    Wow! I didn't realize I have the only 1970 GT350 convertible 4 speed car ever built with factory air conditioning! I bought it new, so I can verify it had factory air. I also owned a couple of 68 GT500s and a 68 GT500KR 4 speeds (also purchased new) with factory air. I really like Shelbys, and was deeply involved with them back in the 1960s. Please get your facts straight before putting them out there. BTW, the 351 Windsors in the 69 and 70 GT350s had an aluminum high rise intake manifold, a decent cam and high compression, but were choked down by a 490 cm Autolite carburetor due to emissions requirements. Replacing that carb with a 600 cm Holley (as intended by Shelby) really improves the performance of the car. The 69 and 70 Shelby front fenders were also fiberglas, and, for many of the colors, the side stripes were reflective. The rear exhaust outlet is a chamber into which both the left and right exhaust emptu, creating a unique sound. There are two things that visually distinguish a 1970 from a 1969 Shelby - black stripes were painted over the two NACA hood inlets on the 1970 cars, and a chin spoiler was added to the 1970 cars (none on the 69s).

      Spot on facts, Thanx James. I fell in love with the '70 Shelby's also. I started Louisiana Tech in 1972 and had a '70 T/A Challenger, Plum Crazy on black that I was nuts over. I was changing the interior to red when a friend pulled up in a '70, dark Blue on black, Shelby GT 500 convertible! Well ... I needed something to drive while the T/A was down, so I bought it from him. Both were Great cars. Wish I'd have never let go of either of them. But you know the old saying ... Young, Dumb & fulla ... ... ... Crazy ideas. Skal, ^v^

    I remember the first Shelby GT 500 I ever saw was at a gas station in my town in 1969. The guy who owned it pulled out of the gas station, stopped on the road then nailed the gas. His Shelby rolled out thick smoke and layed down the longest burnout I ever saw a stock car do.

    All 69/70 Shelby GT 350's had the 351 4-V Windsor because 1970 models were actually built in 69 as he says. In 1970 the 351 Cleveland became available for the Mustang. But by then all the 1970 Shelby's had been built. Most early 70 Mustangs,( except the BOSS 302 and 429) built before Jan 1, 1970 came with 351 Windsor's if a 2V carb was ordered. Only 351 4V cars got the Cleveland. After Jan 1 all Mustangs with few exceptions got the Cleveland 351 2V or 4V. 1967 Shelby's use Cougar taillights, 68-70 Shelby's got the T-Bird lights. NO mustang 65-70 was ever available with power windows, or locks from the factory. And only BOSS 429's ever saw a 429 installed. It was not until the 71 model year that Ford offered power windows and a 429 as options on a Mustang. Power locks were never available, 65-73. 1972/73 Mustangs were limited to 302 2V as their base engine and 351C 2-V and 4-V engines. The 429CJ and SCJ V-8 option lasted only one year.

      The factory 351 cu. in. WINDSOR motor that came in these 69/70 Shelby's was much slower than other engine options available before and after this 69/70 Shelby only version. The REAL "made in 1970" and later Shelby's with a 351 used the CLEVELAND motor instead of the Windsor, and the newer Cleveland 351 had much better power & performance. Plus......you call a 351 "big cubes"???? Not hardly, especially back in those days. "Big cubes" back then would only describe their 427's, 428's, and 429's. ( And yes, Ford DID make a 427 for a while, that made INSANE power in their famous but extremely rare '64 Ford "Thunderbolt". I believe they also used a 427 in 2 different versions in other Fords too. I believe the side-oiler version was the more powerful of the two. )

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 4 года назад

      @@Johnnycdrums Yes, you're correct, but that was just the block. I could be wrong, but I think that was because the Cleveland was, and is not as abundant, for whatever reason. I can't remember if Ford quit making the 351 Cleveland, but of course they continued making the Windsor. The Windsor is a great all-around general purpose engine & lots of guys prefer it over the Cleveland. I'm no "Ford expert", but I know that they have a way of using the Cleveland heads mated to the Windsor block to make more power, because they have much better air flow than the Windsor heads. ( "My Vintage Iron" made a video talking about that a while back, that guy is one of the best mechanics & teacher on youtube. ) It's a very popular way of building the Windsor into a high performance motor. Not sure how they built the Windsor's for NASCAR. Those cats are among the best engine builders in the world. It's amazing how they can get north of 700 hp from a normally aspirated engine, and have it run at WOT for 500 miles.

    The reason for the special re-vin with the FBI...was that Ford would have had to do a whole new dash and steering column due to federal regulations requiring a locking steering wheel. So by re numbering left over 69s they saved that expense.

    In the early 1953 Kaiser converted many 1953 kaisers to 1954 kaisers by replacing the entire front clip with 1954s and titling them as 1954 first series. When the supply of converted 1953's was sold the 1954 second series was introduced. It had a completely different dashboard and a number of other changes including superchargers. Don't know if they had to worked with the FBI on that one ???
