Wikipedia defines "Carbuncle" as "an abscess larger than a boil, usually with one or more openings draining pus onto the skin" That might be the reason he looks like a growth in FF3.

Shiny espeon from pokemon highly resembles carbuncle, and is very much why it is my favorite shiny pokemon.

In XIII, there's also the holographic Carbuncle that appears during the big FMV in Nautilus-- the "Pompa Sancta".

Little bit of a correction, or perhaps addition. In FF XIII, Carbuncle is more than a fal'Cie and doll. It is also a little... uh, hologram thingy used in the Pompa Sacta parade on Nautilus. It has dialogue and everything. You can find it at around 2:45 in this video: watch?v=QJOp6FHMFmw.

FF3 appearance could be based on the medical term of the same name of bacterial skin disease which are a series of boils that merged together.

You can add Ruby Carbuncle too. First appereance as a unique summon by Alphinaud (or Alisie?) and soon as an acutal summon by players, with melee DPS capabilities :)

Carbuncle is also a Yu-Gi-Oh! card called Ruby Carbuncle, which is a crucial card in any crystal beast deck.

LOL They really ran with Carbuncle being akin to the Eevee of the FF Universe. But you did forget the more lizard-like one in FF-Tactics, but since that game was set in a different period in Ivalice, perhaps that's why it's only referenced as an airship in FFXII.

Isn't it Carbuncle as well in FF XIII, which pops out of the disc that Vanille catches at the Pompa Sancta Parade in Nautilius? At least it looks like a Carbuncle (I think)
