    Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

      Good luck with that. Seriously. I'm twice your age, and I lost my optimism during the George W. Bush administration, after years of seeing Republican success with their "Southern strategy" of deliberately wooing white racists. At this point,... well, there's just nothing left.
      Even George W. Bush was below rock-bottom. _Americans_ supporting the torture of prisoners of war??? But it got _so_ much worse. At this point, my optimism is _gone._ I still vote, of course, in _every_ election. I support Democratic candidates with campaign contributions - all I can afford. But I really have no optimism left.

Be specific and don't assume people understand this! I honestly don't meet many people who understand what we are losing when we lose trained journalists reporting stories. Oh, and I've been running my own informal poll for years now: most *college-educated* people I meet don't know how to identify the difference between investigative reportage and opinion! Like if they do think crime is on the rise we should be asking when is the last time they actually witnessed a violent crime. Ask for a date. And when they did that did they call the police? Testify at trial? Because we need to get these people to realize that the life outside their media ecosystem isn't as scary as they portray it.

    I am the voice in my workplace, in my family and in my friend group that proclaims the dangers of American Christo-Fascism and the good done by democrats fighting for an expansion of civil liberties. The biggest problems I have with arguing against a republican is that their arguments are toy soldiers. You tear one down and they just toss another one out, they can't defend their position so instead of engaging on a topic they just move to the next. Once all their points are exhausted they say "well you have your opinion and I have mine" but they don't have an opinion, they have fox news' opinion, but they don't fully understand it so they can't articulate it well. If you asked my opinion on something I'd have a comprehensive reason for my position and I'd be able to defend it from scrutiny. If I was shown to be wrong I would reconsider my opinion because I don't want to hold untrue beliefs. These republicans do not care to hold true beliefs, they only believe what's popular with their voting base, and their voting base doesn't care for truth but only care for what confirms their preconceived biases

    I think we need to step back and look at where a lot of these issues started.
    I believe it was during the Reagan era that deregulation was passed. What this did was to cause everything from travel to medication prices to increase.
    Farm subsidies shifted to corn production because corn was looked at as an alternate fuel source in the form of ethanol. Because of ethanol production, the price of gasoline was increased. The government asked farmers to produce more corn for ethanol production. The U.S. exported more grain during the sixties. A company came up with the idea of GMO. This would increase the quality of our produce sold in markets.
    Housing prices skyrocketed because it was cheaper to buy wood products from Canada. However, this caused a spike in building supplies because we had to pay import tariffs. This higher rate was passed on to the consumer which caused housing prices to increase.
    We got flooded with cars from overseas like Toyota, Datsun, Hyundai, Kia, Dawu (not sure if that was spelled right). Kia was introduced as the most affordable car on the market. All of this brought the shift from American made vehicles to imported. MPG was another driver from American made to foreign made vehicles.
    Also due to deregulation, the cost of medical costs were driven up.
    I ask for your readers to try to get their hands on a copy of a book titled Mega Trends. This book was written before our move from the industrial age to the Information Age. This is where we are now. We can’t turn back the hands of time but we can look back and learn.

  • @roxyb03
    @roxyb03 2 месяца назад +2

    You hit on a big part of the problem when mentioning housing and unprocessed trauma. Trauma generally can't be effectively processed under conditions of perpetual stress. Not knowing where you might be living if you can't pay rent brings concerns about personal safety to the forefront. Biden needs to renew the eviction moratorium now and present a post election plan for widespread debt relief (well beyond student debt). By the way, there are people still suffering from the fallout from the 2008 crisis. Biden needs to wake up and realize that just because the economy or housing market (or any given "economic indicator") appears statistically recovered, doesn't mean that the people harmed during the crisis have recovered, any more than a peace treaty can magically mend battle injuries (some take a lot longer to heal especially if never properly stabilized ).

    Hey! I’m a young voter (21) and I just want to share my perspective here. Before I say anything I want to mention I watch this show and Pod Save the World whenever an episode comes out, and I’m politically engaged. I love y’all and I’d be subscribing to your upper tiers if I could afford it haha. I know you will likely not see this, but I’d like to offer some constructive criticism from a more “youthful” perspective. At times, this podcast seems out of touch. It’s well known, and you’ve recognized it, but young people just cannot afford housing right now, at least not at the rate other generations have been able to obtain it. This includes renting. Young people would appreciate even regulation of these massive companies that are buying up hundreds of properties and making renting unaffordable. You can point at how the economy is getting better all you want but young people have really just lost hope. We feel like we’ll be paying into social security for the boomers and then be forced to participate in a hellscape where everything, even housing depends on a subscription. If Biden and the democrats want to reach out and gain young voters - true progress needs to be made on housing

      Not to mention Gaza - you’ve talked about this at length and I appreciate the criticism of the administration. But I don’t think big D democrats have fully realized how many young voters they’re losing by continuing to support Israel in what is essentially a genocide. I know “TikTok” is brought up a lot but even just reading the NYT it’s clear that this is a horrific situation that we are actively paying for. I may still vote for Biden, almost against my conscience, because I know Trump would be worse. But that isn’t a consensus amongst young people

The sheer stupidity of not supporting Biden and risking another Trump presidency over this, is mindboggling to me, and I’m European. If Trump gets re-elected, Gaza will be bulldozed, and Ukraine will be handed over to Putin. The world will burn.
      Netanyahu won’t stop sacrificing everything in his attempts to stay in power and avoid justice, and once Putin has Ukraine, he will start attacking other European countries. Do you really want WW3 on your conscience because President Biden isn’t tough enough on Israel?
