Chief Joseph surrenders

  • Chief Joseph made a promise to his dying father to never give up his peoples land where he would be buried. Joseph never signed a treaty giving this land to the US Government but they took it anyway. In an attempt to keep his people free he made a desperate run to Canada to join up with Sitting Bull. He came up 40 miles short. I wish he had made it.

    139 years ago today, 5 October 2016.
    .
"Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before, I have it in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our Chiefs are killed; Looking Glass is dead, Ta Hool Hool Shute is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led on the young men is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are - perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my Chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever."
Chief Joseph - Thunder Traveling to the Loftier Mountain Heights - 1877
    .
    Will

When he gave this speech it wasn't as chief of the Nez Perce, or a fierce warrior, it was as a man, a man who had seen too much pain and sorrow, too many young men killed on both sides, a man who had lost everything, and asks only to find his family. He did his duty to his father to the best of his ability, his warriors did their duty to their people, that's all one can ask of any soldier. It was a speech not between a victor and a vanquished, it was a speech between the men of two worlds who were in the end not so differenet, men who could've just as easily been friends. Joseph may have lost the war, but he fought for what he believed in as hard as any American can fight, a final salute to one of America's greatest leaders

    • @Max-nt5zs

What an incredibly ironic interpretation. He would without a doubt not consider himself an American and would probably be offended at the proposition.

The lead actor was excellent---if you don't cry then you've got a glass eye or a stone heart. The Nez Perce have bounced back and are back on their land--Joseph would be proud of their resilience at everything a bully gov.'t threw at them--thievery, prison/boarding schools, crooked rez agents, etc etc. Here's to YOU Nez Perce people!!!

Thank you for sharing this. Did you know about the Trail of Tears? The first time I heard about it was when I was a freshman in college in Nashville, TN. @puren00b768 Good question. For Hollywood it was used so the audience could understand. Most Native Americans knew very little english. Chief Joseph was raised a Christian though so he was well versed in english. Check out the mini series INTO THE WEST. Whatever tribe is on screen they speak only their Native tongue

Thanks for posting this LoneWolf. I have read many stories and books about Chief Joseph, and he is one of the many Chief's I have admired. Have never understood why the U.S.Gov. were so set on not letting him and his people go to Canada. I agree that School Kids are taught so little of REAL U.S. History. The School's do not teach it, or they teach lies. This is one reason we Homeschool our 2 kids.

Probably a power trip. They had to have Joseph as their prisoner to prove that the white culture is superior to the Native American cultures. The very thought that any Native American people could escape the clutches of the U.S. cavalry was unthinkable to a white culture bent on Manifest Destiny and conquering the indigenous peoples.

This is the greatest Chief who ever lived and fought more soldiers than any other tribe. The only reason he did not make it was that he would not leave the old ones and sick that were left behind. He sent his family away and was never permitted to see them again. The government is still trying to destroy our lives. We are the only ethnic group that has to have a card stamped by the government to prove we are Indian. If you say you are they ask for the card to prove it.That happens even now.

Yes I had relatives that survived the Trail of Tears and some that hid out in the hills and would not go on it. What always bothers me is your statement that you didnt learn about it until college. NOT YOUR FAULT of course. Its the fault of the US Government and the teachers for not teaching its own people the truth. Why aren't the children learning this stuff in grade school? Because the government knows they where wrong and are ashamed.

I think it is because Natives get benefits, like access to land and stuff others don't. If there was no ID, anyone could claim Indian. I don't know if America is still trying to keep the Natives down. I'm 3/16 Alaska Native, so the situation up there is a little different than the states. And most of the time, people think I'm Mexican instead of Native.
