This is apples and oranges. Your own personal discord is a collective of people who already like you It’s like complaining that your singing didn’t go down as well when you did it in the town square vs at home with your family and friends
I don’t think that the hostility you are describing is down to folks reacting to what they perceive as ‘shill’ behaviour, but rather simply down to annoyance at what is perceived as constant self-promotion from folks who aren’t otherwise genuinely contributing or engaging with those communities in good faith. If we are being honest, the primary purpose of the vast majority of content creators posting to subreddits and other platforms like this are to drive traffic to their channels. Perhaps the question that folks should be reflecting on is how we can more effectively and authentically be part of the landscape, without solely being on broadcast the entire time (or at least, having the perception of such). Such malevolence is also definitely *not* something that is purely limited to /r/synthesizers - it is common across almost every topic-based forum out there, and basic Internet etiquette.
@@LiamKillen I did watch the video, and while you touched upon understanding people being fed up of what they perceive as 'shill' behaviour, you didn't really address the specific point I am making. People aren't interested in shallow contributions from people who they perceive as purely interested in self promotion - something that the entire thrust of your video calling the whole thing 'toxic' seems to miss. To be honest I had hoped for something of a more considered reply here, but I guess this interaction just goes to illustrate the point.
Well said. There are RUclipsrs that are good musicians, good sound designers, good teachers, good reviewers, share good tips and ideas, have mastered a given skill or piece of gear, put a ton on time and effort into a video or just have an entertaining personality. But then there are RUclipsrs that bring nothing much to the table, just click bait titles for videos with the most memorable part being the amount of self and sponsor promotion. Not surprising they get the hate, envy and all the negativity. Quite surprising that these channels are growing. I believe if RUclips didn't remove the dislike button, channels like this one would have a much harder time surviving.
Obviously there's going to be an element of self/channel promotion. That's kinda the point. People might just want to play music and have feedback while others are driven by a desire to educate and inspire and others still, just want to build a channel and make money. You've got to figure out the difference between those. My personal experience as a recent subscriber to this channel is that he's trying to show practical uses for pieces of gear used in different configurations. I have been trying to figure out a dawless setup for a while now and it's been very difficult when all the main 'reviewers' review every bit of new gear, make completely different music with it ever single time and pair it with different gear/ fx pedals EVERY SINGLE TIME. Like, 'here's the latest $$$ Moog synth, this is what it sounds like and here are all it's features and here's how it sounds with a Korg Volca beats and a Strymon night sky' What!? There never any consistency to those videos. So yeah, when I see a jam clip from this channel - it's similar gear, similar configuration and it promotes a similar theme. A theme that's discussed on this channel. That's the point (or at least some of it) of posting a clip. 'Come back to the channel where we discuss this kinda stuff.' What's wrong with that exactly?
@@LiamKillen The self-promotion is a bit triggering for sure. There are probably ways to be a bit more subtle about it, maybe *end* with promoting your Discord, as opposed to start *and* end with it, but that's just me. I haven't visited yours, but my experience with synth RUclipsrs' Discord is that it is the opposite of Reddit, but unfortunately not in the best of ways -- a lot of mob-mentality going on, people trashing anybody who disagrees with their favorite RUclipsr's take, etc. I stopped by Benn Jordan's discord for a bit, and it was as frustrating as some of Reddit's dark corners. My personal gold standard is Loopop, mostly because I get the feeling he cares about giving the gear a good shot without hiding the defects, and he is not on camera.
In the 90's I would look for techno. So much of it was bad, so much, I mean like 80% at least was just rubbish. Same nowadays with synthwave and trance.
In my experience, people talking shit on the internet are never actually doing anything productive, artistic or creative themselves. They NEVER have links to their music, their band or even posts of their playing, they hide behind anonymous usernames to make themselves feel better. Keep up the great work man, I've learned a ton and been inspired by your channel over the last few months!
I have experienced otherwise.. I have a very small following.. but have already encountered random people, on my FB or in music groups.. Not just that but people outright infringing rights in group settings.. One person doesn't like what I said, and then I got ganged up on.. trying to fix my snare.. and documenting/sharing my issues and experience. 😂. I tell people off alot, too.
100%. Can't tell you how many times I've run in to shit talkers and then I politely ask them if they could provide a link to their music, since they are definitely an expert. They NEVER have any actual music.
@@leftovernoise or a private profile which shows absolutely nothing. 😂😂. Clowns in the shadows, are still clowns. I noticed it on Instagram.. less so here on RUclips, because I have not put content up... Yet.
Standard cope. There are absolutely pros and famous musicians/producers who are being productive while also talking smack on Reddit anonymously, just like everyone else.
Mate, I think you're completely missing the forest for the trees. Reddit (as a whole) had a literal content rule that defined what accounts were to be categorized as spam - where for every one post about your own content, you should aim to make 10 or so comments or contributions that aren't self promotion (replies on your own stuff are still self promo). I think it was even part of the user onboarding back in the day - no idea if it's still a thing officially. You clearly know how to develop a recognizable brand identity - usernames, avatars, thumbnails, lighting, color grade, whatever. I bet many people can recognize your content as being yours at a glance and also realize that they've never seen your very recognizable branding comment or contribute to anything beyond your own posts. So, instead of meaningful feedback and discussion on content that should fit the bill, you get attention from only the crabbiest of folks and those who (kind of rightly) call out the misuse of the platform as advertising space. Whether promoting yourself as a "creator" people can monetarily support or a physical product people can buy doesn't really make a difference.
Ok I understand. I don’t think that’s still a thing anymore. So I’m assuming the crabby people you’re describing are the “old school redditors” ? I def don’t make 10 comments for every one of my posts but I’d also like to think that my content has brought value and educational discussion overall to the synth Reddit community- I can see it through comments on my videos. Lots of people do respond well which is why I keep posting. that’s come with an absolute crap load of very rude comments though.
@@LiamKillen all I’m saying is that if you want better responses to your content on a community-organized platform, then participate as a member of the community too. You have more knowledge and value to provide than just your videos. There are dozens of questions about gear, setups, advice, etc every day on there that I bet you could provide really useful answers to and help others without expecting a video view or patron-lead in return. There are plenty of recognizable names in the space that get positive feedback on their literal openly paid demo videos because they also show up in the comments of other people’s posts and help foster the space for the sake of it. You’re just admittedly cross posting polished assets and expecting it to always be seen as a meaningful contribution.
@@thismeanswarbasse Yeah for sure, but the responses that people give in that subreddit are so salty on the regular that it doesn't make me want to spend too much time / energy there. I think that the comments section of this video confirms that it's a toxic place in general, no matter who's posting there. On top of this, I think that continuously contributing directly related, informative videos aimed at inspring people is valuable enough in itself and I can see that in the response that I get to these videos - people do appreciate it. But again, this doesn't come without consistent rude comments from the "OG Redditors", I guess you'd call them - in that subreddit. I appreciate this exchange either way - thanks.
Ah Reddit. One of the only places where you can get praised and simultaneously pooped on for participating in a place made for it. Unfortunately there is a stigma in many of the hobby subreddits against RUclipsrs and influencers. I understand it to a degree, a lot of content out there is super shallow or just shilling products. There’s also a strong anti consumption/consumerism backlash following everything that happened since 2020 when there was a huge upsurge in hobbies and thus purchasing stuff. Obviously this clashes with influencers who rely on consumerism for material to a degree. It’s a whole mess of psychological factors.
There are many unfriendly subreddits, where they perceive you as breaking some (often unspoken/unwritten) etiquette rule and suddenly you're unwelcome and getting downvoted to heck. But always lovely when you find ones where they're friendly and helpful, and seem happy to engage with newcomers who maybe know less or have different opinions than themselves.
As an old man who's been on the internet since before it was the internet: People suck. They have always sucked. I would feel it safe to conjecture that they will continue to suck indefinitely. They just want attention. I don't give it to them.
why is toxicity such a problem in this community? I don’t understand why music nerds can’t just get along. Those subreddits are extremely mean to beginners too, and it really hurts people who are just starting out or are trying to just have fun
It’s because a lot of people attach a lot of there self worth to making music and they feel they can take out bad feelings on Luther’s unfortunately. Especially when people are buying expensive get and not making music it’s a bad cycle
Many times it's jealousy. Especially if a person can afford gear they can't. Even worse, if a person can afford gear and they're deemed "unworthy" because of lack of skill or experience. I fall victim to it myself sometimes thinking "must be nice being able to buy all that stuff, bet I could do more with it." But it never leaves my brain. Everyone has their own situations. Some people express their frustrations through toxic comments.
I left reddit altogether because it devolved from a great hobby community to a toxic soup of gatekeeping trolls, bots and TikTok reposts. But that's basically all social media in a nutshell.
Liam, I really appreciate you made this video. There are definitely a large handful of fools on that subreddit who who thrive by reinforcing their own negativity, bitterness and lack of intelligence. Not too long ago I posted a photo of my newly arranged studio setup on this subreddit and I was completely roasted to the point of abuse. Yes some people were very engaging and complimentary but many were just downright nasty to the point of being like spoiled childish bullies. The subreddit is by far the most toxic I’ve encountered on Reddit
@@LiamKillen I’m mature enough to know it’s not me and it’s just a small minority of people who get off on it ! Thanks and much respect for everything you do 😎🔥
This video came at just the right time. I've been feeling super-discouraged lately because of a couple "lovely" encounters with the type of folks described in your video and it's put me in a funk about even wanting to sit down in front of my gear and make music. I've been doing it more to spite myself lately than anything else, but hearing your thoughts about this subject gives me a sense of being reinvigorated a bit. Thank you for putting these thoughts out there for everyone who might need to hear them 🙂
I like the approach you took to raising this discussion. If someone doesn’t like what you’re posting, well it’s the internet. There’s lots of other options to take your attention to.
@@LiamKillenI also appreciate the sentiment of consolidating gear and really learning how to use it. Then actually making and detach a little from gear obsessions.
r/synthesizers doesn't know what it wants. Post gear pics, people complain, Post DAWless jams, people complain. Use the word "DAWless" people complain. Post music, people don't engage, like, or listen.... or complain. Post questions, people complain. Ask about hardware synth recommendations, people reprimand you for not saving money and buying plugins. All of these things are related to synthesizers, but everyone only wants it to be the specific thing that they're into, and everything else is trash/not worthy of the sub to them. So instead of just leaving it, they downvote it, or trash talk it. Add r/synthesizercirclejerk into the mix and now posts are targets for being mocked and made fun of (surprised you didn't mention those guys in your vid). In the end, r/synthesizers is not a very encouraging place to post. I used to share my music on there, but got discouraged when nobody seemed to care. I still try and answer some of the "newb" questions people post, no matter how dumb people think they are, because we've all been there at some point. That may include some "tough love" about buying too much gear to start out with, or purchasing redundant gear. But I'm not mean about it, like other people are. I'll take RUclips, Instagram, and even Facebook synth groups for posting and engagement over reddit any day.
Apologies...this comment ended up eing waaay too long. Few weeks ago, I asked on reddit what should I pick for my first hardware synth. I pointed out that I already have good midi keyboard from Arturia etc. First several comments were all about not buying hardware and investing in plugins. I was advised to buy Arturias synth pack (goes for about 500usd). I think some of the points were valid. Arturia delivers in its plugin package better value for money compared to any hardware synth at that price range and then some. But there was one guy who said: OP is not asking for plugin advice, he is asking for hardware. He recommended Behringer pro800. Which I bought. I am so hooked on this I have been twisting knobs every day whenever I have time😂. Already planning to buy Novation peak. If it wasn't for that one guy...I would have bought soft synth and give up after few days simply because interacting with it on the pc screen sucks ssoooooo hard for me. Negativity against youtubers...I think people are catching up with the fact that a lot of youtubers are just shills pushing product. They make themselves look like your next door dude who is trying to help. Hell, I learned it the hard way couple of times. Obviously honest youtubers will suffer in the process. It is up to them to show their worth and honesty to the communities they want to represent. Finally: In the video author says that in his discord people are niceer than on reddit. Sure they are. They are his subscribers...and if someone trolling or heavily criticizing...they will get booted from the channel.😅
I'm going to be a bit blunt, but my intention is not to be insulting, but at least give reason for at least some of the negativity. Outside toxic people you pointed out (criticising someone's musical ability and such is always dumb), there are a lot of people who are justifiably starting to get fatigued from synthfluencers and how they and the music gear industry work together to encourage the worst aspects of consumption communities, were you're encouraged or in some cases, borderline coerced to buy the Shiny New Thing™ to be part of said community. Eventually I pretty much zoned out of the entire community and watching said synthfluencers like yourself for this reason. "Tame" or no real reviews, lacking review guidelines to begin with, not mentioning major bugs (unless its convenient) and even in some cases, defending or just being generally shitty people. At the end of the day, its all about marketing the Shiny New Thing above all else, to the benefit of said companies. Just comes off as rather cynical as a whole. And lets be clear, it's not unique to this community, I see it too much in other hobbies to various degrees. Anything revolving photography/videography is particularly bad too with this. I say this despite having a decent amount of gear. Does it make me a hypocrite? Yes. Does it make what I say any less true? No.
Hey man I actually agree with you! I touch on this point in the video- thanks for reiterating here 😊 I mention that I’m also tired of that new gear cycle and that I’m steering my channel out of it. Mind you it’s pretty much impossible to be 100% “clean” as a creator in that respect
One unwritten rule on Reddit as a whole seems to be: don't direct traffic away from Reddit. Specifically, if I upload a video directly to Reddit, I tend to get some positive engagement from people, but if I link to a RUclips video, I get crickets - or best case a downvote and nothing more. So that's something to keep in mind too.
I know you said it’s not Reddit in general - however, as a synth-head, drum-head, painter, photographer, fashion-head… I have to disagree. I’d say around 75% of Reddit users are out to spout hate. “My opinion is the correct opinion and there is no other way of thinking that could possibly hold any weight” kind of attitudes. It’s really overwhelmingly the case on the platform from my experience
That clip did sound like beatboxing though ngl LOL. I've been thinking about a MultiFX pedal for a minute, hows that stack up to others you've used? Also reddit is at a default toxic, I typically only use it to gauge a products quality's over the course of multiple posts/comment strings worth of data, outside that it's rather useless.
I find that some subreddits are better than others. Yeah that's the thing, outside of the toxicity, it actually is a pretty great guage for tracking whether or not a product is worth it or not.
@@LiamKillen Hey man still curious about how you think the Chroma console compares to other multi fx pedals like the line6 stomp box, or eventide h90? Looking to get some hardware effects in my setup finally.
There's some snark in it for sure. I mostly go there to watch people's clips, see setups or answer questions. When I've asked gear questions I've gotten good answers. What probably annoys the regulars on it is something new coming out and then 10 people post links to their channels reviewing it. I don't want a synthfluencer's paid for opinion of it posted there I want to see some normal user playing with it and giving their opinion.
dude I'm happy to see you call stuff like this out and I imagine its a bit cathartic at the same time. Comments like the one at 2:36 are from folks who seem to be lost in various areas of life and unfortunately like to put others down as a way of feeling less bad. I really dislike how they wish you well after trashing you in the previous half of the comment, CRAZY TOXIC. I genuinely wish you a good day and glad you are offering a good vibe alternative for people who might want a different outlet 😊
I used to be a part of it, shit posting with my own created memes, nothing offensive, pretty funny. e.g, I think 1 meme was 1 was MIDI cents, Fiddy Cents with a MIDI cable around his neck. I did some fancy photo shopping and made what I though was good content, slowly I saw some of my stuff removed. Messages from the mod, "try to be funny", or things along this line. It wasn't a one off and frequently became more apparent a MOD had a bug up their butt about me, so I messaged them, what he did next was crossing the line. He abused the report system where he feared that I was going to do self harm, then blocked me from the ability to report him. He's found a loop hole which he abuses, I just decided, well enough was enough and delete my account along side all my content. Reddit is a breeding ground for some of the mot unsavory behavior I have witnessed in my life. I am glad that I was able to see and remedy the situation before I became a part of the subculture.
@@LiamKillen Oh I was meme king there, just wasn't worth my time in the end. I think I spent total of 4 months on Reddit b4 realizing it was a total waste and the sub culture was dire. It wasn't MIDI cents, it was Fiddy Cable lol. I probably done around 50 memes, getting upvotes, even went to the degree of getting the Vogon doing poetry from Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy holding the Vongon (all moving parts here and done well), yet the subreddit is only there to run down people, not encourage. :/
As others have said, I don’t think it’s a problem that unique to Reddit or synths. I have other hobbies besides music, and any forum or fb group can be toxic. I don’t get how people get off on being condescending or rude. It’s really baffling to me. I will say that the synth community in general is more helpful than other hobby communities I’m a part of. Really enjoy your channel btw!
For sure - it exists all over the internet, there's no denying that. It's the lvl of consistency + the amount of it that is def unique to Reddit. It attracts / cultivates that sort of behaviour for one reason or another.
Yeah people get really worked up in a very negative way on Reddit. Don’t get it. The problem is I can’t figure out how to use Discord for the life of me
Yeah it's quite a hectic platform for sure. I think the key is to manage notification so that you don't get overwhelmed with like 100 convos at once lol.
What I learned so far through my journey is that real musicians are always open minded, helpful and very happily vibing around with everyone who shares their passion about music. But today in 2024 a lot of people going through a lot of labeling, they need to categorize everything and let themselves categorize by others too on some point just to fit in a group of others, maybe to not be alone? I don't know. But what I know is with all these labeling it starts to get controversial and people gets rather divided instead of growing together. When I started to dive into the world of music somehow all my labels in my head disappeared over time and I just see Humans as they are no matter what genre or culture. I just have 2 labels in my head now - it's good and evil. And all the musicians out there I follow so far like Liam too are the pure good and that's what have kept me going over the last years when I started to create my music. Even when I felt overwhelmed by the possibility and almost gave up all the good vibes from you just kept me going and that is what it's all about !! Having a good time together and enjoy the sonic experience.
I stoped using most un-social pages, subreddit are one of them, as a waste of effort for me. I even stoped posting new albums on distro, spot, yt as numbers dont add up in the end, scam sevices, gov needs to audit them...
Sadly, your analysis here is spot for on. I've noticed how pretty much all channels I'm in are positive except for s/synthesizers. It's fascinating. Though let's look at it from the bright side: at least you get engagement there. Surprisingly often, I get crickets there (unlike in the other channels) for our productions, except for maybe the occasional hater who at least found the energy to downvote it. Sort of the laziest form of hate they could spare us. 😂
.I tried talk to famous YT reviewer in comment once... it was 20 seconds when my words was twisted and i was to blame for everything. It was the big one with good reputation. Now imagine the lower tiers.
My opinion is that every bigger internet group whether it’s on Facebook, reddit or whatever will have some level of toxicity. I always read „how toxic mortal Kombat community is” and coming from a general club music forum from Poland I can most definitely say „lol… no xD it’s definitely not toxic xD”
I just want to chime in that I appreciate the natural arc your channel has taken. Showing gear pairings and techniques from your own workflow? Hard to argue with, right? And if that is somehow offensive in any particular community, I'd encourage folks not to click and comment.
Its not just synth.. musicians in general, over various platforms, are getting inundated with various haters. Some people ask legit questions or are genuinely posting comments... But then theres the "others".. I shut them, directly on my pages.. (I play drums.. mostly) And i kinda wanna smack the shit out of people who accuse me of illicit drug use, or question my intellectual wellbeing. But i dont, and life goes on.
@@LiamKillen it's hard to tell.. I mean there's a clear difference when someone comments and has a profile or presence they've built or have.. but then there's the "seemingly bot-like" username.. or just random users that only view.. or perhaps hide for anonymity.. There are those cell data banks that do exist.. Basically a team of people manage hundreds or thousands of phones running fake accounts for social media boosting... Can I ask if you get solicitations from people along the lines of "pay x$ for # of subscribers? For at least 3 years +, on Instagram I randomly get harassed to buy followers or promote me... Sounds like a scam, to me.
No we don’t need to talk about it.. YOU do.. so you can promote your stuff. So now don’t ever criticize someone here in the comments like YOU do when anyone criticizes your videos.. ok sounds fair doesn’t it😊
I CHOSE to talk about it - big difference. Just like how people choose to make rude, uninformed comments, often without even watching or knowing what the video their commenting on is about. I'll respond accordingly 😉
@@LiamKillen Your the one craving attention but then get triggered when someone calls you out.. and snap back it’s fine I guess I just can’t stand your stuff or attitude I’ll switch off.. no worries.
@@LiamKillen I was trying to be funny and I do love you, bro. and don't concern yourself with the opinions of those gear hoarders. smaller, more focused setups is where it's at. and please don't stop covering smaller pieces gear, they all have their place, you know. like a cowbell.
I’ve played synths forever and have music released on underground labels, ive worked in a synth factory and diy my own stuff when I have the motivation, I only recently checked out the synth subreddit and it was an immediate wtf is this?! Reading people’s arguments over cable management preferences and new gear just made it seem really stupid. It’s dominated by low level bs by people who should get off the internet and explore their gear for themselves. I don’t think there was ever supposed to be a “synth community” it’s kinda counter productive, great for commerce tho
i totally stopped sharing or talking on any board. i used to spend a lot of my time in the guitar and boutique fx community ages ago and now i feel like i have seen everything :D Edit: synths aren't cheap and certain comments remind me a lot at people with very expensive guitars. to much competition and sort of a hurt customer mentality... kinda sad. i often used to ask for specific gear and specific spec sheets or experience. Best replys are the idiots who start like "oh You don't need this... a vst can do the same..." sure but that was simply not the question i had :D so it is what it is and i think a discord is a great idea!
Possibly Reddit is not RUclips. People might be going to Reddit to have a more symmetrical discussions. Rather than to "consume content" from a separate class of content creators. Particularly if you are sharing videos you put on other channels. Maybe people feel you aren't entering into the proper spirit of Reddit.
Honestly, I believe negative expression is valid expression. I don't like when people try to limit the range of how people are allowed to be, and try to insist that everyone must be super positive, supportive cheerleaders. Some people just have abrasive personalities, and it's not necessarily because they live in their mom's basement. I'm glad that these people also exist.
And the reason they are "faceless" is because the happy, positive, do-gooders will gladly try to get them fired from their jobs or blacklisted in other ways, just for being their own grumpy selves. Isn't that so nice of them?
of course, no one wants to have someone else's consistent rude / terrible behaviour reflect on them and potentially their business that they've been running for x amount of years.
Reading staccato written as "stocatto" hurt my eyes lol But yea man the issue is that the shilling's been taken a bit too far, if you're into synths anyone with more than 3k subs 90% of the time just tries to sell you shit. We all understand that people need to make money, and this is absolutely one of the ways to get there, but it seems like youtube has turned into the ad channel on TV back in the day but instead of selling knives, kitchen cloths or contraptions to workout, you try to sell synths. I don't blame anyone for making a video about gear, I usually like them if they're not just blatant ads and explain at least a little bit what the synth/pedal actually does, but there needs to also be something else, otherwise you just turn into the guy from '90s commercials.
@@LiamKillen that's true, I attribute it to the trash category based upon what it once was, which was overall a friendly place to productively engage with others. Posting a simple video in good faith and getting nit-picked by insufferable know-it-alls is peak reddit.
Reddit is good for when you google something and a person has the same specifically niche question as you, from like 9 years ago. You can get really great info sometimes. But yeah, just going onto Reddit itself and looking around is 😬
Remember, Ben Jordon stopped reviewing gear because of all the hate he got on his own YT channel, from people who could just choose not to watch. Its not just reddit. There will always be people on the good old internet whose only contribution is shitting on others. I said this in another reply thread and I'll say it again, your music clips showcase what can be done with gear configurations that you talk about in this channel. That is actually very educational and inspirational. And that focus contributes waaay less to the 'new gear hype.' People who cant/wont see what you are trying to do are usually upset with themsevles because they havent reached their own goals and are sharing their feedback out of spite.
For sure- I find that there’s certain places on the internet that attract that sort of behaviour. I like Ben Jordan and think he’s very talented- he’s got some very weird takes that rub people the wrong way in general. I think that he often leans into that sort of polarizing approach in his own content and through commenting on general things happening in pop culture. The one that really rubbed me the wrong way is when he defended Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, saying that he’d do the same in that situation- which is a take that lacks so much awareness. It’s the sort of take that might make you change your perspective entirely about someone- that’s def what happened in my case.
@LiamKillen yikes thats pretty bad. I followed him for a time while I was trying to figure out my gear purchases. Stopped recently when he started dropping bits of political commentary in his videos. I was referring to specific hate that he got for reviewing gear, though. A lot of it was tied to his heaping praise on the polyend play and their releasing the polyend play+ just about a year after the play. I was one of the people who bought the play because of his glowing reviews. I don't hate him for my decision though, just made me realise that just because an artist says something is good, doesn't mean it's good for what you need it to be.
I used to like that sub but there are too many fanboys on it. Especially the Elektron cult who believe you cant make music without an Elektron machine. The Moog fanboys are also insufferable.
Now that I know more about music gear, I understand how little you do. Sometimes, when you talk about gear its like you have only used it for a few hours or just read the website. I don't think reddit is toxic. You have shill tendencies and got called out for it.
You’re right- I actually know nothing about gear and music in general. You played the game of gotcha- and I got got SO hard. I’ll retreat from the internet for the rest of eternity out of sheer self hatred and embarrassment ☠️
reddit can be a great community but also tends to breed negativity a lot I've seen. there also tend to be a lot of people advertising for their channels and side hustles so that stuff tends to attract the trolls the most
Let the negative people be, ignore them and let them ruin their own day. Why care about what somebody else thinks or likes?...stay in the positive zone....and do what YOU like. Music should allways be made for yourselve......then other opinions don't matter anymore. If you are yourselve happy with it....its allways a job well done. 😊
I agree with you mostly. At the same time, when there’s a constant flow of these sorts of comments it’s inevitable that it’s gonna get annoying over time.
It’s amazing how we spend our whole IRL lives around people who don’t give a sh- about this passion we have, then we get into this niche group of people from around the world who aCTUALLY GET IT… and just treat each other like absolute garbage. Unreal. Human beings man.
yeah i think any sort of hobby or interest that has a really expensive entry point just breeds these kinds of people. god don't even get me started on music engineer forums
r/synthesizers is a weird place, everyone's there ostensibly for the common love of synthesizers but people there are so negative, and laser focus in on all the 'negatives' of every piece of gear, and if you don't have the 'right gear' you can't hang. But if you'd just posted a still image of a vintage synth you'd have gotten heaps of upvotes and rounds of applause.... This dude has a good video on so called "Consumption communities" definitely applies to a lot of music subreddits - r/synthesizers, r/guitar, r/guitarpedals etc. - ruclips.net/video/44lw5lQHVy0/видео.htmlsi=B6UqHiTiiB4llI3q
Reckon you’re overthinking their motivations! They aren’t very talented and threatened by others who ACTUALLY do something. You don’t owe them anything.
Well, I like your videos, but I think there is a growing fatigue to consumption dynamic that dominates electronic music. I’m old enough to remember when this was all a mystery - the gears the techniques, etc. A lot of these videos create GAS because the techniques that lead to the great music you make *seem* to be linked to the gear you use. And sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. But that doesn’t justify the hate. It’s just too easy for bad actors hiding behind handles to discharge their negative energy, generate drama and attention. Nevertheless, it’s sign of or times, the consequence of instant communicative discharge and anonymity in the ultra materialistic neoliberal age.
I can't stand Reddit anymore haha. There are certain subreddits that are worse than others and some that aren't as bad, but I do think it's more common on Reddit than most other internet "places." It seems to invite the worst characteristics of the human psyche and then people jump into mob mentality when they see downvotes piling up. Your discord is definitely more fun and lighthearted. Haha. Keep at it man you make good music, not just content.
The reason is that reddit is meant for discussion, not content creation for the sake of earning moneys. Most engagement on YT is fake attention-seeking stuff.
Content kind of rules, or is at least very common, on all platforms now, including Reddit. If you don’t like that medium then maybe find another platform where it’s excluded? Good luck with that - or just start up an audible subscription lol
Its the broad scope of “synthesizers”. As a youtuber you get the whole spectrum of people who have some interest in synths. But, as Ive come to find myself, its too broad to be helpful. I still go and look and chat out of boredom but I expect very little from such a broad group of people. Yes, we all like synths but its like “electronic music”. I love electronic music but I also really hate electronic music. Some genres are total vibe kill… for me. “Synthesizers” is just like that, you have the people who think a synth is all about keys and chords and polyphony, electronic pianos… Then you have the hip hop types who mainly just like samplers and drum machines. You have the generative ambient folks in eurorack. Hell, eurorack, it can do all the things and also can do a lot of nothing. Some people just like the concept more than the music. None of this is wrong but these people in the same room doesnt equal a party everyone is going to enjoy. What do you play? Is it a band? Church organ music? Detroit Techno? Drum and Bass? Hip-hop? Will there be vocals? Happy fuckin hardcore!? Drone music…. Almost no one actually likes all of it. Yet under the same roof you have them all joined under the related point of equipment. Its actually a pretty generic relationship point, with some conflicting mindsets on what is the best outcome of using said gear.
🤣You're mad and calling an entire subreddit toxic because people didn't like your content..? You're calling the comments "hateful" and that they must be bots? Come on bro. It's because you're trying to use it as a marketing platform for yourself. Of course people who follow you.. or the Discord you own you're going to only get positive comments... you seem like the type of person who will ban or remove ANYONE with a dissenting opinion. Glad I found this video, now I look forward to your subreddit posts.
Calling 370k + people flat out toxic? Interesting- doesn’t sound like me - sounds like maybe you’re painting broad strokes having just read the title of the video? I knew going into this that it would rile up the hardcore redditors. Ps: bro…you’re jacked
@@LiamKillen I watched the video you paint an entire community in a poor light. I really think it's due to using it as a platform for marketing looking for attention vs as a discussion board. I don't have anything negative to say about your talent personally, you're better then I could ever hope to be but I do feel like you're taking comments on a subreddit pretty hard, to call them hateful is a stretch.
@@loktar00 The continued response you're giving confirms that you either haven't actually watched the video past maybe the first 30-40 seconds maybe, or you're selectively choosing which things to respond to or hear in the video. That's ok, you don't owe me anything, but i'm saying now that my take in this video is much more nuanced than what you're making it out to be here with this comment - and also there's nothing wrong with me calling out years of continuous and consistent rude comments stemming overwhelmingly from one specific place - the synthesizers subreddit.
Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts on the matter .. as you spoke in a level headed .. concise .. diplomatic .. gentle manner .. the truth .. there will surely be those doom and gloomers hiding in the shadows .. yet you took nothing personally .. kudos to you as you chose to shrug off the negativity .. you know what it has taken to get to where you are at .. the path you forged for yourself .. the success you have found .. keep on doing what you are doing .. you owe no explanations to anyone ... cheers to you !
Attack is a bit dramatic lol The only people deleting in this case are the r/synthesizers moderators removing my directly related post from their subreddit, as mentioned in this video 🫡 There was also an FB group that had Reddit mods in it who decided to delete the sharing of THIS video as well. Man…they can really dish it out over on r/synthesizers but clearly they have a hard time taking criticism!
@@LiamKillenI can still access the post on Reddit , I read it and that’s why I said it wasn’t that bad overall minus a couple trolls. Certainly not worth making a video over. You got 106 upvotes, 53 comments which is more than most people, and you got replies. I counted like 3 stupid comments saying it was garbage or why are you moving your hands so much, and one accusing you of getting paid or something dumb. Most comments were people engaging with their opinions of the product itself. This is standard r/synthesizers except you got a bunch of comments and tons of up votes compared to us plebs.
I have learnt more about synths/daws etc from Liam's Discord channel than I ever did on reddit. So many mature and nice people on his Discord. Highly recommend!
Because I’m not a content creator anymore, I rarely post comments on the internet unless I know there gonna go under the radar. I find it all kinda pointless to me, but once in a while I have something to say when it comes to creative endeavors. So when that happens, the last thing I wanna see is buster a%* wanksters drinking that Hater-Aid lol Such pathetic behavior is a waste of carbon. With that said, Im glad I don't like Reddit. it's not because of the haters, I just don't like how the app/website works. Unlike the simpler format of Gear Sluts…. which seemed to be more about gear snobbery then hating. It was comical to read what people used to say about Behringer before they started making synths. I used to and still use there mixers. Idk, seems like toxic discussions are worse on places like Reddit. All I know is I respect other people opinions regardless if they don’t run parallel with my own. Like selling a Digitone 😉
@@LiamKillen lol that’s funny. Maybe there will be a Digitone 2 in the pipeline. One could wish. I wonder what enhancements they could make to it to garner a mk2 version 🤔
You’ve always been great, and your videos are unique since you are not reviewing a piece of gear like other channels. The world is full of complainers, it’s like they will hate everything they don’t have or aren’t doing, bc there are people enjoying the fun of making music and not getting caught up in useless hate. Keep it up man! Cheers
Thanks for sharing. You're very talented and articulate. I would focus more on music making and not the haters. They hate, they don't make music, nor do they create--well, nought but hate LOL.
I’ve posted multiple times to Reddit. Sometimes it was me playing my gear, sometimes just a video of my gear. 90% of comments has been negative with suggestions that for example I got paid by somebody to post it and endorse new Digitakt. I’d love to get paid for it 😂
The problem is really quite easy to understand. Every person has an opinion. Every person has a bottom. Sometimes the opinion has similar content to the bottom. 🤣
It’s hard to feed pearls to swine .. the toxic will be toxic you are so far from a shill.. to anyone with a clue you support and talk about things you are excited about… I can’t stand influencer culture cause their lack of authenticity upon selling any crap they get paid to sell is impossible for me to ignore but you sir have never came off that way one bit. Your channel is excellent and i can always count on enjoyable experience watching it. The toxic stuff is sadly so often gonna be there like weeds.
My Discord ? Hell no it's not - there's been one rude member thus far who left - and all other future rude members will be dealt with accordingly. Can't say as much over on the synthesizers Reddit - certain posts trigger very unproductive / unencouraging behaviour.
Reddit is swamp... but too often, people assume trolling, when it could be honest criticism, or even just someone drinking at a bar, with nothing other to do, then spill the inebriated truth. Then the easily offended, complains to a mod, and that gets elevated to censorship. Censorship is fascism.
Honest, nuanced criticism is necessary and appreciated on this channel ! It's pretty obvious when something steps into attempted hurtful or rude commentary though and that's when i'll respond accordingly.
I stopped posting on Reddit many years ago. I know it probably drives some traffic to your video, but I'd just advise taking the hit on traffic so you don't have to deal with that toxic website. For what its worth, I appreciate what you do here on RUclips even if our musical tastes aren't completely aligned. Keep up the good work.
Appreciate you watching. It's weird though because the haters come out for specific posts. Still haven't fully figured it out yet. Don't think I ever will. I just posted a thing about the SSL Big Six and it's all positive comments to the actual clip. Lots of arguing in the comments though lol.

This is apples and oranges. Your own personal discord is a collective of people who already like you
It’s like complaining that your singing didn’t go down as well when you did it in the town square vs at home with your family and friends
This is something that I point out / discuss in the video- I understand and agree that people are getting tired of this.
Like, 'here's the latest $$$ Moog synth, this is what it sounds like and here are all it's features and here's how it sounds with a Korg Volca beats and a Strymon night sky'
What!? There never any consistency to those videos. So yeah, when I see a jam clip from this channel - it's similar gear, similar configuration and it promotes a similar theme. A theme that's discussed on this channel. That's the point (or at least some of it) of posting a clip. 'Come back to the channel where we discuss this kinda stuff.'
What's wrong with that exactly?

Same nowadays with synthwave and trance.
it’s endemic to Reddit my man. Every single subreddit is like this.
Some of them are much better than others. Synthesizers in particular is consistently discouraging
Yeah they’re usually just critics
I have experienced otherwise.. I have a very small following.. but have already encountered random people, on my FB or in music groups..
Not just that but people outright infringing rights in group settings..
One person doesn't like what I said, and then I got ganged up on.. trying to fix my snare.. and documenting/sharing my issues and experience.
😂. I tell people off alot, too.
100%. Can't tell you how many times I've run in to shit talkers and then I politely ask them if they could provide a link to their music, since they are definitely an expert. They NEVER have any actual music.

Yo make some good points here.
Absolutely - the unwritten code thing is so true !
They generally project their insecurity or unhappiness onto others to feel that they're not alone being miserable.
Yup - projection is a big part of it for sure.
As an old man who's been on the internet since before it was the internet: People suck. They have always sucked. I would feel it safe to conjecture that they will continue to suck indefinitely. They just want attention. I don't give it to them.
It’s just amplified the behaviour you’re right
1:09 that’s one of the tightest kicks I’ve ever heard! How could supposed music tech nerds not be impressed by the tightness of that kick?!
😅
why is toxicity such a problem in this community? I don’t understand why music nerds can’t just get along. Those subreddits are extremely mean to beginners too, and it really hurts people who are just starting out or are trying to just have fun
It's true - but it's also good to know that there are more encouraging communities out there !
It’s not just that sub many hobby subs are like that. And not just Reddit either
I know there's been discourse about this for years now, but I'm starting to feel really bad for the kids growing up on the internet.
MYeah i'm sure that's really hard to monitor.
Yes some people were very engaging and complimentary but many were just downright nasty to the point of being like spoiled childish bullies. r/synthesizers doesn't know what it wants.
It’s true it’s a really conflicted sub Reddit!
Finally:
In the video author says that in his discord people are niceer than on reddit.
I touch on this point in the video- thanks for reiterating here 😊
I mention that I’m also tired of that new gear cycle and that I’m steering my channel out of it.

It’s really overwhelmingly the case on the platform from my experience

Reddit is a breeding ground for some of the mot unsavory behavior I have witnessed in my life.
I am glad that I was able to see and remedy the situation before I became a part of the subculture.
I considered doing some memes but I haven't thought of anything that would hit like it sounds yours did lol
Idk, my experience is totally different. A lot of kind people on this subreddit.
People can be kind for sure! It’s the consistency of rude comments that I find to just be a general burden
@@LiamKillen its probably because you are recognizable. People tend to be mean sometimes. Don’t take it personally and do what you are doing.
That’s a nice msg- thanks for adding it here 😊
Reddit and Discord are just about my least favourite places for forums etc on the internet
The toxicity is high lol

Yeah it’s a problem! Sorry you’re dealing with it too!
.I tried talk to famous YT reviewer in comment once... it was 20 seconds when my words was twisted and i was to blame for everything. It was the big one with good reputation. Now imagine the lower tiers.
It's true - we are responsible for all of your synth / gear problems AND for your skill or lack there of as a producer / artist.
@@LiamKillen absolutely
My opinion is that every bigger internet group whether it’s on Facebook, reddit or whatever will have some level of toxicity. I always read „how toxic mortal Kombat community is” and coming from a general club music forum from Poland I can most definitely say „lol… no xD it’s definitely not toxic xD”
It’s true how do you moderate 350k + people. The cool thing about smaller communities is that it’s totally manageable to just kick out the toxic folk
I just want to chime in that I appreciate the natural arc your channel has taken. Showing gear pairings and techniques from your own workflow? Hard to argue with, right? And if that is somehow offensive in any particular community, I'd encourage folks not to click and comment.
I totally agree- thus is not the mantra of the Reddit community though lol
Its not just synth.. musicians in general, over various platforms, are getting inundated with various haters.
Some people ask legit questions or are genuinely posting comments...
But then theres the "others"..
I shut them, directly on my pages..
(I play drums.. mostly)
And i kinda wanna smack the shit out of people who accuse me of illicit drug use, or question my intellectual wellbeing.
But i dont, and life goes on.
Part of me wonders if some of these are legit bot accounts.

Yyyyyyup lol
i totally stopped sharing or talking on any board. i used to spend a lot of my time in the guitar and boutique fx community ages ago and now i feel like i have seen everything :D
Edit: synths aren't cheap and certain comments remind me a lot at people with very expensive guitars. to much competition and sort of a hurt customer mentality... kinda sad.
i often used to ask for specific gear and specific spec sheets or experience. Best replys are the idiots who start like "oh You don't need this... a vst can do the same..." sure but that was simply not the question i had :D
so it is what it is and i think a discord is a great idea!
You just need to find the right spaces to share in!
Welcome to the internet.
As mentioned in the video - specifically the synthesizers subreddit ***
Possibly Reddit is not RUclips.
People might be going to Reddit to have a more symmetrical discussions. Rather than to "consume content" from a separate class of content creators.
Particularly if you are sharing videos you put on other channels. Maybe people feel you aren't entering into the proper spirit of Reddit.
If you read the comments section of this video you’ll realize that symmetrical conversation is often not what happens lol
Up/down vote/like systems like Reddit are fragile. At best they discourage bad behavior. At worst it becomes a toxic echo chamber
Echo chamber is a key word I should have used in my video haha - thanks for adding it here.
But does your discord have a circlejerk?
😂
Honestly, I believe negative expression is valid expression. I don't like when people try to limit the range of how people are allowed to be, and try to insist that everyone must be super positive, supportive cheerleaders. Some people just have abrasive personalities, and it's not necessarily because they live in their mom's basement. I'm glad that these people also exist.
And the reason they are "faceless" is because the happy, positive, do-gooders will gladly try to get them fired from their jobs or blacklisted in other ways, just for being their own grumpy selves. Isn't that so nice of them?
Don't believe in that negative expression TOO much - it's really easy to turn into an angry person - and even worse ...an old angry person.
of course, no one wants to have someone else's consistent rude / terrible behaviour reflect on them and potentially their business that they've been running for x amount of years.
@@LiamKillen Angry old people are great. My grandparents were angry old people and I loved them.
Yeah I understand that people are tired of this for sure
Reddit is total trash at this point
It's trash sometimes but it's also still relevant, it's a very weird and conflicted place lol
But yeah, just going onto Reddit itself and looking around is 😬
@@ambrosiajam8008 you're right, it is great for that
I find other subs are worthwhile in most cases, but the ones that lean towards spoiled white men tend to be trash.
It's true though - it's utterly impossible to make music with anything other than Elektron gear ☠️ 🤯 😅
As you all might know this but Hainbach dis a very good video about this same topic called Hate loops
I saw that video!
There's a sampler one that is like that too.
It seems that the more general ones are a big rougher - I know that the DJ one is bonkers mean.
Don't let em get you down. Just keep having fun
My thoughts exactly.
@liam keep enjoy music and give fun. Continue to help us discover new things. Peace. Asterisium.
reddit can be a great community but also tends to breed negativity a lot I've seen. there also tend to be a lot of people advertising for their channels and side hustles so that stuff tends to attract the trolls the most
Yeah looks like it
Let the negative people be, ignore them and let them ruin their own day.
I love your posts here and on Reddit. I do think your responses have appeared sensitive historically on Reddit. Reddit hates that.
Haters gonna hate what they wanna hate !
It’s amazing how we spend our whole IRL lives around people who don’t give a sh- about this passion we have, then we get into this niche group of people from around the world who aCTUALLY GET IT… and just treat each other like absolute garbage. Unreal. Human beings man.
Yeah it’s an unfortunate situation for sure
Being the owner of a Vongon Replay, I feel you!

Synthesizer forums are about gear not about music
Or maybe both?
@@LiamKillen that would be nice
yeah i think any sort of hobby or interest that has a really expensive entry point just breeds these kinds of people.
god don't even get me started on music engineer forums

r/synthesizers is a weird place, everyone's there ostensibly for the common love of synthesizers but people there are so negative, and laser focus in on all the 'negatives' of every piece of gear, and if you don't have the 'right gear' you can't hang.
Some content still does well there - as long as you don't show your face / have an opinion about anything lol.
These people want to feel better about the 3k they didnt have they used to buy their gear
😅
Reckon you’re overthinking their motivations! They aren’t very talented and threatened by others who ACTUALLY do something. You don’t owe them anything.
truth
I have been called the worst name there…
me too lol. It's the consistency !
@@embersandash I agree with you and it's something that I mention in the video !
I can't stand Reddit anymore haha. There are certain subreddits that are worse than others and some that aren't as bad, but I do think it's more common on Reddit than most other internet "places."
It seems to invite the worst characteristics of the human psyche and then people jump into mob mentality when they see downvotes piling up.
Your discord is definitely more fun and lighthearted. Haha. Keep at it man you make good music, not just content.
Thanks for being there and for your compliments 😊
We only troll because we care and hate.
🤔
Appreciate your take on this! Thank you for watching 😊
Why even be on Subreddit and not look for some established forums or cosy Discords?
Riiiight ? 😉
🤣You're mad and calling an entire subreddit toxic because people didn't like your content..? You're calling the comments "hateful" and that they must be bots? Come on bro.
