    It's so fun, most of the basic zero waste hacks are things my german grandma does xD Especially the thing with the napkins, everyone deems her as crazy because of that, but they are so useful! I do the same, but mainly because I have hayfever and need every emergency tissue I can get if my hanky is 'full'

    • @philquota7405
      @philquota7405 3 года назад

      Similar. I have gotten a lot of zero waste tradition from my thrifty Polish grandparents. I don't remember ever seeing disposable napkins/tissues/paper towels in my grandparent's house, except when they got a hookup from the local factory, LOL

    Our dog is also called Molly.
    Nice video. I only use rucksacks as bags are terrible for the back and in it I have:
    - A cloth bag
    - A small cosmetic bag in which I have toothpaste powder, floss (not ZW), toothbrush (also not ZW), a nail clipper, plasters (not ZW)
    - A mask that I got from work that I will use until it dies
    - Tissues
    - Keys
    Getting it all to be ZW would be the next step.

      Ikr? Growing up everything used to be so much less plastic "dependent", I'm 36 and I see all the changes :/ I remember the shop lady hand writing (and calculating!) our purchase in any random piece of paper around, news paper, wherever

    • @supernova622

      Thermal paper eliminated the need for ink cartridges and ribbons (is it better or worse for the environment? 🤷🏼🤷🏼🤷🏼)

    • @michaelafischer6177
      @michaelafischer6177 2 года назад

      Some can. A zero-waste shop near me uses non-plastic coated receipts for this purpose. But honestly, most are hybrid and I'm not even sure that paper receipts will get picked up in the recycling stream, given it's most likely a computer AI sorting (but even with the human sorting, I think most sorters would just assume it to be un-recyclable and remove it in many cases). One frustrating thing about plastic receipts is that the ink rubs off super quickly, and sometimes you need that for tax or a warranty. Meanwhile receipts from 4 decades ago are still clearly visible (long story. Found some in an op-shop bag, and my mother has also commented on this).

    I noticed your missing tooth on a wide smile in another video before you mentioned it here. You're super brave for just coming out about it. I have 4 missing teeth because there were no adult teeth to take their place (trade off-only 2 wisdom teeth!) There is a stigma here in northeast US about less perfect teeth. I could do a long rant about teeth. The purpose of teeth is to chew food, not act as a status symbol! Not everyone can afford cosmetic dentistry. I would love to see a video on waste and resources that go into cosmetic dentistry. I mean pure vanity projects, not unfortunate events that were made worse by loss of teeth.

      MESH/SISAL BAGS.
      I had that exact problem and originally i saved them and then melted them down together but nowadays i put them in a fine mesh bag and use them in the bag in pieces when they get small. It allows me to use the entire bar easily without the hassle of melting something down.

    • @xerrias
      @xerrias 3 года назад +1

      @@Emi-ll5ms i just had some organza drawstring giftbags around from gifts i had been given in the past, but if you dont have anything like that you can buy organza, cotton, burlap, linen, muslin, etc. I don't know what would work the best but you want the product to make it through the bag. The sisal soap bags are made for that purpose and I know you can buy them many places online. While I've never used sisal before thats *probably* the best option for material if you dont have something laying around to reuse like I did.

      @@Emi-ll5ms I might be too late in responding. But for next time, if they are oil-based bars (most of them are), when it gets small enough, just mush the old one on top of the new one. No bag required ;)

Some friends have been asking me about zero waste recently and I want to be able to tell them (in fairly short terms so as not to lose their interest with a long lecture, haha) what it's all about, what the benefits are etc in order to get them more interested and maybe inspire them to try some things on their own. Would really love help and tips on how to talk to friends who show interest in it about zero waste :)

    This is super basic of me, but whenever I get a take-away--an icy pole in paper or a cardboard box of chips lined with wax paper--I always think about how this isn't really zero waste (not that it has to be), because I'm pretty sure syrup/oil-stained paper needs to go in the waste stream anyway. But I never see these sort of items in people's trash online, so I'm extremely confused about whether that's normal within a sustainable lifestyle and whether I'm missing something about the kind of trash I make and how I process it. Just to clarify, I understand there are waste-free alternatives, like making my own icy poles (I do!), and I also understand that sustainability is way deeper than wrappers in a bin, but that's not what I'm asking... I'm just confused when I see people's weekly trash posts. I always think, but what about the non-plastic non-recyclables/on the cusp recyclable items?
