- Nothing is more unexpected than a Ford Explorer ST roaring past your sports car... This is an insane vehicle, even with 7 seats and TON of cargo space, it can tear things up with it's 600hp!!
With a few upgrades, and a tune, these explorers are turned into a whole different animal. This one in particular was tuned at Livernois Motorsports in Detroit MI!! If you are thinking about getting one of these for yourself, consider this a sign... DO IT!!

What can you do for a 2.3 Explorer? Just bought my wife one.
You can do similar mods to achieve the same power for around $3k. Also, ZFG tuning rocks these, he has the most power as well as the best transmission tune hands down. No issues with the 10speed with his tune for many people running it. Just listening to the sloppy shifts in this video shows how much better the ZFG trans tune is. Livernois has awesome engine tunes, but ZFG has the best transmission tunes.

Your right. With the parts I have and want to get, it should sit me around $3k-ish. For the HP gains you get for that little money is awesome! You sold me on the ZFG. I almost went with 5-star but i think ZFG is the right move.

@@atctraveler6218 None. I just finished installing the AFE cold air. Then the Steeda Intercooler. The Thermal R&D 3" exhaust. And the Steeda Diff brace. Next step is the ZFG tune. I really like the way the ST drives now with what I got all installed. I know it will turn into a different beast once I do the tune. Next couple months I'll get it.
Oh Also the Steeda Strut tower brace was installed. Not that it does anything for performance but it's there lol.
They killed it with the ecoboost. I’ve been converted had a rental expedition with the ecoboost and was blown away. I’d rock the hell out of an explorer st. My daily is a 2006 jeep srt8 with a decent amount of work. 0-60 sub 3.5

im told besides the high theft rate on the SRT8s also those motors are nowhere near as dependable as the Ford ST
I have a 2020 Explorer ST running a Livernois Stage 4, 93 Octane Tune, Dyno'd @455HP and 552TQ. I don't know why the masses on this thread thinks ZFG has a better tune, when it's only getting 412HP and 491TQ. Go figure!. I've been running my Livernois tune for almost 4yrs with absolutely ZERO issues! Also have Steeda lowering springs and rear adjustable sway bar. Custom installed stainless steel Cat-Back exhaust system, and 24" 3-piece Forgiato wheels. She's quite the looker and performer!

I dont know if the guy in the vid is lying or if he didn’t communicate clearly. But he said with ethanol it should max out at 600whp. My understanding is that would require larger turbos, injectors and a fuel pump. Maybe he just meant thats what the internals will handle. Idk.
That’s because ZFG has a better tune, it’s been proven on the tracks and dragy results 🤦♂️

This makes me want to trade in my Explorer for an ST model. Sounds beautiful. We all know it’s not a Trackhawk, but still a reliable daily driver is fun!

My X3M has an 8 speed paired to a six cyl engine and I think it'd be neck in neck with this explorer in a straight line race.

I get my THERMAL R&D 3" CAT-BACK EXHAUST SYSTEM WITH MID PIPES - COATED TIPS tomorrow and I just got my AFE MOMENTUM GT COLD AIR INTAKE SYSTEM W/ PRO 5R MEDIA. Was trying to figure out who to go with for the tune but ZFG keeps popping up as the best. Going to add all the items in over the next week. I need to get the Steeda Intercooler and Diff brace to make it more complete. Looking forward to the new added power these parts will bring. 👍👍

These are nice, even stock. I have thought a couple times about buying one but just can't justify the price. I had an overnight test drive of one that I put about 600 miles on. I was even looking at a slightly used one and when I told the salesman I wasn't going to buy it he said "Hmm.. gimme a minute." and he left for like 5 minutes and came back with another salesman who also worked at the dealership who owned one with a tune and maybe some other mods and said "Go for a ride with him..". I still couldn't justify the price, but I went for the ride.. the tune and such really wakes these things up even more lol. If these were 40k new, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. At this point, the way I look at it- if you're gonna spend $50k plus on a vehicle, you might as well just buy a truck even if you don't have any need for it just because if you do ever happen to have the need for it, you'll already have it. I'm not even a truck guy....
Well said! They do have a high price tag, so it definitely isn’t for everybody. More people go with the truck for sure!
Got mine with 60k miles for $40k out the door. Little high mileage but was one oldhead owner and is mint condition. You could find a solid one for $37-$42k

@@bobbylawson2177 no 500 crank isn’t fast enough. ZFG all the way I’m not going to get into the details of why I say no to livernois but I’ll give you one. There shop being in Michigan if they mess up your car they are protected and don’t need to pay out to fix it.

This guy said some weird stuff talking about his tune being 450hp and well north of that with multi levels of tuning while he also mentioned ethanol but never said he had ethanol but said how much it should be pushing on ethanol. It's like a non car guy trying to be better than car guys around car guys. I think he read the K&N air filter package and actually believed he would have a 23% horsepower increase to the wheels.
@@zack8819 he’s just being fed dumpster fire information from livernois. I’ve dealed with them, and know someone personally who has been robbed by them. Livernois I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole.
Very nice but alot of work to get here. I used to have a 1998 Explorer sport with tons of mods on it. That thing FLEW with the explorer express package.that was a long time ago now.

Have a 2020 ST and with the tune alone, ran a 4.2 0-60 with over 300 lbs of equipment in the cargo area. Without the equipment, it would probably break into the 3's. Getting a CVF intercooler installed in 3 days. Ethanol is free power after the tune but it's too hard to find in my area and if I do, the pump is rated 51-83%. Hard to nail down the percentage you want when the pump doesn't even know.
If I go any further, I may just do a turbo upgrade and call it a day. I'm not a tracker but that should well be enough fun. :)

I have a 2017 Platinum TT with stage 1 Livernois. $600 tuner and runs low 5s to 60. Plenty of power and fun. Not sure I need to do much more. Basically the stage 1 gets me to the newer stock ST power level.

87 on a tuned twin turbo is nuts
The 2014 was a beast as well except one problem. Tune it and even if you didn't the timing chains would stretch and the tensioners couldn't keep the chain taught anymore. The code we all know pops up and it's rebuild the engine. This gen seems to know people are going to tune it and was proactive. How long will the motor survive like this we have yet to see. Explorer Sport and the new ST has always been fun to drive and I hope Ford takes cares of its fans this time around.

Nice ST and excellent video. Mile high, here and haven't seen any tuned STs. I'd like to line up with one, '15 Sport Edge 2.7 Livernois stage 4 e30-blend. Done smoked the local SRT hemi Jeeps, Durangos. No challenge. Love all things Ford. Where are the Northern Colorado STs?

I have a 2019 Ford Fusion Sport 2.7 V6 Twin Turbo AWD 6 speed auto ..... 325 Hp and 385 ft lbs stock...... 3,600 lbs vs 4,600 in explorer...... i have a tune by Unleashed Fords stage 2 tune.....steeda intercooler and intake......steeda throtle body and spacer, and MRT exhaust......now at 405 Hp with 450 ft lbs......it beats Scat Packs......sitting on 245 Toyo Proxy ST 3s.....245s are what my 2002 Mustang GT came with in high-school......

Nice build, I’ve been building one for my wife. So far upr catch can, Cvf intercooler, thermal 3 in cat back. Cvf downpipes are going on next week, and I’m on the list waiting for SB to send me my intake. I looked at a lot of different tunes, and yeah ZFG is probably the best, but seeing as it’s for my wife I felt going with Jdm Engineering for the tune was the best route. Gonna add the tune once the downpipes are installed, should be putting down around 430-440 whp on 91.

I'll attest to JDM Engineering's Tune...
My 2001 ST is tuned by JDM, which is the only mod I've done thus far.
Best 0-60 run is currently 4.1 seconds.
Best 1/4 run is currently 12.5 @ 106 mph.
My second planned mod will be an Intercooler, to hopefully improve the top-end.

Thanks goodness someone finally realizes the 10 spd is too much going on. My wife has an 8spd in a Q5 s-line and it is almost perfect for a daily. A true drag car 2 or 3 speed maybe 4 if you drive on the road.

I haven’t heard there’s fake sound? It’s quite loud, I don’t think it needs any artificial noise haha!

Enhancement) to get rid of the fake engine noise. You should actually leave ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) on as it helps keeps the cabin quieter.Dec 29, 2022

Are the 2020 models reliable engine and transmission wise? They're in my price range but I'm scared of first year release vehicles.
From what has been seen so far, yes they are reliable! Much more than the explorers used to be!
My 2020 is very reliable
Mine had what they call sticky gears, if I hammered it around 40-45 mph it would grind the gears. It was just a software issue but it took two dealers to fix it. Now it’s a blast to drive. That and the backup camera would go blue they fixed that also. Love the vehicle now.
One more item with the early ones. They used a thin pipped trans cooler that can crack and
Leak out the fluid ruining the trans. They seem to be upgrading these no charge as a recall. I bought my car six months ago used as a gold certified and it was already taken care of. Make sure has been done or get it done right away.

Most likely! It could probably be de-tuned and put all back to normal though. (Also I’m not the owner, so I could be wrong)

I can’t say for sure, might not have been long enough to really know quite yet! But Ford did great with this new engine, it’s MUCH more reliable than previous generations thus far!
My F-150 Ecoboost with just a E50 tune will do 0-60 in 3.8 seconds.

@@Louthemailmanwell I mean, for one, my truck is factory everything except for a tune. So $600 to make it do that. Which is pretty damn good. Obviously a supercharged V8 has a lot more potential but you’ll have to pay big bucks to get there. $10k for the blower kit, and then comes install… that’ll put the truck at a little less than 100hp more than a tuned ecoboost. But it can be turned up with supporting mods like oil pump but with that power you’ll really need to upgrade the suspension and brakes. Throw $50k at it and you can get the truck into the 8s. It’s not really comparable.
I’d lower it. Put wider wheels. I’d murder the streets haha.

All in for my full build I have a 12 second flat quarter mile 4700LB SUV for 52k including what I paid for the Explorer and what I paid for mods. Fully loaded it's an excellent daily and hurts a LOT of feelings. Only ones who talk shit haven't witnessed it irl. At least I don't have to worry about theft with this over a Mopar nor do spend 75k plus for a Trackhawk. 450 to the wheel on 93 and 520 to the wheel on e50 mix.
