them. I'm old though, I was playing on Usenet when _I_ started "online", so I think I just burned out on it...
This said though, I haven't turned away from the news, I just tuned out the bubble, and look at everything. I figure the most objective I can be, is to look at the aggregate of all of it, doing that, makes it still pretty obvious which "side" makes sense. You get a clearer picture of the contradictions and loony logic, and just downright madness the right in America is trafficking in these days when you see it all at once.

@@PatrickGann Thing that really makes me sad even with such a huge hopeful story here is, "How much more progress could we have made in so many areas if we didn't have to keep fighting the insanity of racism all the time?"
Thank you so very much for introducing me to Jenny LIvingston. 💞💞💞💞💞💞After listening to Jennie, she sounds just like the kind of person I want to join my profession. She's very professional when she said the client is the focus of the social worker interaction, and any anount of self-disclosure is only for the benefit of the client AFTER a social worker knows enough about the person's who is the patient, as well as their caregivers whether familiy or friends. I was also a hospice social worker. It is incredibly rewarding work.
You need to have Jenny on again! What an excellent guest! I’m watching this the night after my five year old nephew was admitted to the ICU and while he’s currently in surgery draining an infection in his head and having tubes placed in his ear so her uplifting story which was so well spoken and vibrant was exactly what I needed to hear today! I lost a part of my skull in 2012 from an infected cranial shunt so hearing he had an infection in his head scared the hell out of me but the docs at Massachusetts General are being extremely proactive in the first 24 hours he’s been there after the first solution tried by his pediatrician failed.
Where is SNL skit on juror's sitting through their own tweets with trump and lawyer? Would be hilarious!
She is great. Very intelligent and a perfect guest telling all by herself. Storys out of her family life. Old life, new life. Daily thoughts. Happy for her 🥰
Interesting, and as if it happens by design, you are 4 years better and your story in the media and people think you feel good the moment you have symptoms again.
I had a foster child with CF. This new drug is working wonders for him.
One of my dear friends lost a teen daughter to CF, I so wish she had learned of this, unfortunately she died last October. 💕
She's such a sweet person. It's really gripping what she went through, love her joyful vibes - all the best to Jenny.
Today's program was excellent.
Beautiful interview! Yes I’m living with a (non-fatal) debilitating chronic illness which has actually made me able to experience much more joy in moments that used to just go by. I imagine if there was suddenly a cure or enough of a change so that my life could look different… I can see I might have some anxiety and grief just facing the unexpected change in the paradigm of…living! Great reflections which will stay with me💙
CF is brutal. Had a friend that died at 16 in the late 1980's I spent alot of time in the nurses office and saw the treatments. Back then they pounded on CFs back every day. Poor thing was drowning. One time at lunch she started coughing and a bucket of fluid came spewing out. It was brutal. So glad they can live longer and more comfortably.
My nephew’s daughter died two years ago from CF at the age of 16.
Jenny is a great reminder of how important it is to live in the moment. ❤
All the best, Jenny.

Wow! What a beautiful guest! We could all learn so much from her.
I'm 62 now, ex and I split up years ago, the dating thing is just out of my reach these days, mostly because "this" imo, is not really an attractive package to offer someone. Full-time caregiver, although attractive from a "oh isn't that nice, he's caring for his mother" standpoint, that's about it, spent a lifetime avoiding dentists, haven't the time or money atm to fix it, always a deal breaker, and etc etc etc. This being said, I missed out on so much when I was younger being "shy", this is the thing that sucks about getting older, you figure out things were WAY easier than you thought, and now you've got it all figured out, you're too old to do anything about it. It's so easy now that I don't really want it, it's ridiculous, here's the secret to talking to that stranger: observe the situation, and talk about it, that's it, if you can also make it funny, it works nearly every time, and when it doesn't, it's usually someone you wouldn't want to talk to anyway.
Use that good advice for yourself.
34 years ago, I moved from CT to AZ, my "superpower" was believe it or not, AA, it was like having an instant peer group. I'd recommend it to _anyone,_ you don't _have_ to be a drunk, just say you're not sure, I found cars, roommates, apartments, my ex a d I met there. Remember that Jack Lemmon movie "The Days of Wine and Roses"...? Okay, so not a great place to find your spouse...
This is a good news day😃
That is AMAZING news about CF. My sister died of CF about 50yrs ago at age 4 before I was born. I never knew Paula, but she was very very loved. I’m so glad moms and dads and sisters and brothers and husbands and wives and partners and kids will get decades more with their loved ones ❤
Met my husband at a local government meeting. Quite sure we never would have found each other on a dating app. Get out there live and in person, and don't hesitate to ask someone you're interested in for their # or out for a cup of coffee. You never know! 😊
Yup. I'm really political and left wing, so meeting people on board with that is most likely to happen at protests.
GREAT ADVICE
Coffee klatsch IS the way to go.
Younger people are wondering why you are suggesting that someone ask for someone else’s hashtag. #️⃣ 😂😂
Good advice though.
text messaging is the most emotionally distant form of communication, i dont even like texting with my friends too much it feels like it's ruining the friendships. First used one of these apps 10 years ago, officially retired as of last year. Not to brag but i feel confident talking to people IRL and its impossible to be charming in a text message. It comes off as corny or trying too hard, i hard disagree with the concept of dating apps as a practical dating tool. I got plenty of dates, and even a relationship or two out of them over the years, but I think they're part of the reason people , especially single people, are so negative.
I will never pay for another dating app subscription again, not even considering that the prices are totally ridiculous and you can "boost" your profile for 30 minutes.... its so patronizing, i hate everything about them.
This guest's story is so inspiring, it made me tear up.
A reminder that cystic fibrosis is a constellation of thousands of genetic mutations that share a common realm of symptoms and disease. Not all treatments work for all patients, but this guest shares a valuable insight that all people either living with or without chronic disease can benefit from. Thank you for having them on to share their story!
Thank you for presenting this guest, Jenny Livingston.. As a retired RN, I am in awe of the medical advances to give these people a renewal of their life. I really appreciate the young CF patients getting to look at living longer. What a blessing to be able to extend life through a medication. Hopefully, she will live a long and beautiful life. What is the app, she uses?
So thankful 97% of CF patients have a mutation that will respond to Trikafta. More treatment responders than we had to Lumacaftor and Ivacaftor. We still lose patients, though and maintaining really good pulmonary toilet will always be important for these patients.

The issue I’ve heard from other women my age is that men on dating apps want a woman at least 20 years younger than they are. So if you’re in your 50s or 60s men are on there looking for women in their 40s or younger.
And men, those age tend to lie about how they look
That's actually how men behave in person too so not surprising. 🙁
Yeah, that's not super surprising. And one of the problems if you're a man on dating apps (at least in your late 20s), you're made to feel pretty disposable. Feels like the women in this age bracket always think there's someone better just around the corner, and you run into a LOT of flaky people. Not to mention the fact that there's significantly more men on dating apps than women and so there's more competition that way, too.
Dating apps definitely suck both ways, though in different ways.

It’s true, interest rates made everything worse. By adding new pay walls and pay tiers to all the digital experiences that have always been open. Instead of just increasing costs for borrowers, the fed made an entire generations daily life more difficult and annoying. A reminder that fancy new tech ‘solutions’ are just a backdoor to monetizing what had been spontaneous and free.
What a beautiful interview, thank you!
Just an amazing program. Thank you.
Dating apps used to be personal classified ads in newspapers. it was the cheesiest way to meet a person. Now everybody thinks the technique is normal and not cheesy.
I had a friend with CF who passed away when we were 16 (about a decade ago). While it's bittersweet to think that a treatment like this was just around the corner, I'm glad people are getting the help they need now. It's also very touching because the way she talks about CF reminds me of the battle I went through with MDD/RDD (depression) and how I went through TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) treatments which saved my life. What a powerful story.

In New Orleans graveyards are part of the landscape. Especially in the city proper you will find a small one block graveyard in the middle of a residential area. It is jarring for visitors, but people step out of their homes, step onto the porch and are greeted with a full graveyard with aboveground tombs and headstones. We are confronted with the reality daily, and that shapes your ability to "let go of the small stuff" in a very special way. It is a weird gift. You mentioned lower interest in watching the news. I have no data for you. But personally, I watch the news less and have increased my intake of podcasts like yours. To me they replace the Dateline or other interesting news that I grew up with. I mean, they *can* work as advertised (I know multiple couples who met that way), but they foster bad practices that leave too many people behind with little to show for it. Now that they are demanding subscription fees I’m not surprised to hear that people are leaving them in droves.
@@chamberlain323 I can only talk for Germany. The fee is wayyyy higher than 15$, they suppress all relevant information about prospects, don’t give meaningful search options. They advertise with “Every 11 seconds a new couple is made on our site.” If you compare that to the enormous number of people signed on you understand the grift that it is. And I don’t assume that differs much across western countries. I’d have much better chances finding someone if I just contacted my interesting Twitter followers.
