    AMA ZING!!!! I have an original 80´s Sonor Lite kit sizes 10", 12", 13", 14" rack toms, 16" floor tom, and 22" bass drum. I had all Signature stands. 2 x double tom stands, snare stand, 3 x semi boom cymbal stands, and 1 x boom cymbal stand. I still have 1 x of the double tom stands, but sold all the others for around 1800€. I still have ALL the drums. They sound amazing. Especially in the recording studio. i´m now a proud Pearl/Zildjian endorser, and own a 7 piece Masters kit, and a 5 piece Crystal Beat kit. :)

    I bought a new Bubinga Heavy 12/13/16/22 kit with hardcases and the 14*8 chrome snare in 1985. Great drums but too high and heavy to take on a gig or for recordings. I traded them for a Designer + Euro in the early 2000s and later got a DW collector although I kept the Signature Snare. DW hardware is cheap in comparison to Sonor and ages fast. But the whole DW kit weighs about the same as just the Signature Heavy 22" kick drum 😂 Currently enjoying a Tama Hyperdrive.

    • @stdrumsgmbh
      @stdrumsgmbh  9 месяцев назад

      thanks for the comment! Sonic series got great shells aswell, however the hardware is not regarded as so great. We got quite a few emails from customers who asked us for replacement FT-legs and BD-spurs for these Sonic drums. Also the used Performer drums are not expensive in Germany - probably the same price category as Sonic Plus on the used market

    • @grandcrappy

      @stdrumsgmbh noted. My Sonic Plus are "industrial. strength", overbuolt. I like the bright, aggressive punch with quick decay, slightly harsher sound than warm maple.

    I’ve been collecting Phonic and Phonic Plus ‘orphan’ drums for a couple of years and refinishing them all to resemble the ebony finish.
    Can anyone comment on the sound difference from the Phonic Plus to the Signature Heavy Beech?

  • @ruifaustino
    @ruifaustino Год назад +2

    Great job, beautiful drums. It would be interesting to hear how historically the 18" became the 16" deep size. Personally, I like the sound of the 18x14", the 18x15" has some extra volume and low end, but the 18x16" ends up being too loud for a bop kit, and too small for a rock set. It's a special sound, but problematic in terms of tuning range and definition. Steve Gadd in Ricky Beato's interview shared some insights about bass drum depth. It's a theme which people don't talk much about.

    17:38- It's to bad you couldn't have reproduced these mufflers. Drums today don't have these and in my opinion made a great addition. With a change in music style in a single performance, you could change the sound of the drum using these. For the Gretsch drums they were called tone controls, but were really just muffles for the heads.

    • @stdrumsgmbh
      @stdrumsgmbh  4 месяца назад

      thanks for the comment! Many sets on the used market have the mufflers removed because people use them I guess, so if you want to restore a kit with the original mufflers, they can be quite pricey now. As far as I know the original signatures had these external mufflers that were clipped to the hoops and muffled the head from outside. Theoretically they could also be added to this performer set 😁

    • @chrish7336
      @chrish7336 4 месяца назад +1

      @@stdrumsgmbh I have heard that Kits were being manufactured without them any more because the hardware supposedly reduced the sound of the drums as well as added rattles as they wore out/loosened.
      Plus, drummers were finding other ways to muffle the heads that were cheaper even if not as good lookin. Also didn't allow flexibility of different music styles.
      I will agree, the cost to replace any of them any more is high.

    Didn't the veneer add to the OD of the drums? How did you compensate for that?

    • @stdrumsgmbh
      @stdrumsgmbh  Год назад

      we removed the old wraps which decreased the diameter and the veneers are very thin (way thinner than the ply layers on a shell, and even thinner than most drumwrap), so there was no need to compensate really. Sonor shells are a bit smaller anyways, and the lugs got movable inserts, so I would say up to 1mm additional OD should be no problem.

    Are you aware????.... that the rack tom's lower shell edge is right on top of the snare stand and with no lower structural support of that drum's shell (since it's an open concert tom- no hoop/head) will cause that drum shell to warp(even possibly crack or weaken) just from playing it in this position. You claim to have wisdom in buying drums, and from another drummer who's played and collected for nearly a 1/2 Century - I'd think twice about buying it or anything else from you. That's something you'd see someone who's oblivious to maintaining a drum set would engage in, and from anyone who's ever dealt with buying drums that have a warped or weakened shell.......I won't even go there

    • @stdrumsgmbh
      @stdrumsgmbh  4 месяца назад +1

      The video was uploaded 11 months ago and is 24 minutes long - at least give us the timestamp of the drum you are talking about, I am not aware of a concert tom on a snarestand in any of our videos, so please let me know what you mean.
      Also we don't claim to "have wisdom"... I don't know where you have that sentence from.

    Where do you purchase yhe wooden wrap material? I tried to rewrap my teardrop years ago here in the States but could not find a place that sold wood that thin. 1"8" was the thinnest, and I could not find Scandinavian birch like I wanted. Only maple. But 1/8" is quite thick, especially on a teardrop 3-ply shel that is probably less that 1/8". I ended up not wrapping it at all, not wanting to choke the vibration of the shell. Also, what kind of glue do you use to apply the wood wrap?

    • @stdrumsgmbh
      @stdrumsgmbh  Год назад

      we actually offer thin wooden veneers like that in our shop: stdrums.com/en/c/wrap/real-wood-veneer they come with a thin nonwoven layer on the back that makes it easier to use them. The ones in the video where made without this nonwoven, but we can't sell them individually unfortunately. If you are looking for a certain type of wood veneer that is not in our shop you can send us a picture of the type of finish you are looking for via email, then we can check if we can source a veneer like that. For the veneers with the nonwoven layer we recommend the same 3M Scotch-weld 30 glue that we recommend for our drumwraps. You can use our contact form on the bottom of the page at stdrums.com thanks!
