Liam Killen The reason you were only able to pitch up to +7 was because you had vinyl mode on. When vinyl mode is off (Hold Shift and turn Value Knob to turn Yes/NO or ON/OFF) you are able to pitch from -12 to +12. Pg 50 of fw2.0 manual. Hope this helps.

Just pair it with a simple synth (got the Roland S-1) and you got a powerful sequenzer/drummachine and synth combo that can sound very true to these genres. I'm just starting out, but fucking around and create simple, dark techno beats is my unexpected favorite jam with this.
Asides from future live performance, THIS is the kind of beats I really wanna do with it. I plan to use it for slower, nasty beats too, but this is gonna make a nice sketch pad for uptempo biz. Mine is arriving this week, and I cannot wait to play with it. Thanks for doing it different!

I am a 60 year old man who very late in life decided I want to learn electronic music production and even want to do live gigs. I have been a guitarist my entire life and also play MIDI guitar so not a total newbie to technology but basically a beginner when it comes to creating electronic music. I am putting together a home studio together and have enough money to buy a few pieces of gear in this price range, I have a Roland TR08s, TB-03 & Sh-01a. Also own a Moog Sub 37 I bought 7 years ago when I wanteds to learn to play keys with no interstes in electronic music production at all. I just wanted to sound like Keith Emerson or Rick Wakeman and blaze some pentatonix up and down the keyboard. I played the keys 99% of time never once using arpeggiator, sequencer etc. Now I find out it's a dope piece of gear for creating electronic music so now need to learn how to play the technology as much as the music theory. I am buying gear while I have the funds to do so and like small pieces of gear that could potentially be used in a live show. I use Ableton as my DAW, I have seen few setups on YT where the person has the TR-8s, MC-707 and the SP-404 and the stuff they were doing was epic. I already have the TR-8S so thinking this should be my next purchase even though I fully do not understand exactly how it works or why it's needed. Just too many people swearing up and down that this is their favorite piece of gear and an epic update to its predecessor. Just wondering your thoughts if this is a good investment knowing I am buying a piece of gear I truly do not understand how to use or setup in a workflow. But my intuition tells me if I keep watching YT videos the lightbulb will one day go on and I will go from uncertainty to gratitude for making this purchase. Plus I love small pieces of gear that do so much especially if it can also be used in a live setup once you understand the workflow. I would get a small rack for this, the TR-8s and MC 707 setup so for live gigs I would create live grooves with the Roland gear and than play guitar over the grooves I play so its both live guitar and electronic music. Real simple setup. Maybe add a delay & looper but don't need much more. Love to know your thought or any of your followers as I am ready to pull plug on this unit. Yes...GAS is a real mental illness and I got it bad. But I am an old fucker so if not now when? Also any other gear you can think off. I did all the Roland boutique synths and you can find them used for $300. Sorry for long post and thanks for any advice🙏
If you’ve got the time and patience- pull the trigger!! SP-404 mk 2 is in my opinion a choice sampler in 2022 + beyond. They keep dropping updates and the foundation of the instrument is also very solid.
I see this comment is pretty old but i fell into a similar category as you as a drummer/guitarist. I bought one of these and love it. Best gear as others have said. The sp404 can help you build full tracks with drums, bass, keys, guitar, etc. anything you “sample” (record) onto the SP can be used to build full songs of whatever genre you wish. Once you have all your samples recorded, arrange them in the pattern arranger and make full songs. It also has 35 built in effects with all the classics like reverb delay chorus phaser etc. I use mine to build backing tracks that I can jam over with my live instruments
I played guitar for like 15-20 years and bass and drums to a lesser degree. I've owned a few various groovebox/drum machine type things. Eventually I got an Elektron Syntakt and I really like working with it. I could imagine you may like working with a Digitakt. I feel like Elektron's -takt boxes filled my want to make electronic production feel more like playing physical instruments vs working in a daw. They're pricey but once I got it and took a few days to learn it I realized why ppl love the -takt devices so much. Something to consider if you're exploring options.
Liam Killeen! Can you try n give some nice jazzy liquid a try you reckon? Want to hear that sort of thing coming from an SP404 mk2. Check out a track called Mr Right On by Calibre for an idea of the type of thing I mean. Literally gorgeous, perfect liquid. The Bassline is sampled fro a Miles Davis track I think.

I am interested in the SP-404 MK2 and the Akai MPC Live 2, and trying to decide which to buy. I only have money for one of them. I would like to use in a live set up to playback recorded tracks, use as drum pad to create loops and create full tracks sequencing on stage. I also want to be able to use to create chunks I can put into a daw to create songs I can record and release, plus create my own drum samples. Am I asking too much or will one of these be what I want??? Would love to hear from you, or anyone on this please. Peace.

I didn't like the feel or workflow. The 404 was so much nicer to use. I think I'll look at a different dawless option in the future but for live, I've already got lots of ideas for if I buy the 404. My pads are not as sensitive as yours. Sometimes it does not even register that I hit a pad at all. Can I adjust the sensitivity of the pads? I think I must mention that I have not yet updated the firmware of my unit.
I have an mpc live 2 and looking to add some hardware. Is the sp404 good in pairing the two or it doesnt make sense? Which is easier to sample sp404 or the mpc?

I'm still waiting for my unit. I love making hiphop and house music but my main genre is electro-pop/alt-pop + myself singing with lyrics. I have big expectations for the mk2 to be an accessory not only to my beatmaking but also my SONGWRITING, which is super important to me. Making song sketches and recording and chopping up my guitar on the fly (like I would in Ableton) is the sole reason for why I bought my mk2.
The worst part about using RUclips to learn your gear is all the Lo-Fi and Trance demos you have to endure in the process. Those are literally your only options lol (no offense to fans of those genres) ✌️
I have literally zero interest in lofi hiphop and have been looking at getting one as a sort of super-versatle drum machine/general performance tool. A related thought that always occurs is that modern metal bands catch heat for playing to backing tracks for all their non-guitary instruments and they always defend it by saying words to the effect of they want to still have all the other stuff going on - and I always wonder why the hell they don't just have a band member playing a sampler. That way it's genuinely live and not just glorified karaoke and they still get to have all their other instrumental tracks.
Is there a shift function or something that would allow me to raise and lower volumes of a pad in a live setting without having to choose the pad and causing it to retrigger? I was also thinking about incorporating a midi controller with an encoder, assigned to a designated pad to bring in melodies. Raising and lowering the volume on the fly. I haven't found anything on that. Any info in that would be awesome.

There's no such thing as old school lofi hip-hop. It's an entirely contrived genre which mimics and to some extent caricatures the feel of several 1990s hip-hop producers (Madlib, Prince Paul, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock, etc), most of which remain uncredited in lofi circles in favour of unreasonable adoration of deceased producers like J Dilla and Nujabes. The genre is so detached from its roots that it feels more like cultural appropriation than a continuation of tradition.
This "traditional approach" is not it- i'm sure that all of the genres / artists that you just mentioned are also "detached" from some other genre that someone's being traditional about. If there are millions of people who listen to / characterize a genre by a name- it exists IMO. My 2 cents.

I deal with the same thing having an MPC 2000XL; mostly everyone uses them for beats while I make electronic music with mine

Can BPM ne set per group/pad rather than globally? For example, if I want my drums at 172bpm and my samples at 86bpm (50%)

You can do pretty much everything here with either unit! The only thing is that exporting options on the mk2 are not nearly as strong as MPC units.

They totallyyyy make sense- I would run the MPC through the 404 just for its multi FX alone. Highly recommend that sort of set up.

You can def get 2 headphone signals as your mentioning- I haven’t tried the M1s with my 404 yet so I can’t speak on this!

There's no such thing as old school lofi hip-hop. It's an entirely contrived genre which mimics and to some extent caricatures the feel of several 1990s hip-hop producers (Madlib, Prince Paul, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock, etc), most of which remain uncredited in lofi circles in favour of unreasonable adoration of deceased producers like J Dilla and Nujabes.
The genre is so detached from its roots that it feels more like cultural appropriation than a continuation of tradition.
This "traditional approach" is not it- i'm sure that all of the genres / artists that you just mentioned are also "detached" from some other genre that someone's being traditional about.
If there are millions of people who listen to / characterize a genre by a name- it exists IMO. My 2 cents.
