Sometime, if you want to be impressed by Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce people, look for the map of their journey to the point of Joseph's final surrender. It is astounding what the did given what they had to work with. As I become familiar with more and more of Howard Terpning's work, the more I feel his deep and abiding respect for Native American peoples. As a painter, when you can capture a feeling you have really accomplished something significant. His use of the light and how it falls on his subjects is a big part of delivering the impact that each painting or drawing carries. His depiction of weathered buffalo hide, for example, uses color and shadow to convey the 'aging in weather' aspect of the material. With the 3 prints that I have, I find I am rewarded every time I look at them.
Your storytelling through your art touches my heart. We have been unfair to indigenous people all over th world. I am not proud of the terrible things we have done to our own Native Americans. :(
As an Indigenous American myself...you did a fine job of portraying Chief Joseph and his people and their tragedies. Tragedies that have bemoaned all Indigenous all throughout these lands and any and all recognition of this is justified. Quyannasinaq!
I think it represents the history of what we know now as the usa. what an incredible beautyful painted piece of art. thank you for sharing this with us.
Mr Terpning , I believe you have a Castle being made in Heaven. You are Amazing . I got a tear and felt this moment of silence in awe of sympathy for the Indians when I finished seeing your clip and paintings on you tube. . The other day I received another package full of items from a thrift shop , from time to time I get them and donate Items out to the church, next door ,and some of the things I keep. Well I came across a Old West Collectors Series Portrait of Chief Joseph, and I wanted to set down and learn who he was, then I came across who you are , and what you do .. That is awesome, I know you must be an inspiration to any and all Indians from that point on who have survived and carried on through the generations! I believe you have a castle being made in heaven for you and all you're family for what you do , and at the same time you also love your talent , and so Lets give thanks to God right now! Glory to God and And seeing your art , and portrays. I have always wanted to be a photographer , I think I have a real talent in some ways too , as far as photography and visualizing special moments, I know I have the passion for it . You are very blessed. In Jesus name Amen. Christian , Joy Lynn , Dallas Tx.

Don’t paint for judges. Paint for eternity.
I have one!
Author,TJ Stiles, is working on a biography of Chief Joseph. Keep an eye out for its publication!
I am from Germany. The painting is not sad, it is touching, if you know the circumstances. I would love to have it in my home.
a great historical painting. easei to see the strugling of a defeated tribe, i would absolutje bye it.--- well if i had any money
Resimdeki tablo yüregimi ağlattı yerli halk bunu hak etmedi 😭😭
That was bad judging! You are supposed to judge on the merits of the painting.
