  • Frontier, an ultra low-cost carrier, definitely doesn't have the best reputation. But when fleeing Hurricane Nicole, I flew Frontier's A321 back to Chicago. But many passengers weren't prepared for Frontier's bag fees. How can you avoid them and fly frontier? Let's find out.
I realized I forgot to talk about service. Yeah, nothing is free, not even water.
Ticket price last minute was $173 for the flight, $33 for the seat, and $51 for a checked bag.

My husband and I flew Frontier before the holidays; never again. We traveled to the East coast for a long weekend, Wednesday to Sunday, so we didn't need a ton of clothes. We each packed a backpack and measured them after packing to ensure they met the dimensions given on Frontier's website, which they both did. On the way there, we had zero issues on the first flight, but then came the connecting flight. While waiting in line to board, we were told that if we weure pulled aside, our personal item had to be put in the sizer and could not be pushed in, we figured there was nothing to worry about since both of our bags came in under the dimensions they gave us. As we were boarding, I was pulled to the side to size mine, while my husband was told to go through. Dumb old me put the book I was reading during the layover in my bag's front pocket instead of the main bag where it previously had been; when I went to size it, I was forbidden from taking the book out and my bag did not slide in, so I was told that I had to get in the ever growing line of people forced to pay for a carry-on. I told them it was just the book that I meant to read on the plane, they said it didn't matter and to get in line. I did and while there, I paid for the carry-on on the website. By the time I got to the counter, I showed them the updated itinerary, and they angrily printed me new boarding passes. The agent even tried to scold me for not waiting until she got to me and when I asked her why would I wait instead of speed up the process by paying online, she muttered something under her breath and sent me on my way. I then overheard some of the other passengers who were in line in front of me talking about how they had to pay $99 with the gate agent; I only paid $60 on the site. Also, I found out after the trip, that the gate agents make a $10 commission for each bag that they add the $99 fee to which explained the angry agents attitude when I showed her that I had already paid.

Yeah, I was wondering why my bag fit on the first leg but not on the 2nd leg of the frontier journey. Incentives to lie.
I didn't pay for my bag THAT FIT INTO THE SIZER but they made weaker or nicer or younger people pay. They prey on the weak. Disgusting and abhorrent behavior.

I’m a disabled senior didn’t realize I had a 4 1/2 hour layover so in pain I go to their customer service and ask if she could please look up another airline somebody I don’t mind Pain I need to fly out sooner she tells me only United and 20 minutes before so you’re stuck with us. Yes, if you don’t like it, go to the kiosk and check upon looking at the kiosk, I see that there’s four airlines and six flights going out between when I was to fly so I went back and asked the young lady why she chose to lie to me. She told me to get out. if I didn’t like it, I could go to the kiosk and check myself. It’s not her job. I reminded her not only am I a senior, but I’m a disabled senior, and the first time I was saying I was in so much pain that she asked me if she could call the paramedics I said no my medication is in my bag I just want to get home please when she told me to get out and go to the kiosk and check myself it’s not her job I asked her not to talk to me like that please my grandkids don’t talk to me like that my kids don’t talk to me like that that’s rude and disrespectful. She said if I don’t like it fly another airlines. Oh, wait a minute it’s a matter fact you’re not lying or airlines what’s your last name you’re not flying out I said excuse me no you can’t do that I paid for my ticket back in February. This is April she said I don’t care you’re not flying out on our airlines go find another airlines I walked out and there’s a mocking out she’s yelling at me to give her my last name under my breath, I told her she can kiss my ass. Yes, I did say that, but she’s telling me she’s not going to allow me to fly so I walked over to the gate told the other person what happened? She apologizes and gives me another boarding pass I said are you sure I wanna get home I’m in pain I just wanna go home. She said not a problem 4 1/2 hours pass. I’m crying. thinking I’m going to get home as I am boarding she pulls me off the airlines and says go see my manager you can’t board. I go over to the manager and she says I told you give me your last name but you didn’t think you would so I’m going to show you how much authority I have. I started crying and said please please I’m sorry whatever I did. I’m sorry I will drop to my knees and apologize to all these people as passengers are telling her to please let me on the plane she says no I’m going to show you how much authority I have your baggage is going and you are not go find you another airlines as I then went to their customer service. The guy says what let me go talk to the manager he took over 25 minutes he comes back and says up she said you can’t fly but for the inconvenience I’ll rebook you and not charge you. I started crying and said you realize I have a doctors appointment at eight in the morning I’m a disabled senior in my medication is in my bag on your plane I said well there’s nothing I can do our next flight out is Wednesday remind you that’s two days from the day I’m flying in the air at the airport I start really crying so what I need to get my bag and my medication he said well that’s the best I can do who the hell treats, disabled seniors like this who does this. United praise God hallelujah was the only one flying out. I didn’t have to wait another two hours. They cut my ticket in half. They felt so bad for me. Bottom line don’t ever go frontier they’re canceling a lot of their flights. Maybe they’re going under treating people like this would make people not fly. This was my first and my absolute last experience with frontier icy. They are GOD AWFUL l!!!! Do not fly this airlines do not for the extra couple bucks. You can have a much more comfortable seat and outstanding Customer Service if I could give United is a -10 I would.

Places like Frontier and Allegiant can be a good place to fly if you know how to pack your items. Don't come with huge heavy suitcases and not want to self tag thein complain about prices and who getting commissions. I fly with a 🎒 that fit with there rules not extra cost no commissions out my pocket. Be smart.

Agree. Saw it myself on April 4th. Flight 520 from Denver to Philly. They made my girls cry and they made some other man cry . Our bags fit into the sizer but not to the Frontier lady. They fit on 3 previous frontier flights, this was the last leg of our frontier journey, but now the bags no longer fit to this monster lady's trained eye. She abused people plain and simple. For money.
I refused to bend to her, to accept her lie and they eventually let us in. However, they made other people pay even though their bags fit into the sizer too.

Yeah I totally get that. I think part of the issue here was the mad dash for people to get tickets due to mass cancelations (MCO ceased operations at 3pm) so I think many people either booked or rebooked on frontier without really understanding what they were getting into. I also never use OTAs for booking, but I think places like Expedia sometimes do a poor job of explaining what you are getting with a LCC.

But, frontier hates these customers, so they makes them pay some other way: like for the bag that fits into the sizer. I know, they tried it with me on Tuesday this week. Flight 520 from Denver to Philly. We, the poor, do not go on the 435 am connecting flight because we have money. Frontier robs the poor people at the gate by making them pay for the bags that fit into the sizer. That's not okay.

I fly Spirit and Frontier ALOT. Spirit is easy going as long as your bag LOOKS like it'll fit the personal item sizer. When I flew Frontier in October I was told several times before I finished buying my ticket that now was the time to buy my carryon & checked bag...otherwise the price would go up. Perhaps because I was planning to fly with just a personal item, they kept emailing me to try to sell me that bag fee. When I got to my gate they announced several times to get passengers to purchase the bag fee on their app because it was their last chance to not pay the price at boarding. Still there was some woman who had two "personal items" (neither looked like they fit to me) who was trying to claim that she didn't know she would have to pay.

@@bun04yThere are people who try to cheat the rules and act defiant. I am all for people adhering to the rules, however, what's concerning is causing a flight to be more late just because you wanna be a bag police, or not allowing customers to push their bag into the sizer. Its one thing to force a obviously larger bag and risk it getting stuck in there. But to advise that you have to drop it in there and hope it will slide right in like the sizer is coated in oil is unnecessary. There are several instances when I use to work at the airport, where a bag is compliant with the size but the bag just needed a literal slight tap to get it to fall in fully due to the friction of the sides causing it to stop part of the way. Another issue I've seen is when customers take out their hoodie and put it on at the gate, thus allowing the personal item to fit in the sizer without a push. However the gate agents still refused to let them on unless they pay!
These fees are justified as they are upfront about it. Its the enforcement tactics that seem questionable and scummy.

Although I personally think it's always the customers fault for not reading what they actually bought, USD 99 is ridiculous! Ryanair charges (up to!) 69.99 EUR which I think is okay since you are regularly warned during the booking process with bright pop-ups that this penalty exists, but if Frontier doesn't do this I personally think that's very scamy, even though it technically isn't. And you also shouldn't forget that compared to Ryanair, Frontier's tickets are not that low-cost, at least in my experience.

Frontier had me in tears yesterday morning. Started out this odyssey with a 10:00 non stop from Las Vegas to Cincinnati. Within days they changed my flight to 6:00 a.m. which I could not do because I had to drive three hrs to the airport. So instead of letting me go back to the 10:00, my only choice was 1:00 with a stop in Denver. The 1:00 was delayed two hrs, missed the connection, and then was told that I had to stay in the airport 24 hrs for them to get me and my grandchild on their next flight to Cincinnati at 6:00 a.m. I paid to get a Delta flight out at midnight. I might get some of the Frontier tickets refunded, I still don’t know. The line was so long at the ticket counter (two agents to handle 55 people in line) that I couldn’t get my luggage off the delayed Frontier flight in time. Had to go home with no luggage. Had to get a few hours sleep then return to the airport to find my luggage. If you value your sanity--NEVER FLY FRONTIER!!!

Don’t forget that Frontier serves many out-of-the-way airports that the legacies don’t bother with. In the New York City area, Frontier serves Stewart (in the Hudson Valley), and MacArthur (out on Long Island). Many customers, like me, who live in the far-flung suburbs will do anything to avoid JFK, Newark, LaGuardia. If I’m forced to use the big airports, yes, I’d prefer a legacy carrier. I would rather fly North Korean Airlines than Frontier. Frontier is simply the worst. I've never seen a successful company that is hostile towards its customers. When we took our flight from Vegas to Detroit, I swear to God that after 4 delays, moving paying customers to front row seats for weight distribution, and the 90 out of 120 or so guests that were made to pay the $99 fee, I thought there was going to be a riot on the plane.

I hate low cost airlines, but when I do have to fly them, I believe spirt might be a little better. First Spirt have 48 dollars for a check bag if you pay early. There is bundles that include a carry on, and the size requirement is way bigger. Even if you don't buy it online, I think it's cheaper at around 60 dollars at the gate. The check bags also have the standard weight amounts. The seats are the same, but there is options with the big front seats in the front. ( large armchair that don't recline ) Also I don't think at least in Seattle, they have a person enforcing the baggage requirements, but that might be a Seattle thing.

I see it as karma if you show up to the gate with your bag and get stuck with a 100.00 fee. Honestly, if your ticket only costs a pittance, wouldn't you assume there would be a catch? How much was a ticket on United?

Um, they dont honor the Prepay of bags, seat selection fees or, carryon bag fees. When you get to the airpot they say you didnt pay them and make you pay again. Moreover, the recent angel seems to be to limit the kiosk abilities, as in, just entering a confirmation coe, you know the 6 digit alphanumeric, Now when you walk up the kiosk can only read a barcode from your phone, one generated by the app on your phone. If you cant produce the barcode, or haven't loaded the app on your phone, you will have to pay another fee to talk to a desk clerk. Great stuff, and you thought United sucks.

Walk away, losing what you’ve already paid for tickets, or plan to skip a few meals on vacation so you’ll be allowed on the plane? Vacation is supposed to be a happy time. On our upcoming trip to DR, we would pay $900 with AA and over $700 with Frontier with just one piece of luggage. We did not selected our seats and are not bringing carry one luggage plus we will be buying our snacks at the airport. Be aware and compare! I doubt, contact me to get you the quotes. Or you could fly a hybrid airline for less than that price if you timed your booking properly. Hybrid airlines offer cheaper flights than legacy airlines and some of them are arguably better than legacy airlines in terms of seat comfort and customer service. Though Jetblue did away with free carry-ons on select flights, they are still an amazing airline.

I’ve never really seen the point of ULCC carriers like Frontier and Spirit. Sure, there cheaper at first. Notice how I said at first. Because by the time you add everything up, the cost of fees could double or even triple your airfare. By that point you might as well go Southwest or hell even the big 3 airlines. Say for example I’m going from my home airport of Atlanta to Orlando. On March 4th, Frontier is $29. That may seem appealing but after adding seat selection ($29 a seat) Carry on bag w. Priority boarding ($74) and checked bag ($60) that the leads to $189! Not only is that ludicrous but doubly ludicrous in the fact that the base fare was $29, especially being 6x more expensive than the base fare. Southwest is only $94 one way from Atlanta to Orlando that day and that includes bags. Forget Southwest, for $129 I can just fly Delta. Just like how you mentioned in a previous video, a family of 4 going to Disney World will probably have bags and that would literally be more that Southwest or even Delta. That’s why I don’t recommend ULCC carriers. It’s also worth noting that I’m sure Ryanair doesn’t even charge $74 for a carry on bag.

    • @jeb4198
      @jeb4198 Год назад +2

ATL - MCO is a very competitive market, which means that the legacy carriers are both willing to fly that route and will price it reasonably to try and get passengers from the ULCCs. If you're flying to a secondary market, the only other options may be connecting itineraries, or (if you're lucky) a direct option that's still somehow multiple-hundreds-of-dollars more expensive.
I'd also argue that most people don't need a carry-on bag, priority boarding, and a checked bag - some might be willing to get by with a small personal item, while others may only need a carry on but not a checked bag. If it's a family, maybe you have two checked bags for four people, and each person gets half of the checked bag. Yes, that won't work for everyone, but for someone on a budget they may be willing to make that tradeoff.
That said, I've heard enough horror stories lately about Frontier in particular being extremely punitive, to the point where even passengers who have bags that can fit the personal sizer with a little bit of squishing are still charged because it doesn't easily fit into the sizer. Agents are also given a commission for each person they charge for an oversized personal item, which likely leads to them being overly strict about the rule.
