Perfect stereo cable instructional. Joining the unbalanced 2314 at the TRS connector is so simple, so smart. Details matter so much. It should be a breeze working with technicians like you. Thank you.
Thank you for this. Didn't know this was possible. I will now be using this kind of cable for my HX Stomp. Stereo Out from my headphone to a monitor/amp.
Great tutorial. Can use use a similar cable to combine a mono out and return (Out 1-4 (tip) and In 5-6 (ring) on the Mastermind PBC) to a TRS plug then plug the TRS into a patch bay so that another similar Y cable (TRS to TS in (tip) and out(ring)) cable can go to input and output of a pedal off the board (audition pedal)?
Thanks! You could do what you describe for sure, but the outputs you mention are only TS, not TRS. You would just use two TS cables to go into the rear of the patchbay and you're done.
@@AlphatoneAudio Thanks for the quick reply. To clarify, I want to use TS plugs for the out/in on the PBC and combine those to a TRS plug to go into a Schmidt array patch bay using only one plug. Then on the outside use a Y cable TRS to TS/TS for the input and output of the audition pedal. Is that right?
If I plug the TRS end into the mono output jack of my accoustic-electric guitar, and the two TS ends into the left and right inputs of a stereo channel on my sound mixer, will I get a full level-set output.
I have been looking for info on how to make this type of cable for my rjm pbc10. This is great video. Thanks now I have a confidence in making my own cable. Nice job!
Great video & instruction. Thank you! I appreciate your attention to detail. Question: when soldering the cable to the Tip on the Switchcraft 236 plug (at 11:05) is it important to make sure the solder doesn't contact the plug casing below the threads on the plug? Would this create a short or other problem? My apology if this is a dumb question. Thanks for your time & response.
Thank you! This is a great question, but you don't have to worry too much about it on these plugs. They come with an insulator that keeps the solder points from shorting out on the shell, as well as having plenty of internal clearance.
I could've used some heat shrink wrap around the two cables that you fed thru the barrel to make them a bit more rigid and protected other than good work.
While this is mostly applicable it would be nice to have a "Part 2" that illustrates the challenges of building a 1/8 TRS to dual 1/4 TS insert cable. These TR/S consumer 1/8 sized plugs are, for better or worse, becoming ubiquitous in the synthesizer market.
Hi, very nice 👌 Can you describe the difference for the strymon trs 1/4in trs to dual 1/4 in tsf? Don't know why tsf by the way cos I tried to do the same as you but doesn't work on my capitan strymon (stereo mode..) Thanks Jérémy
Hi, I have a question that maybe you could help me out with. I have 2 Harmon Kardon Onyx 5 bluetooth speakers, and they cant be paired to play stereo. Does a cable exist that can split left and right channel individually so I can play them in stereo thru my phone's AUX straight into the AUX that is on the speakers?
One issue I've been running into is that the outer shield will melt while I solder - especially if it's touching the strain relief tabs. How are you pre-bending those tabs (putting them in direct contact with the outside of the cable) without the cable melting when you go to solder?
You're melting the outer jacket of the cable? What type of cable are you using? Sounds like you're using way too much heat, or just holding the iron to the part for too long, or both. At 750 degrees Fahrenheit, it should take you no longer that 2-3 seconds to solder the ground.
Thank you for the video. Could I add neutrik silent plugs to an insert cable? I have a studio and some pedals that have loop outputs and I like trying things out and thought of adding silent plugs to avoid the loud sound with connecting and disconnecting pedals... Thank you kindly
I have an ART headamp 6 pro and I want to send individual stereo aux out for headphone mixes from my 18i20. Would It make sense to use an insert stereo cable to feed the stereo aux input of the art headamp 6 pro unit?
@@AlphatoneAudio Great, thanks. Then I will use this vid tute. Just to let you know, I'm using the Gotham GAC 4/1 audio cable and since that cable has 4 wires, I'll have to pair up the Red and Pink wire, then the White and Beige wire together and go from there. If I have anymore questions I'll post it here. I also subbed to your channel. Again, thanks.
Now, into watching this vid, at 9:15 I see the left cable has only one wire and the right cable too, has only one wire. What do you do if you have 4 wires? Remember what I stated before, I'm using the Gotham GAC 4/1 audio cable. So it's double copper wire shielded and on the inside there are 4 small wires. Again (as I mentioned before), I will be pairing the up the Red and Pink (R&P) wire, then the White and Beige (W&B) wire together. Which paired wire (Right/Receive and Left/Send) will be soldered to the back of the TRS connector? Hope what I explained makes sense. Let me know what you can, thank you.
@@punknugget561 That's really too many conductors for an unbalanced application. I suggest you read up specifically on star-quad wiring configurations. Good luck.
@@AlphatoneAudio Thank you, I'll make the question even easier, what cable is soldered to the back TSR connector that is considered to be Right/Return and Left/Send? Again, thank you for your help.
DYMO special label maker. Pretty expensive. You’re just better off using your computer and typing out the words small enough where you can print them manually cut them put a piece of tape over them and wrap them around the cable. It’ll still look very clean and get the job done. You probably already did this since you’ve made this comment 11 months ago and have not been replied to yet. Well, there’s your answer.
I just tried to feed two 2319 cables into a Switchcraft 236 with no luck. You may have to go with the Neutrik plugs as you can always remove the strain relief collar if you need more room.
"because details matter" - thank you for being so thorough, but super digestible and easy to follow. great tutorial!
Thanks! Glad I could help.

You're a genius. Thank you for teaching me.
Nice work. I like to cinch the two cable ends together with a piece of heat shrink just to give the wings some more meat to clamp down on.

It looked like an already tight fit. I think adding shrink wrap would have been just enough to impede insertion through the barrel.

I checked the manual on that unit. The 6 aux inputs on the back are definitely stereo, so you could use an insert cable for this.
thanks for making this! which lead tab do you use to assign the left and the right?
Thanks! Ring is right channel, tip is left channel. Strymon pedals are wired the same way. Always check the manual though!
what straight plug would you recommend for doing this sort of thing? i've got a RJM PBC6x but my board is flat.
