For anyone who is going to rent one..the ramp is made to be pulled out all the way. Then lift it up and there will be hooks to attach, so that it's flush with the floor. There should be no bump that you have to go over with a dolly or anything. It's something I hadn't figured out right away lol.
U haul won't rent out diesels because customers will inevitably put gas in the diesel tank, gas nozzle fits in a diesel tank but not the opposite. Diesel would be so much more fuel efficient but accidents will happen.
Do not believe the lie-o-meter on the dash! My previous truck (2007, 7.2 Cat) got 9MPG, my current truck (2014, 6.7 Cummins) has never topped 7.5MPG and usually hovers around 7. I would love a V10 F650.
John Ferguson Mine was a 2014 Freightliner M2 with a 240hp Cummins 6.7. with 5.11 gears and an Allison Auto. I actually have a video of it on my channel. It doesn't have a dash mpg gauge. I filled the tank to the brim, to the point of overflow. And divide it out with the total mileage.
This video is super fun too. I love quirky vehicles getting tested. 10 mpg is not bad. My dad had that engine in an 1999 F250-SD and it only got 12 mpg - 13 mpg on the highway.
Love it! Definitely a different review but why not? I am surprised at the lack of interior refinement in pretty much all rental type vehicles. Guess they figure you won't be in it long enough for it to bother you? When I saw your bike I totally thought you were gonna talk about how you could fit it in "with the tire on!" 😀 Keep me comin!
All rental trucks are usually gas instead of diesel. Reason being people renting these trucks are usually not truck drivers, they are used to driving cars and SUV's with gas engines and they don't want them accidentally putting gas in the diesel engine.
The noise with the brakes is because it has hydraulic brakes. And without the engine running supplying power brakes there is an electric motor to supply the power brakes as a backup. So if the engine died, you still have full power brakes to stop that massive truck. Also the 6.7L diesel likely won't do better on MPG than the 6.8L gas engine.
U-Haul ramps have always had better ramps, if I remember right the ramps were the same in the 70's & 80's and on. My dad rented U-Haul in the 70's & 80's when we moved which was a 24 ft truck. I've rented 14 ft U-Haul in 1994 & 2001 for One-Way moves which the ramps were the same, grip on ramp which is nice for not slipping.
The noise of the brake without the engine running, is an electronic assist on the brakes; it's there in case the engine dies while on a hill. so you can stop it.
Everyone else seems to get a decent Uhaul truck. I always get the ones that have been trashed out or a trailer that pulls funny. I gave up and bought my own trailer since. $500 and i cant even feel my trailer behind me. Pulls like a dream.
I've driven several of the new JH's in the past few months. Most have had an usb port. Your particular truck had a Line-in, that little silver hole in the lower right part of the dash. I went out and got a little Mp3 player just for when we're moving U-hauls. There ain't no heavy metal radio stations in my neck of the woods.
The buzzing noise, brake booster.the cab is the same as the outgoing f250 superduty, the V10 is so antiquated.u haul should've spec the trucks with diesel engines.the difference between 650,750.the 750 is a CDL truck, air brakes over 26,000 gvw ,gas or diesel.cruise control is a nice feature.
You can't get the V10 with air brakes. Oddly, you can get a CDL F650 (up to 29K), and a non-CDL (25,999lb) F750. I would much prefer gas power to any current diesel in that size truck.

The noise you hear when you press the brake is the electric vacuum pump for the brake booster being air is required at this level. Diesels don't make vacuum so they kept the same on the gas as well. Diesel doesn't have anyway to create vacuum because their isn't anything on the intake. This is the reason old diesels would run away until they blew or could shut the air off or shut fuel off. New vehicles kill the fuel.
U-Haul used to Supply locks for the back door they quit doing that when the customers kept the keys then we'd have to cut the locks off the truck and replace them that's why customers use their own locks
They are lying folks. The damn truck will haul any and everything that will fit in it. I just moved an entire steel building in this truck. It was filled to the top with steel. It cruised 8 hours like nothing was in it. Thanks ford.
The reason they use gas engines is because the people who rent these are accustomed to driving gasoline-powered vehicles. Diesels will get better MPG but the last thing they want is for someone to put 57 gallons of regular unleaded in a diesel truck.
very stupid to sleep in the back of a uhaul truck, if somebody slams the door or it accidentally gets shut otherwise, it's likely to lock and there is no way to open the door from the inside.
U-Haul claims all their rental trucks get 10 mpg. They don't. You are lucky to get 5 or 6 mpg. With 7000 lbs payload and 7500 lbs trailer count on 3 or 4.
It's a shame because I like them a lot. They're flat as a pancake until the turbo kicks in though but when they do they can go like a stabbed rat. They also make some cool chugging and whistling sounds.
Why would it be gas. That is just stupid. They dont make these trucks like they use to. You cant get any bigger than a 26ft and they also no longer offer a 4 door.
I've never understood why trucks in the US are so far behind the rest of the world in terms of quality and design. That thing is possibly primitive. Even the Great Leap Forward when Ford finally brought the Transit to the US, they deliberately chose to use an older model for the US market.
Still not giving me enough to be useful. What TYPE of trucks? (Pickups, cargo vans, Class 8 semis?) What design characteristics? (This isn't a "cabover fanboy" post, is it?) What build quality? (Defect rate, mean time before overhaul...what?) I'm taking it, you saw something *in this particular video* that EU does better in it's RENTAL truck fleet. What, exactly?

That is why you get a truck through Penske!
Not really...modern diesel mileage has tanked. I drive a 26' diesel truck, and have never topped 7.5MPG with it.
John Ferguson I had a 26ft Freightliner the other day that got 11 mpg.
Do not believe the lie-o-meter on the dash! My previous truck (2007, 7.2 Cat) got 9MPG, my current truck (2014, 6.7 Cummins) has never topped 7.5MPG and usually hovers around 7. I would love a V10 F650.

Great video. Cool idea of reviewing a U-Haul.
Never see these kind of review.
This video is super fun too. I love quirky vehicles getting tested. 10 mpg is not bad. My dad had that engine in an 1999 F250-SD and it only got 12 mpg - 13 mpg on the highway.
Gotta give you thumbs up for a U-Haul review
Love it! Definitely a different review but why not? I am surprised at the lack of interior refinement in pretty much all rental type vehicles. It's a Ford pickup cab...though I'm surprised to see crank windows.
All rental trucks are usually gas instead of diesel. Reason being people renting these trucks are usually not truck drivers, they are used to driving cars and SUV's with gas engines and they don't want them accidentally putting gas in the diesel engine.
I like how it says "saving you money on gas" on the side
The noise with the brakes is because it has hydraulic brakes. And without the engine running supplying power brakes there is an electric motor to supply the power brakes as a backup. "Secure you load" Good birth control advise.

10 mpg is pretty good for a class 6 truck..the older diesels get 6-8...
Cesar Palmos Thats newer diesels. The non emissons ones were better. Boost close to 27 mpg..
Brandon Caldwell not on a class 6 truck.
Everyone else seems to get a decent Uhaul truck. I always get the ones that have been trashed out or a trailer that pulls funny. I gave up and bought my own trailer since. $500 and i cant even feel my trailer behind me. Pulls like a dream.

Hey I work for uhaul and that's pretty cool that you got the new model 😎 it fairly easy to drive if you asked me 😂
Is it easy to drive
The buzzing noise, brake booster.the cab is the same as the outgoing f250 superduty, the V10 is so antiquated.u haul should've spec the trucks with diesel engines.the difference between 650,750.the 750 is a CDL truck, air brakes over 26,000 gvw ,gas or diesel.cruise control is a nice feature.

Dave can you do more reviews on more moving trucks if you get them? I know it sounds crazy but I enjoyed this review

thanks! renting one soon, nice demo.
Hope you do more Rental reviews :)

No vacuum...the brakes are hydroboost, off the PS pump. The noise is the auxiliary booster.
U-Haul used to Supply locks for the back door they quit doing that when the customers kept the keys then we'd have to cut the locks off the truck and replace them that's why customers use their own locks
10 MPG. Same as a 2016 Chevrolet K2500 pickup with a 6.5 foot bed.
Ford F650 26' Box = Chevrolet K2500 6.5' box.
They are lying folks. The damn truck will haul any and everything that will fit in it. I just moved an entire steel building in this truck. It was filled to the top with steel. It cruised 8 hours like nothing was in it. Thanks ford.
hey Dave when are you getting your hands on Chrysler Pacifica van 2017 limited
Hydra boost brake system. It is the electric motor providing power to the brakes.
the noises you hear when you put the brake is the brake booster it's in case the engine dies you can still stop
The ramp can be flush with the floor
Haha that's the same thing I do when I rent cars I take my bike to return home
I either walk or take a Uber. I only use Uber if I have a coupon for something for them.
The reason they use gas engines is because the people who rent these are accustomed to driving gasoline-powered vehicles. Diesels will get better MPG but the last thing they want is for someone to put 57 gallons of regular unleaded in a diesel truck.
Cool I think I was in a chevy or GMC 6/7500 Uhaul truck when we helped my dads cousin move
The big ones were C5500 GMC's until last year...older ones with 454s, or new ones with the big 8100 gas engine.
that would be correct paired with Alison transmissions
That's one way to change things up
very stupid to sleep in the back of a uhaul truck, if somebody slams the door or it accidentally gets shut otherwise, it's likely to lock and there is no way to open the door from the inside.
10 miles to the gallons are how much litre to 100 km ? 😅
The noise is an air pump.
It's hydraulic brakes.
the noise when you press the brake is the motor assist
It's not getting 10 mpg. The Excursion barely got 10 mpg.
blackericdenice things have changed since the mid 2000s dude
U-Haul claims all their rental trucks get 10 mpg. They don't. You are lucky to get 5 or 6 mpg. With 7000 lbs payload and 7500 lbs trailer count on 3 or 4.
The sprinter with the 4 cylinder is very economical. I Wish someone rented them here in the US,but I don't think they do.
It's a shame because I like them a lot. They're flat as a pancake until the turbo kicks in though but when they do they can go like a stabbed rat. They also make some cool chugging and whistling sounds.
Not hardly, lol. Those trucks get about 8-9 on the flat and cruising at 62mph, even when towing.
5-6 driving it like you stole it up the mountains fully loaded and towing. I’d say about 8 if you’re taking it easy, cruise control keeping it at 60.
10mpg is pretty good
Whoa! so big!!
I've ended up on the weird side of youtube again
Welcome to the weird side.
Nice shirt, Eric! :)
Why would it be gas. That is just stupid. They dont make these trucks like they use to. You cant get any bigger than a 26ft and they also no longer offer a 4 door.
is it a 4WD or RWD
rwd
pretty cool
I wouldn't rent a furniture pad from U-haul.
UHaul: pronounce as for "UTube": You Haul.
These 26’ have to be Diesels so they can carry heavy stuff

i have a suspicion it's to preserve the demand for their light duty f150s , etc
its a rental truck very basic cab to cut cost down
Behind in what way?
As I said, in design and build quality.
Still not giving me enough to be useful. What TYPE of trucks? (Pickups, cargo vans, Class 8 semis?) What design characteristics? (This isn't a "cabover fanboy" post, is it?) What build quality? (Defect rate, mean time before overhaul...what?)
