step three. blend some colours
step four. add some more white
step five. BAM beautiful artwork
You paint first in white to close the pores of the canvas
The white paint at the beginning is a canvas primer like a face primer and is called gesso

Doesn't have to. I use watercolour trays and I prefer those over the tubes.
But I have proffesional watercolour trays though, that can make a huge difference.

You didn't understand my comment. You said this couldn't be done with watercolour trays, however I did. Just use 1 or 2 drops on the tray to make the paint really thick. It's not that hard, I use this technique for fur/trees/water just like the guy in the video did.
