I just bought a Blackhawk Convertible in 45ACP/Colt. It's my first revolver and I love it! Shoots like a dream! The Blackhawk can handle stout +P Long Colt rounds! Underwood warns not to shoot those loads out of the Vaquero! Thanks for sharing!
Original "old" Vaquero will do +P just fine, it's the same exact frame (as shown in this video). "New Vaquero" - the official name of the model - is a small frame and not safe for them.
try the underwood 135 grain 45 super rounds out of the blackhawk convertible them rounds are pushing 1,500 fps and run great out of that revolver, i wish they made a 460 rowland cylinder that came with it, would be interesting too shoot out of that revolver
@@roycesjourney37 I would not. .460 is 40kpsi . Linebaugh says 80% of .44 Mag SAMMI Max pressure (40kpsi) is safe for the Blackhawk. 5 shot cylinder is what you need.
To all New model Vaquero owners be careful of the +P / magnum loads of the 45 LC. The cylinder is thinner than the older model Vaquero and Bisley. Keep your tool clean and inspect regularly. Hickok45 has a wealth of knowledge and covers so much of the sport. Just great
My buddy has a Blackhawk in .30 caliber carbine with 7-1/2" barrel and man that's a heck of a gun. Very accurate and you notice the blast when you fire it. I haven't seen this guy in over 20 years and wonder how he gets ammo for it cuz you never see it in the stores, but what a nice shooter.
I've got a Cimarron SAA clone (5.5") that came from the factory with both a .45 Colt and a .45 ACP cylinder. Love that gun. It shoots dead on for both windage and elevation at the ranges I shoot, and does so for both cylinders.
I have 2 of those. One with a 5.5" barrel, and one with a 7.5". I also had trigger jobs done on both by their gunsmith. Holy cow, they are crisp and light. 45 acp ammo is a lot cheaper to shoot than 45 Colt.
I have never owned a Blackhawk but I do have a Vaquero in .45LC. I always load six, because I know the Ruger Vaquero design is safe to carry with a round "under the hammer". If I had a Colt or one of the European clones I would never carry with a round under the hammer because I do value the safety and sanctity of my toes ( and other body parts ). Fun video! It's always good to see someone shooting the old SA revolvers.
I was given one by my uncle for me to keep and restore since it was under salt water for a day from the past couple of hurricanes we had. Finish is gone and didn’t think a week of salt water and no cleaning could do so much.
I love the single actions Rugers. I have two of the new model vaquero's. I have been involved in cowboy action shooting since 2014. Thank you for these videos, they never get old. VJ
🔹 Non-Fluted vs. Fluted Cylinders on the Ruger Blackhawk Convertible (.45 Colt / .45 ACP): What's the Difference? 🤔 I've come across various theories on why Fluted Cylinders became the go-to choice, but here's the one that sticks out: 👉 Fluting was designed to make it easier to align the Cylinder by touch 🔄, allowing for manual indexing with the loading gate - particularly handy for single-action army (SAA) revolvers. This can be a real lifesaver in low light or even in total darkness! 🌌 The grooves in a Fluted Cylinder create a quick, tactile guide for easy, precise alignment, giving you confidence and control when handling your revolver.
Probably to tell them apart easier. The non-fluted 45 Colt has beautiful engraving on it. And can likely handle more pressure with the extra metal around the chambers. Fluting reduces weight by removing material where it's not needed.
I've had a 4 5/8" since 1979, blue with a Super Blackhawk gripframe. Had Ruger put their highest front sight on it. It's got a bit of blue wear. Still shoots as great as ever.
Can't wait, scored a blackhawk 1982 45lc/45acp last week on gbroker, thanks hickock! Can't wait to bring it home, thank you CO for the 3 day wait. No moon clips required for the 45acp, not sure why the seller added them in the box.
I recently shot this gun and was impressed. Not as much recoil as you would imagine and it handled very well. I do think they could come with better sights
Thanks for that video. i have the Black Hawk convertible with the plow handle, polished, with the pearl looking grips on it. It is suppose to be 1 of 500 made by Lipsey. I love mine and it is the only single action pistol i have.
The Convertible Black Hawk used to also come in .357 Mag. /9mm . I've had 2 Super Black Hawks over the years 1 Old Model and 1 New Model .I'd still have one but I sold it about 25 years ago when my Daughter had Cancer.
When l was 14 l traded a marlin bolt gun in 22 magnum for a Remington Model 30 in 30 06 the model 30 used an Endield type action. I took the Remington to a local Smith to have some holes some dummy had drilled into the action to mount scope ring bases to the action. One hole was drilled right thru model number stamp. The gunsmith wanted the rifle and he offered a New Model Blackhawk 45 convertible or a Winchester Big Bore 94 in 375 Winchester in trade. Both guns were mint condition. I took the Blackhawk. That was in 1985. That Winchester is worth a pretty price now and the Blackhawk is well worn probably been fired 15 to 20 thousand times with everything from ACP target loader to heavy 300 grain handloads. Gun still functions perfectly and has but down numerous varmints one Black Bear and six Whitetail deer. I sent it back to the factory in 91 and had the 7.5 inch barrel swapped for a 4 5/8 inch barrel. They charged 35 bucks to do that back then and shipped it back for free. They won't that for thier customers anymore. I like the Bill Ruger produced guns better than most of the new stuff they produce. But l do pack a Ruger 1911 these days.
I have the convertible .45 in blue, and the first thing I did was order the wood grips. Just couldn't do plastic on a single action. And when my wife asks me about it, I tell her that Hickok45 shamed me into buying a revolver. Though, now I own a few.
Have a 45 colt/45 Acp Blackhawk 5-1/2" barrel love it reload for both the 45 Acp cylinder is a little finicky on the taper crimp use a Wilson gage to check function.
A .45 convertible Blackhawk was the first centerfire firearm I purchased myself. Have fired some pretty hot "Ruger Only" .45 Colt loads out it, but there's just something to a big ol' .45 revolver in ACP as well to the point that I had considered adding the S&W 625 JM as a double-action option. Ultimately, I kept my DA revolvers .357/.38, but I still love hitting the range with my Blackhawk, Single Six Hunter and Bond Arms derringer for some single-action fun.
My first hand gun was a Blackhawk convertible in 357/9mm, it’s the standard (plow handle) model and I really like it. It’s actually a 3 in 1 gun as you can also shoot 38 special. I’ve wanted a 45 convertible with the Bisley grip and stainless finish for a long time and finally found one and could manage the purchase at the same time. I’ve yet to try it out but it’s definitely a beautiful piece, it’s exactly like the one Sheriff Hickok was shooting. My hands are fairly small so I think it’ll be nice to shoot, Thanks for sharing your experience.
I tried finding one of the stainless versions but couldn't find one I ended up having to buy an older version blued Blackhawk Bisley 7.5 barrel with the engraved cylinder it's a really nice shooting gun. I mainly shoot standard SAA loads in it but played with some hot Ruger loads in it as well wow the hot rounds are crazy in it! Thanks for another wonderful video as usual sir.

I bought it because being left-handed I'm known for going against the grain. So no .44 Magnum for me. The .45 ACP, on the other hand, was as an insurance policy against hand-loading up a batch of .45 ACP only to find out that it gave my auto-loaders indigestion. Over the years I've gotten rid of a fair number of guns. My Blackhawk has never once even come close to the chopping block, because I love having a useful, versatile gun that harkens back to the days of the Old West. I have a Ruger New Model Black Hawk Convertible 45 Colt/45 ACP back in 2000 or so. Love it. I just bought a .357/9mm Blackhawk convertible, the .357 cylinder has 0.008 endshake, the grip fitment is atrocious, the casting marks under the cylinder area are horrendous, plus the machining on the rear of the frame near the pawl is super rough. The loading gate was super loose and i had to stretch the spring to get it to tighten up. Ontop of all that one of the screws came stripped due to excessive threadlocker they put on them from the factory, or whatever that plastic compound is on the threads, i think its nylock they call it. If you buy one, inspect the hell out of it before you accept it.
I purchased one of these Bisley grip convertible 45’s back in ‘04/‘05 I was told the stainless one was a non catalog one of three hundred limited run, don’t know if that was true or not but it shoots great ! Mine is identical to the one here except it has rosewood grips. I also have the Ruger P90 so it nice load up some ACP and take both out with the same ammo.
Another diff between the new model blackhawk and the new vaquero is the blackhawk will take the ruger only 45 colt load pressures that will blow up the gun if used in the new model vaquero. The redhawk in 45 colt will handle those pressures as well. My bear load for my redhawk and new model blackhawk pushes a 325 grain bullet at 1190fps for 1022 foot pounds of energy.
