DIY Rainwater Harvesting System with a Tarp and IBC Tote | Off Grid Cabin Build #20

  • In this episode of our off grid cabin build series we are trying to make our own rainwater harvesting system with a tarp and an IBC tote. We pulled the tarp on top of the walls so that water would be directed down to a certain spot, where we put a pipe so it can eventually drain into the IBC tote.

I like to see every stage; time lapse is great for things we've seen in more detail earlier.
With enough insulation, plumbing in the exterior wall should be just fine.

New sub to your channel here ... been in the building trades since 1973. Both home and commercial. I enjoy watching building and help if I can with questions. Since you ask questions of your viewers which is a good idea especially being your first build. I haven’t watched all of your videos but your framing looks just fine. You’ve tied your walls in ( perfect ) I would make one suggestion that I’ve noticed on your bathtub I see that it’s un-installed at the present time I also see that you haven’t cut the floor out for the drain. Which might be a very good idea prior to reinstalling the tub.. you will need to cut a rectangle out of the floor approximately 6 inches wide by about 9 to 10 inches long to accommodate your drain kit. Which is much easier to do from the top of the floor it will start right at the edge of your bottom plate for the overflow pipe and go toward the back of the tub about 9 perhaps even a foot depending on your tub then find the center of your tub drain in inches make a mark on the floor where the center of the tub should set then make a mark about 3 inches each side of that center mark then mark out that box and cut it out of the floor.. if you want after all the plumbing is complete you can then go under the house and build a box to cover that hole up. This In the past was a standard way of making room for your tub drain so unless tub design has changed this is something you may want to do ahead of time. I would definitely investigate it before you reinstall your tub... as for the tarp all I can say is good luck I’ve never had one not fail when installed that way good luck

I don't mind the skipping. I like the tarp idea. Hopefully it works for you all. You might want to look at having some half inch pvc 10 foot lengths around. You can use it for various projects ribs for roofing, green house projects and other things. Oh don't forget some various fittings. Also go ahead and put your plumbing on the outside wall. Insulation insulation insulation. Think about using PEX. Very user friendly and stands up in cold temps. Also insulate sewer lines they will freeze also. It gets very cold in northern Idaho. I know from living in priest lake.

When I built my house it rained every night. The subfloor was soaked with water standing on it from Tuesday to Monday when I got the OSB on the roof. Did not hurt it. A contractor I knew told me a house he was building had over a foot of snow in a house for over 2 weeks, no damage.
Collecting rain water is great, don't worry about the floor.

Skipping is fine less video work LOLOL Doing what you are doing giving a general progress and some pics is good. Love the tarp lolol. Insulate your piping on any and all exterior wall piping especially in the crawl space. GREAT job puppy for climbing that step ladder...awesome. My golden retriever would have nothing to do with climbing a ladder LOL. There is some sealant that you can put into a self pump container that you can spray onto the plywood flooring and it will really help to save your plywood.

Hello, Mr. Martin. Nice project, no comments about it. If I was in your pants, I would first of all focus on the roof, if it doesn't need internal supports. The roof is the main value when building, specially at your location which is very prone to winter and rain or simplier said weather mood swings.. =) With the roof waterproof you can build even in bad weather in the insides.. No hurry, that's only my opinion. I have the feeling that this winter will be sooner as usual, maybe I'm wrong.. but.. well...you know..
Cheers and greetings from the slovenian conuntry in central Europe..

About doing the plumbing outside of your laundry room, you can create an insulated frame with a door attached just in case you need to have to work with the plumbing. In other words, a kind of insulated box with a door, so the plumbing doesn't become an undesirable view.

Plumb with pex A tubing and it will help minimize frozen pipes. It has excellent freeze / thaw / burst ratings. Best to install pipes up through the floors not the walls, and if pipe is installed in walls, wrap the pipes with pre-slit pipe insulation.

  • @LatchkeyKidX

If you do plumbing on the exterior wall, make sure to put in a disconnect and valve for that section so you can just shut it off and drain that section when the temps dip super low.

I have modified several things on my house. One way I can think of to keep the pipes from freezing is to build and insulate the exterior wall, including the drywall, then apply a four inch wall to that to house the plumbing. Maybe even use a grill ( like an air return grill) as a cover at the pipes so the heated room air can enter.

Might be a good idea to run all water pipes inside the house. Run them along the baseboards in a boxed channel. Use Pex Pipe, it expands if pipe freezes. Just a great product. Gets very cold in the winter and running water pipes inside is getting more popular for a great reason. GOOD LUCK, Vinny 🇺🇸 PS, REINFORCE THAT TARP. THOSE PATHETIC GROMMETS WONT HOLD. YOU CAN BUY SPECIAL GROMMETS THAT EASILY ATTACH TO THE TARP. WHEN DONE YOU CAN SAVE THEM FOR ANOTHER TARP.

I like to see it all even though it's the same wall it's a little bit different experience and so I enjoy seeing all of it. As for the laundry room I think it's a good idea for the extra storage I think it really depends on how you're going to heat your cabin and whether or not the laundry room will stay warm enough to keep the pipes from freezing but what would be wrong with just putting the storage on the window / exterior wall? I think the tarp will still be there in 10 or 12 days I don't know about two or three or four weeks till you get your trusses.
Oh and I do think you guys are doing a great job not just the way you're building the cabin set the whole family Thing too.

Were you planning on using pex for the plumbing? If so I believe you will be fine as long as you have adequate insulation. Ive seen professionals swear by pex that its better the pvc for cold environments. I would suggest some research to verify. But I think its doable from my handy man experience. Good luck!

  • @68Jaguar420G
    @68Jaguar420G 5 лет назад +3

You are right to not want plumbing in an exterior wall, not even the drain let alone water supply. However you can still arrange the washer and dryer on that wall with a work around. Finish the exterior wall as standard with insulation, vapour barrier and drywall. Then build a "knee wall" approximately 48" high ( a bit higher than the washer and dryer height) in front of, in contact with and firmly affixed to the structural exterior wall. Run all the plumbing in the stud cavities of this wall then drywall and finish - no insulation, no vapour barrier. 2 x 4 studs should give you plenty of depth for a washer drain and water lines - depending how and where you are running the 4" diameter dryer vent you might need 2x6 studs. The plumbing will be on the "warm side" of the insulation. Yes you will loose some floor space doing this but you get your preferred arrangement.
I also noticed you have completed some of your headers so they are flush with the front face of the studs. How about a quick update on how you did those?
Cute shot of Tux being so insistent on getting up the ladder to his Daddy!! :-)
    As ever updates are enjoyed.
    Thanks and Cheers
    Carl

my vote is a good rain it goes flying. or if rains come it blows the low points then drowns the lot. best bet too make T supports that level the tarp too run the way you want. no open areas that are not supported. but the tarp is too small for that idea. should of went with a 30 by 60. run then five foot side too the walls to keep the wind from taking it. and there isn't that much more cost then what you spent. the idea is too keep the water out of the house with what you got too work with. here's another idea, think about raising the roof a few feet ,adding a taller loft. or just go with the seven foot wall and floor the attic into full rooms.
