I had a marvellous time speaking with Francis Buckley, is there anyone in the industry you would like me to interview?
Eric Ratz
David Bottril and one of the Tool songs
Brendan O'Brien, bitch vig
Rob Cavallo about producing Green Day
TCHAD BLAKE! Also, would love to hear about flood, butch vig, or Alan moulder re:smashing pumpkins
It's amazing that I can wonder how this song was produced and just find it like this thanks Warren 😭
Thanks ever so much
Not many people openly invite people back when doing this type of thing so he is definitely a genuine good guy who likes to share his time with people and also tell some stories.
I love the psychological aspects being treated as an integral part of the process of creating a song. Fascinating insights and I have to admit to binge watching these.
This is great! 2 in 2 days, love this series and love hearing more of the tracks on this
Thanks ever so much Alex! You Rock!!
I'm a filmmaker, but I learn so much from your interviews as an artist. Music and producing are really similar to filmmaking as a collaborative effort. How can you be an artist and make a performance that makes people react? How masterpieces get together? How do you inspire or push artist to create something unique? I like these behind the scenes snippets because they give me so much inspiration making art in everyday life. Your interview with Michael Beinhorne helped me to understand Chris Cornell much better. It's really great to see your interviews. Brendan O'Brien, Butch Vig, Andy Wallace would be really interesting to hear. Keep going on.
Warren why isn’t this 2 hours long! the guy would’ve spoke for ages if you’d have let him mate 😂 loving these videos though 👌🏻
Thanks ever so much my friend!
Hey it's the Ride guy that kept calling a pop filter a windscreen. Nice! This album is one of my fave productions! Thanks for the interview W!
I've waited over 20 years to hear these conversations! "Jagged Little Pill" sold over 33 million albums worldwide... Simply amazing.
I should've been one of those. I put it on my wishlist for christmas, but my dad bought that aweful record she released after. The one with "Thank You India" on it, i believe
This Album is a must have for any music fan. Never too late to pick one up today!
@@krisberntzenyou must be tripping cuz that album is freaking awesome too, out of the understanding of a kid tho
When I was 6 years old, (1986)I saw Alanis sing "O Canada" at the opening of the Canadian Civilisation Museum in Ottawa (now called the Canadian History Museum). My class was sitting next to the stage, I saw her take the stage and fell in love with her voice. I remember I almost cried because it was so beautiful then RAW then back to beautiful.
Cheap mic, bad PA, No reverb, no effects and it sounded larger than life. Alanis is truly an artist.
........and I thought 1995 she came from punk rock😆
The main reason why I love this channel, genuine passion for music and artists. Thanks Warren and Francis.
Thanks ever so much my friend!
Being the drummer, I know the pressure of everyone sat around waiting for you to do your bits. I know if I'm on take three or four I start to tense up which shows in the performance.
Edited the same ending as 'You Oughta Know', well, I suppose it was the same session in reality. On a serious note, this second instalment had some really excellent insight - yet again - into recording experience, advice and tales, there wasn't a fantastic amount of 'the song', but somehow I was still caught up in Francis' passion and eager involvement and I caught a good glimpse of something so, so important - work quickly and capture the moment - and it really rammed home something: The engineer & producer sometimes need to almost be so far ahead and yet invisible in their operation, As ever, cheers for the time spent
Never truly appreciated how good Alanis' voice is, damn. Always loved the backing harmonies on this song as well.
I love that Warren just sits back and let's the dude talk
ABR! Hahaha... Fantastic! Thank you ever so much Warren and Francis! I really enjoyed these two episodes! 👍🎵
Short and very sweet! Looking forward to the studio tour and more time with this gentleman! :D
I think i'd rather hear how You Oughta know was made....the ironic thing about Ironic is there are no ironic situations in the song, Alanis does not know what irony is. That's ironic!
Haha indeed, how Ironic! Haha
She always said she did know the meaning , but I remember at the time she got loads of stick over her lack of ironic situations ,in the lyric
awesome video, when Produce like a pro puts out a new video no fear in thumbs up before I watch.
One of my favorite albums of fall times. As mentioned in the interview, when it came out it was (and it still is) raw, passionate and exciting.
I was at work when I heard the 1st single the 1st time. I had to stop working, and just listen :)
All the best.
Now I’ll have to add “that’s what the bus is for” to “ Remember me ? From the bus. Of course I’ll buy you a pizza.” Super interesting! Thanks!
Loving this series! I have to point out however that he is incorrect about the microphone. Glen didn't use a 47 on her, it was a vintage C12 that was used to track her vocals for this album (and all of her albums except Under Rug Swept which used a C12 VR). This is documented in numerous places by Glen and also by Chris Fogel.
Of course it's all about....."capture the performance!"
Yes!! It certainly is!
"That's why they get paid for" :D best quote ever!
nothing in the song is "ironic" a college professor went through it and said that, but is it "ironic" that nothing ironic is in the song called ironic, so does that end up making it "ironic" ? ,
I'd love to see you go through some early Placebo stuff
Thank you Francis and Warren! 🙂
For sure! Always be Recording! That's the deal after the second take, you can get good technically flawless performances, but it's rare to maintain the freshness. You don't want people to hear you thinking while you sing. If you can go away and maybe record it again in a week, without over thinking it like a one take live performance then sometimes you can get something better. It's just how it goes. New material is never gonna be as full of fireworks and still technically spot on, as a song that's been taken on the road long enough to develop dynamics in the interactive live moments, so that then it can be done without so much consciousness applied to remembering every technical thing. Still people love new stuff, so it needs to keep being made, and added to repertoire. This is what I'm thinking but trying not to think about every time I record! Hahahahahahaha! I gives me empathy for anyone else recording. A nice swim, long walk, and a handful of chocolate beforehand. Heeheehee!
Fascinating.... Thank you.
ALWAYS BE RECORDING oh Hell yeah Preach it Francis!
Francis definitely seems like a good dude but, man,....he can talk. Would have liked to hear more of the tracks -- great stuff still -- thanks Warren.
Warren, these videos are priceless gems, please please keep them coming! Oh and also, we need some Queen ones ;-)
These vids are all priceless man. Would LOVE some 80's/early 90's Bryan Adams in the future!
Thanks ever so much my friend!!
P.S Great idea!
"Grace by Jeff Buckley" whould be lovely!! Love your programs. // C.M-Consitt/ Dynamic Recordings Sweden 👍
Really cool so great you did this song.
Blame Canada lol
What awesome insights !!!
Loved when he said he always hits record. We mainly record ourselves but do record other bands too. Over the years we learned to always hit record. We'll usually just tell ppl we're going to do a practice run. But we always record it. Lots of times it's the best take. Ppl don't usually get as nervous when they think it's just a trial run.
She single-handedly taught an entire generation a wrong definition of irony. Irony is sometimes funny, sometimes tragic and often not even noticed. But rain on your wedding day is NOT irony. Filing for divorce on your wedding is irony. A fly in your wine is gross, not ironic. Don’t ya think?
But thanks for digging into this song. I do love these videos.
Isn't that irony tho
@@jeremyturner745 Yes! An entire song defining irony that has no irony in it. Game point to Alanis and Glen!
@@BigDancin lol
look at the man move on the board ahahahahaha you got to love it . thank you Warren
Isn’t It Consequential? Don’t you think...I dated a young woman who played this album on an endless cassette loop in her car.
Didn’t Chris Fogel record and mix Jagged Little Pill? Why is there no mention of that in this?
I wish I had only 1 percen,t of his mixing skills. 😀you are great. I always thought Alanis Morissette came from punk rock and became commercial with Jagged Little Pill. Nobody here in Europe knew her in 1995. Greetings from germany...😊
Make an Interview with Wallace, on Linkin Park Hybrid Theory!
The organ track was credited to Michael Thompson (not the guitar player of the same name). Mike has played and toured with Don Henley and The Eagles for the last twenty years. And you'll never meet a nicer guy.
Who is the Glen they keep talking about?
Glen Ballard the co writer and producer
this is another Great one cheers
A wonderful job. And even more wonderful is the fact that they share it. Excellent interview. Thanks Warren!
Wish there would have been a little more emphasis on Alanis but that was still a great episode.
The song was written without a dictionary :D
Isn't that ironic
@@MS-df2fk don't you think ?
Take one goes back to the early recordings. Jazz 50s rock. HEY Bill Hailey rock around the clock!!!!!!!!! Tell me a Breyer feel good song than that?
Francis Buckley is a really interesting Bloke! Nice work Warren :)X
Dammit man. I’m that guy. I wish they would have played more of the song and did less talking.
Great video still though.
Ed Lucas lol. Yeah. All $0.00001 you got from my view.
I just have always loved this album. I could listen to the multi tracks all day long on loop.
Awesome content. It really inspires me to learn more about techniques.
When will we get more stories from under said bus?...
It's what the bus is for, I'm told ;)
Amazing video. But please wazza... Embrace the grey. Ditch the just for men! All the greats are grey now.
I love these thanks!
Agreed....the record never sonically matched the performances. Not a great sounding record by any means, but a terrific piece of art/music history!!
Yes, yes, everybody, we know Alanis’s concept of what irony actually is was shaky at best, but she was 19 when that song came out. I was never a big fan of it, but Alanis and I are the same age and it was smarter than anything I wrote back in 1993.
I just wish she'd got some better examples of irony... or even just one example of irony.... for the lyrics.
If you want to be a successful engineer, then learn the gear well enough to be able to record a musician on the first take. It's not that hard. Just know gain staging well enough so when you hit record it's not distorted or noisy. Learn how to work a preamp and a limiter, and you'll be well on your way to recording great signals that can then be shaped in many ways by a mixer later. And every "rough mix" you do, treat it like it will end up on a record, because it just might.
Really great stuff here!
I really appreciate the admiration for the craft in your eyes when he works the faders. True passion and love for music is impossible to hide when you are caught up in the moment. Excellence!
Another great episode. So many basic, important truths...record everything, always be ready, don't get in the way (of the artist or the song), 1st take is almost always great, etc. I wish I had been able to see this video way back when I started recording/mixing. It took me years to figure that "simple" stuff out. Thanks for another great one. Peace.
the vocals on the first verse definitely do not sound like the finished version
On the bus with Francis on the GML... a truly beautiful piece of kit. Fascinating to hear about making classic tracks during the time of significant change in the industry. As always, thanks for giving us the opportunity to hear more from Francis.
What a great dude. So many cool little stories on top of the main subject.
Shows how a perfect song and a great performance well captured sounds fantastic with any combination of stems just pulled up and combined with minimal effort. A lesson for us all!
Here we have a song titled "Ironic" and none of the examples given in the lyrics are ironic at all. Was Alanis having the last laugh?
« I can’t imagine even recording Keith Moon... » lol
Great interviews, as always! Thank you so much!
Sooo much valuable info in such a short video!! Great stuff! Thank you very much, Warren and Francis! :-)
Thank you, Warren and Francis,
It was amazing to hear the elements of this track pushed up as loud as they were!
There are sounds I can't recall hearing on the release.
Fantastick 👍
Warren; best one yet! Really great! Thanks for everything!
Another interview knocked out the park. Chapeau!
What a treat Francis Buckley at his console thank you PLaP!
I like this guy (Francis Buckley), down to earth and make a lot of sense. Thanks Warren!!

I miss Rode's studio rescue!
Tori Amos

Any song and anybody whom had something to do with those albums
Three Eyes Of Mine I binged on Tori after the first snippet of hearing her. "Things are gonna change so fast, ..."
We wore the first five albums out on old school table games and dinners at my place, then storm chasing in my friend's Forerunner! 😃 I also love Ben Folds Five.
Throw em under the master bus
Haha yes indeed!
Lovely
Thank you.
Awesome
The Rode NT give away guy...:) Studio acustik!!!...:) Nice, love it....
Would have loved to hear some detailed examples of what was so poor about the engineering since the album had tons of accolades.
