  • In the last of my trio of wind videos, I explain how to fly the Mavic Pro safely in winds and disable the Obstacle Collision Avoidance Sensors to maintain speed and stop you being blown off course.
    Many of the tips apply to flying any drone in windy conditions and will help avoid flyaways; whether it's your DJI Mavic Pro, Air or Spark, there are risks you can reduce when flying in strong winds.
    Last minute of the video is flying around the road to Moab, Utah... One of our favourite States....

    Good tips Ian, thanks. If I could add one more: record everything (high winds or not). At least if it does get blown off course or can't make it back, you have a video on your phone which might help you find it.

    Great informative video! But, I have to add; if you fly in windy conditions it is wise to also check that the RTH obstacle avoidance is turned off. If not, you could have issues if the controller looses connection and it RTH upwind! The speed will be lower, and the drone could have issues returning to home (and regaining signal) Not fun having no video-feed and no drone coming back because it struggeling fighting back upwind...

    I watched this person today nearly loose his Mavic as it gained altitude of 500m trying to fly back over water, I said to him it was a pitch issue, hopefully he finds your video. Good explanation 👍

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  6 лет назад +1

      500m is an insane height! I reckon he had his RTH altitude set to that by accident....

    • @FIntel-nk2bs
      @FIntel-nk2bs 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah he reckons it wasn't. And said it was set to 120m. I did spot it returning and to me it did appear to be climbing into the clouds and it was heading into the wind 19kh wind However I'd be more likely to trust your experience. If the height is set then even fighting the wind it shouldn't go above the set height of 120m of course your probably right.

I noticed like myself as soon as any trees come to view you take the drone up and well clear, whilst watching I had to pause and research Britains tallest trees . Which come in at 61 mtrs though in the South there's not too much over 50mtrs. Im a new Dronie and have flown through all weather during this winter to get the hang of things...still in one piece !

    Thanks for the excellent video. This is very important in my opinion. I watched a video a while back where a guy flew out over the water going with the wind, and he didn't realize how much slower and battery time he'd use up coming back, against the wind. He ended up not quite making it. It was only a quarter mile or so off shore coming back, but it went down in the water, and I don't think he was able to retrieve it. Good to know this stuff. Marc.

The mavic refused to drop down, it eventually ran out of battery and i panicked and literally swiped it out of the air with my hand!. Now i have a rear motor out. Funnily enough the only way i could control it was sideways which i suppose was due to the sensors being on!. Great explanation. Subscribed.

    Hi Ian ,I took my Mavic Pro out for a flight last week because I wanted to get some shots of a large ocean liner that was stationed just off the westcoast here in Barbados and when I was heading out to the boat about half way out I decided to try bringing the mavic back in against the wind to see how it would do coming back and that thing took so long to get back to me that I was so happy I didn't take her all the way out to the ship cause I believe I would have lost it , man I am not taking my baby in strong winds again atleast not knowingly but if the wind picks up while I am out then there is nothing I can do cause I already lost one of my birds that way and I am trying hard not to loose my mavic cause she is too expensive,my cx20 was a fraction of what the mavic cost so I am trying hard to keep this one for a long time ,loosing three birds so far has become too expensive for this poor guy.Anyway Ian,take care and thanks for the great review .

Already checked the prevailing wind and picked my takeoff point, was planning to use sports mode to punch into the wind, but will try switching the sensors off instead. (appreciate that this would not be an issue if the advice to fly against the wind first is observed)

    The difference in speed between going and back, may indicate the at least the minimum real realtive ground wind speed. I mean "relative" because the drone not necesary may be flying straight ahead to the wind, and the wind may be hiting from the side that is not the same.

    Thanks for the advice, what was the wind speed when you did this video? When I flew in high winds (even low and close) I encountered constant "disconnected" errors and even "RC disconnected", is that a result of the high winds? (Did not have OA turned off or Sport mode enabled) so thank you for the tips.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  6 лет назад

      Hi Lawrence. It was at least 25mph solid with 40 mph gusts. A very windy day. Were you flying the Pro or the Air? Either way, high wind shouldn't normally affect the RC connection to the drone... Have you tried the same flight path in the same location on a calm day?
      Ian

    • @LawrenceBlackbeard
      @LawrenceBlackbeard 6 лет назад

      No, I havent been back there but now you have me worried as to why it happened? I do no that the cell reception was very poor and intermittant, perhaps that was disrupting the signal but surely the drone should still fly without cell signal? I have since flown the drone and have not had another problem as yet, so what could it have been - if not the wind? Perhaps the buffeting, was conflicting with the OAvoidence, as you said?

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  6 лет назад

      @@LawrenceBlackbeard Then I think it's almost certainly radio interference. There are some areas that I get appalling signal a d frequent disconnects each time I fly. @CatalinBogdan 5 лет назад

      Hi Lawrence. I got a lot of "disconnected" errors while using an android phone. Since I started using the iPad, I've never got any of those. Only once I've got a RC disconnected, probably due to interference or, more likely, poor signal.

      Ian in London Thanks, I’ve given it a watch, another great video. I remember is your video about what went wrong in Dover you said that after your emergency landing the drone lost the remote signal and took off again ultimately causing you to loose it. How would you avoid that?

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  6 лет назад +1

      Ah, true, but Dover was an exceptional number of errors and bad luck all lined up. The reason it took off again is simply because I didn't check the props had stopped and shut down. I held the left stick down for 3 seconds but in my panic, ran away from the cliff edge, losing signal connection before the 3 secnds down had happened... So as it lost signal before shutdown, it took off again. You'd have to be insanely unlucky to recreate that scenario.... Cheers, Ian
